This is another case of a large creature being impractical due to the square/cube law - trying to deal with all of those issues as a large creature (a hypothetical human vampire) is not realistic when using the strategies of the other insects and animals that consume blood.

I’ve always rationalized that fictional vampires don’t _actually_ metabolize blood as food for a living (or rather undying), but rather use it’s “magical spiritual energy” as sustenance. More as lifeblood rather than plasma and red cells. It would be hilarious tho to imagine a sparkly twilight vampire peeing all day all the time.

While crazy conspiracy theorists have come up with irrational and baseless accusations against Gates, there are plenty of real reasons for dismissing his so-called philanthropy.
I understand that SciShow needs money, but so people know. Bill Gates spent half a billion dollars, that's $500 million, just in the decade up to 2015, to develop a numerical rating system for teachers. They then admitted they failed, but not before the measures have been almost universally adopted across educational systems in the whole country. Untold thousands of schools were shut down and teachers laid off or denigrated on the likes of New York Post. Now, every state is short of teachers, which has never happened before, and the pipeline for teaching certification programs is at historic lows. Youth mental health is at all time low, as well (although there are other causes there obviously, like social media).
Another example of Gates' influence is on the AstraZeneca Covid vaccine. Oxford University was about to license their vaccine for free, especially to poor countries. Gates doesn’t like purely public enterprises, so his foundation convinced the uni to partner with the pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca to market the vaccine. AZ had little vaccine experience and made a mess of the trials, so much so that its vaccine’s still not approved by the FDA (disclosure: I’m one of the first trial participants in the US). And many countries found its license fees prohibitively expensive.
If you’re still appreciative of Gates, look up his name with Jeffrey Epstein, and about his divorce and trips.

My favorite version of a vampire is from The Rhesus Chart by Charles Stross. It's a Lovecraftian cosmic horror setting (complex math = ritual magic) where vampires don't actually gain anything from the blood, it's just used as a sympathetic link to the victim for an extra-dimension "virus" to piggyback off of. The virus "eats" computational energy (ie brain matter) and grants what we think of as traditional vampire powers (long life, strength, persuasion, glamour,...). If the vampire doesn't "feed," and there's no link to another victim, they become the victim to their own virus.

The part at the one minute 20 second Mark about either being able to store all the excess water or get rid of it somehow, I've only seen one book that I can remember that actually dealt with that. I think it was the Generation V series. They took a page out of the vampire bat and after drinking a pint of blood, the vampire in question would get rid of the excess water in exactly the same way. Makes vampirism a whole lot less romantic that's for sure.

Hmm, well the issue with nutrients could be resolved by the vampire metabolism, which is basically one of a dead human, so we can assume that he produces almost no heat and his cells division is almost non-existing unless he heals. They also sleep for long periods of time, and since we don't know if they dream, maybe their basically in a coma consuming as less brain power as possible. Also, their saliva might work like some kind of poison that make your cells split out their contents into the blood, transforming you into a vampire and making your blood more nutrient at the same time.

Additionally, something in their anti-coagulating saliva is infectious and passes along the vampire curse or "Vampirc Sanguinitis" as the Elder Scrolls would term the disease. Either way, I don't think MinuteEarth is giving the full credit to the highly evolved and mystical processes vampires have developed for dealing with their curse.

The video did addressed it and said it would be nice to see more fictional vampires having adaptations for those problems.
Ideas like saliva that keep the blood flowing and even prevent the one being bitten from feeling pain and really good immunity to germs is already being used. In some works of fiction vampires don't feed exclusively on blood and therefore need much less of it which makes it easier to handle the extra water and iron.
I would say that I would love to see works of fiction were they also have bigger bladders to hold more water or that they don't drink water at all as they get enough from blood.
It would be also fun to explore what purpose would blood play in their diet.
The best incarnation of this would also try to weave those adaptations with symbolism and vampire folklore which can create a very interesting version of a vampire and I think it's fun to look at all those 'problems' as opportunity for creative writing. Obviously, if you don't want it to be too much about science you can simply not deal with vampires from this perspective, fantasy don't have to be scientifically sound.

