Doug, the XJ220 was not a supercharged V6. It was a twin turbo V6 and also briefly held the title of the world’s fastest car, until the McLaren F1 came out
A turbocharger is a turbocharger, driven by exhaust gases. A supercharger is belt driven directly by the engine’s crankshaft. The XJ220 used a twin-turbocharger setup, NOT a supercharger as he clearly states. Please don’t overcomplicate what he said or try to justify with a lame explanation. He messed up, and there’s nothing wrong if I pointed it out. What the hell is a turbo-supercharger lol
@@Amy-dq2lg Not correct. turbochargers and superchargers are different forms of forced induction (exhaust driven vs. belt driven). Not interchangeable. Doug makes mistakes - its ok.
Lol a turbo super charger is just the long name for a turbo. They shortened the name to stop confusion between the two different methods of forced induction. Super charger run off belt connected to crank and turbo of exhaust pressure
I remember when I played NFS Hot Pursuit 3 and had this car in the selection. Fond memories kicked in just by seeing this real life counter-part after so many years
Doug, I didn't think you'd find one of these. Such a rare car. I remember my buddies used to think the XJ220 was the ultimate Jaguar of that era. But this was the V12 supercar that car should have been. I would have liked if you had taken it on the freeway or highway but that didn't happen. We at least got to hear it and that was wonderful. I hope you get to try more of these ultra rare true race cars. Like the Nissan cousin that you hinted at. That would be even more epic! (: Glad you experienced it and shared it with us.

If I was doug I’d ban them from my channel because I can’t handle this shit. I would rather watch supercar reviews over some boring normal car videos. One comment alone ruins the experience.
That really is the secret to his success. His insane love and passion for cars is always on full display and let’s those of us who share that love without the funds to experience our dreams experience the next best thing with watching him. He never seems any less wowed to be driving something so special even tho he’s been behind the wheel of almost everything
Oh man! I always loved the XJR-15 since my childhood first experiencing it in NFS 3 and Gran Turismo 2. So puristic and racecar-like. Such a beautiful shape and the MX-6 rear lights look so great on it. N/A V12, lightweight and manual transmission, thats why I love cars of this kind and from the 90s in general. One thing I recognized when you showed the gauges that it has no fuel gauge! So I think one of the warning lights must light up when the fuel tank is empty.
I remember how this thing had a reputation for being a widowmaker in its heyday when it was new. One review (I don't remember by whom and in what magazine) about the XJR-15's road manners: "It's awful. Step on the brake, and the back snaps out. Turn the wheel, and the back snaps out. Fart, and the back snaps out." Now that I'm thinking about it, it might have been Clarkson who wrote that in a test.
Was in Clarksons, Most outrageous video back in 1998 when he produced his yearly Christmas ones. He nearly took out a cameraman it handled so bad round corners
17:15 I really love those 4 switches 😍 I'd love to have this in more (sports) cars. Or to quote James May: "To start you have to go through a starting procedure.... And I LIKE procedures!" 😁 Around 22:45 How would you know, how much fuel is in the car? So many gauges but none for that? 😆
Love when Doug gets this kind of intense energy during the drive test. It takes an impressive vehicle to bring out that the energy, so it doesn’t happen very often. But when it does, it’s such a treat!
I'm sure that's from the rarity and price tag. Really it sounds like some VW bug engines duking it out, and the driving experience doesn't look like much either. He has to have driven many other better rides, but this car is for sale and Doug knows who butters his bread, so he's not gonna dog on this car.
This is my absolute favorite Doug video to date, the most exciting test drive, most interesting piece of history and I’ve never heard of this car before. Really really good.
The Jaguar XJR-15 is a unicorn in the true sense of the word. Its rarity is also mirrored in the videogames it has officially appeared so far, which is only three: Gran Turismo 2, Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit and Forza Horizon 5. Any other game in which has appeared is either a bonus DLC or a mod based on different cars. It's really a shame that this iconic car doesn't get the love it truly deserves from the videogame industry.
The heated windshield actually makes a lot of sense. With the limited internal controls, it would be very easy to fog up the windshield while driving. They probably should have called it windshield defogger.
I was surprised Doug didn't put that together. Lemans is a long race and it rains often (humidity/pressure changes). He may have been trying to connect with your average person's knowledge of current supercars.
Yeah! it's for defogging the windscreen. In 2018 in the Pike's Peak hill climb a Mitsubishi Evo retired from the race right in front of me due to a foggy windscreen!
What a neat car, never have seen one or even heard of one for that matter. Glad that you had the opportunity to review something so unique. Great video as always Mr. Doug!
You know, stupid people who watches normal car videos that Doug does, they always say that “omg I love watching normal car videos over those boring supercars” like wtf man why do people get mad about Doug posting what videos he wants to do? They always steal and copies comments like this. These comments about how much they hate supercars on a normal car videos are super super repetitive and I’ve had enough. Surprised to see that people actually watch his supercar videos hmm
Just a minor correction, the XJ220 was also co-developed with TWR, but with more overseeing from Jaguar and more of a road friendly design. The XJR-15 was more of TWR's idea of what a Jaguar supercar should be. The cars were built around the same time, but with two very different philosophies.
I know that the stats show these aren’t the videos that get the most views, but they’re the only ones I actually watch so I’m grateful he still produces them anyway.
I love your videos, Doug - the in-depth interesting quirks that no one else really does and then the totally honest reaction to the driving experience. None of the predictable for the camera stuff that has become almost a cliche on so many channels. And, boy, was it obvious you were emotionally charged behind the wheel of the XJR-15!
One of the best driving reviews I've seen from Dough, and one of the most excited he seems to be. Definitely makes you feel you could be the one driving.
I remember watching this in an old Jeremy Clarkson VHS called 'The Most Outrageous Jeremy Clarkson Video In The World...Ever!'. He put together all of the 200mph 'hypercars' of the time, including the EB110, F50, F40, Diablo, GT40, XJ220 and the XJR15. It holds a great memory in me of hearing the noise for the first time, it sounded so raw and mechanical.
Darryl! I had that vhs too! I had a Clarkson VHS box set that included that and other specials where he shot at a corvette with a machine gun from a helicopter, and launched a car with a trebuchet. It was fantastic.
10:53 and onwards those are not vents to "help cool the engine", they're to help remove condensation from the rear window panel. A big hot engine directly below the panel with cool outside ambient temperature is prone to create lots of condensation. If the engine heat itself had to be cooled/disipated easily they would just have made large louvres in the window panel itself (like F40)

