ive been searching for interviews from the designers behind this car..... i want to build something that honors the history and the initial dream. loved this interview and will be watching the other Tetsuya Tada interviews i can find.
It is. We are getting the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ here in the States. Bascially everywhere but here is getting the Toyota version, but all have the same 2.0L Boxer
This interview clearly means a turbo is not coming in the near future. If they fit a turbo, they ll have to rebalance the whole car. Don't get me wrong. I am not too interested in the turbo. I just want the car.
I beg to differ. I work in the motorsports industry and I know Taro, from GT Channel (who posted this vid) personally, as well as many professional race car drivers and they LOVE this car. I have yet to drive one, but it appears to be everything I love about older (think E30, NA/NB MX5, AE86) FUN, lightweight, tossable cars that have all but disappeared. It's cheap, so naturally a bunch of kids will likely purchase them. But that doesn't undermine its brilliance. I want one!
I had the same observation, and one of those who is waiting for these to start coming up in a few years on used market. I don't like car payments, or plopping down $25k cash on a car, new or used. But I'm really hoping more people buy this so I have more choices down the road. It will be great to swap in jdm 2013 Legacy 300hp 2.0L turbo engine that was based on FRS engine in to the FRS/BRZ. Increase boost, re-tune, up to 400 reliable hp on stock internals, perfect chassis too.
This car is all about balance. Like a miata, known to be one of the most raced cars in the world, it is highly tuneable, but not for power output. The focus here is on suspension, brakes, tires, and optimizing the feel of the car. As he mentions multiple times in the interview, this car is not designed for all out speed, but he emphasizes balance and enjoyment. If you are seeking raw power, this car is not for you.
I noticed that you guys shortened the vid considerably because I saw a 20 min vid on my subscription box... reason for shortening it? awesome interview :D
the company Scion is owned by Toyota. that being said the FR-S is a GT-86 but here in America they badged it under Scion being that Toyota here in North America focus mainly on everyday fuel economic cars.
He didn't say the chassis was designed for low power, but the stock weight distribution was slightly shifted for low stock power. It is still close to 50/50 and worst case scenario you might use lighter parts in front like carbon fiber hood. Any car that gains significant horsepower, you will have to modify it.
Subaru and Toyota have collaborated on this car, so they both sell the cars (as said in the video) - the Scion badge is as far as I know only in North America, and they're mostly just rebadged Toyota cars (Scion is a Toyota subdivision). There's also a Scion iQ (exactly the same as the Toyota iQ)
"For instance, the FR-S badge on the front fender can be easily removed" - well, hard or not, a lot of people will swap the Scion badge ASAP ! re-badging FR-S into FT-86 & BRZ will be very popular in the US...
i like the part when he talked about the reaction of the subaru people when they were introduced into the idea... oooo... it's a drama.. hehe.. Nice interview GT channel..
Awesome video. Cool to find out that they considered a rotary engine too. That would have been very interesting to see, and maybe there would be a Mazda version instead of a Subaru. But I've never really understood just how much of this car is Toyota and how much is Subaru. Some sources give the impression that the only Subaru thing is the engine, others that is a joint effort, and some say that the only thing Toyota did was to tweak the suspension settings. So what's the real story?
If you're in to drag racing or straight line speed to beat other cars or run fast quarter miles, center of gravity might not be as important but helpful. If you're like me, who lives in an area with thousands of miles of twisty roads, lower center of gravity is a huge deal, cause it makes or breaks a fun predictable ride. Different sports car drivers have different needs.
this car is almost identical to the 12 year old fd rx7 in power and weight, and both have a similarly positioned of centre of gravity (low and centred)
I wish they'd state the rim weight and dimensions. Im hyped to see this car with basic bolton mods and some falken azenis. Nissan Chief Engineer Shiro Nakamura said his team has beening been building a scaled down 370z to competite with FR-S/BRZ but I dont think it will be as good. I am torn here because im a Nissan fanboy.
Scion is purely a north American. Lexus is everywhere including Japan as some people have gotten incorrect. Toyota is everywhere as well. Anyways lovely interview. Seems like a swell dude.
