27 Year Old Rusty Rear Arches and Much More Made New Again! - WRX Restoration

- Welcome to the long awaited video of my Subaru Impreza getting the rear arches treated just like the fronts. I hope you will enjoy it.
So just like the front end the first job is to get the car in the air and get the wheels off. Once that was done it was time for the real work to begin.
The bumper was taken off for easy access and the brake calipers and discs removed, That gave me good access to all the other parts and i methodically stripped all the parts out one by one.
After everything was removed from the arches and rear floors i made a thorough visual inspection before proceeding to the cleaning stage. I soaked the rear floors and arches in a powerful de-greaser for half an hour before power washing it all off to leave spotlessly clean arches and floors.
I then made a rust repair on the lower bumper mounting point where it had rotted through, I made a cardboard template then transferred that to fresh steel and worked it until i got the shape just right. The rotten metal was then cut out and the repair panel welded in. I then made a nice shiny new bracket for holding the bumper.
I then went underneath the car and set about treating all the surface rust underneath. I ground and wire brushed all the corrosion off then treated the areas with Hydrate 80 rust treatment, left it to cure for 24hrs then it was time for some raptor liner.
I mixed up a total of 4 bottles of raptor liner to ensure good coverage and protection for the floor in years to come. Once applied it was left to cure and i made a start on prepping all the drive train and suspension components for refitting but the video was long enough already so i will save that for another episode.
so anyway Enjoy and please leave a like and comment if you enjoyed this video :)
See you al again soon

A little History
The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.
Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.
The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again .

A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.

