It shows how your moral compass really does point true north. I have no idea how Toyota sells it with a NASA or SCCA membership in the US, yet it starves oil down to about 1.2bar on track in right handers. I question how it made it past the engineers in testing. I saw Killer B did some testing thinking it was the oil pickup and pan but it ended up making no difference. Kinda makes me think even something extreme like a dry sump might not fix the issue because it's obviously from oil pooling somewhere. I am curious what you guys do to alleviate problem because it's clearly something internal. In all seriousness if you figure it out you will help a lot of GR86 owners out. Keep your chin up and keep putting out awesome content.
I heard that the car in the gr cup overfill their engine with 1l of oil before the race. I mean you could read it everywhere that the engine has a trouble with oil pressure. And quite a few people are searching for solutions
@@steffenkawa8374I doubt they overfill with 1l, you’d be looking at broken/bent con rod and knackered rings over filling by that much. I overfilled a Ford CVH engine once with 1/2l too much and it shagged the rings requiring new rings and a rebuild.

The headlights of modern cars are ridiculously expensive! This car had 1800 EUR headlight (each) and some BMW models have headlights that cost 3000+ EUR each.
Sorry to hear about your issue. My GR86 failed too. I heard a split second of dry running on track, standard car & oem oil, level checked that morning (close to max), long right hand bend, 118°C oil temperature, reasonably high RPM (above 5000). Then perhaps 50 miles of gentle road driving later I started to hear the unmistakable 'tuk tuk tuk' sound of a big end bearing going bad. You won't read about mine in any statistics, it was taken care of by Toyota, but it seems too easy to do. As you say, the issue of oil pooling in the heads seems to be very well known with Subaru Sti owners who track their cars. Dry sump conversion appears to be the final solution. Good luck with it, I'm going back to flat-6 with factory dry sump.
It's really a non-issue unless you plan on pushing the car to its limits on track regularly. For a street car that sees occasional moderate track use it IS a fantastically fun car, and while the whole oil pressure thing is sometimes at the back of my mind you have to be consistently pulling pro-level lateral Gs for an extended period of time for it to be a problem and I know I'm not that good of a driver nor are 99.9% of GR86 drivers. It's disappointing that Toyota didn't design their own inline 4 for this platform which was my biggest complaint about the previous gen but I'm not surprised they didn't and honestly for a mostly street driven car the fact that the engine is the same engine that subaru throws at all their economy cars is probably a good thing in terms of parts availability, cost and reliability (not on track ofc)

Yes Misha, you got to do some laps before giving it away! The new owner would be able to see their car on the legendary Nürburgring! What an extra gift, Cheers!
currently there's some sort of solution that you can get away with the oil starvation, which is to overfill the engine oil for 1 Quart, this does prevent big oil pressure lost ( still get 30-40 ish which is not perfect but ok) but you do need to drain the 1 Quart back when you're off the track, 1 Quart overfill do make a bubbling issue. but on track, it is fine
You probably will want a Baxter Performance anti-oil drain adapter. This prevents the filter from emptying when shut off (the filter drains in 30 seconds or so). No more dry starts. It also has a schrader valve in the housing so you can blow out the RVT and get more of the oil out. Thanks for the content!!
Still have the same underpinning issue of oil starvation in high G-force corner... Just with slightly lesser risk because the turbo version rev slightly lower... Inhereted problem way back into EJ series engine and still not solved in FA series modern iteration...
Idling a (normal) car to "warm it up" is bad for any engine. Unless its tens of degrees below 0, you want to start the engine, let it idle for at most as long as it takes the AC to defog the inside of the windscreen, and then take off calmly. Idling a cold engine for a "long" time does nothing but wear the bearings prematurely. Just FYI.
Can we please get a list with all the mods done? In many videos you, show the parts shortly, if at all. I'd like to upgrade my gr this year and having a trusted source for good parts would be greatly appreciated
Hi, GR86 owner here, have a few questions for you: What grade oil were you running? Do you know about the oil cooler causing a pressure drop unless setup in a specific way? Are you ‘overfilling’ the oil? Are you logging oil temp & pressure on track?
