And if you listened to what she said, if that's the case then you need to alter your environment and heal from your trauma and fix bad habits. Not be medicated.

Honestly, as a 30 year old adult, being on the right combination of medications for depression/anxiety/adhd has made my life so much less miserable and continues to have second order effects. When I feel better, I do more things that will make my future self feel better and so on. As far as crushing the “dreamer” in children, if anything, I think medication can make it actually possible for some people to pull their dreams out of their heads and make them happen in the real world. That said, the choice to medicate is a complex one, especially if you are making that choice for your kid. I think that if my parents had treated my issues earlier, I would have been a lot more successful. I spent basically 10 years after age 18 trying to sort out my mental health enough to even begin to function at a normal level.

If you're so much of a mess than you require pills that's alright. But 99% of people aren't in that situation. They need lifestyle change and therapy.

I think romanticizing a genius ‘dreamer’ inside every child whose parents label them ‘distracted’ is a pretty small lens to see what is actually going on here. What about when you so desperately try to get your career off the ground but it’s been ten years ? Or you can’t figure out why relationships don’t last more than 6 months ? Even worse is when the actual side effects start pulling down your self esteem alongside your over drawn bank account and yet everyday you ask yourself “But I had so much potential”.
I agree medication seems like a trap, but undermining the behavior and actual mental disorder as a whole, just seems like a lack of research. And asking society to change as a whole ? I’d love that but that’s not realistic. That takes lifetimes. People with ADHD want to enjoy their life today, but most feel like they’re failing constantly and can’t figure out why. This goes way beyond ‘day dreaming’ and anxiety.

We need more mental health advocates for children. By age 9 my daughter was prescribed 4 medications! We can’t keep medicating kids to meet someone else’s definition of “normal”. Kids should be kids. They should be allowed time outside to play and run “freely” and to develop like the social beings we were intended to be. The University’s around the country need to adapt to what it truly means to “help a child through healthy development “ not poison them with toxic drugs. The drugs put kids behind, not the kids being kids. I’m curious if the drug companies fund teaching programs? We know they find medical programs.

G.S.T. 30684; SPOT-ON U R!!!!! I'm age 55 (DOB: 7/20/1967) but when I was age 4 in 1971, I was on Ritalin (that started a path of being on 30+ different psych meds ovr a 40+ yr period b4 becoming psych med-free on 1/1/2017). @ age 10 in 1977, I was on Thorazine (adult-strength dosage, mind u). That fucked-up my sexual development. @ age 18, I had been on @ least 8 different psych meds. All bc my parents (whom were an only child from their respective families whereas I have an older sister whom I'm currently estranged from due 2 the psych med & other personal issues) bought in2 the "chemical imbalance" philosophy RE: mental health conditions. Again; this was in the early 1970s (50+ yrs ago) when I was put on psych meds (Ritalin in particular) all.bc some1 didn't like my behavior. W/that said, my parents did luv me but definitely didn't RESPECT me. W/o respect, there's no true luv. That blatant disrespect definitely can b very damaging 2 some1's mental health. All bc it's so much easier 2 medic8 than communic8. Then again, the info RE; negative effects from psych meds was blatantly squelched prior 2 approx a decade ago; bc mental health personnel (read: psychiatrists) & "Big Pharma" were essentially "in bed" w/each other. Compounding this matter; the info RE: negative effects from psych meds is now widely available 2 the general public (via the internet/social media) yet mental health personnel remains very rigid in their stance RE: mental health conditions REQUIRING "TREATMENT" (the euphemism 4 medication) yet meds r OPTIONAL 4 other health conditions (even insulin 4 diabetes---which mental health personnel luv equ8ing mental health conditions 2---is OPTIONAL---NOT MANDATORY/REQUIRED---as treatment 4 diabetes). In other words, medication shall b a LAST RESORT (NOT THE 1ST/ONLY RESORT)!!!!!

@@montesa9136 Just because it can doesn't mean it's common. You're really going to tell me anxiety and depression will not come from some sort of traumatic/negative experience in someone's life? Most disorders in the organs HAVE a reason and can be diagnosed with diagnostic testing. It will be very apparent. Does heart disease just one day magically appear?
If there were a random malfunction in someone's brain as you call it, wouldn't it be something that the individual was likely born with? Why is it that it's something that develops around the teenage phase/early adulthood phase. Also, if it were to be a malfunction wouldn't you believe that there'd likely be better answers for it. For example, a child born with a heart defect. There's no denying that defect is there. You have imaging that can accurately diagnose it, and surgical intervention that can up the quality of life drastically. Why is it if a brain malfunctions, we still have absolutely no clue where it comes from unless it were to be from a TBI, or a disorder along those lines.

I do agree that the anxiety was possibly inherited and even treatable through talk therapy. As we get into ADD/ADHD and those on the spectrum it gets murky. I grow through what I go through. What you resist persists and looms ever larger. Now I know in my middle years. Just "easier" get a diagnosis take a pill and stand in line.

Does anyone know when this was filmed (The original footage)? Seems super out dated to me considering the research on ADHD and dopamine. I think she is right and wrong. Of course anxiety, impulsivity and distractibility have evolutionary value and purposes but when something is chronic and unbalanced beyond the normal levels then I thinks its safe to start investigating these as disorders! We all need to take a shit but if you are shitting 30-40 times a day I would start asking questions!
    - for people with ADHD Stimulants don't crush dreams, they boost them. Since getting the correct treatment (which includes a panoply of tools not just meds) I have never been more creative and motivated to produce! Not treating ADHD for 10 years though gave me genralised anxiety.
    - Poeple with untreated ADHD are MORE likely to become addicts than those who are being treated.
I really love Anna and her work perhaps this is out of context without the nuance she usually provides. If anyone wants to listen to a good balanced podcast on the neurobiology of ADHD check out Andrew Hubermans podcast. ua-cam.com/video/hFL6qRIJZ_Y/v-deo.html

Dr. Anna; SPOT-ON U R!!!!! Speaking of ENVIRONMENTAL IMBALANCES; when some1 gets abused, bullied, & harassed by other people (especially by those in authority; I believe that u know what I'm alluding 2), that ends up shaping 1's mental health. When some1 (especially children) takes a stand & fights back against abusers, antagonists, bullies, harassers, instig8rs, & perpetr8rs, the person on the receiving end often gets punished by being drugged 2 "control" the behavior & those who provoked it (i.e.: abusers, antagonists, bullies, harassers, instig8rs, & perpetr8rs) often get off "scot-free". Again, Dr. Anna; COMPLETELY AGREED RE: ENVIRONMENTAL IMBALANCES as a cause of mental health conditions.