Hey Guys, Please dont forget to hit that Subscribe button to keep up to date with all thats going on with the project. Thank you :)
I’m going to subscribe. These restoration videos really help. I’m trying to make a 1:8 LEGO technic model of this car with accurate features
No worries. I am sure that Subaru use the same grade of steel etc that Lancia used lol . Both hate our UK climate
Good video did you spray the raptor liner straight onto stone chip in the rear arches? It look3d like stone chip on the video but wasn't sure
Even though there's a shit load of Rust on the Chassis Components it is the build quality of these parts that's saved them from all that corrosion, Subaru built a bloody good Car & you've done a very good job on the refurb.
They had a 10 year warranty on corrosion.
Cracking film making Grommet!
3 camera angles when the diff meets the jack 👍
Cut to bolt dropping on floor after being punched out 👍
Plus many, many more moments of hilarity and joy 🖖
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Your camera angles, speed-ups, and jump cuts... Your videos are SO polished, it's a pleasure to watch.
Thank you so much that means alot to me especially when i really struggle sometimes with the filming and editing side of things.
On a quiet night in Scotland I bet you could hear that rear end rusting
oooh thats mean ... haha . does it make little crackeling sounds ?
Love this comment! I can just hear it in my head lol
“Hope you will join me in the next one “ just try keeping me away, the rust repair for the bumper bracket was just superb, simple job but expertly executed, great series as usual 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for your kind comment, I look forward to seeing you in the next episode :)
@@RRCRestoration i have one rc car that wont steer at all. Can you give me some suggestions on how to fix it?
@@harrygregory6227 check the servo
@@armoi539 the servo is working fine
You need to setup an Amazon Affiliates account and link all of the tools and supplies you use there. The degreaser for instance. I’d like to know which one you use.
I second this, i'll support. no question
Those completely rotten-through bolts coming out with just a handwrench is pure trolling.
This is gonna be one great looking WRX when it's finished :)
Thank you, Really cant wait to get it back out on the road now and see it in all its glory :)
@@RRCRestoration Just don't get it too dirty :))
@@Marty-Mc Dirt and snow are what WRX's are for!
Do they salt the roads over there bro, that car has a lot of rust under it and it's not that old
@@timsmith1589 They will do yeah. They do here in England at least so it's likely.
Doesn’t matter how long you make an episode, it just isn’t long enough 😄, great work as usual
High praise indeed :) Glad you are enjoying the project.
…never thought the lack of background music could be so refreshing; awesome craftsmanship 👍🏾👍🏾
This is stellar workshop ASMR, and I'm learning stuff that I can apply keeping my SG Forester alive.
Cannot be jealous of pure hard work, just motivated by this restoration
Loved this, can't wait for more of the WRX! Very satisfying watching the undercoat going on.
Glad you enjoyed it! :)
I am in the very beginning process of restoring my 2000 turbo WRX also. I love watching this because it is exactly the same chassis as what I am working with! Thank you!
Nice one, good luck with it.
This is car ASMR meets DIY and I love it. So relaxing to watch and learn from you, thank you.
Thank you for keeping the entire process of spraying on the liner in the video, you know what we truly want
You are so welcome! :)
A video 100% worth a like, a channel 100% worth subcribtion.
Quality & hard working.
This stuff is so addictive...
I Watch every Video several times over the years... Especially the de-rosting with the pressure Needle... um...thingy😎😎😎
Having so many rusty bolts they've come undone alot easier than expected 😂great work as always, by far the best restoration channel on UA-cam 100% 👌 big respect from your Welsh neighbour 🏴🤙
I was surprised at how easy it all came apart. No rusted on bolts ,stripped threads and bruised knuckles! Great video as ever. I was pleased to see that George was pulling his weight and lent a spare pair of hands when the petrol tank came out! Well done to you both and keep those videos coming.
Yeah it was a lot easier than i thought it would be, there are a few snapped bolts etc off camera but thats to be expected. Yeah it was nice of him to help out, I dont know if you noticed but for a vacuum cleaner his hands are surprisingly human like HAHA. Glad you are enjoying the project :)
Great content, you've nailed the balance of showing the removal of the old, the cleaning and the application of the new stuff.
Thank you, Glad you enjoyed it :)
You are the luckiest man alive. I have worked on cars as rusted as that and inevitably 1/4 of the bolts shear off when trying to remove them.
I’m a machinist and I love to see how you fix and restore this car! I’m learning a lot from this.
Glad you are enjoying it :)
You have been my favorite channel for years and have inspired my own restorations. People comment all the time how meticulously maintained and clean my vehicles are.
Thank you so much, really glad you like my channel :)
However much longer it takes you to get the right shot, setting up the camera, the camera getting in the way of the shot. It worth it, your end result is so polished and watchable.
Bless your soul that no broken or stripped bolts happened so far into the video 😎
painting rust converter onto all the rusty patches and hiding it all under underseal, where it festers, is a bodge. either sandblast it or use a wirewheel and de-ox gel to get clean bare metal and then you can primer, paint and underseal.
Hi thanks for your comment but i cann assure you there were no shortcuts taken with the underside if you watch my previous videos you will see i always, grind, wire wheel, cut out and treat all rust with deox before using hydrate 80 i dont do bodge jobs. The only reason i didnt show the process this time was that the video was starting to get a little long and ive shown the process many times before.
You clearly baked the car at the proper temperature. It coming out quite nicely.
The Subaru project is turning out great!!!!! The disassembly looked like it was a breeze with your impact driver! The undercoating process certainly went smooth for you!
Thank you, yeah the impact gun is a great bit of kit for this kind of work.
@@RRCRestorationI'll second that 👍
Its satisfying to see the wheel being shoved under the vehicle.
I always do that as an added precaution 😌👍
Thank you, I always do it better being safe than sorry especially while working on the car on jack stands.
Wow I was amazed when you started shaping the metal with the chisel. I never thought of that. This is an amazing build. I appreciate you sharing the process with us. I can wait for the next upload
Thank you so much for your kind comment. when you dont have a bead roller improvise, adapt, overcome as bear grylls would say haha.
So satisfying to watch. I’ll be honest I was expecting to see nothing but rot on those rear arches.
Glad you enjoyed it :) I always kept the arches on this car fairly clean as i know what they are like for rusting haha
watching this is encouraging me to get off my ass to work on my legacy. Thank you!
Glad i could motivate you, good luck with your legacy :)
I love your channel. Doing this kind of work is hard/time consuming. Doing this kind of work AND filming takes it to the next level. Thanks so much for sharing!
Simply magic... So joyful watching your work. Absolutely fantastic.... But too short videos 😁
I shall renew my youtube every hour of every day untill i see my notifications of the next episode. This is easily the best channel on youtube and thanks to you i finally know what i want to do with my life and my school
Wow, thanks! Glad you are enjoying my work :)
Incredible restoration but that rust would make baby Jesus cry, living in Australia this type of rust just doesn't happen here, but you can see how the effort is worth it.
I have to admit of being deeply envious of your dry climate, here in Scotland the rust is just unstoppable :(
It will look like an original rally car.
Nice job. 👍🏻
Only a few months ago I was applying upol gravi tex to arches and underbody, can't beat that satisfaction of seeing that fresh thick paint cover the old worn coating giving everything a new lease of life
Exactly nice to hear that someone else gets the same satisfaction i do from undersealing :)
The fact that none of these bolts are hit with PB blaster and are coming out is incredible. My 08 wrx even has trouble coming apart from being a little crusty..
They were already loosen
Finally more on the WRX!
plenty more to come aswell ;)
Liking the video while the ad before the actual video is running 'cause i already know it's gonna be a good one 👍
I like your faith in me for making a good video :)
Jesus, and I thought I had it bad with surface rust on my Dnepr? Wow. Brave man.
The sound of you applying that raptor liner was like some artsy beatboxing
Minty fresh!
That is one crusty sub frame, I shall look forward to seeing that get "the treatment!"
Top job dude.
Very nice to see you, I hope your keeping well? If it works the way i want it to i think you'll enjoy how im going to deal with all the rusty components ;)

