I'm so glad to finally see I'm not alone here anymore. I just don't have time for these 100 hour experiences anymore; I'd rather play a 1 hour game that's still engaging 100 times. I always 😬 when someone starts measuring a games worth in hours alone
I noticed you mention replay value a few times over the video, and that got me thinking. This year was the first year I started really going for these types of shorter, more impactful games, which I noticed I got a lot more out of. At the same time, I was noticing how my favorite games usually have the least replay value - I found out that above all else, I value surprise and novelty in games more than anything. Some games I played this year that I believe fit into this would be Undertale, Deltarune, Yume Nikki, Doki Doki Literature Club, and especially Outer Wilds. Replaying these games don’t even give me half the feelings they did the first time around, so for the latest few of those I played, I simply haven’t gone back and have a much better memory of what it was. As for the video, my new attitude has also made me notice that I’ve fallen out of love with super long sandbox open world games completely. I used to be addicted to Minecraft and Fortnite, and now mostly only play if friends invite me. I’m playing Pokémon Emerald right now, and its 30 hour play time is really dissuading me from finishing it (but it’s tied to a surprise for a friend so I just have to push through). I’m trying to make stuff more than consume stuff, and it’s a great new experience - and I’ve noticed that it comes full circle, as my core game design philosophy is respecting the player’s time. That edge joke was great. Glad I subscribed.
It’s funny you mention Undertale et. al. One of the videos I was thinking about involves first playthroughs and how I didn’t replay Undertale for years because it kinda changed the way I think about choice in games. Thanks for the well written comment, and appreciate you watching!
If you're into short games I recommend Before your eyes, the story is great and the concept of time passes when you blink irl is different, but a cool different
This video was fantastic from pacing and all the good points you brought up. And since you said you wanted more of bright memory infinite, i’d say ULTRAKILL can quince your thirst. The amount of crazy shit you can do in that game is amazing. I also liked how you bring out short games that could’ve been longer, and the fluff of long games. This was a great video, your best one by far.
Oh yeah! Completely forgot about ULTRAKILL. Still need to play it. And I agree. This is definitely the best video I’ve made, problem is that I might not top it for awhile I think LOL.
Congrats on the sponsor man! That's so sick the Voidigo team reached out. And great video too, editing was smooth and the writing from point to point was solid. The last year or so I've found myself with less and less time and not being able to play these 100+ hour RPGS that keep coming out. So I've been delving into short but depth-filled indie games as well. And man, there is some real SSS tier experiences to be had in 5 hours or less. Inscryption, Katana Zero, Milk outside a bag of milk, Everhood, just to name a few. I'm not sure if it's a state of the industry thing, a "I'm getting older" thing, or just my mood recently. But shorter, tight knit, experiences are becoming much more enjoyable to me then ones I have to spend weeks to months on. It's kind of wild that my top ten consists of games that are 50 hours long to games that are shorter than some movies. I love video games with my whole heart, but I'm slowly wanting to experience more of what life has to offer, just like you mentioned at the end. So I'm thankful for the growing indie scene and dev's scaling back for shorter, but still profound experience. Fantastic work once again man!
Oh trust me I couldn't believe it when I saw the e-mail from them. Currently just hoping I get them their money's worth lol. I feel like the culture has definitely shifted in the last 10 years. Early 2010's I feel like most people would look at A Short Hike and think "What a scam!" But now you have so many short games that blow up. Stray, Little Miss Fortune, Unpacking, etc. I think we're at a point where people simply care about the quality of a game regardless of potential playtime, and it's awesome to see.
Thinking about it a bit, that might be because of the massive shift we've seen to indie games, no? Like, nowadays, most games out there are made by indie devs who don't have the time or resources to make a huge game like a AAA studio could. Obviously there's a lot more that goes into it, but I feel like the indie scene is a pretty big part of it@@sl1ppey
This absolutely resonates. And is part of why I started my own channel. At this age, with a job and a family and so many other responsibilities I simply can not justify picking up an 80 hour Odyssey of a game anymore. I want shorter games. Games that respect my time and make every moment worth it. And I imagine theres a lot of people out there who feel the same. Keep em coming.