If they didn't put a different oil pan on, it was probably the oversealous silicon used as a gasket from the factory, and the pickup tube gets clogged.
'couple other mods' few months later: Good morning , comrades! Here we have LS swapped, twin turbo, rocket fuel GT86. Cause we the decided its something GT86 really needs.

Ah yes, the classic Subaru 2.4l "don't turn right" problem. This gen GR86 and Subaru BRZ would have been great cars if they could actually be tracked (like all the advertising clearly shows). Seen a couple of examples where people sold the car because they knew it was a ticking timebomb if it was actually driven aggressively with stickier tires.
Its actually been every subaru boxer engine EVER. People just dont talk about the others. These cars see it more because they are the only real track car they have ever made. Hello Misha! I’m too interested in that HKS kit as I was thinking about this kit for my car as well or maybe when I blow my engine about full HKS engine. How much different does it make to the engine reliability, what exactly does change etc.? Thanks!
Actually, since the Oil pressure drops a lot on High G right hand corners, a 5w-40 oil would actually be worse, and most certainly cause the engine to blow, since a thicker oil would take way more time to go back and lubricate the engine. Trust me on this one, never go higher than 5w-30. These engines are not made to support thicker oils, which in almost all cases of engine blows, the owners were using a thicker oil such as 5w-40.
I hope Subaru/Toyota stands behind their product and fix it. It was made with trackuse in mind in a modern package, so for it to not last or hold up doing this, is a 100% let down by the manufacturer.
Never ..... never . There were problems on the 2.5l turbo and naturally aspirated, from the first generation until today....they have not fixed the problem. They won't do it on this engine.... Afterwards, even Porsche did the same thing, on the 996/997 and even on the current bodies, with certain engines which have much worse problems
They're not supporting owners though. It's a real negative for a lot of potential buyers who would love to support Toyota and Subaru for making such a car, but expect that support to be a two-way thing. But if a massive company simply says 'no', what is the average owner supposed to do? You can't sue them, or you could but what are the chances of succeeding without bankrupting yourself first?
Atleast you'll have new toys to play with on the car! I don't get why headlights have gotten so expensive. Heard the same pricing on my niece's Q7 headlight, they ended up just getting a newer car😂

Oil cooler, excellent quality oil and a LOT of oil changes would keep you out of trouble. This should be standard procedure for any performance car that's used btw. First thing I did to my track car and it never over heats or has old oil/filter.
1200 for the barrier and 390 for recovery just goes to show they definitely take advantage of tourists as Lenz charged me 550 & I was charged almost 4000 for 2 sections or barrier that really makes me sad that they do that take advantage of people who are having a bad time as it is

It also has a schrader valve in the housing so you can blow out the RVT and get more of the oil out. Thanks for the content!!
I'm glad you are fixing it properly. I can't wait to hopefully win it!
Its now even more sorted, the new owner is going to be so lucky!
Maybe a full video on the build of the HKS engine?
Happy holidays!
before i watch im guessing silicone from the oil pan blew up the motor. needs a gasket but the oem is sloppy rtv
This engine has oil pressure problems when you turn to the right. You need an oil pressure accumulator. No oil baffle seems to correct the issue.
This is exactly why I got the new WRX over the BRZ, really unfortunate that the NA FA24 motor has oil starvation issues in the track.
Just FYI.
You are a genuinely good man Misha, respect sir !
First, I didn't like the car so much. But then I started liking it more and more. It is a great car with great modifications.
thank you for posting about this, I own a 22 BRZ - please update with any relevant info for what caused the blown engine.
There's a TÜV certified turbo kit by HKS in germany and Switzerland so I guess it's possible but there's no reason for it at this point...
Honestly i don't think it's even worth spending money on this engine anyway
There isnt much more to happen Misha, what a dream of a car completely rebuilt (dat HKS stroker) reliable and adjustable car... Lucky Winner
Can we please get a list with all the mods done? In many videos you, show the parts shortly, if at all.
I'd like to upgrade my gr this year and having a trusted source for good parts would be greatly appreciated
Hi, GR86 owner here, have a few questions for you:
What grade oil were you running?
Do you know about the oil cooler causing a pressure drop unless setup in a specific way?
