As much as I adore the ST:TNG crew, nothing truly compares to the love I've got for the OG Star Trek gang. I probably watched the original tv series repeats on BBC2 to death when I was younger. I can understand why some Trek fans might dislike the humorous tone of this movie, but I loved the fact that it was more of a light hearted adventure, with a serious message.
I don't think it gets mentioned enough in the comments section, but I would like to thank Brad Watson for his input in these shows.

Halfway through this video I went and watched the movie for the first time because I felt so out of the loop with the jokes and I have to say what an excellent movie. The jokes are incredible and the characters are great. As an Original Series fan it made me miss Star Trek being happy and not you know, Bad Robot...

I love when Richard and Brad talk about Trek, I could literally watch/listen for another hour at least. There should be a series of you two reviewing the shows, maybe not episode by episode but lumping together like 5 episodes or just talking about one season at a time. Starting from TOS of course! (And including the brilliant animated series too!) :)

Voyage Home is my favorite Star Trek! Saw it in San Francisco when it first came out.

The first one I saw at cinemas was 'Undisovered Country' and remember everyone had a good chuckle at the "go to hell" line from Spock. It took me a while to appreciate Voyage Home as a kid, but it's wonderful.

The best quote from the film is where McCoy says about Spock,
‘He's not exactly working on all thrusters.’
This was my first Star Trek film I saw at the cinema, & absolutely love this film, it’s a shame the humour & the light adventure was never carried over in to the TNG films.

McCoy's got a few good funny lines, the "thrusters" comment was the best, I also liked the "You mean I have to die, to discuss your views on death?" and the more subtle line when he interjects with "Off the deep end" When Kirk asks Scotty if the cargo bay could be made to hold water and Scotty asks Kirk if he plans to go for a swim.
The closest the TNG films got to the vibe of ST4 with similar humor I think would be First Contact... which happened to be another time-travel related plot. Riker's "You're blended alright" (When dealing with a drunk Deanna Troi) and "You told him about the statue?" (after he and Geordi stun Zephram Cochrane) and Deanna's "Would you three like to be alone?" when Picard and Data are touching the Phoenix). When you add in the crew trying to deal with Zepham Cochrane's idiosyncrasies as a selfish, greedy, irresponsible drunkard, unlike his historic depictions, it add a bit more fun with the interactions of a serious-minded crew members and a slacker goofball. Plus, it did have the most badass line in all of the TNG films, Worf's "Assimilate this..." 😎

“Stealing the Enterprise” is such an amazing classical piece. I’ve heard the intro is modeled on Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet.”

"The Star Trek fans are dying for a bit of fun, now". The current James Bond franchise should heed that advice. After a few deadly serious ones with grief, fans want a laugh, and just fun, despite the studio seemingly thinking they don't.

As someone who doesn't hold any real respect for Star Trek . . . I quite liked this film. It was pleasant. I'd love for more modern big budget movies to be pleasant. Wouldn't it be nice if Guardians 3 was just the guys meeting up for a space pint?
Also rest in peace Keith Flint :(

I was thinking it'd be nice if GG3 just lent into it's in-built Red Dwarf-ness and be not about a big bad plot, but a fun romp, with lots of jokes.

    • @henryglennon3864

I think there's an alternate universe where the script got some more rewrites and the budget was spent more wisely, where V is the best Star Trek movie. It's definitely not bad for a lack of ideas and ambition, unlike Star Trek now.

I like V too. Bad effects aside, it's those characters and those relationships that make me love original Trek. Sybok is a great foil for Kirk too.

    • @walter_the_wobot2349
      @walter_the_wobot2349 5 років тому

Yes, and for me, those actors too. I just don’t feel any connection to the new actors playing those roles, I’ve never felt comfortable with the recasting.
Unlike say, Batman, Kirk and co were not created in a book, Shatner IS Kirk. Shatner created Kirk. Same goes for the other actors.
ST V give us great insight into those characters. It also had tremendous acting, a imo, a pretty good plot. It walked a tightrope successfully. Sure, some of the effects are a bit ropy but I don’t feel the film deserves the hate it gets. It’s better than any of the JJ films imo.

A favourite film now I'm an adult but as a kid, this was bizarre to me! Mainly I think because my big love was Khan, with all the wonderful space battles and Mutara Nebula etc - so the crew on Earth, and flying a hijacked Bird of Prey about was just weird! But as I say, I was a dumb kid. Now I can see it for the warm and cosy lighthearted look at Trek that it is. And the comedy is fantastic; as you and Brad so brilliantly show in this, there are so many great lines! Each cast member really shines in their own mission, and it truly showcases what a terrific cast they were/are. I went to a Trek marathon at the PCC in 2010, and the BoP appearing over the whaling ship was f**king awesome on the big screen!
Bones: 'You mean I have to DIE to discuss your insights on death?!'
Spock: 'Excuse me, Doctor, I am receiving a number of distress calls.'
    Bones: 'I don't doubt it...'

I love Star Trek 4. I've alway said Star Trek 2 is probably the best but Star Trek 4 is my favourite. Also I've found myself more recently moving away from the even numbered films are best opinion. To now thinking as Richard mentions 2 3 4 are Star Trek Gold.
6 is amazing too. But i'd now also rather watch 5 and 1 than the Generation movies.

I love Star Trek IV. Always hoped there'd be a time travel to contemporary earth story, with the new Trek cast.....probably not going to happen now. Edit: That scene where the decide how they're going to save the earth is the best bit! Spock doing the sciencey bit, Kirk the man of action - putting the plan in effect, and McCoy - the man of reason, questioning the sanity of it all, brilliant! If only the new movies could truly reflect this dynamic.

The key to ST IV is that there is not a true antagonist. It’s the ultimate man v nature story. The probe is the catalyst but it’s not an enemy. Even the FBI agents are written like an Abbott and Costello routine. In another filmmakers hands the FBI scene would have been played as a straight forward conflict with bullets flying. Nobody would make a film like this today.

    • @davidjames579

Star Trek was born out of an idea that you didn't just have to have fight bad guys stories. It could be an exploration of ideas. It's a pity modern ST doesn't try to remember that. The Bad Robot films are a lot of the time just trying to be like Star Wars, all combat.

My favourite little titbit about this film is that they use the Klingon bird of prey they acquired in Star Trek III to time travel to the 1980s.
Who was the previous captain of the bird of prey?
    CHRISTOPHER LLOYD!

Dammit Jim I have to re-watch IV now... I love this film so much. That said I do think that Voyage along with Wrath is responsible for beginning the dumbing down of Star Trek. Although these films didn't do so themselves, they certainly introduced some troupes that became overused as future projects tried to recreate their broad appeal. Still, the genesis trilogy is just plain amazing. Controversial opinion but Search for Spock is actually my favorite.