Couldn't have said it better myself. One other way that I like to consider it from: there are so many great (and bad) games out there, and being able to play a half a dozen in the time you'd "finish" a live service game or an AAA blockbuster feels like a more enjoyable way to spend my time, and it's less a mental barrier to pick up a shorter game over something that I know will take a long while. Also tends to cost less over time smile
Haven't had a video resonate with me like this in SO LONG. I'm so over 100 hr RPGs and I'm entering my like "if it's over 15 hours I'm probably not gonna lay it" ohase
Great stuff, dude. I tend to prefer shorter things just bc of how, like you said, if something's short, you can't throw in a bunch of fluff and garbage. I made a video called "Games Are Too Long" back in, like, June, and I felt a lot of the same things you brought up, so I'm glad that I'm not the only one who's not really into super long games at this point. And I dig the point you made about how much you noticed you did in a single day; that's always a cool feeling. Recently, I started keeping track of any bigger things I do (concerts, hang with friends, anytime I do something unusual) and it's made me realize how much wild stuff happens if you keep your eyes peeled. Great video, man, I dig it
Love the quote from the intro, that the high quality and short game is a respect of time. Im a little younger then you, but i feel the same, short indie games ftw
Great video that I agree with 100%. Usually for me after playing a big 60 hour game (Like Starfield) I'm just exhausted from it and have a much higher desire to play shorter games. Roguetypes are always good in that regard, but I've seen more people talking about 'A Short Hike' in the last few weeks and makes me want to try. What if in an alternate timeline, the laws made companies to always make games 20-minutes long to beat? Including Pokemon. Imagine growing up in that parallel universe with altered memories, POVs, and experiences. And how well would players have been healthwise?
I think rogue games would thrive in this parallel universe lol. I'm not sure. I think games would almost be treated like TV shows, where different snippets of said games would be released on schedules. Almost like tuning in to your weekly saturday morning cartoons, but interactive. From a child's perspective, that sounds cool as hell to me.
I tend to struggle to get through longer games. The one exception to the rule for me is monster hunter. These games are an absolute time sink but I always come back to it. I think the progression system is what does it for me. Going on a hunt is like joining a quick match in multiplayer and they usually don’t last that long but every hunt contributes to your next goal which is usually just better gear. Even after a month long break I have no problem jumping back in. Also what is this blackmagic 7:07
Dude I was wondering when someone would comment on that clip. It’s still the absolute stupidest interaction I’ve ever experienced in a Souls game (also, as soon as the riposte animation finished I immediately got hit by another arrow and died :D )
@@sl1ppey Yeah i have been wondering the same thing cause in all of my time playing these games i have never seen that happen. DS1 is build different.
you can read a hundred page book or a thousand page book. the experience expressed is yours. Whether it is good or bad that is better or worse is entirely arbitrary. You set a destination because the journey there is the point of the living.
Dude Outer Wilds is one of my favorite games and I hate it for that because it's a game you only get to play for the first time once. I want to make a video about it, but it's been talked about to death and I have no idea how I could put a creative spin on it.
This video basically explains myself lol. Im 30 and sick of open world games. Recently finished Gris, and evil west which was decent length. Games like that ive had more satisfaction than say ff7 rebirth where i felt burn out, endless filler etc. Time truly is precious in gaming.
I think its very funny that a short hike comes up in EVERY "value of short video games" video (among the ones I've seen at least I guess). on the topic of short games that should've been longer, I heard this about "En Garde!" possibly worth checking out i had the exact same character arc you described in the beginning and have now adopted a new ethos. i only have space for ONE long game and ONE roguetype (as per your definition) in my life at a time. I have been slowly chipping my way at elden ring since the game's release and have also been grinding spelunky 2 gradually since its release on switch (I'm close to completion on both, about 150 and 300 hours respectively). Other things come up in between but they cant be huge timesinks like either of them, so I mostly play short games in addition. It has been a system that has worked nicely for me. on that note, you should play TOEM. fun video
I think it just goes to show how effective A Short Hike is at making people think about the topic of short games in general lol. A person in my discord recc'd TOEM as well and I've had it wishlisted since then (I have SO MANY GODDAMN WISHLISTED GAMES NOW). Gonna be keeping an eye on the steam autumn sale this year for sure.