Are you ‘overfilling’ the oil?
Are you logging oil temp & pressure on track?
If they didn't put a different oil pan on, it was probably the oversealous silicon used as a gasket from the factory, and the pickup tube gets clogged.
@@williamahrens5737 RTV makes no difference with this issue. They put an baffle on and cleaned out the RTV while doing so.
@alexanderlorenz6147 I was unaware they had done that already, thanks for letting me know. 👍
IIRC they were running a XW40 oil. The oil cooler causes a pressure drop, which is compensated by the higher viscosity due to lower temp.
O/40w redline with oil cooler 0,5lt overfilled
Im excited, good idea to make at least a rebuilt/tuning content series out of the broken giveaway track car.
GR Yaris has the Oil Pressure Problem as well while driven hardly…
'couple other mods'
few months later: Good morning , comrades! Here we have LS swapped, twin turbo, rocket fuel GT86. Cause we the decided its something GT86 really needs.
It would be sick to see you fit a GR corolla engine in there! Would be great and unique
Actually that's a very good idea! because the boxer whatever you do! it'll have that oil issue! i hope someone picks up your idea & apply it bet it'll work superb lol
@@zf8496 you could just get an f20 turbo in there, better option than a 3cyl
the biggest mod you need to do in that car is the oil supply.
yeah oil starvation at speed during high g forces have killed a bunch of those things it seems.
when bad luck hits you hard :( damn... what a bummer
Did you check the oil sump? I think a rubber trap door came loose and clogged the pick up.
No .
They had anticipated and controlled everything beforehand.
This is a known problem on this engine...
@@THESHADOW97139 I know thats a known problem because i own an GR86. But baffles with rubber trap doors tend to fail and get stuck in the pickups resulting in no oil presure.
@@THESHADOW97139 Tell me you don't know anything without telling me.
@@alexanderlorenz6147 It would be a funny coincidence... especially on new equipment.
This kind of thing would happen on poor quality equipment and with a lot of kilometers... stock on m3, I don't remember hearing this problem.
@@VinRZ 🤔😮💨
Yeah.. I was interested in the those cars except the Subie engines. Always seemed like a big mistake by Toyota to do that. Plus, the engine is just severely underpowered. Toyota should have just put their own drivetrain in that car.
ooof didnt expect that! that's about half the new price of a new GR86 in Germany! BMW prices.. auchies :O
(but in NL 75k for a new GR86.. it could be worse ;) )
Out of curiosity, roughly what mileage is on the engine?
6k
5256km 7:04.
That's a lot of damage!
Wrx\sti isnt a track car, sorry fanboys.
The issue is also almost entirely eliminated by running an extra 1\2 to 3\4qt of oil. Its been proven by data logs of many track rats.

This does not seem to work on this engine.... many are monitoring and doing various tests, to find a solution
Loved that you told us about the new Nangkangs.. CR-S supose to be slight better than the insane AR-1's
Cool car... GR us awsome as in Toyota..
Hmm Misha, you mention that the stroker kit from HKS, aside from extending capacity, helps in a way with oiling issue - how so? I was not aware it was helping with it at all? Of course the internals will be stronger (hopefully), however I am not sure if it alleviates this issue at all?
I am asking as I also have gr86 and tracking it is a little stressful with oiling issues :P
Ohh bugger, ive just got to the engine bit 😏
a dry sump and some oversized cooling to keep the engine temp below 80C could be ok I guess.
They already have a sump on
@@HazyTown01 No they don't, you would see an Accumulator Sump's piping going straight to the block oil galley. Don't trust everything internet tells you, look with your eyes.
Oh god i JUST asked you on another video about the oil pressure on this car...
I'm so in love with the Toyota GR86 (such a perfect car!
TRIED THE NANKANG CRS, on my channel driving a lotus cup, it is better than cup 2
Dang it sounded like it had turbo flutter 😮
I really enjoy these mechanical a bit videos
The car seems to be cursed.
Yeah, now it certainly seems so!
Thank you so much misha for this content very interesting! Thank to your "mecanic guy's" for this explications ;)
The car did it's job it survived the crash and yes the motor popped but only means you can swap it out for a different one
Killer b motorsports maj
Ke oil pan with bafflea and oil pickup which it sounds like is rhe issue which is known in subaru engines for track type use may be the anawer
is the "oil-problem" fixed with the 2023 models?
