How many other young guys like myself were in love with the delightful J McShee, via the Pentangle's marvellous music and superb performances, during the late 60s-early 70s ?
How to create a delightful coverup of an already beautiful song, respecting the heart of the original and at the same time adding their own talent and ingenuity. It's a pleasure to learn English with this wonder. Greetings from Spain.
One of the most amazing interpretations of this song. They change it a lot, with the rhythm shift, the 7th chords and Renbourne's surprising phased guitar subtly rising over the band's acoustic instrumentation. It's a bizarre song, and, while most people play it straight, the Pentangle mine it for all it's jazzy weirdness. Brilliant.
I have many versions of this great song. I like the unforced, laid-back, effortless ambience of this. Nice man, Bert, a genuine talent too. Nothing wasted. I've been reminding myself of the man's music these past few hours and it is abundantly clear that his place in musical history has long been assured. Thanks for the music, Bert, we are all richer for your time on earth.
I continue to be absolutely staggered by this incredible group. Added to their extraordinary musicianship and cohesiveness, they're also amazingly versatile. RIP Bert, long live Pentagle.
OOh thank you, I found this as a result of a comment made on my channel, I have not heard this group in years.. I had totally forgotton about their existence.. Now I have found two wonderful songs. The childhood memories. My brother and dad used to listen to them She had a beautiful voice - sigh!!! Take me back please..
More than spontaneous this performance is deliberate and sophisticated. It appeals more to intellect than to affection. They have a touch of their own to that popular bluegrass-gospel.
@Randy marsh Thanks for your comment. I think the performance is still fascinating. It can be seen a proof of an admirable high quality of some of the groups active in the sixties.
I love this song,...the Circle for me however was broken as the Undertaker came and took my mother away,...I followed close by her trying to hold up and be brave,...but I could not hold my sorrow when they placed her in the grave,...undertaker please drive slow so I can see her one last chance,...
Did they ever record this? Although for me this will always be a Gospel song (as well as brilliantly done by the Carter Family), I really like this version. Brilliant.
Certainement la meilleure interprétation de cette chanson grâce à la voix merveilleuse de Jacqui Mc Shee, je possède le 33t original du pentagle et ne me lasse pas de l'ecouter depuis 40 ans!
My Calc teacher looked just like this woman (in 2001) - plaid skirt, long hair, sweater and all - even down to the shoes. Now I know where she got the look (^_^) Oh and I love this version of this song.
I have this on film done by a company who did a lot of great promo films in the early 70's.They also did SLade T. REx, Gilbert O'Sullivan,Dawn,Christie,The Sweet & loads more
Hmm this is one song I'd not expect from Pentangle...!This is talent, they play awesomely and she sings better than 99% of singers today. And no meat dresses necessary.
PK: Exactly. If we all enjoyed the exact same thing, we would all be listening to an extremely limited range of music. As it is, there is something for everyone. I like the country, foot-tapping, hand-clapping, feel good version. For those that like this version, I am glad it was produced. I try not to belittle another's taste in art. This is just not for me. I did listen with an open mind to a new artist. That too is a good thing.
It's the lazy, gentle way that Pentangle play...seems so effortless and fluid, with improvisational threads of genius, that raises this way above a lot of music of that era. They make you believe this music has somehow always been there, that it's part of the fabric of life, and that it'll be there long after you're gone.
People often can't appreciate the shoulders than later artists stand on! Compare what was before Jansch, Renbourne, Graham, Korner and the like. They were the "beatles" of the genre
@incongra i talked to john personally once , because pentangle always was introduced as an accoustic band and he has often to expalain about this. see all videos and bert always play accoustic, john aslo play harmonica on this track, ok peace
Terry Cox, iirc. When that wonderful band broke up he opened a bar on Majorca insted of teaming up with musicians of lower standards. That´s what I call style.
it sounds very similar, but the lyrics are different- and the vocals are different and the concept is different. I get what you mean by ripping off... i mean its virtually the same tune for large parts...but thats how music used to be made for centuries. This song itself is a cover and has been covered countless times in different ways.. Nowadays every song is monetised, instead of people just enjoying messing about with music and creating better words for tunes, there are bands having to change an A to a D so they don't get sued... or "sampling" using the exact part of a song. imagine if "my sweet lord" by george harrison never came to be... or if bob dylans "the times they are a changin" was removed from music because it copyrighted the bible... I wish people ignored big business...
To the current folk who comment! see below ! (And sorry if I come across as not happy ) But we oldies ,first time round don't need to be clever!..it is still good (saw them live) and if you can match her range or play like Bert..well done you! Try Angie!
Jacqui McShee : une voix céleste, comment ne pas tomber amoureux...! J'admire aussi une version très différente, par Richie Havens: ua-cam.com/video/tf1gMtc81CE/v-deo.html
Decided to give this band a listen because of comments by another YT'r. Picked this song because I love it, have heard it as long as I remember. For me, Jacqui McShee, has one of the greatest female voices that the U.K. has ever produced.
Second to none in her field, for me.
What a gift ❤️
Considering she's up against the likes of Annie Haslam, Maddy Pryor and Sandy Denny, that's high praise indeed. Not sure I could pick a favourite.
I think she is one of a number who are outstanding. Sandy Denny, Maddy Prior and Anne Briggs are also up there.
Have a listen also to Sandy Denny with Fairport Convention...Equal top female vocalist...
I've been listening to these guys for 45 years and they sound better than ever. The musicianship is just seamless.

