ABUSE in the Mormon Church
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 жов 2024
- Russell M. Nelson said a year ago that the church does not tolerate abuse. However the string of abuse cases over the past year and beyond linked to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints seem to indicate a problem with abuse within church.

Oftentimes, The secondary insult of not being believed or protected is psychologically worse than the abuse itself. And then add the religious beliefs, culture, identity, and hope being dashed…it’s abuse on top of abuse on top of abuse.

I absolutely agree -- and it's very often overlooked -- or even "shunned" to acknowledge ... people are both afraid and unwilling to know the truth -- because then they would be forced to respond to it -- ignore it (lie to themselves and compromise their self-integrity), or act on it with integrity (dangerous to their status quo ... ).
I can verify that personally.💔
Tell bishops to call the cops instead of your risk management lawyers. That might be a good start. I now judge the church by actions, not by "prophetic" statements.
tell the spouse to call the cops -- who the hell needs a fake bishop?
@@sagesaith6354you're absolutely right. She is also guilty since she knew about it and said nothing. How could she allow this abuse to also happen to her six week old infant?
@@sagesaith6354 Anybody who knows what's going on has a moral responsibility to report it to secular authorities. There's no excuse not to.
I was a bishop and had a minor issue that I called the bishop's hotline for and was stunned that I reached the KM law office. That fact cemented in my mind and heart forever that the church's priority is to protect itself and its leaders and not the children or others who are victims of abuse. Absolutely disgusting!
Good for you for using your brain and not falling into line with those ahead of you

@@paulgregersen3570 and thats how they get away with it
@@paulgregersen3570I’m not a bishop but I have witnessed the bishop and stake president protect a perpetrator after he confessed and the church even sent in its top Barristers to protect the church name. Didn’t give a flying Fxck about the innocent victim all they cared about was the themselves and the priesthood holder.
Prez Nelson is full of it. I live in Salt Lake City. I've seen the statistics, have worked with abuse victims. I lost a job over reporting--or trying to--abuse, as a teacher. I reported in the 1st 2 weeks of the school year. The principal got the case closed. I re-opened that case all year long several times. In the end, they had someone pose as an "ombudsman" who promptly stole all of my 9 months' of documentation. That principal was promoted. This was in Orem, Utah, which I believe is ground zero for CSA in the US. Love your stuff, Nemo. Thanks for all the truth. I've been waiting for the "Boston Globe" moment for a long time here in Utah. It's all about the Mo church's stash of 1000's of acres of land and $350 billion that's not being used for charity. You should see how many homeless there are in SLC. HERE THEY VALUE CHILDREN AS FUTURE TITHE PAYERS.
That is totally disgusting …I have zero respect for the fraudsters running Mormon Inc. 🤢.
Why did you wait for permission to report abuse rather than immediately reporting it to law enforcement yourself ?
it annoys me that nelson and his mates will pontificate over their status and pay no heed to the homeless and poor LDS suffering on struggle street
Fear of loosing church’s money is greater than protecting children FULL STOP PERIOD.
They've got a ton of money. Just plain evil.. period. Satan's church.
Do you think this could affect the ability of The Church Formerly Known as Mormon to attract new members, and/or retain existing members?
@@flyingspirit3549 Yes.
@@flyingspirit3549 you are right. The internet has been the death blow to the churches continued growth. This has to hurt it more.
But they don't hesitate to pay settlement after settlement, so long as the victim signs an NDA. I think they care more about power and prestige than money, because with power and prestige, more money will always be flowing in.
The Church has told me, again and again, that, as a victim of abuse, I need to repent. I never understood that reasoning.
You don't repent from this false church.
This church is not God's church.
That's so stupid...I am glad that a left de church after 33 years.
I think to I would be quite angry if I ever had a Bishop tell me that.
Jeremy Runnels was told to repent from the truth.
To bare false witness is evil no matter what religion you are. The Church does not preach abuse or repentance of the abused.
They absolutely do tolerate abuse. I am a witness! They are are cruel, heartless, and vindictive to those that report abuse. I had my recommend suspended and a no trespass order issued for writing Pearson and other GAs when my local leaders ignored my reports of abuse. It's disgusting they involved Church legal when I, AS A VICTIM OF ABUSE, reported it.
I grew up in Cochise (koh-CHEEZ) County and I cannot express how horrifying the Arizona case is for me. I know some of the men that were on the council which excommunicated him . . . It's dumbfounding. It's an utter atrocity that so many knew and did NOTHING
I grew up in Cochise County as well and it was recently that I heard about this case...my heart is sick...
Well you know. I can imagine the conundrum in regards to protecting female children and protecting the priesthood. Boy, that's a tough one. Grrr
I'm also from Cochise, and just learned about this horrific situation. They are choosing to protect their image/perpetrators over victims!
I almost took a job (in the medical sector) in Sierra Vista, more than 30 years ago.
It just had too much of a "military feel, to it", when I went to scout things out.
So, I declined the offer.
I ended up in Phoenix: which is more cosmopolitan...
Question: is the Church more militarized, in a military base environment? Just wondering.
@@ahashdahnagila6884 I lived in Sierra Vista a few years ago and that wasn't my impression...but then again, I was a die hard church member...I'd have to go back and see with new eyes.
They do tolerate abuse. My sister was horrifically abused for 24 years her temple worthy husband, _aped and attempted murder so grievously it took two surgeons to repair multiple lacerations in multiple areas. Her bishop, stake president, and RS sisters convinced her a wife can not deny her husband. Even if they are immobilized from the armpits down due to multiple sclerosis. Oh yeah, when you live in small, small town AZ in a mostly mormon community yes they do look the other way for abuse of any kind.
I'm so sorry and angry that happened to your sister! I'm thankful she has you.

