Welcome to Oregon ! You were seeing smoke from the "Flat Fire" it is about is about 60 miles E/NE as the crow flies from where you camped. It started 7/15. Enjoy your hike and don't skimp on the bug spray 😊
Fires of interest to you at this point are #FlatFire (Curry County) over 20,000 acres and #BedrockFire (Lane County) over 7000 acres. They are smoking in your general direction. Bedrock Fire is near me, a bit south of the footprint of 2020's #HolidayFarmFire from which I had to evacuate. You can see these on the PCTA interactive map; toggle the fire layer and choose MODIS and VIIRS. There is a hot spot near Medford to keep an eye on. Good luck and good shoes go with you!
Last year I camped at the little spot you pointed out on top of the ridge. It was a delightful night there. Saw a rattlesnake just before I got there. Once you got up above the valley aways there was no more poison oak. Lots of manzanita. There is a relative of poison oak (Rhus trilobata- skunk sumac) in spots but it doesn't cause rashes. My wife, Wonder, and I will be starting north from Cascade Locks on Sunday evening, July 30th. We expect to see you at some point before we reach Canada. Happy trails
Here is a simple phrase I use to help people learn to differentiate P.O. from other plants. Leaves of three, let it be. If they’re hairy, it’s a berry. No poison ivy on the west coast. Try to stay away from that stuff, it can make a person cranky.
You guys and gal are troopers! You all seemed to handle that climb out of Seiad very well and you put in big miles on top of that! And your attitudes are still upbeat and humorous. Thank you for always telling your mile markers and showing us your campsites, I really enjoy that. Happy trails!🏕️👣🌲 Update: There appears to be two fires that might be the cause of the haze you've been seeing. One is the Flat fire, approximately midway between the coast and Medford, OR and could easily blow towards those mountains you were pointing the camera to, and the other one is the Haight Creek fire, midway between the coast and Eugene which could also blow southeast towards your route.
Great mileage - 23 miles! Nice mountain views and a steep climb at the beginning. Joe, you probably know this, but regarding the poison ivy/oak, if you wash your legs within 24 hrs, you wont get the rash. Even just pour water over them. Thanks to Kristy for getting the edited videos out to us! Really enjoying them!
I am going to suggest the haze is from silver iodide which is used in cloud seeding. There are many articles about it on webmd, cnn, etc that you can look up. I've noticed it here too in Wisconsin, it has been very prevalent this year.
Watch Duty shows Flat Fire, Bedrock Fire, and Golden Fire closest around Ashland. Lots of fires dotting the northwest states right now. I didn't think we had Poison Ivy those far west, but I'm not as familiar about the northern direction. Hike on!
You are crushing the miles. You should be in Oregon in the next video so hope you enjoyed Ashland. The haze you are seeing unless I’m mistaken is just the moisture and oils evaporating from the ground snd foliage of the siskiyou mountains.
poison oak: three leafs branching out from branch stem. that is common for three of the most well known poison plants like Ivy, and another one in Washington I cant think of the name. no jagged edges on oak, rounded subtle circular edges like multiple semi circles . young new leaves may have some brownish tinge coloring near the edges of the leaves. new leaves often shinny like they might have a thin layer of oil coating on them. Salt water bath in the ocean can help, but not for you. soapy water may help some if removed soon after contact. One thing I would experiment with is a plant called Plantain. wonderful help with mosquitoes bites, bee stings and removing poisons. Native American natives I think would put this leaves in the mouth, chew up mixing with saliva and cake on wounds and itchy rashes and stuff, vary good medicinal plant. you see that mimicked in old westerns, you can even wrap over the sore with a bandaid if you need to . I use for bug bites all the time, and can find this along trails and even grows some on poor soils. I would not at higher elevations though. So i would look that up when you read this and get to know this plant. UA-cam wont let me share photos.
There is a fire near Agness Oregon... which is what is impacting you guys. It's not close to trial. Ashland has been having horrible air quality. Take care

S-eye-ad valley.
👍👍
No poison ivy on the west coast. Poison oak on the other hand…
Out West - Near water sources there is poison ivy. Up on ridges most likely poison oak and more predominant.

I can tell you washing within 24 hours does not work. I get it baaaad, and I could bath in Calamine and it doesn't help. ms rumbles :-(
@@hikingwiththecodgers4086 - oh I'm sorry to hear that. I think it may work with some people, but not others.

The area your in doesn't have poison oak, it only grows where its shaded and has water
Hey guys.. Seeing this the 28th.. but huge fires in Canada drifting major smoke all over USA.. we’re NW Arkansas..and it was thick for a few days…
The smoke is coming from Canadian fires
Don’t know about fires in California but there is an app for it ,but fires in British Columbia is bringing smoke even to the South ( East Tennessee )🌿
You do not want to risk the poison oak, it can be extremely painfull😟
You saw Preston Peak in the Siskiyous
Don't know when this was filmed. There is a forest fires west of Grant's Pass and wind is pushing the smoke east.
Forest fires in oregon
Fire insurance is getting costly these days.
