Wow, this poor guy fighting for five years to get his garage built. Yet he pulled all of the permits that were supposed to make it all legal and yet the government kept stopping the job. Glad the mayor finally said, enough! We all know Mike Holmes and the crew would build it properly with the best materials. If only the world had more contractors with the ethics of Mike Holmes to make it right.
Seems to me like he wanted to build a separate dwelling but tried to slip it in under the guise of a "garage". How many garages have kitchens in them? I'm willing to bet this is the root of the problem. I doubt anyone cares if he dry walled the interior, but if the by-laws have guidelines surrounding that and you ask someone from the govt they are never going to tell you to ignore the guidelines. Plenty of technical infractions are tolerated because they are harmless. If you ask a cop if your tyres are too bald and he sees they are bald would you expect him to ignore that? Guy tried a bit hard to play the victim.
Wow you guys are the coolest team ever like I said before big huge fan you're the greatest you're the coolest I love what you do I watch you guys' videos all the time huge fan
I could live with that. For some reason the thing has the drain and the TP outlet in a vertical line. For me, it is the fact that the TP valve doesn't empty into a Smitty pan or outside the wall outdoors.
comically that little signature of his name in the concrete and the fact he did it, may have upped that properties resale value. the fact that theres documented proof he was there overseeing the rehab of the garage would let people know that it will stand for decades to come.
No that concrete siding can be a do it yourself, we did it when we resided our garage. Dang heavy stuff, wore us all out. But I didn't have to fix dinner and holds up well during a hurricane. We removed the cedar siding, which had held up pretty good.
Mike, I know you're in Canada but I really need help. I live in Ohio. Bought a house 2 years ago. It's an older house but since I moved in I've had multiple issues. Small septic tank that over fills with drainage water, flooded yard that smells like sewage, bedroom floor collapsed because the floor joists had rusted nails and no joist hangers. Floors are all wavy, toilet stack is cracked, no insulation in walls or ceiling, no ground wire on electrical plugs, old windows that leak water when it rains, shallow crawl space, no furnace only wall mount propane heaters. In the garage all the sill plates and studs are rotted out, garage is leaning, concrete is cracked and crumbly, old style ceramic fuses in garage, no ground plugs, ceiling is sagging, garage door has 2" cracks on both sides, too low to get my van into. I know I should have gotten an inspection but that was a condition of the cash only sale. I did take my dad and an Amish contractor to look at the place but they both agreed that it was a good investment. I bought what I could afford and now I'm living in a house that's crumbling. There has to be something you can do to help me. I'm not married, 54 yrs old and disabled. no kids except my 2 GSDs. They love the fenced in half acre but the yard is so muddy right now that when they come inside they are caked with mud. The mud creates dust and I breathe it in. Since it smells like sewage I don't know what I'm breathing in. I have to wear a CPAP at night and I have to change the filter once every 2-3 days. Please Mike, I need help and don't know where to turn. Some have suggested tearing the house down and starting over but I don't have any money to do that.
I had a 30x40 four bay garage built (three in front and one on the side). When it came to get the electrical inspected the new building inspector stopped the permit. He didn't inspect it doncha know! Guy knew nothing about post frame buildings. We went back and forth in email for two weeks then I finally called him and asked him to actually come and inspect the effing building. He did and was instantly satisfied. What this guy here went through is criminal. He should have sued the town/city.
Seem like he was trying to build a separate dwelling rather than a garage, but wanted to bypass the regs for that by calling it a garage, which is why he really had problems. At the end there it looked like a separate house.
That's Shawn Morren, original assistant and right hand man. He gradually trained Damon Bennett over the course of many seasons, and when he left after season 5, Damon stepped up.
It really appears to me that the councilman was in somebody's back pocket or on their payroll. Just too much interference and refusing to do what he was elected to do....represent the people!
I'm sure he has far more pressing things then someones drywall in the garage. His position was probably that the city has rules and everyone has to follow them, no exemptions for someone with too much money trying to build a dwelling but calling it a garage.
16:11. Not perfect, or even close, in MHO. What those guys did is lay a base coat and nail it down. Mistake #1, puncturing the membrane. Mistake #2, the right way to do it is to Soprema tar the plywood, and torch the base layer down. If a tornado rolled through, one loose edge or corner and the whole thing is gone. Mistake #3 3 layers is just not done on a residential garage. 2 layers is basically impenetrable, and you're still getting the same 30 years out of it. 23:28 No you don't, you need to splurge the $100 for a set of PacTool International SA903 2-Piece Gecko Gauge Hardi Board Siding Gauges. You level your first row, clip these on, and they hold all the following rows in place. 24:14 How is that better than the standard laser? It just means you now have to keep track of an accessory.
Ok. I'm only saying this dear Stella because your a Mike Holmes fan as I am, Well maybe in another way for you other then I because I'm looking more at Pinky then Mike or the others of his crew, LOL! but because your also a believer in making it right you must start pointing your camera in the right way and getting the entire show with in the frame other then cutting off the 4 corners of the said show. Other then that thx for posting Mikes show. I respect Mike and his lead staff whom all insist on a job done right. Thanks again!
It's a tactic to defeat the UA-cam bots. Just go to the gear icon in the corner of the screen and change Playback speed from "normal" to 75%. Then it will look and sound normal
Shawn and Damon on the same show!!!!
Shawn was the one that introduced Damon on one of the old shows!
Good to know @@stillhuntre55