This is the most beautiful version I have ever heard. The singer is absolutely fantastic. - Is it possible to fall in love by video?
Just discovered this group - cant imagine living without this now, thank you DETECTORISTS
I continue to be absolutely staggered by this incredible group. Added to their extraordinary musicianship and cohesiveness, they're also amazingly versatile. RIP Bert, long live Pentagle.
always loved the pentangle - Bert Janch and John Renbourne were my heros back then!
And Danny is still the world's best fusion standup bassist!
I had all their lp's love them to bits
OOh thank you, I found this as a result of a comment made on my channel, I have not heard this group in years.. I had totally forgotton about their existence.. Now I have found two wonderful songs. The childhood memories. My brother and dad used to listen to them

Great version. What a voice. Simply wonderful. Nuff said
very nice. I'd only hear Pentangle on the radio over the years. Thank you fawnface and UA-cam
Lovely beyond belief
i love the guitar work. its subtle but its really interesting.
the best version of this song , by far . . . .
RIP John Renbourn, as well as being a masterful guitarist of outstanding talent, you also had the most beautiful sweet voice.
Incredibly beautiful. Yes, I do tap my feet to this one.
I've not heard this cover before, thanks for posting. Simply delightful!
a beautiful song from a great group
oooh I love this

Absolutely superb. To the person who put this on UA-cam , thank you 😊
I saw them about 10 years ago in Milton Keynes, UK. Still fantastic
Great, an incredible interpretation of this classic.
J'aime..!!!!
One of my favorite videos on the internet. It's so beautiful it makes me cry. Love Pentangle 💘
Did they ever record this? Although for me this will always be a Gospel song (as well as brilliantly done by the Carter Family), I really like this version. Brilliant.
amazing
Awesome - thank you for uploading this beautiful song, so beautifully performed.
Awesome!
What a band! What a song! Thanks for posting

Fantastic version of this lovely song, and truly funereal without being a dirge.
What a bloody song!!! Loved It!
RIP John Renbourn..........
I have this on film done by a company who did a lot of great promo films in the early 70's.They also did SLade T. REx, Gilbert O'Sullivan,Dawn,Christie,The Sweet & loads more
she has an incredibly true voice
They are all STONED - hard
Great Thank you!
I have not heard this one before!
Love the drummer and one of the main guitarist! Both very handsome! :)
Carla Martin You mean Bert Jansch? Or John Renbourn? Both are Legends... look them up.
Hmm this is one song I'd not expect from Pentangle...!This is talent, they play awesomely and she sings better than 99% of singers today. And no meat dresses necessary.

