There used to be a time when luxury was defined by the quality of materials, design and workmanship. It seems these days it's defined by the amount of new gadgets.
Actually, for most people, "luxury" isn't specifically defined by either, it's defined by "exclusivity" and "status", which really has never changed. Since quality, design and workmanship is something that even regular cars these days have, it has forced "luxury" manufacturers to find other ways to make their vehicle meet buyer expectations. The best way there is to innovate, introduce more complexity and advanced technologies into there cars. It's not good enough anymore to just make your car refined and wrap it in leather, because even a Kia does that.
It was all sedans... so much variety. Now there are sedans and SUVs. From that standpoint, there is MORE variety. Unfortunately, there are now half as many transmission options. That's the real problem.
bc imagine NOT wanting an SUV. SUVs are 10x more comfortable, they look very nice, and starting to handle very well these days. I hate sedans. They are priced similar to SUVs and small and so uncomfortable
The taillights are actually little OLED displays (like the kind some phones and TVs have) and apparently change the design based on what drive mode you’re in
@@mayanklongiany6311 software fixes burn in, it’s why iphones still have always on displays. every new oled tv has pixel shift firmware built in, many (if not all) of the panel vendors ship with the software included with the display purchase. audi undoubtedly has it in the tail lights as well.
I love that getting into a sedan is now enough of a concern that cars will move up on their suspensions so that the owner doesn't have to pivot their hips and turn to sit down. Soon the seat will turn and dump you out so you don't have to get up either. 🙄
I’ve always wanted one of those big lazy boy chairs that has the controller to lift me/the chair into standing position so I don’t have to try to get up on my own

You're absolutelyright. The "Sporty SUV" is a terrible trend. Just because you slapped a big V8 into a 2.5 ton behemoth, you didn't make it sporty. Sportiness isn't about straight-line performance. Besides that, as you mentioned, they all look the same
I can say the same about sedans starting to look too similar. Maybe not so much the high end one's, but a lot of design choices seem to be going in odd directions.
The "tap and push down" feature is called haptic feedback and it can be turned off in the settings. Settings -> Display and Brightness -> MMI -> Touchscreen Feedback. Some people like it others don't. You criticized it on other Audi models before but it is really a feature that can be turned off and it shouldn't be mentioned as a negative point :)

Interesting video, as always, though I have to kindly disagree in the interior design. That MB S-class looks like a Chinese souvenir shop, while the A8 looks all-professional, all-business, restrained, a little bauhaus-ish and classy, IMHO. Yeah, different tastes and all that..... :-)
I agree so much. I’ve always loved Audi’s restrained designs, especially from the late 90s/early 2000s. Most people find them to be boring- but to me they achieve a sort of elegance and refinement from the simplicity.

Can you lock it so it can't be swiped and only has the operations the driver uses? Lock out everything else? I ask because my elderly mother can't work a smartphone. Much less swiping and scrolling a car.
Audi hasn't gone bonkers yet and they still make beautiful and capable cars, compared to BMW with their absurd grilles and headlights and Mercedes with their full cinema with a little bit of car
Relating to the interior, Mercedes or other brands may have what appears to be fancier designs but in Audi fashion I believe they will one day look extremely outdated while the Audi will still be in range.

However, Audi just does enough and i don't mean that in a bad way they're not trying to stay "up to date" per se but rather sticking to a constantly evolving philosophy on how cars should be made

Crazy to remember Audi started that large grille trend almost 20 year’s ago with the (I think ‘05 or ‘06) A6. Everyone was talking about the “single-frame” grille and how weird it looked. Eventually, it grew on us and automakers started copying Audi. Now they’re everywhere and annoying, but it looks at home on Audi.
They were on the front foot. Chinese customers love a bold face and Audi realised this long ago. Unfortunately, it's commerce, rather than design language that has made the 'bold' grille a car-design staple.
The first time I noticed it was the R8. But a few years before that I’d noticed the top and bottom grille could be one piece with the license plate not on its own trim piece, so I felt validated when they did it lol

For me I don’t mind them. It’s what people like. It’s their choice. There’s no law about what to buy and what not to buy. It’s a free market so people can buy SUVs all they want. Heck my parents drives SUVs and I don’t mind them. If your parents drive SUVs maybe you shouldn’t say that