@@RRCRestoration I did thank you and it was worth staying up LOL
Why do I love your channel? Look at 13:50 where you punch the sheet metal on the bumper bracket to curve and match the factory body lines! I would have simply would have ran a bunch on weld to hold it on and sanded from there, but you took the time to actual make it "factory" keep up the great work! Would love to see a new sub project soon! Cheers!
Beautiful work! I'm so glad the WRX is back! Looking forward to the next episode! ❤
Thank you very much! plenty more to come ;)
@@RRCRestoration Yay!
Its videos like this that make me thankful for living in a dry climate haha
I really wish i lived in a dry and warm climate but then i think if that was the case then i wouldn't be bringing you these videos haha
@@RRCRestoration That is very true, also it gets stupid hot here in summer like 46C so its not pleasant haha

This is so awesome, thanks for saving an old WRX!!!
Glad you liked it! :)
So look forward to these videos makes lockdown a bit more bearable, roll on the next!
Thank you, Im really glad you are enjoying the project :)
These videos give me so much inspiration to fix my wrx! Gonna get her in the garage as soon as the salts off the street !!!
Glad i could inspire you, Have fun :)
Love they way you swaged the repair strip ....quality...👍👍👍..during first lockdown I rebuilt the rusty tub on my L200...wish I had seen that little trick last year....would have saved me a number of goes to get it right...👍👍
Wow, here in Kansas, and my hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana rust like that, you could get a quarter of those bolts and nut freed. Great work my friend, it’s going to be a hell of vehicle.
So lucky we don’t have salted roads here in Perth WA.
Another good job well done! Can’t wait for the next one.
I'd love to live in a nice dry climate with no need for road salt, but that being said if that was the case i wouldnt be making these videos haha. A bit of heat and sunshine would be nice though haha
Great project. I liked seeing how you shaped the metal with just simple tools.
Thank you very much. Its amazing what you can accomplish with simple tools and patience although in an ideal world a bead roller would have made the process alot quicker haha
WRX brought me to your channel. Your quality work kept me here. Keep up the great work man!
Awesome! Thank you so much :)
Stuff like this must be so cool to do man. Spending a good amount of time caring, repairing and polishing a car back to its prime looks so fulfilling. Dont really have the skills tools and money to start a project like this. Enjoying this restoration anyways! Good videos
Stressful few days and watching this was so engaging and relaxing - amazing work and thankyou!
You're so welcome! Really glad you enjoyed it : )
I am so impressed with your absolute level of expertise in the repair of motor vehicles!!
I've been placing myself in learning mode over the last 6 months or so & through viewing these types of instructional videos I've watched dozens believe me but as far as I'm concerned personally, I reckon you are the best by a long way!! You're the type of guy who could sell a heater to an Arab living in his tent in the middle of a bloody desert!!
Your total level of workmanship coupled with finesse (as that is what it really amounts to) is just so superb. Therefore as I side issue & to the point regarding vehicle repairs, tell me just what the hell can't you do??? I reckon (& with the utmost respect of course) you'd be useless in the damn kitchen???🌭🥪🌮 I'm therefore watching your every move!!
i really wanna see the 3wheelwe finished it was so closeeeee. none the less great video!
More coming soon from the ATC just waiting on the chrome plating to arrive back.
Love the white coating, not sure how practical it will be, but it will look great at least once!
In theory it should stay spotless with a good clean every now and again but only time will tell
Stunning work. Recording and doing the job at that height is five star!
Thank you so much :)
Oh, I learn a lot by watching your videos, they are so inspiring. Thank you so much and keep up your great work!
brill work, hope to see the old girl back on the road soon, keep up the good work and keep the vids coming cheers matt
Thank Matt, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel now, cant wait to hit the open road and open her up a bit and hear that flat 4 sing again :) Plenty more videos to come.
@@RRCRestoration no probs, we all need to enjoy life, and enjoy our hobbys,

