Phil Vandelay I was thinking what part was unorthodox because he uses it a lot. Then I got to that “aha!” moment. That was a pretty cool use of a grinder.
again thank you Mr DiResta for showing me something i didnt think of. What a great way to put in the fuller.I had seen stuff like that done in woodworking so DUH of course it would work likea charm for this also. THIS is why i watch artists and craftsmen like you Mr. DiResta.
I watch your videos for a long time now, and this type of "classic" video is my favourite type. Just the making process without any ballast. Greetings from germany and keep on making things like this masterpiece.
Idk, but somtimes putting on some really chill music, turning down the youtube volume and just be amazed by the craftsmanships is real soothing for the soul!
Hello Mr DiResta, I just wanted to give you a well intended FYI. It's not usual practice in Blacksmithing to use cutting tools directly against the face of the anvil. The little step down between the horn and the face is called the cutting table, it's normally not hardened so it can be used as such without blunting your tools (or marring the face). For something too big for the table (like that beast of a knife) a cutting saddle or plate is used on the face to protect it. All the best from Blighty, great channel.
This video is Diresta as F. I mean that in the best way possible. I always love how your videos showcase your creativity. That's a hell of a knife too. Strong work, Jimmy.
I have an old hunk of steel I found while installing solar for a farmer....likely a tine off a plow or disc or something....anyway, I was hoping to make something with it, similar to this. Looks like I need quite a few more tools. And talent. Excellent work, sir. That's a beauty.
So, I love what you did with this piece, Jimmy. It's functional, and it's got a certain aesthetic quality to it. That said, it's hard to get a scale from the video, but I think you left "knife" territory about 6 inches ago. It's more of a Bowie Short Sword at this point. That doesn't stop me from wanting about ten of them.
Jimmy, it still amazes me how many different ways you use to do things. Whatever works! Also, can't wait to watch you make a gorgeous leather sheath for it! Love the videos man!
What a beast of a knife!?! The swift hammer replacement made me burst out with turgid laughter. It is that kind of inane ability and knowledge through years of incessant creativity and vitality, and the top notch content that will always make me love you more Jimmy! You're a Motherfracking genius! Lots of love!
Every one of your videos is a journey into your creative mind and this one is no different. When that hammer broke I thought "Oh no, what's he gonna do now? Where's he gonna get another hammer." but then I remembered that you have like a thousand of them. :-) Thanks for all the inspiration!
Leaf Springs is the main ingredient in making Knives in Sri Lanka. They pretty much don't use anything else before 2010. But I haven't seen anybody get creative with them like you! Impressive!!
I couldn't keep from thinking.... that you might be thinking ....of the thief who stole your trailer while you made this beast. Looked like a fun build.
This is an incredibly beautiful knife..The girth of it!!! I would love to make one this scale. Also borrowing your idea with the angle grinder anchored to the table :)
Techniques, ideas & completion, fabulous from start to finish, like we saw a master Smith in the arsenal of the ancients. Brought recollections of a Hollywood movie where the Smith adds a meteorite to the melt from which Bowie's knife is made. Thanks for sharing!
Mr. Diresta, you always have a unique approach to skinning a cat. I imagine you would tack weld the cat to a known thickness of metal and then proceed to machine fillet the skin from the cat. To each their own, I appreciate in the fullest someone that does not think inside a box. Paduak? Coco? Mahagony? Bloodwood? Wats the wood man? B A D A S S! Wicked Bro!
The New Diresta should have talked to The Classic Diresta into using the CNC for the brass and wood, and used the Torchmate to do the profile of the steel. 😜😂. Tons of tips in this video, great one Jim! Next up a sheath?
Hi, car/truck leaf spring steel is some of the best steel for making swords and knifes! Oh and to save on gas have two pieces of work going when your working on one to other is being heated! plus you get to make two items! cheers
Genuinely a fantastic video / build. Angle grinder jig is inspired. Jimmy you should go on Joe Rogan podcast, I'm sure you have lots of common ground. Bet he subscribes to you.
That is the most beautiful ugly beast I've ever seen!! Those rusty side marks in the blade are poetry! It impregnates her with a strong personality like marks of a person's own rough life... Very nice job indeed, sir.
Awesome job and video which is plenty of clever tricks I've never seen before. The shape reminds me the one Croc Dundee's carries in the movie in that very scene when he cuts that punk's jaket "This is a knife!". Congrats mate! Love it.
You all prolly thinking that he sped this up so that we can view the making of a Bowie knife in 12:37 minutes but no my friends. Jimmy diresta just works that fast
I think you might jhst give Crocadile Dundee a run for his money on "that's not a knife, this is a knife" argument. Nicely done. Love the brass work on this one for sure. Kind of gives it that old-school look. NICE!
Jimmy, it is crude. It is ugly. It has no balance. It uses glue (Bowie is spinning in his grave). It has a ridiculous number of rivets. I can't say enough how ugly it is. It's gonna rust. Did I mention it's ugly? Please, Jimmy, I'll trade you my firstborn for it...
Shrewd negotiating, but how would Jimmy know your crotchfruit will be worth a damn.... especially on your first try? What if it's ugly and full of rivets too?
nice :D i thought for a while that you would make a brass handle with wooden pegs, that would have been so cool/funny :D the handle you ended up making looks really awesome though and is probably more practical :)
That's a beautiful beast! I love the steam coming off the burrito. 😉 Seriously though, you always make me want to do whatever it is you make. Thank you for being an awesome inspiration!
This gets the medal for most unorthodox use of an angle grinder I've seen. Love it
Phil Vandelay I was thinking what part was unorthodox because he uses it a lot. Then I got to that “aha!” moment. That was a pretty cool use of a grinder.
And yet we are all going to try it at some point.
Nice way to lose your balls and shaft if the wheel shatters and your finger tips of it doesn't.
You have an eye for the task and you are an inspiration. Could not get away from the video for 12 minutes and 37 seconds. Thanks for showing us.
Loving the "old Diresta" style with the new camera -- the improvement in video quality takes it to the next level!
again thank you Mr DiResta for showing me something i didnt think of.

I clicked on this to see how you added the fuller. Did not disappoint. Looks great..
OH! MY! GOD! THIS IS A KNIFE! MOST TALENTED CRAFTSMAN ON UA-cam, BESIDE THIS "OTHER" SWORDMAKER! Diresta, you are a legend.
I am so happy you just picked up another hammer and kept going. Just seemed very satisfying to me.
seems to me like a drummer breaking his sticks and replacing them in a second jajaja it looks like it happens very often
Hahaha
2 years later and still my favourite knife build on UA-cam.
Your table angle grinder setup is by far the scariest, most ingenious setup I've ever witnessed. I love how your brain works. keep it up bud

I wonder where that chunk of metal has been and what it has seen in its life as a leaf spring. And now a new life as a famous knife.
