- AR15 Malfunctions - failure to feed/fire, failure to eject, double feed, brass over bolt, mortaring,
This video is a guide to clearing malfunctions but you really should go take a training class. LOAD YOUR RIFLE CORRECTLY, most of the time people jam their own guns. Use quality ammo and quality magazines.
Move tap rack
Type 1 Failure to feed or failure to eject
Type 2 Failure to eject
Move tap rack didn't work then look
Type 3 Double feed - remove magazine, lock bolt, charging handle forward, finger the rounds out, send bolt forward, reload
Brass over bolt - remove magazine, barrel pointed down,(1) pull back on bolt carrier with finger (2) pull back on bolt face with flat head screw driver (3) lock bolt to the rear and chop the charging handle forward, reload
Failure to extract - mortar the rifle

"2 things trying to get in one hole, which is disgusting". This statement earned my support and subscription. Well done.
Haha there’s like five other jokes I use when I teach it in class. Too dirty for UA-cam

Thanks brother I'm glad you liked it!
Shot over 1000 on a ruger 556 ar 15 then had a jam up, could not pull charging handle back or place the gun on safety, Instructor easily grabbed the charging handle and slammed the butt of the gun against the table and bullet came out. they teach you gun saftey how to stand how to shoot, reload, and which kind of ammo to use. Not once did they show us how to take care of that kind of jam up on the ar-15 rifle. People should get a class on handling jam ups by all means
Absolutely. It's sad how long I want as a Rifleman in the Marine Corps not knowing how to clear every malfunction
What was the problem causing this
It's called mortaring
First time shooting my AR today at the range and it would always jam whenever I put in a new clip and then I discovered mortaring.
Clean your weapon. I've got a Ruger556 and it jammed. Turns out the ammo quality was as guilty as my negligence in cleaning...the perfect storm. (Well, perfect spring shower at least.)
Do you guys want specific videos on each malfunction?
Sure!

All they ever taught us in basic was tap n rack. Very informative man, my biggest fear was going to clear a malfunction and the charging handle not budging. Much more confident with my rifle now, and I can’t wait to train these techniques

I swapped from old ammunition to cleaner brass and my mags suddenly would allow the brass to chamber. Then I could safely reset it after a brass over brass. This video saved me so much stress. God bless brother.

Amazing video, I'll keep this knowlegde in mind! Just had a malfunction with my AR-10 where a live round got stuck in the chamber and would not eject - from this video, I now know it was because the cartridge itself was somehow bent. So I had a live round stuck in the chamber, and the BCG refused to go back, so I couldn't eject it. I can tell you right now, I tried mortaring the dang thing to no avail, this round was not coming out no matter what. Had to bring it to a gunsmith, I told him my woes. Man got him and his bud, and they had to use a brass punch and hammer to literally punch the BCG to the rear so they could get the round out (they punched it via the face of the BCG exposed by the ejection port). The smith said it was the hardest BCG he had to unjam, as the BCG refused to move until he gave it a good strike. The gunsmith surmised the cartridge was the issue, not the BCG like I initially thought. The BCG seemed fine and operational, and the chamber seemed to be undamaged. Upon inspection, the primer had been lightly sturck, but not enough to cause it to go off. The cartridge also had the smallest knick in it, which I assumed caused just enough deformation to the brass cylinder to lodge it in the chamber - though I also suspect this knick may have been caused when I initially racked it. Bought 500 rounds of this ammo, been through maybe half of it, and this is the only issue I've had so far. This happened quite recently, and I am eager to test my gun out soon to ensure it was the round and not the rifle itself. Whatever the case, I've added a brass punch set and hammer to my kit in case such a catastrophic jam ever happens again. Hope this never happens to anyone else, but just so you know...
Hey, man. Been watching your videos for about a year now. I really appreciate the pragmatic approach you seem to take. I know your page isn’t huge right now (although being in the thousands is no small feat) but I really hope you keep making videos. I see alot of pages quit at around 5k and I hope you continue to make great content. I sincerely think you would bring plenty to the table for the community! I would be interested to see a video on stock style and design, and your thoughts on applications for them. Thanks for reading all this, if you have!

