  • Longest video I've ever done, original length was almost 20 minutes! There are a couple of things that I in my opinion did wrong during this project. One of them was the tang construction which I wish I'd done differently so that it was more centered. The reason for this is so that I would have been able to set the guard more securely against the tang. It also caused the handle to be slightly offset from where it really should be according to the pictures and video I based the knife off. And also made for a weaker for construction overall I think
    However despite all the minor failures during the project, I learned a lot from it and that is what it's all about!
    Thanks for watching!

      Make N' Create Wouldn't a pin driven through at some point be a lot more secure? You can't really tell it's off centre in the video, it really does look awesome!

    • @aleksapajic3831

      Make N' Create Actually we can tell tjat is a little bit offset.. And 2 pins through the handle would be great for strength of tang.. But overall knife looks awesome, u did great job and u should be proud.. Please make more knifes like this in the future, some big rough indestructible looking choppers!!!

    • @rcreynolds6186
      @rcreynolds6186 6 років тому +2

      The offset isn't noticeable unless you are looking for it. As far as the tang design, unless you are using this knife as a chopper (which a knife should never be used for anyway...axes are for chopping, not knives) then this knife shouldn't fail. You didn't quench the tang and you tempered it correctly. There should be no problem. This is a very nicely made knife.

    • @1982matthewtaylor
      @1982matthewtaylor 4 роки тому

      Quenching in ice water?? Is that what i saw??? Realize just the guard if so but, dam it woud be real! Dam brittle would it not? Infact, sping steal would prob be ideal, ...😕
      Maybe thats how sping steal is made... But i though using water as a quench it should be about (160°----180°f°)
      *shruggs shoulders* dunno

    I love everything about this knife. We are our own worst critics however this knife totally speaks to me. I think that having the tang were it is lends strength to this knife as a chopper. I enjoy the beauty in the simplicity, The strength in its rugged finish, this is a man's knife.

  • @1982matthewtaylor
    @1982matthewtaylor 4 роки тому

    iv wanted a set up like that for long time, I also wanted this knife when i saw how easy it liberated Jaimie's sword hand from his arm :-)
    A) USUALLY All that scale should be removed, and NOT BEAT INTO the steal, jeopardizing its integritY, BUT in this case the pitting on the blade ( caused by all that scale ) looks appropriate, given its the goats, it deff wouldnt look right brushed or polished, despite the hollows* pitts* debris* anomalies* guaranteeing weaknesses in the grain structure ( i was cringing the whole time:) despite those issues,DUDE, F*%KING AWSOME AMAZING BLADE THAT IM TOTALLY JELOUS OF. GREAT SKILLS WITH THE HAMMER TOO

      You're welcome. The type of forge that I have is called a feltesse in danish. Which roughly translates to field forge in english. If you search for that (feltesse) on google you will find quite a lot of pictures of the same forge as mine. Could be a help if you plan to build one. Cheers!

      The epoxy he used is strong enough to hold that tang steady. The wood will crack and shred before the epoxy does. Modern epoxys are used to join re-bar to concrete floors in buildings. They can certainty handle a little knife.

    can i ask why do u sink the knife on oil ? to make the steel stronger? i know thats a process it has to be done , but curious. Also i wanted to know the oven part. Great vid pal

    • @c.g.278
      @c.g.278 6 років тому +1

      It's called "quenching," and it hardens the blade. He uses oil because it's an oxygen-free, universally friendly quenching environment. Quench the wrong steel in water and you risk cracking or totally shattering your creation.
      If I remember correctly, the oven treatment is to prevent post-quench warping.

    • @Hix1388
      @Hix1388 6 років тому

      C.G. the Jealous it's called tempering and it relaxes/regulates the crystalline structure of the steel it also softens it a little after the quench making sharpening possible

    • @MakeNCreate
      @MakeNCreate  6 років тому +1

      I did think about it but I've never ever had epoxy fail on a knife.

    • @rcreynolds6186
      @rcreynolds6186 6 років тому

      The only time epoxy would fail is if it was not mixed proportionately, if the tang is not fitted tightly to the handle, or if there are air pockets.