i used to rely on the whole $1/hour thing, but then I played A Short Hike, which took me only an hour to beat, and realized how flawed that metric was it really does feel like a lot of games these days exist solely to waste your time, which is why short games work excellently at making you feel like your time was well spent have you checked out lil gator game? it reminds me a lot of a short hike and it borrows a lot of the fun stuff from breath of the wild like paragliding
I think it's true to lots of types of media, movies, series, books, and, i think especially songs Last warning! Further lies tons of rambling! Good example of this can be band King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Band with 25 albums and about a dozen of live recordings, lots of times, they tend to write longer songs, and yeah, lots of times the song itself benefits from it, Crumbling Castle, Dragon, The River, Ice V, Change. Are all about 10 minutes long and all are bangers, but... If here their length feels natural, like it was intended to be like this, lots of other songs feel like they artificially prolongate them, best example, i would say is The Dripping Tap - it's 18:18, and lots of moments it feels exhausting, i get it, you played this riff almost 20 times already, move on! And then there are shorter ones in comparison. Slow Jam 1, Time = $$$, Organ Farmer, they all are about 2 minutes long each, bitesize songs that don't feel like need to be longer, they feel like this length suits them, just like those i named first... But on the other hand we have Cranes, Planes , Migraines which is 1:16, and it's a transition track, but you hear it's potential, but then it goes to next song, and i should clarify, that King Gizzard do seamless transitions flawlessly, and case with Cranes, Planes, Migraines is the same, previous song leads in this one, which leads to the next, perfection, but it still feels like there can be more in here... I dunno what my point here is, i just like talking about King Gizz
I think it all boils down to entertainment: effort comparison. Games like witcher 3, red dead redemption, persona 5 royal etc. require you to hold the entire worldpoint while playing them. Slay the spire, Stacklands do not. Yet both are long games. Short games have more concise storylines and mechanics ( tunic, death's door, etc.). Did I enjoy zelda botw and hollow knight ? Yes. Will I ever visit it again ? Most probably not. Anyway, congrats on the sponsor and another banger of a video
Yeah, pretty much. Admittedly, I still want and need to do a completion of Red Dead 2. I got so sidetracked in that game I don;t even think I made it a quarter of the way through the main story before putting it down. I just like fishing and hunting too much.
I've played games such as Journey, Gris, Doki Doki Literature Club, Undertale, Outer Wilds, and The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog, and not a single one impressed me. I'd rather have games to focus ENTIRELY on the game and nothing else. I couldn't care less about its art direction, soundtrack, characters, or story if the gameplay isn't adequate. I play video games to replay them and enjoy them, not for some immersion or plots. I like scoring, having challenges, and improving my skills! It's why I'd play Super Mario, Dragon Quest, DOOM, Gradius, Burnout, or Street Fighter over these games. Give me quality gameplay with substance!
Totally valid! Like all media, everyone’s got different tastes. Part of my problem is that I like a majority of game genres and types, except maybe strategy games lol. I’m right there with you in enjoying video games that are focused on the “game” more than the “video” aspect. One of my favorite games of all time is Galaga, and I have to tell my friends to give me at least 15 minutes to play a round if I see a cabinet when we’re out 😅
Xenoblade chronicles comes to mind. I liked the environments, but that game is like 90% fat, I just couldn't force myself to play anymore after completing the Bionis
I'm just gonna call them rogue games If you like fishing games, you should check out the FFXV fishing game. Highly recommend Everhood and Rogue Glitch. The value of the game comes from the impact it has one me. It's all about impact.
Played Everhood and absolutely loved it. Someone else mentioned Rogue Glitch to me and I've wishlisted it! I've also meant to play FFXV. I feel like it got a lot of flak but a friend of mine from college absolutely loved it.
Right on. Honestly, the Rogue Glitch recommendation was probably me lol. As for FFXV, the first half is fun, but very flawed (as the movie doesn't even match the game....), but the last half is absolute GARBAGE! You're talking to a person that is VERY salty about the whole thing. I kept supporting it (buying all the DLC), believing the devs actually wanted to fix the game, but it was all lies...I will probably NEVER buy a Squenix game full price ever again. @@sl1ppey Of course I played the original one and not the Royal Edition, but it's hard to want to come back after such a disappointment.
I was going to give this vid a solid 10 out of 10 but with the besmirching of Alien Isolation I'll have to knock a point off. For shame sir! Jk great vid bud
good video, wish more people cared less about playtime. but you fell into the classic youtuber trap of titling your video a question, then hedging smmhhhh
It's not hedging if it's genuinely how I feel. As for the title, that's just the name of the game if you want people to click unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed the video, though.
And that’s totally valid! As I said at the end, longer games can be amazing, but I think we tend to attach value to the hours spent, rather than the actual quality of those hours.

Gonna be keeping an eye on the steam autumn sale this year for sure.
i also would LOVE to play voidigo but I don't have anything that can really run steam well :(
has anyone ever told u before that u would be doing youtube fulltime in a couple of years? your videos are great!
