  • So here we go with the job ive been DREADING! tackling the rust removal on all of the rear end components.
    First thing i done before tackling any nuts and bolts was to give them a liberal soaking with WD-40 to try and make life a little easier and im glad to say it worked a treat.
    As you can see from the video tearing down the subframe is a piece of cake, hubs off , remove the diff, flip it over and remove the lateral arms bish bash bosh done!
    Now that everything is in component form it was time to remove all the worn bushes and that is the main reason i took the complete rear end out was to get all all the bushes, they are easily removed with the use of a press and after nearly 30 bushes were pressed out i was ready for the next stage.
    Most of the parts were too big for my blasting cabinet so i decided to go a slightly expensive but very effective route, first i removed all of the heavy rust with the help of my needle scaler then i built an mdf box big enough to hold all the parts and then filled it with boiling water and DEOX C and left it for a day to eat its way through all the rust and when i came back to it as you can see by the video all the parts were beautify clean and ready for a coat of primer to stop them flash rusting while i was doing the repairs.
    There weren't too many repair to be done, a few new brackets needed fabricating and a couple of support plates on the underside of the subframe needed plating and welding but apart from that all the parts are in good condition and still very strong.
    I then etch primed the repairs and gave all the coats a good few coats of high build primer and a high solid 2k gloss black to protect the parts from rusting again for years to come. Now as i said in the video im not concerned about the rust pitting on the parts as they wont be seen and this isn't a restoration project i am simply getting the car back up to a suitable standard to go back on the road and for it to last for many years to come so please don't bombard me with comments about the pitting i left.
    While the paint was drying i made a start on zinc plating all the old fasteners that i could re-use, obviously any damaged bolts will not be re used but any in good condition will be perfect to use again when re plated and dont forget im a thrifty Scotsman so every penny saved and all that jazz ;) haha.
    After the plating that was everything done for this episode so i present the final shots and bid you a farewell till next time :)

    A little History
    The project in question is the engine bay in my 94 Subaru Impreza WRX. As i can be heard saying in the intro of this video i love impreza's and i wanted a rust free one as all the UK ones suffer from lots of rust issues so in 2004 i imported this car from Japan and it was totally rust free when it arrived all those years ago. It has a couple of blisters here and there now but thats to be expected when living in Scotland.
    Anyway im getting off track, I was having lots of fun driving the car at full boost everywhere until 2014 when the thought popped into my head " lets go for more power" so i took the engine out and begun the process of having it all upgraded, better gaskets, race bearings, forged pistons, con rods etc etc then life got in the way and the engine was put to the side and the car was stored in a shed for the past 5 years.
    The initial condition of the car looks horrifying but its only a thick layer of dust and crud on it and there is a good layer of carnuaba wax separating all the crud from the paint so a quick pressure wash and she'll be looking good again .

      Your accent is fine. The narration is exactly where it needs to be. You explain the plan of attack, shut the hell up and do it, then come back when it's the next step. Literally the perfect balance.

      You can use regular vinegar too. Get the strong stuff and don't breathe it in.

      @@cccpkingu Vinegar won't leave the metal looking that pristine, I think in part because it "stains" the bare metal but will clean the rust off. The fact that the parts looked like they had just been manufactured is astounding.

      NorthEast rust belt sufferer here. I completely gave up on my long bolt, mainly since I'm swapping knuckles but still when he gently tapped it out, I was in awe. There's still all that flaked rust to contend with - looking forward to seeing the outcome.

    Quick tip for anyone doing this sort of work themselves, from a Toyota restoration specialist across the water in Northern Ireland. Deox-C is amazing stuff, I would be lost without it. But I don't pay a premium for the logo on the bottle for large batches like this where you need a large quantity of it. Deox-C is little more than re-branded citric acid. I buy it in 25kg packs from online retailers at 1/4 the cost of what BH sell it for, and it's available in smaller quantities like 5kg as well. I'm not knocking BH at all, their products are all excellent. But restoring classic Japanese sports cars is expensive enough as it is, and saving a few pounds here and there can make all the difference.

    I understand exactly ZIP of cars. Never even removed a headrest for vacuuming since I was afraid I couldn't get it back on!

