Honeybees are dying from parasites, pesticides, and poor nutrition, but we can help them in a number of ways, including by encouraging them to make a homemade antibiotic.
Thanks also to our Patreon patrons / minuteearth and our UA-cam members.

To learn more, start your googling with these keywords:
Propolis: a kind of bee glue made up of resins and beeswax, rich in flavonoids and aromatic acids with antibiotic properties
Pollination circuit: commercial bee-keepers move their colonies around the country, renting them out to farmers to pollinate almonds, apples, and many other crops.
Bee health: term used to indicate concern about a set of issues challenging to health of honey bees, including parasites, pathogens, and pesticides.

I recently started working as an engineer at a farm for several crops that has it's own bee colonies. The rough wood and plastic with holes in them have worked so well that we've discovered a way to produce surplus propolis and sell it.
This is true, I was honey bees researcher who live in Indonesia .. if you study about bees parasites (esp Varroa Mites - originally came from Indonesia), you will understand this parasites able to destroyed entire hive in just 1 - 3 months.
This bees (mellifera), only live if we used "insecticide", yes I'm not kidding "insecticide" .. using the right dosis you can kill mites without harming bees too much .. the biggest concern is, it contaminate the whole hive, including honey.
Dr Marla Spivak & her team project are great, she try to breeding mite resistance bees. I believe her research is the future of beekeeping 😇
I don't know. Doesn't squeezing more propolis out of bees have some other negative effect. If propolis is good for sensitization, how come they didn't begin to do it on their own?
@@Paul-oi2wz they do,its just that the propolis cant stick to the smooth frames often used by commercial beekeepers so the bees dont do it
I'm curious of your opinion, seeing as how you've done some research, on Paul Stamets' study into how bees use certain mushrooms to ward off these mites and diseases. He says a major contributor to CCS is due to _fungicides_ and deforestation, where these wild mushroom networks grow. I was actually surprised the video didn't mention it.
Hello Indonesia guy and me
I read in a few scientific studies that mention that the bees need to die because they are an invasive species. They reduce pollination opportunities for native born pollinators, like the agipostimon, and moths. It also mentioned the diseases they transfer to other species and since they have been protected by humans, unlike the other native species that have to fight to survive. I will provide the link if I can find it again. If any scientists or anyone who is a professional in this matter can assist me in understanding the contradiction that would be very appreciated. (I am not an expert in any field just genuinely curious as I don't know and would like to)

That would be amazing if we can support the Bees with rougher hives to protect themselves. But of course, the issue is larger than that. Monocultures and highly coordinated almond field pollination schemes need to be rethought and changed if we want to save the Bees.
When I first learnt about how terrible monoculture is back in the day I probably did the biggest slap on my forehead of 'oh jesus, we screwed up' that I've done in my life. Although, it did make a fascinating lecture of information!
Haha. I hear you. What were the other moments of slap in your face?
Haha, the official term will forever be 'slap in your face' now! Hmm, good question. I think along the same thought process is the idea that organic farming is in every way better than monoculture/large scale industrial farming and how really the term 'Organic' is used as a brilliant marketing ploy. It's got its benefits, but not nearly as many as people like to blindly believe. I obviously learnt this pre-university as it's a fairly simply concept to grasp, but it was equally a slap in the face moment when you consider the price tag that comes with these things! (Note: I don't look down on people that opt for organic in any way, people can do as they like and it doesn't bother me!)
Fair enough. I remember a similar moment where I did realize the genius behind the organic foods marketing concept. It works so well because we are fundamentally lazy and want the easy solution. One tag/brand that tells us we are doing things the right way, no complicated questions asked.
@Cary Howe thanks Cary for your thoughtful reply. I think you are making a great point. Some easy changes would already be a huge step in the right direction but too many forces and systems have high inertia and don't want to change.

XSportSeeker I laught so hard. Best no expected event today
This is great information for me as a beekeeper. Also, I noticed that some queen lines use a lot more propolis than others (when you need that extra strength to draw combs). The docile and productive lines like Carniolan or Italian bees have also been selected to use propolis sparingly. Probably a mistake, just like breeding for yellow or grey abdomens or queen size. The russian Primorski bee still uses a lot of propolis. In my apiary, I only breed from hives that are productive, healthy and disease resistant and, to a lesser extent, can still be handled well. The offspring look totally different, I have hives with small dark bees, larger yellow ones and hives with uniformly grey bees like Carniolans. They are all healthy and industrious.
I've heard from a conservationist that thanks to the efforts of beekeepers we're no longer losing honeybees but that other species, specific pollinators, are still dying out at an alarming rate. Is there anything one can do about this?
@@akschmidt2085 True. The solitary bees, butterflies, bumblebees, predatory wasps are really suffering from the loss of biodiversity
You missed an opportunity to pun: Anti-bee-otics.

Good luck.
Wow, talk about low-tech solutions - rough up your bee hives. Love it.
Interestingly I have placed flyscreen mesh on the top of my hives - so I could open the lid and inspect from top (and show my grandkids the hive safely) - the bees are continually sealing flyscreen mesh with propolis - one is almost completely sealed, the other smaller hive is about 50% sealed with propolis...