If you love her voice, search out "Morgane". What a beautiful piece of music sung by McShee. I'm playing it on loop.

thanks a million .
Err first to all. Great to see and listen to :-)
superb
nicely put :thumbs up:
@boleary100 Yeah they did, it's on their album 'Reflection'. I highly recommend it
People often can't appreciate the shoulders than later artists stand on! Compare what was before Jansch, Renbourne, Graham, Korner and the like. They were the "beatles" of the genre
only every time you hear it!
Much as I love Bert Jansch (RIP) & Jacqui McShee's pleasant warblings - gotta say the Hayseed Dixie version just trumps this for sheer virtuosity
yeah, pretty swingin for country/bluegrass. really impressive.
@incongra i talked to john personally once , because pentangle always was introduced as an accoustic band and he has often to expalain about this. see all videos and bert always play accoustic, john aslo play harmonica on this track, ok peace
Proper musicians - playing graceful, ambient melodies - music today is crap!
Rest In Peace John Renbourn.
@TheJoJoSmack Danny Thompson was amazing, he played on many great albums mainly John Martyns and Nick Drakes, he was that good!
good!!!!!
Interesting version of the original Carter Family version. Nice though, the addition of drums adds something to it.
Terry Cox, iirc. When that wonderful band broke up he opened a bar on Majorca insted of teaming up with musicians of lower standards. That´s what I call style.
Thx
@edli55 thanks for some very interesting information nevertheless.
@edli55 well me never know that. Me just know bert played a lectric guitar in later career. I like renbourn a lot.
I had to search and Download 100 version of this to find only 4 version of the 1908 version and the one from Bioschock was one
Everyone looked like this in 1972!
ジャッキー・マクシーの素晴らしい歌声です。
I see where Rod Stewert has ripped Sailing off from
Stewart didn't write it

The melody for the lyrics sounds like something famous I've heard before.....'Here I am Lord'????
i think the british word is "Knackerd" - meaning they all look completely stoned here. Still, very great rendition of this song....
To the current folk who comment! see below ! (And sorry if I come across as not happy ) But we oldies ,first time round don't need to be clever!..it is still good (saw them live) and if you can match her range or play like Bert..well done you! Try Angie!
@gazzump I must ask. Who is Graham and Korner? I'm on a folk music spree and I need any wisdom i can get my hands on :)
Search Davy Graham and Alexis Korner. Davy Graham was to contemporary folk what Elvis or the Beatles were to Pop
What is this? Hypnotic drum beat and a vocal elixir to intoxicate all senses? Not tutti fruity, more like spacey gracey... cute!
Has no one noticed that they're lip-syncing? This is the recording from the "Reflection" album.
Wonder though whether the harmonica isn't a later addition.
I like this band so much, seems to me Jimmy Page was influenced by them certainly evident on some of the other songs.
2nd only to the Carter Family original.
Dear Bert,
"Limewire"
no thanks. I was actually quoting that fawnface fellow. that's why I wrote "check your inbox mate", innit? thanks for the thought tho.
@incongra bert never play wah-wah, john renbourn play all electric guitars and aslo arranged most of pentangle stuff
can anyone tells me the lyrics. thanks
Pour moi la plus belle voix US de tous les temps est celle de Patsy Cline.
" Trying to unearth more stuff from this great band and Jansch/Renbourn "
check your inbox mate .
@Bradstonian24 Shes probably 80 now, Im sure she still gives great gummers! Look her up sometime!

@Bradstonian24 u should check out there other stuff, and for the record she is mine so hands off lol jk
Then don't listen to it quickly.
:-)
The Bioshock Infinite version still seems to be the best.
Ok, I admit I'm here because of Bioshock Infinite
You're 55, making the comment of a 3 year old. After over half a century of existence, surely civility isn't such a difficult concept to grapple with?
Decided to give this band a listen because of comments by another YT'r.
Picked this song because I love it, have heard it as long as I remember. Did not want to listen to them sing something "new", because I might not like the song, which should not reflect on the singer.
On evaluation, this version of THIS song is mediocre at best.
Johnny Cash, Carter Family, most any country artist can get you out of your seat and singing with this piece.
I didnt even tap my feet to this one.
Sorry.
Ugly Woman, lovely voice
antimoron123 and how do you rate ?
0:00 - 0:35 Shit it's Sadako! Run!
Danny Thompson looks like John Malkovich.
Ugly??? No way.
It is one of the best versions. But to me it feels a little bit too slow and silent. I kinda get bored of listening to it very quickly.