Did you even comprehend what he said? Tyres and rims are entirely different. Mr Tetsuya was explaining about how the FR-S is able to bring out the car's full potential, even with different brands of tyres. No one gives a shit about the rims.
He said they "want" to do it. I went to buy a new car once, knowing I qualified for a 2.9% promotional rate at the time. The dealer went into some "room" and came out and said hey, you're approved for 13.9%. I asked him if he was fucking kidding and if he was ready to stop bullshitting me. Should have seen the look on his face.
Lower centre of gravity means less less roll and flexing, so that should've also helped the engineers make the suspension setup better, both in terms of control and comfort. Not really crucial on "daily drives", but how the hell is any sports car going to "help" in daily driving?
Then you should find another dealer if they won't give you 2.9% or wait a bit for the cars price to drop in a month or two the dealers will start bringing in orders for the 2014 model and all the 2013s they have left will have to go so there will be way more wiggle room for you.
Dimera420 I'm with you on that one. I Just bought a Scion FR-S at a dealer and my Credict is fuckup 520 score and no job I work off the books :-) so with no Credict no job the bank approve me @ 10.83% so I'm ok with this APR can get any better than this
Great car...but, this car is aimed at a market that doesn't exist. A market that cant afford a 370z, but ignores the HUGE used car market, and wishes to tune their car, but doesn't mind waiting 2 years for the aftermarket to develop parts. I fear it will become a sought after tuner in 6 years that is all to uncommon, from the lack of sales. Had this car been set sub $20,000 it would be a different story. Like the NSX, people will love it but no one will have one because no one bought one.
Something shady is going on time for a different dealer and also the price is ALWAYS negotiable, either that or you're lying about the credit score, I walked into a Team Scion gave them all my information and am planning to trade in a car for 12,030 and they are dealing me with 2.9% APR and 205 a month at least if I go through with it, time for another dealer friend
Why would they put an unreliable, gas hogging, oil eating, loud rotary in it? Toyota's reputation is on the line, so they put a Subaru H4, which has decent (not great but decent) reliability..
That's bullshit. The tires suck balls. Once we 86 owners upgrade tires it's completely a different car. My FR-S in normal driving conditions you can hear and feel the stock tires fighting for grip. Yes they're good for sliding. But what's the point of making a car with so much potential to slide it off a cliff. And if the car came with 300hp turbo to the fly wheel it wouldn't need extra weight. A set of Coilovers will vouch for that.
lol i've seen toyota onwers replacing the badges with lexus and i've seen lexus owners putting toyota badges lol crazy world, not to mention acura and honda owners.
Why did they have to badge it as a Scion??? Whenever i see a Scion on the road, I usually see either a 70year old couple or a 20 year old smoking in his riced out xB.
And some cars are made to handle high aftermarket hp, this car isnt. Im over it anyways, this was a long time ago, and after 3 years wanting the car, ive decided to look elsewhere. no more complaints from me. Enjoy your car
My credit is perfect, he was just trying to see what he could get. You could not have bought anything for 2.9% without a promotional rate 5 years ago. Do try to use your brain a bit.
ive been searching for interviews from the designers behind this car..... i want to build something that honors the history and the initial dream.
loved this interview and will be watching the other Tetsuya Tada interviews i can find.
THIS IS THE ONLY REASON IM SUBSCRIBED TO GTCHANNEL
to gain knowledge of cars.. especially from keichi tsuchiya
very nice interview.. and the engineer has alot of passion for his creations : ) i can tell .
It is. We are getting the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ here in the States. Bascially everywhere but here is getting the Toyota version, but all have the same 2.0L Boxer
I agree... The FD3S is one of those car's that will NEVER look old, or outdated.
This interview clearly means a turbo is not coming in the near future. If they fit a turbo, they ll have to rebalance the whole car. Don't get me wrong. I am not too interested in the turbo. I just want the car.
I just can't wait to see what these can do with a more aggressive rim and Tire set up. Will probably throw down some awesome numbers!
Time to get a eurobeat playlist going