Doug the car has lane assistance, its a button on the indicator lever, and it will steer by itself brilliantly. In fact this was the first car with Level 3 of autonomous driving capability. even my older A8 has steering assistant. I really don’t know what you are talking about to be honest. Be more professional please. Also the new S class is shit in my personal experience. I have driven both and prefer the A8, the S class is only slightly more advanced because it is a newer model at the moment. Stop glorifying the S class all the time.
Some of these “luxury” touches are just misdirected. Luxury is comfort and rich material and textures not having to go through a 4 step process to just open or close an air vent🤦🏽♂️
Anyone else have the opposite reaction to when he compared the Mercedes' interior to this car's interior? I literally went, "Ugh!" when he showed the Mercedes. Their interiors are borderline tacky.

I see the fact that Audi's interior design isn't as pompy as its competitors is to its benefit. The S Class interior, for instance, could be seen as gaudy and over-done by some, and the S8's more minimal and understated interior could be more appealing to some target demos, and a differentiating counterpoint in that market. This observation applies to pretty much all VAG's products, and I think VAG customers value this.
If people wanted minimalism, they wouldn't get the top of the line Audi/Mercedes. These cars are supposed to be unique and the S8's interior is as minimal as a 2022 Civic.

That suspension raising up when you open the door is cool but I would not want that feature years down the line. I have an old S class right now and I’m afraid of touching any of the buttons dealing with the air suspension🙈
you cant compare an s class. Audi a8 are rather good in that department. The raising feature is a 880Nm motor cycloidal drive on each wheel and serves as a sway bar . It aint failing for a long time or ever. Cycloidal drives are crazy reliable. I had old sclass, the air spring design was inferior, large cap at the top would leak. A8 D3 uses 2 simple oring and seal forever. D4 uses a oring and a weirder seal at the top but it`s very strong. Your sclass has the same aircompressor, they require dryer media to be dumped and replaced. If you dont, thats where water gets in the system and cause issues. Its well known on commercial trucks. Get your dryer serviced or replace the compressor entirerely, its only 300$ now
Yes this handles like a yacht and the fact that it's 1000lbs heavier than the r8, but if you want practical luxury sedan with performance of a supercar, then the S8 is the best.
Mercedes S Class also looks like a big C Class... I don't like the aesthetics of the BMW G70 but is the only flagship sedan that is totally diferent from the rest of the line.
I have never turned off my climate control. I can count on one hand how many times i actually even changed from auto. Just wait for those cool doors to break closed lol
I'm surprised to see the rear seats don't recline or have anything interesting back there at this price point, and all the hard shiny surfaces...I get the subtle exterior but this to me doesn't look like $120k without options.

I find that for a lot less money you can get a fully specced G90 with heated/cooled memory rear seats and everything else, with arguably better looks and arguably a nicer interior, especially the upcoming one which looks closer to a Rolls Royce than an Audi A8. I still like Audi's exterior styling despite their lights not being as cool as they used to be, and I'm sure this one is quite fast, but I'm not sure it looks like a 6 digit car.
The S8 reviewed in the video is really poorly equipped with extras, it's nearly empty. If you option this thing up, there will be way more features than what it has in the video, just watch some other videos of fully equipped A8s