Most vampires stories I know of have their vampires have lower body temperature, so they wouldn't waste as much energy on homeostasis, plus the lower temperature already means a lower metabolic rate. So they don't need as many calories as a normal human would.
Then there are the most interesting ones, which treat a vampire's craving for blood less like them being hungry for food and more like a drug addiction. Most vampires are immortal, after all, so they don't really need the food, but they do have the addiction, which puts an interesting spin on things.

Love the concept! You’ve got some logical problems going on. You’re making assumptions about how these nonhuman mythical things function and what kind of energy an immortal shapechanger that can control the minds of humans would require.
I think you should use the fiction as a foundation and build assumptions on the other systems. Like the fact that a vampire may need naturally created anticoagulants available for them to feed.
Maybe it isn’t that they need phenomenal amounts of blood for nutrients. Maybe it’s that they just don’t require so many nutrients. Do they breathe? They don’t have a heartbeat. Sounds like a lot of calorie burning activities that don’t happen.
Would be fair to wonder how nutrients move through their body without a heartbeat. But, they can turn into fog ….. and still think.

I returned to this video with what is basically a shower thought (I wasn't in the shower but it's still exactly like one you may see in places like Reddit) that resulted in a theory I thought of in which, what if vampires/vampirism was actually a fungi?
As I was looking back at this video and how it puts logic into how vampires would get sustenance, I was thinking that, since blood has little to no nutrition (but still *some,* ) and that *blood is mostly just water,* and since you don't ever see vampires being comically bloated and/or peeing their pants (or peeing in general,) I began to contemplate if vampires were actually a plant. But then wait, no.. Vampires hate the sun and plants think anything but that, and plants can't turn people into more plants.. *Or is that really true?*
That's when I remembered about mushrooms/fungi; a large quantity hate sunlight, and there's also ones - well, more of all one that's somewhat infamous for it - that turns small insects into zombies for it's own benefit. Therefore, vampirism could be a zombifying/parasitic fungi that keeps it's victims (somewhat) alive (which adds onto vampires' supposed immortality in most vampire genres) in order for the fungus to stay alive via blood consumption and spread. Except, since humans have extremely complex minds unlike the ants the real-life counterpart fungus tends to prey on, they aren't completely under it's control.
So basically, if someone starts another pandemic and it just so happens to be of vampiric properties, it's probably someone who ate something stupid again, this time a mushroom instead of a bat.. lol

Genuinely thought this would talk about the 'other' major issues with vampires, being their innumerable weaknesses and rules. Not being able to cross over running water must be a nightmare with all this modern plumbing (Yes, it counts. They can't cross over rivers via bridges, or areas with underground rivers, so active plumbing should also apply). Silver and Gold are both used in a lot of modern electronics, so a vampire would find themselves either very outdated, or constantly in a weakened state due to proximity. Most annoying of all is how nowadays most activities take place within enclosed spaces, in which vampires need to be invited into, which is hard when most don't have a greeter. The jury is undecided on automated doors though.
Also wanting to clear up some common misconceptions. Sunlight doesn't actually burn them. Just removes their vampiric powers and leaves them drained and weak until they're in the shade. They do sunburn easily though due to this lack of exposure and pale white skin.
And the 'no reflections' is actually because mirrors back then used silver. Their reflections appear in any other substance. This is also why they wouldn't show up in photographs at the time either, due to old fashioned cameras using silver nitrate

The point was to look at the biological feasibility of the common vampire trope and learn about how actual blood-feeding species solved the issues that lifestyle raises. Those lore points, if taken into consideration, open much different cans of worms. How would "immortality" manifest itself (extremely slow metabolism? extensive DNA repair? all the stories just lazily make it magic) since there is no such thing in biology as simple immortality, how their enthralling powers even work, etc. All very interesting questions leading to other real-life examples, I am sure, but quite off-topic given the subject was specifically the issues of a blood-only diet.

I get it, getting nutrients from blood is hard, but I have an ACTUAL SCAR from a tick.
    I don't know how.
I also get scabs over wounds really fast, but don't grow skin there for a really long time.
    I hate this.

The vampire to the left is likely meant to be Dracula, and the one to the right has “Twilight”-style sparkles, but who are the two vampires in the middle?
