What would be really sneaky is for each attacker to put like 2 units at the back door so that no one army is obviously suspicious. Never having played this game, I have no idea if that is even possible.
Imagine real battle where thousands of troops fight each other for dear life and than unit of 100 men stands for couple of minutes on one point and they say "Now we captured the entire town". So everybody just stop fighting and defenders admit defeat just because some random point inside the city was captured.
You are seeing this with a bird eye view point. Imagine yourself as one of the defenders. You are fighting enemy at the front while you realized hundred of them enemy coming out from behind. You cant see the whole picture. You may see this as the city has fallen. You are more prone to surrender than fight to death at this point since you cant exactly know the real situation cause you wont have much time to watch the end of the line of flanking enemy to know the exact number.
@@RG-hx8uc Yeah if you are watching all your friends die and are in the middle of a difficult battle, but then you look behind you and there are hundreds of enemies it would be extremely demoralizing as you would probably think that the enemy really has taken the city somehow without you even knowing it.
this is the law of probability at it's best : the less likely your opponent is to use this tactic, the less you're likely to prepare a counter to it. The backdoor tactic isn't used often because it doesn't usually work, but because it's uncommon people don't expect it. As people don't expect it, they don't prepare for it. And thus, as they didn't prepare for it, it worked.
If we replace "cheesy" with "dishonorable" every time we lose a battle and try to justify ourselves , i think we would basicaly sound like every general in history who did the same. The French probably thought mud+longbows was cheesy too lol.
This video actually helped me win. I was playing a 2v2 on this map and one of the opponents was Suebi. I remembered this video but kind of brushed it off but i placed shield bearers (Seleucid) on the road towards that gate. While me and my team are defending the walls, I get a message that my troops are breaking and i look and see the entire Suebi army running to the point. A favorite thing i do is place my best troops on the point so i manage to quickly put my pikemen into phalanx, my general (Peltast) and another royal peltast into shield wall but they get surrounded and killed but I brought enough time for my team mate and my army to rush back to the point
I imagine like a suspicious influx of Iberian fishermen and artisans coming into Carthage months before the siege and then when the faitfull day comes, they reveal why they all congregated around that little worthless beach area and why they were such poor craftsmen and traders.
I really like your videos Apollo, it's a mix between entertainment and "consulting" :-) it's almost like watching a sport game with an enthusiastic moderator xD #loveit
You had an older video where somebody did this in a smaler paste That was brilliant and very hard to counter But when the defenders dont notice a complete army missing than its their own fault and they can really not blame anyone else
Great video and fun to watch. Trouble is, I don't agree this is a "cheese" tactic - it was entirely your opponents' fault for leaving that entrance wide open. You snooze, you lose! Well played!
On that map there are two choke points near the center flag. Put EVERYTHING facing those choke points, and forget about defending the walls. Preferably with a wall of pikes or shields and archers stacked to hell behind them. You can hold hold off forces 2 to 3 times your size that way. Most maps are the same-- use the choke points close to the flag and feck the walls.
That amazing pixalated Apollo keep up the greatvwork! Your vids have gotten me through some rough times! If I ever need a laugh or need to get my mind of of things I can always watch your videos!
Great video as always I really enjoyed this cause I play sparta and Rome and I like this aggressive Sparta play I normally play them on defence after watching this I’m definitely going to start attaching as Sparta
This literally gives lord of the rings vibes. The black gate battle. They needed to get sauron to focus his attention on the battle of the gate while they snuck in the back to complete the mission.
you should share a link to their live feed recording, if they have one that it?. I would enjoy seeing and hearing more so their team being shocked and awed and panicked and frustrated or whatever not seeing this coming. lol you should look into it. love to hear what they have to say on the matter since it was done live. be cool.
I've done it a handful of times it's always really funny. Usually they leave their pikes and gens in the back and I'll kill them and then they will rush their spare units back then I become the defender.
Speaking of crossbows, it kinda bothers me a bit the Hellenistic factions don't have crossbow units. I mean the Greeks had the Gastraphetes, which basically a handheld crossbow loaded by pressing it down with your stomach, in a way more energy is acquired when loading and more powerful when fired.
No, it was the timer for the capture point to be fully captured. Once the attacking army captures the town center, a timer starts going down. You can stop the timer by recapturing the town center, but you can’t reset it
Hiding units during a siege isn't too clever. But the way you had to hide it from your stream is so cool it's like you actually had spies and you had to keep a strategy top secret like a real general would. Awesome
If you're not expecting the unexpected. Shouldn't the unexpected be expected. Also this video should also be uploaded to a "off brand" website for that beautiful "back door" action all of us just witnessed.
I love how the counter to this tactic is basically "Try to count to 20"
actually if you see less than 15 units with no forest, yes, ask you question x')
Or just go.. are my flanks secure.
What would be really sneaky is for each attacker to put like 2 units at the back door so that no one army is obviously suspicious. Never having played this game, I have no idea if that is even possible.

Every general in history, even modern's, will definitive go for that kind of openings
The strategy is super easily countered with three units basically. Nothing dishonourable about it just using an opening.

It wouldn’t be that much different from a normal day in Carthage, Iberians were all over the place so you wouldn’t need to hide much.

Greeks used cheese with Troy... Apollo and Co. use cheese against Carthage. Well played sir. :)
Those 3 squads of Masaesily troops decided to abandon guard duty and go to town for some fun.
I've done it a handful of times it's always really funny. Usually they leave their pikes and gens in the back and I'll kill them and then they will rush their spare units back then I become the defender.

It would be interesting to see the replay from the other side. So you can see how the defenders prepare, and exactly when the scheme is revealed.
At the end when talking about the timer, although it wasn't there, what I assume was the replay timer was down in the bottom right.
No, it was the timer for the capture point to be fully captured. Once the attacking army captures the town center, a timer starts going down. You can stop the timer by recapturing the town center, but you can’t reset it
Then tomorrow, every body will fight the main battle right there at the back door