Hey those are genuine mass produced in China "luxury" screens. Consumer stupidity is a great opportunity to cut costs with simple screens and software.
The and the S-Class make sense and no one can hate them, for being the benchmarks for top of the line luxury sedans. The new 7 series on the other hand looks like a wannabe luxury sedan which makes it crap.
I want to hack into this car and engage the auto lift BEFORE they reach for the door handle. The driver keeps reaching; the car keeps dodging their hand.
Lets keep in mind that the interior design of the audi s8 is from 2018 when this car was officially released, while new S class and BMW 7-series are 2021 and 2022 models. I think the comparison will be fair when Audi release their new A8 vehicle
The a8 wont be renewed. Its dead because they didnt give the right flagship experiences and clients went elsewhere because of that. Aside from the 2004-2010 a8, all the others were inferior in ride softness and interior noise. Yes its a more agile flagship than bmw and merc but they missed the mark since most buyers were in those for the plushyness and comfort. 70db roadnoise at 110kmh is just too much
The S8 is boring, it depends. I like all german brands, but I'd get an Audi over any BMW or Merc, and I owned a car from all three brands. I cant say merc or bmw is ugly, I just dont like it and its the same for others. Thats why we have options. But one thing I have to say, Audi is the brand that will always bring the big tech to the mainstream buyer. In 2017-2018, everyone was hyped about the new screens, virtual cockpit and the tech that Audi has in the lineup. Every car reviewer said "Oh this 7 series/ S class, E class, 5 series, Lexus blah blah is not on the same level with Audi". All brands followed Audi and now they are on top. Now they say that Audi is not on the same level with them because Audi is behind, working on the next big thing. Just remember, your everyday B6 Passat had parallel "self parking" in 2008, a feature you could find only on a flagship car.
That function when it rises every time you open the door, is the most annoying thing for a photographer when you wanna take a quick photo or video sequence somewhere. So that's the first thing I disable when getting this car 😜
Watching this video from a country in development and seeing Doug saying "it's fine" for a dashboard that looks like a spaceship control makes me realize how spoiled people in the developed world are, holy shit.

Dude, I live in the USA and I see nice cars here and there, but after actually sitting in an A8 at a dealership, I can say without a doubt that this interior is exceptional Sure it doesn't have ALL the features, but does it NEED them? @@ccllvn yeah you're right, the EQS has more features for only a couple grand more than an S8, but I think the dash is still a really great design, and even better, you could buy a used 2018 A8 or newer used S8 with the same interior with the same options for way less than MSRP. I think these cars will be great used cars but not good new (right now), similar to some Lexus products
Audi's are cool because they're not as smug as Merecedes and not as brash as BMW. This was the prettiest car in this segment and imo it still is. I'd buy an S8 over a "regular" S-Class any day of the week, and those S-Classes are real marvels. Ever simce "Ronnin" dropped the S8 is one of my hero cars, I'm looking at D2 S8's to buy right now.
The Mercedes Benz screen style is way overkilled, the way Audi does it its better, it does the exact same things but more moderate and you won’t risk getting a headache when driving at night.

There’s a reason they say Audis have the best interiors out of the big German three. They’re consistent, timeless, use the best materials, and most importantly, they don’t incorporate tacky designs or elements. They keep it authentic and understated..
Doug, please stop saying the Haptic Touch can’t be turned off. It is easily turned off in the settings menu under settings > display and brightness > MMI > touchscreen feedback.
Doug you gotta check out the D2 S8 the first audi luxury S8 those cars are still pretty good for a luxury boat of a car weighing only 1700kg having real torsen quattro and even a manual transmission option!

Flashy cars always had flashy interiors. Some people wanted subtle sure but overall it was always as cool as the times/tech allowed them. you can find a lot more people paying top dollar for flashy things than people paying that kind of money for "subtle". If you go into a dealership and see an A6 for 65k and A8 for 100k its difficult to justify that massive price difference when they both look exactly the same without any option to change it. Merc has a great interior line up for this now IMO. C class is really cool but kind of small, E class is big but not as interesting. S class is both.

Manufacturers need to stop with all these shiny and glossy surfaces. Aside from being fingerprint and dust magnets, the sun can blind you off many of these surfaces… and I don’t just mean panels but also the chrome accents like the audi logo on the steering wheel gives you a nice sun in your eyes when the sun catches it just right, why not just make these some matte metal

I prefer the A8 dashboard instead of the Mercedes. The Mercedes looks like a cheap dashboard with some classic tablets. Tablets is for Tesla, not for a luxury car.
Not having lane keep assist on a luxury car in 2022 is inexcusable. A base model '22 civic has a full driver assist suite that works PERFECTLY, for a car that costs less than 20% what the S8 does
The S8 has lane keep assist. But its rly worse. Thats the standard lane keep assist every Golf gets too. It just bounces you between the two lane marks on the road. VW has a new better system named travel assist which places you in the middle of the road and adjusts the speed automatically. Unfortunately Audi doesnt have this tech yet.