Hope she is free now. Heartbreaking
@@psychic_cat_studio I hope she found peace. Truly that is all the world needs. Be at peace within your self, then you do not feel the need to control others
I am so sorry that happened to your sister. The level of S abuse perpetrated by males in high demand religious communities is disgusting. They are so sheltered and excused by other male members in their community.
My husband was ex'd for abusing me and our children. They then disfellowshipped me for not being a good wife, because, if I had been a good wife, he would not have abused us.
You had some pretty crappy leaders because that is not something I have heard of before but then I live in a really good area. I am so sorry for you horrific experience. They should have face church court and forced to go to counseling to learn about abuse.
I am so sorry. This is PART of what’s wrong with the LDS church.
Hopefully you left the Mormon Cult Church.
Sounds familiar. My faithful TBM grandmother left her abusive predator husband (who regularly broke myriad LDS rules). Her church authorities weren't at all concerned about her husband's transgressions and counseled her to remain with him for years. When she finally left, it was she who was criticized and treated poorly for leaving a sick and twisted man (imagine the stigma of 1950s divorcee in Utah). My grandfather's abuse was so severe it caused his daughter to develop alternate personalities, and grow up to sexually abuse me. @icecreamladydriver1606 I wonder if you experienced 'good leaders' because you fit into the tiny box of acceptable female obedience. This crappy leader thing has been going on for generations, and I can say that as a descendant of Nauvoo residents and UK LDS convert pioneers.

The VAST majority of members don't want to know what the questions are either.
Church doctrine for repentance is to stop sinning, confess, and make a full restitution for our sins as much as possible. That means if you have broken the laws of the land you go to jail as part of your repentance process!!! Why shouldn't we make them answer NOW? Why should victims have to wait til they die for protection and justice? The members outnumber leadership. I don't want to have to explain to Christ why I did nothing while expecting him to sort it out.
Think about it this way. If the church is not true, and there is no afterlife, then these leaders will never be brought to justice. Now is the time to get this done. Mormonthink just postpones everything so that it never gets done.