Hi Norm, Really glad you are enjoying the project :)
I'd like to do this to my Bugeye. Your channel is a good source for doing these small but necessary repairs. Love the videos wish I had the space you have to rebuild my Bugeye. Keep em coming can't wait for the next video.
Always nice to hear from a fellow Subaru owner :)
Not one broken bolt, no way! I will continue watching this luck. 👍🏼
Thanks 👍 :)
So happy rust isn't a problem where i live. i took apart a 1972 CB450 and although a bit rusty in parts, all the screws came out easily. Only surface rust
Id love to live in a climate where rust isn't an issue, cars and bikes dont last long over here :(
It always an immense plasure to see you work on your projects and especially on this one. Because I am a big fan of early 90s' JDM sport cars.
Thank you very much! :)
Never understood the trouble of having the combo disc/drum setup for the emergency brake. Makes a lot more sense and a lot simpler & cheaper to do it the Honda way...rotate the disc piston with a cable and actuator arm. Easy peasy.
Excellent job shaping that piece of metal
Thank you :)
You are amazing, thank you for sharing this, I've learnt so much just by watching the way you use different tools and techniques. Superb work!
That was a lot of rust left on the floor. I was getting concerned that there wasn't going to be much of the car left...LOL.... Great job.
Haha yeah ive actually got it all swept into a neat little pile and im going to weigh it all when im done to see how much weight ive removed from the car.
Nice bit of work, please keep them coming, love the way you do things.
I've been looking forward to this update for so long!
I hope it didn't disappoint? :)
@@RRCRestoration Never! The level of detail is amazing! Looking forward to the next one

You have inspired me to do the same with my blobeye WRX. It's not too bad just now, but I don't want to let it get worse.
very interesting series this
gonna watch them all again
Great update mate. It’ll be whistling from its turbo before you know it. Keep them coming.
Thank you, Really glad you enjoyed it :) Cant wait to get it back out after all these years
These have an interesting rear brake setup. Never seen a car have both drum and disc brakes merged into one
Lots of cars have started using this design. The drum setup is only the parking brake
@@isaakstagl3749 I assumed that was the case, I read that a few BMW's have this dual setup. Just hadn't seen it before, it's always been one or the other
Thanks for the Impreza video. Thoroughly enjoyed it. It's given me inspiration for my 1998 Impreza Turbo (one owner from new - me) to get the restoration started. Look forward to the next update!
Nice, i would have loved to own one of these brand new. Good luck with your restoration im sure you'll enjoy every minute of it :)
Genius. So impressed with both the work and the camera work.
Is there anything you don't do at a superlative level?! Hmm?
You can call yourself lucky with that great workshop!
I just imagined this job done in my wet concrete backyard at athe actual conditions...brrr...
Great job, thx for the vid!

I am so grateful to have a workspace like this, i know what its like to try and work on cars outdoors when its raining and blowing a gale its no fun at all. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Looks like that wrx is been restored at the right time, it's a bit crusty underneath. Good work
Yeah catching it just in time i think. Its totally my own fault for not storing it correctly im paying for it now haha
A pleasure to watch ! TY
Thank you :)
Very well done. I have finally started on my restoration of my vehicle and I needed to start with a needle scaler to remove the rust and it works fairly well. Just started and about 3 pounds of rust removed and more to go. Enjoy all your videos. Cheers.
Thank you ,i think im going to needle scale most of my parts too just to save putting to much wear on the blaster and media.
Someone get this man some new welding gloves! Love the work. This car is coming along nicely
Haha yeah the gloves are a bit work worn these days. Glad you are enjoying the project :)
That wing is pretty sick
I like your style and editing. It's like working on cars back in Michigan xD.
Thank you , Glad you enjoy it :)
This is the first video I see of your channel. The amount of effort you put in the video editing and the love you give to that car is amazing! Great content dude! ❤️
I like the raptor liner stuff pretty cool that you can tint it. I always feel a bit suspicious of old factory under-seal, but I guess you can usually tell when it’s started to rust underneath as it starts to come away from the surface or has air bubbles.
10 years ago I would have been jumping up and down as to why you didn’t modify it, now I have a fine appreciation for it. Good work
Ive got to admit 10 years ago id be the same " i dont care about the rust just modify it! " haha now its a case of nope i want it factory fresh with nice sensible upgrades. Strange what the ageing process does to your attitude lol
@@RRCRestoration definitely mate. I’m actually relieved to not see an afterburner exhaust hanging off the back of it.
