  • I will do my best to help those in need. If your bolt is stuck in the forward position this may be beneficial. If you are unable to determine the cause of this malfunction I highly recommend visiting a trusted gunsmith.

Shoulder stock was fully collapsed when you tapped / slammed, as it should be.
This is already an unnerving thing to happen, so I’m just pointing it out for those who might not notice this and then accidentally break their stock.
    Nice video.

Hello I’m having a bit of a different problem. A Colt m4 all stock and I tried pulling back the charge handle and sure enough the bolt stays right where it is! Now I’ve built a couple of ar’s and will take it apart but am hoping that will not be necessary. Any ideas thanks for the video!

I did not know that this was called mortaring. My bolt was stuck after a LONG period of non-use. I was truly freaked out and thought I'd have to take it to a professional armorer! I wasn't aware of this great tip at the time. I was lucky that persistence won the day. My issue was that the bolt cam was sticking. Maybe insufficient lubrication? Not sure. I will remember this if it ever happens again.

My AR chambered in 300 Blackout kept getting bolt stuck with my reloaded cartridges. I found out that some brass is too thick and when you form the brass then load a bullet, it bulges the case slightly.
I had to buy an RCBS case wall trimmer to trim the wall thickness down. I also bought and used a full length gauge to make sure every reloaded cartridge met SAAMI specifications.

Mine keeps sticking in the closed, in battery position with nothing in the chamber. I have to give it a good whack on the charging handle to pull it open. What do you think that may be? Its clean and well oiled. It was sticking with the stock c/h, and i bought a raptor and its still sticking closed.

Could be the extractor but not always. Most commonly what happens is the firing pin in inserted wrong. Make sure your cam pin is out (downward position) when you insert your firing pin and then push it in and insert your cotton pin

This technique could damage your buffer tube and stock. I’ve repaired countless AR’s after using this “mortaring” technique at the class3/SOT shop I work at. Put some lube into the bolt and barrel extension. Butt of the rifle on the ground and hold the handguard where the barrel is facing away from you in the safest direction possible. DO NOT GRAB THE BARREL. Place the heal of your shoe on the left side of the charging handle (non ejection port side) and push down with your heal as if your kick starting a motorcycle or ATV. Extended charging handles can be a huge advantage using this technique. I’ve used it at the shop and other places doing………other things and it works 99/% of the time. You’ll get a lot of practice doing this if you use steel case ammo in AR’s. Hope it helps
