Not sure who has been noted on the video, but it's Ali Bain fiddle(L), Jay and Molly Unger on fiddle, guitar, Russ Barenberg on mando. Is that Phil Cunningham on Accordion? How old is this vid? Who else is in here? Great music, effortlessly presented!
This was one of the songs that we sang at our family reunion in West Virginia. I never paid much attention to the lyrics until my Dad died. Then I listened to this one and man did I cry. Such a beautiful version.
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is an Irish fiddler and the lead vocalist for the Irish traditional band Altan, which she co-founded with her late husband Frankie Kennedy in 1985
I have listened to many versions of this song for over 40 years and loved it. But only after my beloved Mother died in 2005 did it really register with me. It's Mothers Day in America and I miss my dear Mother more than ever. God bless you sweet Mother.
I was skiing today and played this and did the best run all month. something great about these ladies and the song. I grew up in the rockies but my blood is from those far east mountains. peace and love.
i have many friends from the east coast who are very often great musicains and storytellers this is certainly in that tradition i'm very grateful for the great music that comes out of this country!
I can't stop listening to this. I particularly enjoy grabbing my banjo and playing along. The harmony and awesome voices of these women sends tingles down my spine
I Shared the stage with Michelle Wright in Switzerland while touring with Doug Kershaw. She is not only an awesome singer but a really nice lady as well.
The circle of my family has been broken I can't wait for God" to put us together again;along with friends. Beautiful Singing young ladys; Keep it going-- 5 stars + for you ***** Thanks --
some ppl like emmtampa doesnt understand what true music is ....this is one of the best songs ever written and we should be all grateful to carter family ...
Thank you for this video. I came to it looking to have a good cry over my mother's and my daughter's passing in the last two months. Got what I came for and God Bless. His mercy and grace will be evident to us one glad morning. See y'all at the house.
Even atheists listen to this great music with pleasure. The performance is excellent. Also Bach and Händel are enjoyed by unbelievers. The religional music with high standard is universally shared.
This song was sung at my Aunt's funeral with a recording from Randy Travis. Here is a unique blend of women from the US, Canada, and Ireland. Thank you TomScotland for uploading it. I like your videos.
Why? I think it's wonderful that one piece of art/entertainment can open a door to another. Surely it's better people discover this music than not at all?
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaig is the lovely blonde singing here. she's from trad Irish Band Altan. Not only a fine singer but a great fiddler in the Donegal tradition. Loveliest smile!
I completely agree with you! I know one day I will see her again and how exciting that is! Unfortunately, we have to deal with our human emotions until then; Thank you for your reply to my comment!
Sometimes the sound of a distant piper can stir ones heart, or the peel of a distant bell ring clear and true and for a moment we take notice, yet here in song with these clear voices, they draw me back to a time when beauty was the very simplicity itself.
This helps get out the emotions that get bottled up when I think of my Aunt Emilie who died not all that long ago. The long haired woman sure looks a lot like Gweneth Paltrow. :-) All the women are wonderful singers. The band did this song justice. Thank you for that. This song has been sung by many in my family. In love, in death this song just fills the spirit with all that is needed.
Truly one of the most beautiful versions of "Circle" I've ever heard. In addition, some of the most astonishingly lovely collection of voices and harmonies as well as musicians. What a treat to listen to this just before I'm off to sleep. Guaranteed sweet dreams. Voices of angels. Thank you ladies and gentleman, what a gift.
Mairead's name is pronounced MA-RAID. She's the fiddler with the Irish group ALTAN. Her young husband is the guitar player seated on the left (name escapes). I'm pretty sure that the awesome 'cordeen player is Phil Cunningham, brother of the late Johnny Cunningham. ALTAN did a concert here in Boulder a few years back and then showed up at the pub down the street where I was fortunate enough to video them in a REAL setting. It was night to remember.
Back when my dad worked at GM, back in '01, he would sing this sometimes while cooking. I do think it was because his mother had passed the previous year, and he has always raved about her cooking.
Iris Dement's voice gives me goosebumps!
Me too.
and finally... I found someone who feels this song at the same tempo that I hear it in my head .... beautiful.
@kk99ll seen Michelle once in Calgary. beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. Great combo.
I Never hear much of Michelle Wright these days; she is an excellent singer and good looking as well. Another fine Canadian product.
This song played over and over at mom's funeral in my head.I know I will see her again. Thank you Lord. We praise You ,God.
That was you mum letting you know she was still around looking out for you darling. ..........

It's about grief, embracing it, working through it and overcoming it.

Iris is so great, she looks like a little girl when she's singing, but in a really good way. Totally pure feeling, totally honest. LOVE IT!
I¨ve heard many versions of this song. This one is, without comparison, the best I¨ve ever heard!!!
Nobody sings like Iris. The unique talent to complement the genius of the others. Nobody sounds like any of them.

Three wonderful, very distinctive, women's voices. Chills!
Mighty fine music. They were great!
Iris Dement has the props to sing with anyone. In my humble opinion she is the one out-classing the others here...
I completely agree with you! I know one day I will see her again and how exciting that is! Unfortunately, we have to deal with our human emotions until then; Thank you for your reply to my comment!