Interesting to listen to Russell M. Nelson’s condemnation of “abuse”. I happened to come across a Yelp review he wrote in 2019 (under his nickname “Rusty”) giving glowing praise to the Church’s go-to law firm to assist the Mormon Church in weaseling out of it’s ethical responsibilities.
-“Rusty” Nelson’s 2019 YELP Review of Kirton McConkie-
“Just speaking as a man but these guys are great! Have helped my institution handle many sensitive items over the years. Back in 2012 this guy wanted $8.3M for pain and suffering from an ongoing abuse allegation and Kirton McConkie tried to clear it all up for just $10K. They are very professional and generally great at keeping secrets and pharmaceutical studies. I recommend them for all our political actions. These guys are a Godsend.”
This is beyond nauseating, but not surprising.

I went back to Church after being inactive and told the bishop of the ward a bit about my background. Including that I've been reported several times to DCFS, lost custody of my kids and have abuse allegations against me that were uphelp by DCFS (very nasty divorce in which he got custody after his smear campaign)... and then I was called to the Nursery, the Secretary of the Primary, and several other callings I didn't take because I wasn't comfortable serving those callings knowing what I looked like on paper... the Nursery took lots of convincing from the Bishop and then the Secretary was a new bishop (who again I had told about my background). Even doing my callings I was on high alert, and constantly stressed about ensuring I was a safe adult, the way I saw it, if someone else did something they'd look at the person with the history of child abuse first.. Still to this day I can't understand WTF they were thinking.. but it was when I served on the Relief Society activity that I really saw how they called people. I was tasked with going home and praying and bringing back a list of people to call as my helpers and my suggestions were totally dismissed. Anyway. I'm out now. and feel so much less stress- I've also been able to remove the allegations from my record, but none of that was accomplished with help from the church. They were the opposite of helpful in so many aspects of my life... on top of all this I also experienced abuse from my parents growing up, and had conflicting messages with Honor Your Parents and being sent to the parents I chose in the pre-existence, probably how DCFS was so easily convinced I was a danger to my kids.. but the church wasn't helpful then, and they aren't helpful now. for me anyway. thanks for all you do Nemo! I have learned so much from you. I've been researching my family history in the early church and have found that many of my ancestors are from England- Birmingham, Lancashire, Gloucester and have enjoyed your perspectives. Do you have any early church members in your family who stayed in England? I'd really like to hear more about the early church in England for those who didn't join the saints.
" ... I'm out now. and feel so much less stress ... " Hmmmm -- seems I've heard that before -- a LOT!!! So glad you're out and healing -- praying for you. 🙂
Well done Nemo and Colby!
Beginning with the Salamander's first visit, the abuse of women and children has been an accepted policy of this cult and a practice at every level of membership. My first personal observation occurred in Hemet, CA in the seventies when the Church stood by an accused senior citizen High Priest that denied the accusation against him. The story made the Riverside, CA Press-Enterprise and the man was brought to trial. I was too young and naive to follow up and never saw another story about the incident in the newspaper, as child abuse was not given much publicity in those days. For me, this was only the beginning of the tragic topic and a lifetime of observing the Church's tolerance of abuse. Just another brick that built my bridge out decades ago.
so glad you're out !
This was a great episode. Thank you so much!

These cases, the large historic BSA abuse case, the financial secrets etc are resulting in people leaving the Church in droves globally. At what point does the FP and Q12 stop allowing the tail to wag the dog?!
NEMO: Church leaders are not BARRED from telling authorities about abuse....they are not LEGALLY REQUIRED to report....but the law does not BAR them from reporting. Bishops have every moral IMPERATIVE to report. They just don't out of fear or that the help line tells them not to report.

