They may have been tumultuous, but they were splendid! Those two years they achieved well above even what I'd expected! It helped to have a handful of veterans, especially Leiter's postseason experience! The chemistry came together and blended well with the lesser known guys! Along with Leiter, having Rickey, Olerud, Piazza and Ventura was invaluable
On the other hand, to me, the guy on those clubs that underachieved because I'd seen him play at Ga Tech on the amateur level while I attended Western Carolina University was Jay Payton! He had brief moments, but with his potential, could have done so much more
Man this is the team I miss. So many incredible moments from platoon guys and spare parts. Agbayani, Pratt, Franco, Dunston.. this is the type of roster this pitiful current club needs.
I have been as critical as anyone of Berman especially when it comes to doing play-by-play over the years - but he actually delivers a great call of Pratt's walkoff homer in this one. Probably the signature call of his career.
Great game. The ‘99 team is my fav met team of all time. It’s a shame they couldn’t get past Atlanta. I would love to see the Matt Franco walk-off hit game off of Mariano Rivera. That was the most memorable game of the ‘99 regular season.
Whats forgotten about this game is that Leiter pitched a gem, just after his complete-game-shut-out-gem against the Reds to decide the NL Wild Card Its forgotten because Benitez blew the save, Benitez first blown save in an important game as a member of the Mets :) ... Forgotten because Mets won in dramatic fashion in the end 2:18:00 Benitez blown save
Sure the Fonz didn’t play all that long but he should have his number retired by the Mets. 3 years in a row you name the situation and Fonzy was in the middle of it.
That was when baseball was still baseball. A starting pitcher would throw between 120 to 130 pitches. Now they are gonre between the 5th and 6th inni ngs.

Alfonzo became a breakout star for a short time with his contributions! His fielding, along with Ordonez, was impeccable

The commercials are the best part. What I wouldn’t give to live in the care free feelings of 1999

And it should be noted he didn't "overspeak" and allowed to visual to tell the story following his very good call.

Best game Mets and Yanks ever played against each other.
Boy oh boy when Shea would rock it was deafening

Ray Knight forgot he was retired. Awful in the Booth. Charlie Williams nailed the call.
That METS' infield was the best defensive infield in the history of MLB.
Agreed very good but my Yankees were good too.
3:32:26
I believe this was the game that saw Cookie Rojas shoving an umpire over a foul call -- 2:52:00

No. His number should not be retired.
The umpire pushed Rojas first. Don't blame him one bit for going crazy
No he didn't. Typical idiot fan.