Relating to the interior, Mercedes or other brands may have what appears to be fancier designs but in Audi fashion I believe they will one day look extremely outdated while the Audi will still be in range.
I prefer Audi design in general, Mercedes looks too "gadgety", too "futuristic" for me.

Crazy to remember Audi started that large grille trend almost 20 year’s ago with the (I think ‘05 or ‘06) A6. Everyone was talking about the “single-frame” grille and how weird it looked. Eventually, it grew on us and automakers started copying Audi. Now they’re everywhere and annoying, but it looks at home on Audi.

They were on the front foot. Chinese customers love a bold face and Audi realised this long ago. Unfortunately, it's commerce, rather than design language that has made the 'bold' grille a car-design staple.
I think it was 2004 A8 with 6.0 W12-engine that had the first singleframe grill.

The first time I noticed it was the R8. But a few years before that I’d noticed the top and bottom grille could be one piece with the license plate not on its own trim piece, so I felt validated when they did it lol
My gripe with suv’s.. i don’t like them but pretty much everything on the road is a crossover of some sort and when im behind them i cant see shit unless i also have a high car

Doug the car has lane assistance, its a button on the indicator lever, and it will steer by itself brilliantly. In fact this was the first car with Level 3 of autonomous driving capability. even my older A8 has steering assistant. I really don’t know what you are talking about to be honest. Be more professional please.
Also the new S class is shit in my personal experience. I have driven both and prefer the A8, the S class is only slightly more advanced because it is a newer model at the moment. Stop glorifying the S class all the time.

Anyone else have the opposite reaction to when he compared the Mercedes' interior to this car's interior? I literally went, "Ugh!" when he showed the Mercedes. Their interiors are borderline tacky.
You can turn the haptic screen off in the settings and it will preform like a normal touch screen.

Yeah I use it on my A5. I notice not everyone knows about it though, I’ve seen videos of people struggling with the battery because they don’t realize the tray can hold itself up
They are on a lot of cars. I have had it in all my Mercedes, VW and Peugeots etc

I see the fact that Audi's interior design isn't as pompy as its competitors is to its benefit. The S Class interior, for instance, could be seen as gaudy and over-done by some, and the S8's more minimal and understated interior could be more appealing to some target demos, and a differentiating counterpoint in that market. This observation applies to pretty much all VAG's products, and I think VAG customers value this.

That suspension raising up when you open the door is cool but I would not want that feature years down the line. I have an old S class right now and I’m afraid of touching any of the buttons dealing with the air suspension🙈
you cant compare an s class. Audi a8 are rather good in that department. The raising feature is a 880Nm motor cycloidal drive on each wheel and serves as a sway bar . It aint failing for a long time or ever. Cycloidal drives are crazy reliable. I had old sclass, the air spring design was inferior, large cap at the top would leak. A8 D3 uses 2 simple oring and seal forever. D4 uses a oring and a weirder seal at the top but it`s very strong. Your sclass has the same aircompressor, they require dryer media to be dumped and replaced. If you dont, thats where water gets in the system and cause issues. Its well known on commercial trucks. Get your dryer serviced or replace the compressor entirerely, its only 300$ now
It's nearly as quick as the R8 v10, although has leather seats and other luxuries. Pretty good car.

Yes this handles like a yacht and the fact that it's 1000lbs heavier than the r8, but if you want practical luxury sedan with performance of a supercar, then the S8 is the best.
This blue color totally trashes the whole car. It makes it look like some older a8 (eg. a 2008 model) cheaply custom made with a bad taste.
The wheels look cheap, doesn't look like an Approved Audi option wheel.
Mercedes S Class also looks like a big C Class... I don't like the aesthetics of the BMW G70 but is the only flagship sedan that is totally diferent from the rest of the line.

A8 has way better interior than S-class in my opinion. Sure, there are touchscreens everywhere as well, but they are not overwhelming.