Doug's attention and description of all details is the best you can get. Every car he reviews it's like he's known them forever. He really does his homework and his ability to convey it all clearly is amazing. Then when he drives the cars he makes you feel the experience.
I beg to differ. He said the XJ220 was supercharged when it was twin turbocharged. I'm a fan of his reviews but he makes a lot of simple mistakes like this. So his homework is the one thing that needs improvement. Also he doesn't understand that no AC fogs up the windscreen, hence the heated windscreen. Not a luxury, a necessity.
take a shot how many times he said "race car" while driving it, i think he was losing a bit 😅 also someone should give Doug chance to review XJ220 S TWR, which is basically combination of XJR-15 and Xj220. Faster sporty version of regular XJ220, that car is nuts.
The Cultivated Collector has got to be the douchiest name you could come up with as a car person. Cant help but think of it every time i see the back of the car.
They did not make 53 XJR-15. They produced 50 total examples, and 2 prototypes. This was confirmed by Peter Stevens. A common misconception, but as far as im aware, the '53' number is inaccurate
Doug you're the best! Everyone else on UA-cam is giving boring reviews of the same vehicles, at the same time. These unusual cars from around the world are great.
Great to see the XJR-15 tested, at last. Did not know they made that many off them - I thought there were like 5-10 made... And I can't remember if I ever heard or read about it's close relationship to the Le Mans-winning car - but It was a long time since this was featured in car magazines, by now. Also - the Cultivated Collector seems to own one of the absolutely most bonkers cars ever made: the Renault 5 Turbo... you know what to do, don't you?
I can't believe you failed to mention that there was an XJR-15 racing series in 1991 as as support event for Formula 1 at the Monaco, Silverstone and Spa races. One of the drivers was Tiff Needell, and other famous drivers too like Derek Warwick and David Brabham.
@@einautofan6685 Except unlike the BMW M1 Procar, with XJR-15 the cars weren't factory-provided but private individuals actually bought those really expensive cars and then hired drivers. I was at one of the races, at Spa. They were all chasing that $1 million prize money and it was the last, deciding race, so they went absolutely balls-out to try to get the win!
As a huge Need for Speed 3 Hot Pursuit fan, any time there's a video like this on the XJR-15 (or any supercar from that era), I'm instantly hooked in, because of the showcase videos in that game, and the mystic surrounding these cars. And you can feel that energy from Doug when he's driving! Also, the XJR-15 was also in Need for Speed 4 High Stakes as a DLC.