We've got a Linden tree in the front yard and the bees love it so much that they all seem to get drunk off it. I have no other way to describe it. You can shake them off a flower and they won't care. They'll just move onto the next one. We also have a bunch of apple trees from way back when people planted orchards here so we don't have to plant many flowers around here to keep our bees happy. Just have to toss a few flower seeds along the road and that's all they need. Used to be more when my grandmother was alive, but I'm using her flower beds to plant a variety of vegetables instead so they should still give them a good variety.
Ha! Fool, you’ve just revealed the secret weapon. Now no one can stop me from saving bees!

those bees are an invasive species that killed off the local fauna that was responsible for the pollinating task here in the Americas. we had a big variety of bees here before and they just lost space cause us humans focused our attention to the european and african bees that we knew instead of studying and using the local bees.

What I dont understand is the fact that North America wasn't a barren wasteland before European Honey Bees were brought over, North America has it's own pollinators and other creatures that pollinate flowers and the only reason European Honey Bees were brought over to North America was because they made honey, North America wasn't dead before they came here so I'm confused as to why people are so obsessive over them.

Is there a particular tree that bees tend to nest in? If given a choice, will bees pick a particular tree over the others?
If so...
1. Maybe start making hives out of that wood.
2. What is in that wood, or sap, that helps prevent nites or disease?
Aren't honey bees like an invasive species in north america?
No they are a common bee
YES they are killing native polinators like the far cuter bumblebee. (sorry if this year old reply was annoying)
Aldo look up Paul Stamet's mycology research for bees. Also look up permaculture
I never knew about propolis! I knew it was antibiotic but not that bees spread more on rough surfaces.
This explains why my father used to buy very old beehives from the neighbour! Those were always healthier than the others.

But aren't there other pollinators?
Edit: I've heard that if "all bees disappeared" then not much would change except the honey industry
The Manan J
Yeah but bees are the most efficient pollinator, their pollination is more effective than other insects and a lot of plants are already specially adapted to be pollinated by bees.
I just saw a bee pollinate a flower, in BLPadang we dont get much bee's
Simple answers bees have "numbers"
Most crops humans eat, like wheat and rice, are wind pollinated, thus for short term survival humans could potentially survive without pollinating insects (mid term survival less clear).
If nothing pollinates flowers we'll lose a huge portion of our crops. Especially fruits and vegetables. Allot of those need bees to pollinate them. You could use things like wasps that are more aggressive but they don't pollinate as efficiently as bees do.
love those bees!!! I planted a bunch of bee friendly flowers over the summer
The diversity sure plays a big role, my professor always thought us about how important it's to keep the diversity and how it makes it more efficient for us. No need for synthesic chemical role when there is diversity, it's just how we make use of it so it get efficient for us
Best video

Minute earth! You are the best I love your videos!
Befor watching video i comment and like!! I love ur vids cuz they teach so much and are good made!!! ❤😄
Aren’t Bees an invasive species?
No , they aren't
Honey bees, yes.
So are most of the crops they pollinate. We created a high artificial density of flowering plants that need a matching high artificial density of pollinators, no natural system is going to provide such an unbalanced supply. It is just like the matter of fertilizers, nature doesn't need artificial fertilizers, but we need when we decide to mass produce foods.
SECOND BABY WOOO
Good job!!!!!I love this plane.
So... build all new beehives to have rough surfaces? To the point where every square centimetre is covered in Propolis? Maybe even a little entry tunnel covered in the stuff as a first line of defence. Or just synthesise it to spray in the hive.
Research shows that environment is better off without Honey bees(not other types of bees) because they result in population decrease in other helpful insects like moths and butterflies.
🙄

+MrKukurykpl I think he was just talking about honey bees which originated from the Old World. There are plenty of indigenous (if less famous) North American species of bees.
Bee population aren’t dropping
And bees are HIGHLY INVASIVE in the US
Yes thanks university of Minnesota!
This rlly makes me happy
Whoa, such a simple solution!
We can also lower pesticide usage or make sure the ingredients arent like posion to bees
How to save the bees:
1. Give different kinds of flowers, for a variation in their diet (helps with their health)
2. Dont use those deadly pesticides and insecticides anymore! Find another way, it kills the bees as well
3. Make their hives rougher
Propolis is also used to treat sore throat
Humans are at the level in the food chain where literaly the entire ecosystem is their sphere of consumption.
So, we humans have to take care of and shape the ecosystem in order to sustain us.
Its like the entire world is our backyard garden, that feeds us with home grown vegies and salads.
But its the backyard garden literaly all of humanity relies on in order to survive.

0:19 *looks at money*. WAOH~
Something missing is that North America doesn't really have all the bees it needs, and container loads of hives are imported from Australia where their food is deceasing into winter (Because of the opposite seasons and many native Australian plants are pollinated by birds). It is a one way trip because Australia is free of Varroa mites so importing bees into Australia is banned.
It is because of deforestation. In Nepal, Honee bee hunters never ever cut the trees. They have been taking out the honey from same hives on for hundreds of years.
Why is there a smiley face on the beehive?
There was a smile on the wood plank.