This is an incredibly kind comment. Thank you!
Brilliant video! I think you could find some value out of playing Arise: a simple story
It looks cute! Wishlisted.
Great video, Night in the Woods and Yume Nikki are my favorite games and my friend won't play them because they're too short.
i used to rely on the whole $1/hour thing, but then I played A Short Hike, which took me only an hour to beat, and realized how flawed that metric was
it really does feel like a lot of games these days exist solely to waste your time, which is why short games work excellently at making you feel like your time was well spent
have you checked out lil gator game? it reminds me a lot of a short hike and it borrows a lot of the fun stuff from breath of the wild like paragliding
I forgot about lil gator game! Gotta put that on the backlog
I think it's true to lots of types of media, movies, series, books, and, i think especially songs
Last warning!
Talk away. I like hearing about things a person is passionate about. I’m adding that band to my Spotify based on that name alone.
@@sl1ppey heh nice
@@sl1ppey anyway, so the gizzverse....
I just like fishing and hunting too much.
i want more THE PUNCHUIN
it was too short
What about the non videogame version of edging?
FNAF movie. The elements for a great movie are there, but ultimately leaves you unsatisfied.
Me a bully? Nooooo, couldnt be me nonono
SURELY NOT
@@sl1ppey noooooooooooooo fake news
One of my favorite games of all time is Galaga, and I have to tell my friends to give me at least 15 minutes to play a round if I see a cabinet when we’re out 😅
I don't like short games
I love them ❤
You should play super liminal if you haven’t already
Awee that’s one I’ve been meaning to play.. add it to my insurmountable landfill of a backlog lol
SL1PPEY YEAH
Xenoblade chronicles comes to mind. I liked the environments, but that game is like 90% fat, I just couldn't force myself to play anymore after completing the Bionis
That's a game I've always wanted to play but yeah I see 70+ hours on average just b-lining the main story and I'm like :x
I'm just gonna call them rogue games
If you like fishing games, you should check out the FFXV fishing game.
@@sl1ppey
Of course I played the original one and not the Royal Edition, but it's hard to want to come back after such a disappointment.
Play hylics and hylics 2. Both are shorter games I enjoyed a ton.
If you want a longer game, try disco elysium. It’s the best game I’ve ever played.
I own Disco Elysium but just haven't gotten around to playing it. I'll note Hylics down! Thanks for the recc.
what is the game in 2:29 ?
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog - An official free game from SEGA that came out on April Fools this year!
Short answer: yea
yea
I was going to give this vid a solid 10 out of 10 but with the besmirching of Alien Isolation I'll have to knock a point off. For shame sir! Jk great vid bud
LISSEN I love that game but it's got some pacing issues. HOWEVER, I still recognize it for its innovations with making a LEARNING adversary.
Undertale is short?
I’d say so given my personal definition of short being
good video, wish more people cared less about playtime. but you fell into the classic youtuber trap of titling your video a question, then hedging smmhhhh
It's not hedging if it's genuinely how I feel. As for the title, that's just the name of the game if you want people to click unfortunately. Glad you enjoyed the video, though.
@@sl1ppey I know, I'm just messing, I know the youtube algo is a bit of a game in its own right. cheers 🥂
@@breadguyyy Lol If I could just title my videos "i like this thing" I would. Hell maybe I'll try it someday and see what happens. Cheers dude.
@@sl1ppey next one should be called "I SPENT 100 DAYS IN THE WORLDS SHORTEST GAME 😱😱"
I Have have spent over 100 hours on a single playthrough In both of my favorite games, elden ring and terraria. So it's a no for me
And that’s totally valid! As I said at the end, longer games can be amazing, but I think we tend to attach value to the hours spent, rather than the actual quality of those hours.
@@sl1ppeythat is true. Quality over quantity, but quantity quality over quality.
Time, Dr. Freeman? Is it really that... time again? It seems as if you only just arrived. You've done a great deal in a small time-span. You've done so well, in fact, that I've received some interesting offers for your services. Ordinarily, I wouldn't contemplate them but these are extraordinary times. Rather than offer you the illusion of free choice, I will take the liberty of choosing for you... if and when your time comes round again. I do apologize for what must seem to you an arbitrary imposition, Dr. Freeman. I trust it will all make sense to you in the course of... well... I'm really not at liberty to say. In the meantime... this is where I get off.
incredible. Thanks g-man.
Good video Boomer