Thx Doug for this car. Jay Leno's garage featured one a few years ago. At least Jaguar kept the V12 in this one. Too bad it's priced way out of my league. Interesting car and review.
I'm a car guy and have been my whole life (about the same age as Doug DeMuro), I can't believe this is the 1st time time I'm seeing this car. It's beautiful and timeless, wow. Jaguar has made some beautiful cars, and had it's share of flops (while owned by Ford) this car is gorgeous and holds up to super cars to this day in looks. Amazing. edit: mind is blown that this is 1991! wow... The XJ 220 was the Jag I knew of, was cool, like the Diablo (way cooler) I never knew this other Jag existed, and back then I probably would have thought it looked ridiculous lol.. Seeing it now, it fits right in with 2022 super cars, that is CRAZY for a 30 year old car. Old school Jaguar is bad ass, worthy of Bond movies and OG super car status.
I’m truly amazed you got to experience it in the flesh. Back from when manufacturers were vying for dominance in GT/GT2 and the big show Le Mans . Albeit that car development really pushed boundaries from mid 60’s into the 70’s but the 80’s and 90’s had a real boon in that front. Carbon fiber made drastic and massive impact in what was possible. Glad to see this and hopefully you’d get a chance of some more rare exotic’s of yesteryear .
Gotta love TWR. He transformed Jaguar back in the days to include the XJR-15 and the very rare XJR-15 LM (only 5 produced with a LeMans 7.4ltr NA V12 producing 750hp).
I was at Le Mans when the TWR Jaguars won. I think it was 1988. 3 came across the finish line together although their positions were 1, 2 and 5. Never felt so proud to be British. You could virtually camp anywhere in those days and we pitched our tent right by the chicane before the final finish line straight. It was so noisy we never got any sleep 😂
I've always loved the XJR 15! It really doesn't get the praise it deserves. I can't believe you got your hands on this one Doug! I haven't watched the entire vid yet, but I do know TWR also made a limited run of 6 XJR LMs which had more powerful engines that were only build for a few thousand miles or something, even more rare! 9:50 Another thing is that TWR also made tuning parts and body kits for Mazda vehicles, another brand he was actually pretty close to.
Big Jag fan and never really registered this vs XJ220 etc. Really interesting car, another one for my lottery win Jag list! Thanks for the in depth review and really appreciate the converted weight/torque details for us UK lot!
Great to see a feature on this one! I only have one remark - the styling wasn´t at all out of place or weird in 1991, it was rather exactly on par with the trends. I was 18 back then and I been a car nerd since birth. All cars I drew myself in 1991 looked like this! Also - swoopy aero-designs like this had been shown on concept cars all through the 80ies, with an increase after 1985 and a climax during the early 90ies - cars like GM´s Buick Wildcat, Corvette Indy and Pontiac Banshee, the Peugeot Proxima, loads of Japanese ones, like the Subaru SOL 21C, the Mitsubishi HSR, the Nissan ARC-X, the Toyota AXV II, etc - even the old Italian design houses Bertone, Pininfarina, Fioravanti, Italdesign and Zagato produced a lot of soft aerodynamic shapes during this time.
Not sure if you are from the US or not, but over here we had a variant of the Mitsubishi 3000 GT called the Dodge Stealth. It had been around since 1990. At first glace of this Jag, it definitely invokes images of that Stealth in its RT/TT trim.
@@spazzman90 I´m from Sweden, where only the 3000GT was sold (in very low numbers), but of course I knew about the Dodge Stealth as well, even back then - and yes, there are some resemblance.
Not only did the Nissan R390GT share the same body with the XJR-15, the 390 also narrowed headlights from the Nissan 300ZX and borrowed taillights from a Fiat. After reading about what Doug mentioned about the 390 I had to look it up. Amazing what you learn about these awesome vehicles.

I wish Jaguar would return to their days of building crazy Ferrari-rivaling supercars. It's a shame that a brand with so much performance DNA is stuck with making run-of-the-mill SUVs 😔.
I think it's arguable the Project 8, and better yet the Project 7, are more fitting to the brand than any of the race car inspired stuff... They're proper Jaaaaaags. In the real world, with real roads, the XJR-15 wouldn't see which way the Project 7 went. Same goes for most of the Ferrari range, in the real world the big Jags would just walk away. Jags should be built to use on Bri-ish roads and only Lotus does it better than Jaguar.
@Old Fart Yeah that's a good point... The XJ would have been a prime candidate for electrification. Big, stylish, electric limos would actually suit the whole ethos of the XJ like a well made suit. That was a mistake from J/LR to drop the platform. It would slotted in nicely underneath the Rolls Royce and Bentley EV offerings just around the corner.
@@johnlukach4091 You do know that there's been a global parts/supply problem since 2020, which most brands are currently struggling with. I've also probably seen more Jags on the road in the last couple of years than I have for a long time.