Wow the blue suspension kinematics…
Hello Misha!
I’m too interested in that HKS kit as I was thinking about this kit for my car as well or maybe when I blow my engine about full HKS engine. How much different does it make to the engine reliability, what exactly does change etc.? Thanks!
are these using the 0w20 oil? if so putting 5w40 would help keep the bearings separated from the crank
I believe they’re using w40 or above.
@@eledgy yes .
But the problem does not come from the oil, but from the design of the lubrication circuit
@@THESHADOW97139so they should recall and find a solution for it
Actually, since the Oil pressure drops a lot on High G right hand corners, a 5w-40 oil would actually be worse, and most certainly cause the engine to blow, since a thicker oil would take way more time to go back and lubricate the engine. Trust me on this one, never go higher than 5w-30. These engines are not made to support thicker oils, which in almost all cases of engine blows, the owners were using a thicker oil such as 5w-40.
Wordt het "drie maal is scheepsrecht" met het weggeven van de GR86?
Happy holidays!
Could you add an Accusump as a buffer to supply oil for the short periods of Right cornering?
ua-cam.com/video/sxqrDCPaZUQ/v-deo.html.
Was considering getting this GR86 or the Supra, sounds like its gonna be a Supra...
Atleast you'll have new toys to play with on the car!
I don't get why headlights have gotten so expensive. Heard the same pricing on my niece's Q7 headlight, they ended up just getting a newer car😂
The usual subaru engine issue with oil starvation at high G-force corner...
I’ve got a gr86 on order this oil issue is getting me edgy I’m just faulting the car and weekend mountain runs no track days. For those with more knowledge than myself on this issue I’d love to hear your thoughts please
Oil cooler, excellent quality oil and a LOT of oil changes would keep you out of trouble.
This should be standard procedure for any performance car that's used btw.
First thing I did to my track car and it never over heats or has old oil/filter.
@@Diac13 how many oil changes would you say? Every 1000 km or I’m not sure
@Akash-mq6ov that would be excessive. I would do at like 5000km or every year. If you do tracking I would do it after every track day.
I appreciate the help mate thanks@@Diac13
Put a g16e-gts (yaris engine) in that bad boy. Easy 400+HP capable + 150 lbs lighter than the fa24.
Subaru engines are well known for jumping timing in an accident while the engine is running.....and then there is the junk oil pickup
Headache after headache, hopefully yore next project won't be as stressful
Not surprised the engine blew up on this car as it happened to a lot of people using this for tracking
It broke my heart to sell my GR86 for only a year. It’s just I don’t want to deal with engine issues with no peace of mind from Toyota.
1200 for the barrier and 390 for recovery just goes to show they definitely take advantage of tourists as Lenz charged me 550 & I was charged almost 4000 for 2 sections or barrier that really makes me sad that they do that take advantage of people who are having a bad time as it is
Sounds like you're keeping the car ;)
When you google "GR86 engine" you get hundreds of sites how there are Oil pressure problems before you even find a spec sheet.
I'm *surprised pikachu face" about everyone that is *surprised pikachu face* when they blow their Subaru boxer.
Take your time Misha as long as I win it no stress with the deadlines 😊
Oil starvation? If so sue toyota.
Yes, this engine has oil starvation problems. Lots of youtube videos discussing the problem. Must install an oil pressure accumulator.
@@rodsilva80 I agree, but it is not a customer duty to install additional systems to prevent engine damage. It is manufacturer fault. Misha should try to warantee claim. New car or money back.
@@ramptus82 they installed an oil cooler and oil sump, imo there is no way warranty is not voided with all that
How is Toyota still killing cars with oil starvation over 20 years later? And people laugh that the 400z still has fuel delivery issues.
It's a Subaru engine.
Thats why youtubers dont drive the giveaway cars so they dont break on them.
The 86 strikes again... these engines just don't like keeping the oil in place lmao
Love ur coment.. life happens. At least ur honest about it and share the news on the people who is xited to might win it., merry xmas Micha