Biggest pet peeve as a plumber--the copper pipe for the T&P valve coming down crooked from the water heater!!!!!

Love that you have the companies you use explain there products, I was gonna ask about those little sticks in the cement you poured.😮
It's steel rebar. Will help to keep the two concrete pours to stay together, not slip one over top of the other. Hope that makes sense
This guy’s problems with city council is probably why people don’t bother with getting all of the relevant approvals etc for building an addition.

Never said you couldn't just not DIY friendly.
Loved the show
It's not our fault the pad we poured isn't level 😂😂😂

Awesome Build

The Hardy board siding is easy to install. I did my 3600 square foot home and it was the first time using it. Did it myself. 😊

I would hire pinky to redo all the baseboards on my house, jk lol
It's Mike Homes" perfect.
I know 5 yrs must have sucked but on a brighter note Pinky is working on this project, what a woman and she is hot as hell
Finally caught Mike doing a no,no. When you start a concrete cutter, you place the saw on level solid ground and then pull the cord.
Maybe Canadian saws are better?? 😂
I wonder why this man needed a kitchen in his garage.
Seem like he was trying to build a separate dwelling rather than a garage, but wanted to bypass the regs for that by calling it a garage, which is why he really had problems.

You know mikes crew ain’t pulling the concrete
They did alot of dirty work in the early seasons when budgets were alot tighter
Hey Mike you are the best . Question ? When and why did you become a contractor ?
Isn't his upload ...I think his dad was a contractor and he followed his lead if I remember correctly
5yrs poor guy
why are all these videos zoomed in and sped up? makes them impossible to watch.
Was the politician Trudeaux...?
Um, this was 15 or more years ago...
@@Cheepchipsable Yeah...I was being facetious... :')
22:15 Anyone know the name of the guy Mike is talking to ?

This has to be on his worse jobs he has dealt with!!
THESE SHOWS ARE SPED UP
YOU CAN HERE THERE TALK IS
seems faster
You can slow them down by clicking the gear icon and lowering the speed.

I think its has to do with the old formated video to newer video format for UA-cam.
Thumb down for the sheer fact that the video is visibly sped up. Mike holms actual channel on UA-cam Zero videos sped up
It's a tactic to defeat the UA-cam bots. Just go to the gear icon in the corner of the screen and change Playback speed from "normal" to 75%. Then it will look and sound normal
no man would want an electric stove ..thats just not right
Saves you having to pipe gas and is more efficient.
@@Cheepchipsable no it isnt electric is more then gas
Who pays for all this work
why are the videos sped up? makes it a little hard to follow sometimes.
Change the playback speed to 90% under the custom setting.
Defeats copyright law basically
@@inaz1963 The real MVP in the comments - great info didn't even notice there was a custom setting!
