I have been a Dream Theater fan for decades, but realized my true interest was in Portnoy. I have followed (and loved) everything he's done since he left. The lineup in SoA is amazing. I was familiar with everyone except Bumblefoot, and now I have a new guitarist to follow.
Bumble is a BEAST of a player. Check out Marco Sfogli absolutely killing it on the Labrie solo records Static Impulse and Elements of Persuasion. Real REAL good...and heavy...and quite Petrucciesqe
The only record that I had heard with Bumblefoot before this was Chinese Democracy by Guns N' Roses, which I like, but he seems to appear so much more here.

So fucking cool to see Billy playing some heavy progressive like this! Saw him on stage a couple of months ago with Mr. Big and he was a total beast! I love seeing Billy outside of Hard Rock, he is a musician that can play anything from Hard Rock to Progressive easily. So much musicality in this guy! Also a very cool person! Go Billy!
This isn't a Dream Theater versus Sons of Apollo post - I've been there, done that, and realized that I wrote a ridiculous number of words only to come to the realization that people are going to have their opinions and that Dream Theater diehards are having a hard time seeing the forest for the trees. I'll leave it at that. This album isn't in any way a Dream Theater revenge album nor is it a Portnoy/Sherinian extension of DT. Sons of Apollo stands on it's own and to top it all off, it is a breath of fresh air in a genre of music that desperately needs a breath of fresh air. The only thing "Dream Theater" about this album is that two guys who both happened to be in the band for various stretches of time comprise the band and are the creative directors. For me in the year 2017, this was the most anticipated music release. First, because it's Mike Portnoy and he still remains my favorite drummer of all time. Second, because it is helping to bring to the masses two very underappreciated musicians in Jeff Scott Soto and Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal. I've loved Jeff Scott Soto's work ever since I heard him on the "Rock Star" movie soundtrack back in about 1999. I knew of Bubblefoot because someone played his solo work for me and because he is/was a part of Art of Anarchy, another great "supergroup". Bumblefoot is so underappreciated. I'd find his double neck guitars to be ridiculous if he didn't use them but he does, so I actually think that it is cool. Say whatever you want, but at least those two necks aren't there just for decoration. As for Mike Portnoy and Derek Sherinian, it is as if both of these guys never lost a beat from they last recorded together over 20 years ago. I appreciate Jordan Rudess and his abilities, but I also respect Derek's play and I really forgot how much I loved that "power lead" sound he developed just prior to recording "Falling Into Infinity" with Dream Theater. This album has something that a lot of progressive metal music has lacked in the past few years, songwriting. We all know these incredible musicians can play their instruments as most of the listeners are themselves musicians so we can appreciate their abilities, but when these bands come together they make incredible music but they fail to write actual songs. These songs are as catchy and are as well written as you're going to find in this genre of music (sticking the prog metal genre, not including bands like Kansas, Genesis, Yes and Rush who were/are excellent songwriters in addition to being good players). I respect the heck out of people who can really play their instruments but I have even more respect for the players who are good songwriters in addition to being great musicians. This is a great album - from the opening track to the last. I haven't been able to say that about any band's release since the Arch/Matheos Sympathetic Resonance album released in 2011. Not that anyone gives a shit, but I give a 96/100.
This band has an awesome sound, perfect mix of vocals, guitars, keys, bass, n drums. Derek's playing is insane, Portnoy's drumming slams! This in one of the best new bands out there, one that gets the job without twerking or rapping!
I can't stop listening to this album. Especially the first half. I love how the bridges turn into awesome jams that shows off how epic each member is. Well done!
Always the best sounding kits. He knows how to engineer his drums and its always shown. Kit is full and alive with a snare that just blends so nicely with heavy music.
I think the album is great. It's not like Dream Theater, it's a unic progressive metal album. instrumental sequences and easy-to-understand choruses are well balanced. The old and new style is mixed well.
