      @Stefan Langer but I actually soloed in THAT glider... the one sitting there.....
      I really like the ASK. I used to have an RC model of one with a 3.5 meter wingspan. It was my biggest airplane for about 12 years until it literally flew away. I lost radio contact with it and it was programmed to enter a turn as a fail safe. It hooked into a monster thermal and it just kept going up until I lost sight of it.....
      We were flying ridge lift. Nothing but a thousand miles of mountainous terrain downwind of my position.
      It flew beautifully. It's only been 8 or 9 years. Its probably still flying.
      I wouldn't be surprised if they find it on the moon some day.
      Hope they do, I would really like to have it back.
      It had a full size video camera in it. One of the old BIG ones.

    Nice to see that even a Pro like you sometimes feels like he is not capable to center or find a good thermal... happens to me on almost every flight. Great desert footage! Been there many times but only on the ground. Too bad the weather was no good enough to fly over the strip.

      @@Tannerxcsoaring I think most of us in the US will always have a soft spot for the 2-33 and 1-26. Their easy and fun to fly... and great teaching platforms! You have to admit, though... they would look a bit strange to someone used to glass ships.

    • @KestrelYI
      @KestrelYI Рік тому

      The 1-26 is definitely a very agile little glider and can be quite exciting/active on a day with good lift. Slower speeds make cross country difficult... but on the other hand make it quite easy to keep centered in a good thermal.

    Those solar towers near Vegas are visible from a great distance away. I see them all the time flying into Vegas and Southern California as an airline pilot. I’m a little embarrassed the condition of our glider fields compared to Deutschland and Europe in general. It looks more like a junk yard compared to yours.

    • @SteFly
      @SteFly  Рік тому

      It was a great experience to fly there. The conditions were not perfect... but that's gliding. I think the high clouds in the morning prevented the ground to heat up enough and the high wind speed in the higher level made the thermals difficult. You can even see lenticularis clouds forming on top of some CUs.
      In Germany we usually don't have such a high cloud base but better possibilities to perform a land out. In your area I only had the airfields as an option and always wanted to have a lot of safety margin.

    Like K7s and 8s aren't funny looking? Many American pilots learned to fly in 2-33s and had our first single seat and XC experiences in 1-26s. Not of elegant, but they served their function for decades.

  • @Paul-vh6ul

    Some days, you drive for hours, assemble the glider, suffer the heat, pay dearly for a high aerotow, and then you have a short mediocre flight. But then the next week when you find fabulous lift, you feel very lucky and fortunate. This is part of what keeps gliding interesting. Choosing when and where to launch is partly skill and partly luck.
    Most days like this, the weather forecast, especially a Skew-T point forecast, and the look of the clouds would have predicted the sparse updrafts. But if you're there, you might still take a tow and hope to get lucky. If you do well with a poor forecast, you have maybe improved your technique.
    I wonder if the local pilots were able to stay up on this day that Stefan, unfamiliar with the local conditions and 'house thermals' got shot down?

      @SteFly  Рік тому

      Yeah, I was used to these high tows from Truckee 😅
      The tow pilot said it was his highest tow he ever made from Jean. But the conditions at the beginning very not great and in the area of the airport the high clouds disappeared late. At the end I was glad to connect to the thermals and that I didn't need to make a second tow.

      Man muss seine europäische Lizenz validieren lassen. Dazu wird ein schriftlicher Antrag gestellt und in den USA benötigt man dann noch einen Termin vor Ort bei der Luftfahrtbehörde.