Day 1 test drive!

Tada-san you are my hero!!!
Editorial hiccup. We re-uploaded the correct file.

I would love to see Takumi drive this in INITIAL D
thanks for the info... it make since
My next car.
Thank you for all these infos.
Have you test drove it yet?
this car is almost identical to the 12 year old fd rx7 in power and weight, and both have a similarly positioned of centre of gravity (low and centred)
good interview

Cuts right through all the internet forum rumor mill bullshit.
Actually Nissan is planning to produce FR cars again but it's going to be under the Datsun name since they are bringing it back for that reason
Awesome, thanks.
awesome vid!
Are you the foxiol from GTPlanet??
True. He said you could remove the badge
Please find a solution to the leaky direct injectors.
Scion is purely a north American. Lexus is everywhere including Japan as some people have gotten incorrect. Toyota is everywhere as well.

At 1:35 Takumi's AE86 ! ! ! :D
That's why I love Scion. They make ALL their cars for people to tune them lol
weights the same (which is great) but the FD had between 50-80 more HP amirite
i just wish it had a supercharger or something..... i love everything about it... just would like more torque for everyday driving
GT5 and forza 4 brings here, the new car DLC
He said they "want" to do it. I went to buy a new car once, knowing I qualified for a 2.9% promotional rate at the time. *puts on sun glasses* Oh yah!
there making the new 86GT drift cars
Lower centre of gravity means less less roll and flexing, so that should've also helped the engineers make the suspension setup better, both in terms of control and comfort. Not really crucial on "daily drives", but how the hell is any sports car going to "help" in daily driving?
Isnt the 370Z considered FR?
When I heard "subaru" - *sad*. But looks car will be great, wonder the price.
Then you should find another dealer if they won't give you 2.9% or wait a bit for the cars price to drop in a month or two the dealers will start bringing in orders for the 2014 model and all the 2013s they have left will have to go so there will be way more wiggle room for you.
Oh you're so famous lol. *paparazzi surrounds Foxiol*
i cant understand why they keep saying its 200HP while its actually 179HP?! O_o
Lmao Pizza cutters? Somebody needs to take a trip back to high school and retake physics class. It's suppose to make the care more aerodynamic.
SUBARU Is so great!!!
Dimera420 I'm with you on that one. I Just bought a Scion FR-S at a dealer and my Credict is fuckup 520 score and no job I work off the books :-) so with no Credict no job the bank approve me @ 10.83% so I'm ok with this APR can get any better than this
Exactly what would I have to gain about anonymously lying about my credit rating to strangers?
isnt this sapose to be coming out for Toyota with a boxter engine
25000$ for manual trans and 26000$ for automatic
Should have put a rotary in it
Have they stated the dimensions or weight of the rims?
Great car...but, this car is aimed at a market that doesn't exist. yup but nissan in north america is copying toyota and making sub companies to make it appeal to a different age groups and to possibly make it cheaper
he also admits that the chassis was designed for low power so have fun tuning.
oh and i didnt get a promotional rate btw
@LordThoriner Dude they are the same car
This guy needs to head over to Nissan and start putting a s16 together haha
Is it weird that, while I'm watching this video, I'm paying a lot of attention to how the dialogue translator rendered the Japanese into English?
Something shady is going on time for a different dealer and also the price is ALWAYS negotiable, either that or you're lying about the credit score, I walked into a Team Scion gave them all my information and am planning to trade in a car for 12,030 and they are dealing me with 2.9% APR and 205 a month at least if I go through with it, time for another dealer friend
やっぱ本職の方の説明が1番
whats with the old p0rn music?
Sounds like your credit sucks too man.
First made toyota this style than subaru and yet scion?!?!? confusing :D
Why would they put an unreliable, gas hogging, oil eating, loud rotary in it? Toyota's reputation is on the line, so they put a Subaru H4, which has decent (not great but decent) reliability..

Hahahaha, damn bro you must have horrible credit. I just bought a TC2 @ 2.9%
most girls don't like coupes actually
And some cars are made to handle high aftermarket hp, this car isnt. Im over it anyways, this was a long time ago, and after 3 years wanting the car, ive decided to look elsewhere. no more complaints from me. Enjoy your car
WTF?? Mazda built N/A FD's and FC's, with no where near 250hp.... Shit even a turbo-II FC didn't make 250hp.
lol subaru "WTF a subaru with no AWD and no turbo?"
My credit is perfect, he was just trying to see what he could get.
You could not have bought anything for 2.9% without a promotional rate 5 years ago. Do try to use your brain a bit.
i wish they took an rotary engine
i saved so long for this great car. and im offended at its power. i feel like i have been robbed. oh well, i'll have to spend my money somewhere else
3rd
Ill be removing the ugly scion badges for a Toyota badge.
still not as sexy as an s15
I think its a bit ugly and thats why I'm never going to buy one.