    I did the same job on a GC end of 2019 and wow what a load of work. My subframe and knuckles weren't salvageable though. So, I used a set along with some other rear end components and hardware I got in trade for a 30 rack of beer. Grinding and hammering the rust off the diff was a real pain as well. Yours was in much nicer shape than mine. The diff cover had corroded so badly it actually had a hole once the corrosion was removed. Even with the replacement knuckles I had to weld and build up the e-brake shoe backing points as they had some holes, then grind them flat again. I had to removed rust behind the backing plate, hammer it back down, and weld it so it wouldn't expand out again. The ABS sensors were an absolute terror to get out of the old knuckles, but they're so expensive so I tried to save them. Were I to do it all again on a restoration car I planned to keep forever, I'd likely rather buy a lot of new components instead. Especially given how much fits from the GD/GG cars. That said, my reasoning was similar to yours. Structurally sound bits and a car that would be driven hard and didn't need factory fresh. Plus it saves a ton of money. Agree with you on the hardware as well! People don't realize it would be quite a bit of money to replace all those nuts and bolts.

      Hey, Thanks for your comment sounds like you had a rough time salvaging your GC, like yourself when i dropped all the parts out i was thinking yup this is gonna be expensive but after a more thorough inspection amazingly all the components were still 100% structurally sound despite their appearance haha and your spot on about the hardware its not long in adding upto mental money thats why i always reuse if i can.

      @@RRCRestoration Definitely rough! Unfortunately the car itself is destined for scrap. Worst frame I have ever seen on a GC with very bad previous repairs as well. Rockers gone and crazy bad past quarter repairs as well. They didn't even bother to connect the wheel well to the outer metal. Put the new rear end in it just to have fun with it while it lasts, and I'll keep all the parts I restored when it goes. Bought the car for the turbo engine swap it had in it and a lot of upgrade parts! I just love Subaru. Thanks for replying and the awesome vid!

    That needle scaler and compressor got a hell of a workout there!!! Needle scaler saves a ton of time though. I got mine well over 25 years ago and it paid for itself the first time I used it. I admire your tenacity. Most folks would've just junked that subframe and replaced it with how bad it was.

    A lot of people would rather replace over restore. Personally I think a nut and bolt restoration is the best way too do any classic with some rare classics replacing things devalues the vehicle

    My favorite kind of repairs I do to vehicles is chassis. You have blown me out of the water on the extensive work you've done. Bravo!!
    When I did my work on my legacy gt. I really would have loved to do a re spray of th rear sub frame. Everything else was just replaced with newer arms and poly bushings.

    I had an 02 WRX and the rear knuckle bolt Was seized and did not come out You are so lucky you got both of those out with that little effort Just mind blowing to me I hear that that's a big thing With that bolt in particular seizing

    Great job on those rear end bits your attention to detail is brilliant and at least you know you can use the Car whenever and it’s functional without the worry of it getting damaged in anyway and not on show in a garage lock up somewhere being looked at occasionally. Spot on.

    Nicely done. I am doing my truck and I removed about 20 pounds of rust just from the rear frame. That does not count for the cab where the rockers are mostly gone and part of the floor as well as the box sides. I would need a 500 to 700 gallon tank and rust remover to dip the frame so I am going to try a rust paint which seals the little rust that will be left and converts it to a phosphor compound that will not rust again. I do have a suggestion for you to improve the efficiency of the needle scaler. I have the same unit and what I did was to sharpen the needles to a dull taper and it was amazing how much better it works now. Looking forward to the next video.

    Idk if an old one can do the same performance as a new one,- but a Bead Roller - Restoration would be a nice project & show&tell what you can do with it . ? I would watch it!

    I can't believe how good those parts looked after the deox c treatment. My jaw dropped! It's amazing with some chemistry you can turn rusty junk into something usable again. I'm a bit jealous you didn't have to fight on those bolts, we get hammered with salt on the east coast of the states and its a bear to remove parts. Haha love George's work and the editing

      Thank you, yeah meticulously restored cars are cool to look at and stuff if thats your thing but for my own cars i much prefer clean and functional "restoration" so that i can use it and not have to worry about scuffing up a pristine underside.

    Living in Australia my whole life I didn't even know it was possible to get anything this bad.
    All of our subframes still have the factory powder coating. All that you have to do to get them to look new is to pressure wash them and use a bit of degreaser haha

      We don't salt roads, worst we get is 4wd chassis and diffs going bad from beach work.
      But Lanolin fixes any chance of steel going bad if applied regularly.

    Nice work! But please consider Hydrogen embrittlement when plating high-strength steel bolts (like the ones you show here). You may consider annealing you fasteners.