I find that for a lot less money you can get a fully specced G90 with heated/cooled memory rear seats and everything else, with arguably better looks and arguably a nicer interior, especially the upcoming one which looks closer to a Rolls Royce than an Audi A8. I still like Audi's exterior styling despite their lights not being as cool as they used to be, and I'm sure this one is quite fast, but I'm not sure it looks like a 6 digit car.
The S8 reviewed in the video is really poorly equipped with extras, it's nearly empty. If you option this thing up, there will be way more features than what it has in the video, just watch some other videos of fully equipped A8s

Lets keep in mind that the interior design of the audi s8 is from 2018 when this car was officially released, while new S class and BMW 7-series are 2021 and 2022 models. I think the comparison will be fair when Audi release their new A8 vehicle
The a8 wont be renewed. Its dead because they didnt give the right flagship experiences and clients went elsewhere because of that. Aside from the 2004-2010 a8, all the others were inferior in ride softness and interior noise. Yes its a more agile flagship than bmw and merc but they missed the mark since most buyers were in those for the plushyness and comfort. 70db roadnoise at 110kmh is just too much
The S8 is boring, it depends. I like all german brands, but I'd get an Audi over any BMW or Merc, and I owned a car from all three brands. I cant say merc or bmw is ugly, I just dont like it and its the same for others. Thats why we have options. But one thing I have to say, Audi is the brand that will always bring the big tech to the mainstream buyer. In 2017-2018, everyone was hyped about the new screens, virtual cockpit and the tech that Audi has in the lineup. Every car reviewer said "Oh this 7 series/ S class, E class, 5 series, Lexus blah blah is not on the same level with Audi". All brands followed Audi and now they are on top. Now they say that Audi is not on the same level with them because Audi is behind, working on the next big thing. Just remember, your everyday B6 Passat had parallel "self parking" in 2008, a feature you could find only on a flagship car.

@@ccllvn yeah you're right, the EQS has more features for only a couple grand more than an S8, but I think the dash is still a really great design, and even better, you could buy a used 2018 A8 or newer used S8 with the same interior with the same options for way less than MSRP.

Audi's are cool because they're not as smug as Merecedes and not as brash as BMW. This was the prettiest car in this segment and imo it still is. I'd buy an S8 over a "regular" S-Class any day of the week, and those S-Classes are real marvels. Ever simce "Ronnin" dropped the S8 is one of my hero cars, I'm looking at D2 S8's to buy right now.

Before my parents bought a c300 coupe 2017 model we had a basic Audi A3 2017 yes the Mercedes has more leather and alcantara in the interior but the a3 just felt better put together inside and keep in mind the c300 was double the price of the A3 when both were new.. Doug is just plain wrong here

Doug, please stop saying the Haptic Touch can’t be turned off. It is easily turned off in the settings menu under settings > display and brightness > MMI > touchscreen feedback.

Since always.. Look at 80s lambo interiors. look at 60s Cadillac interiors 2000s Bentley interiors. Flashy cars always had flashy interiors. Some people wanted subtle sure but overall it was always as cool as the times/tech allowed them.
you can find a lot more people paying top dollar for flashy things than people paying that kind of money for "subtle".
If you go into a dealership and see an A6 for 65k and A8 for 100k its difficult to justify that massive price difference when they both look exactly the same without any option to change it. Merc has a great interior line up for this now IMO. C class is really cool but kind of small, E class is big but not as interesting. S class is both.

Manufacturers need to stop with all these shiny and glossy surfaces. Aside from being fingerprint and dust magnets, the sun can blind you off many of these surfaces… and I don’t just mean panels but also the chrome accents like the audi logo on the steering wheel gives you a nice sun in your eyes when the sun catches it just right, why not just make these some matte metal

I prefer the A8 dashboard instead of the Mercedes. The Mercedes looks like a cheap dashboard with some classic tablets. Tablets is for Tesla, not for a luxury car.
Audi is pretty much the only german manufacturer who has only good looking cars, the proportions are correct unlike BMW or Merc.
Not having lane keep assist on a luxury car in 2022 is inexcusable. A base model '22 civic has a full driver assist suite that works PERFECTLY, for a car that costs less than 20% what the S8 does

The S8 has lane keep assist. But its rly worse. Thats the standard lane keep assist every Golf gets too. It just bounces you between the two lane marks on the road. VW has a new better system named travel assist which places you in the middle of the road and adjusts the speed automatically. Unfortunately Audi doesnt have this tech yet.
