Putting it in a float mode is how I used to do it. I used to own my own landscape company
I work for a DPW that deals with large baseball/softball fields. From time to time we drive over the grass to put down infield mix, contractors come to do work also and leave big tire mark ruts. I'm wondering if we need something like this to fix those issues?

every time ive ran or have seen one ran, it was always done in forward not reverse
I redid (smoothed out) about 400 acres of old hay fields, I originally bought a Virnig harley rake which is the same as the one you have. I found it works best on drier soil. Not so dry that it causes dust...just slightly wet. I'd say 2-3 sunny days after rain is good. I eventually got fed up because the teeth weren't penetrating deep enough. I had to run over the same areas 4-6 times. I sold the rake and got the Schulte SMR800 which is also a harley rake but it has 4" long teeth that really penetrate. Either rake you choose, it's a very slow process. I wish someone made a harley rake that's 12+ ft. wide. They do a good job and help break hard compacted soil especially if you don't want to till. Harley's also do a very nice job breaking big clumps and smoothing after tillage. It's a great tool to have on a farm.

I believe you are supposed to go forward to level - going backwards - your tracks are going up and down in the ruts and the rake follows

once you u learn how to operate it , you will find this to be the most useful tool you own, an experienced operator would have your project in decent shape in 90 min, despite the wet conditions
1. those wheels are there for a reason, to bridge out the wheelbase and control the down pressure on the drum, eliminating the choppyiness. they should almost always have contact with the work, which allows fine control of drum pressure. The wheels also can be height adjusted for site conditions.
2 higher engine rpm isnt always your friend, adjusting drum speed for conditions , dont be afraid to experiment, u can always fix it !
3. reverse is usually better for fine finish grade cutting ,=and carring of the material, and the last pass to make it perfect
Look at the bright side Brock, you now have another video idea. You can show off your power washer on cleaning up the harly rake and skid steer.. lol.. just another project.. I always find that one project always leads to the next..lol..

Another UA-camr fabricated a track cleaning tool for me.
I really don't see the point in one of these rakes vs a rotary tiller, I guess it doesn't leave the soil as fluffed up so you don't need to make a second pass w/a different implement for that but if you're in comparing them for purchase a power rake is like 10k for a tractor vs 3k for a tiller. Unless I'm missing something.

You need to roll it with a roller after you seed it to make sure the seed gets good contact with the soil .🤠

I have a German Short Hair Pointer and he has dug up my bacyard, and the weeds grow so fast after a mow. I have to mow and weedeat every week to keep the weeds low. The holes in the ground get covered my the weeds amd you can twist your ankle walking in my backyard.

Hi Brock, two thoughts.
It being too wet, wouldn't going over it again with same setup when it's dryer produce the best result.
Second, past couple years you worked on drainage and pitch for runoff, I'd imagine now would be the time if more is needed or do you think your done.

I have never seen a harley rake in action. That is going to be an awesome piece of equipment, but yeah, immediately you could tell it was too muddy to do what it was supposed to do. I'm like you though, sometimes you just gotta try it to see what happens.
I was expecting a Harley davidson pulling a yard rake.
I think it will be a lot better when you are done.
1.apply roundup 2.wait for soil to dry out ( if you’re forced to ware a mask you’re doing it right). 3.take some soil samples to a lab and the report will tell you if you need to apply dolomite or starter fertilizer only. 4. Decide if you want to overseed or lay sod and plan accordingly ( a terrain with slopes more than 3 degrees will be difficult to irrigate without issues .4. Sod will be easier to irrigate but needs to be mown in stages to prevent some areas to go into dormancy .
Remember the Hardy Rake only acts as a grading tool and separator when the soil is dry.

I have a bunch of ground like that I need to smooth out. I gotta find a way to do it with a box blade though. People did it that way for years.
I find a box blade works great on loose dirt, but it is more difficult with the sod on it because the sod clumps won’t spread out smooth.
Ya way too wet and now u have to clean off mud before it dry up hard.
Waiting on "perfect" soil conditions is not always feasible. If you wait until it's too dry it will cause even worse problems, turning the soil into powder and destroying the structure.

Would a landscape rake may have worked better?
I find using my landscape rake on damp soil just makes a mess. The soil needs to be pretty dry to flow between the tines - otherwise, it just clogs up the tines and makes the rake act like a rear blade.

You can run a day forward or reverse. It will spin either way.
You could have used it pushing foreward 😉
The higher up in elevation the drier the soil will be should of kept going and do all the area.

No. Some people will tell you that and then some people will tell you that they only pull with it.

Why not use a tiller attachment?
A tiller can be used to do this in a pinch but if you’ve ever done it, you know that the result is kind of lumpy and clumpy.
The Hartley rake specifically designed to smooth and pulverize soil like this. The short answer is, because this works better.
The best option here would have been to get a chisel behind a tractor first and turn that soil to dry it out,,then the harley rake...
I'm thinking a tractor and tiller would do a much better job.

This is a shocker! (But appreciate you’re learning) Absolutely, no reason whatsoever to be going backwards for this job. You loose so many options/functions going backwards while looking through a small reverse camera( especially on a large wide open space you’re operating on - plus your awareness is greatly affected)You can’t angle the rake, you overlap…and you can’t make the small on the fly changes you need with your depth as you could going forwards.
Do you have hi flow? Can be useful for keeping drum speed, but allows you to lower the revs and take it much easier - A revved up machine can buck
You also CANT level with a harly rake, only smooth the ground out smh
That is when and how NOT TO DO IT.