The driving segment of this video was amazing. Love seeing Doug so fired up behind the wheel.
Doug, the XJ220 was not a supercharged V6. It was a twin turbo V6 and also briefly held the title of the world’s fastest car, until the McLaren F1 came out
Turbocharger is actually short for turbo-supercharger, so Doug is technically correct.
Amy please uninstall the internet and delete your computer.
Lol a turbo super charger is just the long name for a turbo. They shortened the name to stop confusion between the two different methods of forced induction. Super charger run off belt connected to crank and turbo of exhaust pressure

I usually hate these exotics videos but the sounds from this car during the driving experience are exceptional.
I remember how this thing had a reputation for being a widowmaker in its heyday when it was new. One review (I don't remember by whom and in what magazine) about the XJR-15's road manners: "It's awful. Step on the brake, and the back snaps out. Turn the wheel, and the back snaps out. Fart, and the back snaps out."
Now that I'm thinking about it, it might have been Clarkson who wrote that in a test.
Def sounds like Clarkson lol
Was in Clarksons, Most outrageous video back in 1998 when he produced his yearly Christmas ones. He nearly took out a cameraman it handled so bad round corners
That's supposedly a myth.

Yeah I agree. Would rather watch these supercar reviews over some boring normal cars I don’t care about
The Jaguar XJR-15 is a unicorn in the true sense of the word.
Tom Walkinshaw really was a huge part of australian racing, also founded Walkinshaw performance, some of the most awesome holdens came from these guys
Just a minor correction, the XJ220 was also co-developed with TWR, but with more overseeing from Jaguar and more of a road friendly design. The XJR-15 was more of TWR's idea of what a Jaguar supercar should be. The cars were built around the same time, but with two very different philosophies.
Another minor correction I can't believe people haven't crucified him for is the XJ220 was a twin turbo V6, not supercharged.
I know that the stats show these aren’t the videos that get the most views, but they’re the only ones I actually watch so I’m grateful he still produces them anyway.
What videos are getting the numbers then?
Who doesn't want to know about the quirks and features of little known supercars?
I looked at his video list sorted by views, and nearly all of his top videos are weird or hypercars ( I looked through the first 30 or so)
I love your videos, Doug - the in-depth interesting quirks that no one else really does and then the totally honest reaction to the driving experience.

@@memitchell1 - I had that box set too! Great entertainment.
I had that too and seem to remember Clarkson complaining that it was too loud and would spin it’s wheels under acceleration.
What about the McLaren F1? Fastest car here by far.
@@sukhdevr3489 - I must have missed that bit. At what point was the F1 featured in the video?
10:53 and onwards those are not vents to "help cool the engine", they're to help remove condensation from the rear window panel. A big hot engine directly below the panel with cool outside ambient temperature is prone to create lots of condensation. If the engine heat itself had to be cooled/disipated easily they would just have made large louvres in the window panel itself (like F40)

This video is a little over a day old when I write this. 300k views is still a lot, but for Doug I feel like this deserves more. Great review of a car I didn't know existed. The enthusiasm Doug portrays towards the vision and purpose of this car is incredible.
Not a luxury, a necessity.
take a shot how many times he said "race car" while driving it, i think he was losing a bit 😅
also someone should give Doug chance to review XJ220 S TWR, which is basically combination of XJR-15 and Xj220. Faster sporty version of regular XJ220, that car is nuts.
Or every time he mispronounces “JAGUAR”

A true 'wtf' exotic from my teenage years, and a real hardcore racer made road-legal. So special!
They did not make 53 XJR-15. They produced 50 total examples, and 2 prototypes. This was confirmed by Peter Stevens. A common misconception, but as far as im aware, the '53' number is inaccurate
Man I remember reading about this machine in Road & Track and Sports Car International as a kid. Love this era of supercars.
As much as I drool over the XJR15, if he doesn't do a video on the R5 I'm going to be mega butthurt.
Priceless to see doug almost lose his mind driving this beast.
I am proud of you Doug. Your channel has grown so much. For the better. Congratulations man.
I can't believe you failed to mention that there was an XJR-15 racing series in 1991 as as support event for Formula 1 at the Monaco, Silverstone and Spa races. One of the drivers was Tiff Needell, and other famous drivers too like Derek Warwick and David Brabham.
I dont think i heard him mention that, or the fact that this was the world's first road car constructed entirely out of carbon fiber.
Why can't you believe that oversight? Doug famously knows f*ck all about racing / racing history.
It was kind of a XJR-15 Cup for rich driver's! Similar to the BMW M1 races in the early 80's before...😉
@@einautofan6685 Except unlike the BMW M1 Procar, with XJR-15 the cars weren't factory-provided but private individuals actually bought those really expensive cars and then hired drivers.

Rarer, V12 vs. V6, and way, WAY better looking than the XJ220.
I love Jaguar but they've been dead since 19/20.
@@johnlukach4091 You do know that there's been a global parts/supply problem since 2020, which most brands are currently struggling with. I've also probably seen more Jags on the road in the last couple of years than I have for a long time.