THANK you for getting RIGHT to the point Nemo... Keep exposing these pdos
As in the words of Elder Uchtdorf, the church needs to 'turn the do it dials from later to now' in reporting the abuse.
@Nemo So there is a question about church doctrine and church policy - In the leadership guidebook - on confession, It stated in the (Past) that the church will not report anything out even for murder but the bishop if told should instruct the person to confess to the law, unless it is required by law to report whatever has been confessed to IT WILL NOT be reported. essentially this was the leadership guide before it got updated that was given to bishops, and thier councilors. (Note I am talking based on =-10 year ago when I was assistant ward clerk and had access to the handbooks.)
3 of my girls were abused by a 1st counselor. I went to his bishop, my bishop and both stake presidents. I was called a woman scorn because I am a widow. Told to stop talking about it to anyone . They took my temple recommend. He stayed in his position. I finally went to the police. And that resolved it. Years later his bishop called me and apologized for not believing and supporting me. The church does not support the victims.
He's not talking about actual abuse with actual victims and actual perpetrators. He's talking about abuse in a larger, vague sense. You know, the kind to which you pay lip service.
oh yeah -- along with that vague sense that the "church is true" etc. etc.
What? The church is true too? Now that is confusing. I had just convinced myself that the church is not true. Well, I'm gonna have to talk to my bishop about that.
I recall the BritVengers episodes and the action taken to force even the most basic DBS checks on LDS in UK.
JWs also work to defend clergy penitent rights. (Was it Washington state trying to remove it??)
50 min in - Absolutely!! The positive PR from good protective policies would do them so much good. But suspect they are scared how much woodworm will surface when they lift the carpet - and the cost of that. But facing up to it is so crucial. My denomination had a number of cases go to court after opening a past cases review (about a decade ago) and facing when things were handled poorly in previous 50 years. It can be done. And strict safeguarding policies.
Yes, abuse happens in all communities and contexts, but a culture of loyalty, trust, and silence invites predators. Whether the IFB documentary Let us Prey, LDS, JWs (who keep internal lists of cases reported to them), Catholics (though I think they have cleaned up since the big scandals) - faith communities have a whole extra level of potential manipulation that voluntary groups and Sports leagues etc have. And those faith communities that make sex a dirty word and keep information from developing teens, also add shaming the victim or not having the space to say exactly what was happening to them. Especially in past decades pre internet etc
When the Arizona senate tried to ammend its clergy penitent privilege law in response to this case the Mormon Church, JW's and Catholics worked together to defeat the effort to ammend it! And the President of the Arizona senate who led that effort was Mormon.

Certainly the Catholic Church has long enjoyed their legal right to the sanctity of confession, but the doctrine around confession is different than Mormon doctrine if you ask me.
Your first concern is dial 911. Ftds
this is appalling
I know Catholic teaching for centuries has been the seal of the confessional (but even with that tie it is possible with hold absolution until the penitent confesses to authorities).
But is there a prescribed doctrine in LDS that states that conversations with bishops are sealed? Do bishops keep everything they are told in these meetings confidential? If not then surely not apply.
If called the hotline then bishop has already broken confidentiality - so surely clergy penitent clause should not apply if the clergy person has already spoken about the matter outside that room and that time.
To my knowledge, it has never been called confession until protection from the law for it was needed. Calling it confession brought up comparisons to the Catholic church, so the term was avoided.
There's no sealed confession.
They are called 'bishop's interviews.'
Not confessions.
In fact, members think that abuse is reported to the police!
I had an argument with my uncle, telling him the hotline goes to their attorneys, not the police.
He got mad and said, 'It goes to the police! We've always called the police for child abuse at our church!'
The handbook even says they call police.
He grew up in the church, so did his parents. So they hide the attorney hotline from members.
I'm dying to send him this news report with the church rejoicing about not having to help these 2 girls, and they don't have to give them the evidence the church has against their father.

On the part of these LDS lawyers it is very dishonest, ok they took advantage of the law but for the church that is contradicting the holy speech of the prophet.
what head?
Abuse isn’t tolerated; it’s blamed on the victim! Or it’s covered up…
A couple of things come to mind:
If their concern is repentance then it seems like they don't have a very good grasp of what that means.
Sure, I'm speaking in hindsight but it seems fair to say that a church that claims revelation should know that repentance should include secular punishment. That would mean the bishop telling the abuser flat out that if he/she doesn't turn him/herself in then they will be turned in.
Also, they should know that repentance should involve separating the abuser from the victim and certainly not allowing the abuser to continue in a situation in which he/she obviously experiences some temptation to abuse.
12.14.23. Partially watched several times & last time, my comment was sliced. But, again, wouldn't our loving one another another as JESUS loved us - and so commanded us - mean that OUR ACCOUNTABILITY TO HIM makes us accountable to one another? This business is hellish ghastly. And this business FALLS ON THE TOWER OF BABEL IN S.L.C.
Its so gut wrenching the harm we do to each other on this earth. It is difficult to overcome so much. I feel as if I could bleed from every pore how lost we can get and how evil be can be, and the laws of the land should be exercised in these cases to hold accountability. Nevertheless, the one who overcame the world (Christ) commanded us to forgive ourselves and to forgive others. "He proclaimed, forgive them for they know not what they do". We are all lost and are lacking in many ways don't realize we are lost. As the consequences to the abuser are carried out we still must forgive. If we don't do it, we choose to become judges demanding that vengeance and harm be done to the person who is the abuser. In so doing, we become like the abusers, (abusers to the abusers), justifying our demands that the abuser be tortured equal to the abuse of the victims suffering. The darkness can move through us to act and retaliate and to continue doing more harm. I choose love and forgiveness as I trust we all need help to change. Love is eternal life and it brings forth more life. It is good fruit and it is forever. What do you want to create and where will you choose to dwell?
Is he grieving while ignoring the issue? I reported my child abuse to the church multiple times as a kid, only to be told that my mom would stop hurting me if I was a better kid.
It's rubbish. The church will protect its reputation first above everything else
“They’re only after money.” I can’t think of a more disturbingly ironic comment. This from a TBM who belongs to a church with wealth in the hundreds of billions which demands money from the old, the destitute, and young families struggling to make ends meet. As Peter Bleakley so often laments: you couldn’t make this up.
You absolutely couldn’t!
😳 Robyn Delgado's comments 😳
🤢🤮 So vile and disgusting what happened 💔
Not only is abuse tolerate it is sanctioned by the false mormon apostles.
If you cheat on your spouse you will get ex-communicated but if you molest little kids you keep your membership? How does this not even go to council
Thank you both for this episode & ongoing work and activism to protect children & vulnerable adults from abuse of all kinds. This is a difficult topic. As adults we need to face it and work for positive change & real safeguarding both internally & in the public policy & law realm.
At ~17 min Kolby is discussing the false advice from K&M lawyers to the bishop about mandatory reporting and him not reporting. Kolby, could a bar complaint be filed against the lawyers who failed to properly inform the bishop - who as I understand was also a physician, another mandatory reporter? If so can you or others do so? There needs to be some accountability somewhere. How the K&M lawyers sleep at night & keep their recommends - honest in their dealings standard & all that - I don't know. Money & power & extreme ideologies corrupt & blind otherwise good people. High demand religions are particularly adept at that, despite all the moralizing.
Also, isn't the K&M lawyer practicing law in AZ without a proper license?
@@JC-vq2cs Your instincts are good on this. I cannot answer whether a bar complaint been filed against Mr. Nelson, but it would seem one is certainly worth putting in front of the AZ Bar association. All lawyers have a minimum duty of competence, which would seem to be violated by providing that a statute provides the exact opposite of what it says.
What adds to the hurt is the abuser can “repent” and be rebaptized as if it never happened.
I believe in repentance and forgiving, but when it comes to abuse or all serious crime, you dont forget. You dont put a known pedophile, even if repented, anywhere near the primary or youth program. You have them print sacrament programs, or be secretary in Elders quorum. I know one guy that went to federal prison for being involved in a plot to kill a judge. He is now in a branch pesidency over the primary.