I will make that video just for you. Do you have any specific questions or talking points you would like me to cover in that video?
@@CombatArtTraining I appreciate that alot, but obviously feel free to make whatever content you want. Maybe cheek position on different stocks given the mount height? Modularity vs durability and consistency. I thought about it in the context of you using the fixed stock on one of your rifles, and I guess was mostly curious if you thought it even mattered? Either way, I look forward to seeing whatever you all put out in the future.
@@pryoriz sounds good bro, I'm actually wanting to go away from fixed stock now. I will definitely hit those points. I appreciate the comments on this video too!

Great skills and vid!! Particularly loved the "two things in one hole is disgusting" comment, and agree whole heatedly.
Hahaha I look forward to everytime I get to say that. Glad you liked the video!
Great explanation!
Took a friend shooting and they didn’t realize they had a double feed, I’m not sure if the bolt broke before or after, but the second round that fed is actually what hit the primer and fired off the round ahead of it. Glad nothing worse happened there!
Hey Ive been looking and looking to see if anyone else had this happen, my brother had just gotten an ar and he only shot it once, so I was going to take it to the range with a buddy and shoot it some. The rifle had a double feed, I cleared both rounds out of the bolt and proceeded to pull back on the charging handle and let go and it set off a round which struck a baffle, never had anything like that happen, learned it’s from a free floating firing pin that’s in all ar15s
i watched your video till the end.great video . I built my first ar 10 first round would not allow me to pull back bolt. Tried your style to clear stuck round worked great !!! I was so glad no tools had to be used to pry it out . THANKS FOR HELP
You're welcome! Glad it helped! Go take a class soon!
Man you saved the best for last " blown primer cup" getting wedged back underneath the carrier group and or under the safety . Had a case of Winchester 5.56 "White box " that had almost 20 rounds that caused this. It would cause the class to completely stop while I tried to deal with it . Learn to practice with malfunctions , it could be a game changer. G. Speight

Excellent demonstration sir . I needed a quick refresher of what to do when jamming comes to my AR15 . I was taught how to unjam the rifle in U.S. army basic training and in army units I served but it has been 11 years since I’ve handled or fired an m16 a2 . I just got me one two days ago. Thanks once again for your time and effort. Keep up the good work. Hello from Texas
Thanks for the great info !
You're welcome bro!
Good vid, the only thing I'd contest is a double feed is really easy to visually identify after it didn't go boom and racking can make the problem worse. In my humble opinion and how I do it is drop mag, which will often drop the issue ammo, rack to further clear, insert, charge.

Thank You for the video. I learned I should Buy a Scar or Bushmaster ACR.
No don't do that. SEALs will tell you scars are trash and no one actually runs ACRs enough to see malfunctions on them. AR15s are fine and easy to fix broken parts in logistically if you ever wear them out. Take a training class first. Lots of good companies like us do free gun rentals.
@@CombatArtTraining I apologize. You could not detect My sarcasim from my written comment. I'm a 10 year veteran of the Corps and 14 of NAVSPECWAR. Only some Seals don't like the Scar as issued in 7.62x51mm. Other's love it stock or modified. I have to love it and the shortened M14s we had. I also many round thru a Windam Bushmaster ACR that I run in either 5.56 or 6.8 Rem SPC and it's the only Gun I've found more Reliable than a XCR in the same two calibers. Easy availability of spare parts are nice but if I had any advice for AR15 Owners it would be get one MCX to compare it with. If I ever really need a Standard AR there will be plenty of them lying on the ground. But thank You again for Your video. It was excellent, Semper Fi Brother.

What mags are you using? Have you watched my how to properly load an AR15 video yet?
@@CombatArtTraining pmag and 1-2 less than 30 or 40.
ive had a case get stuck in the chamber once at the range. the extractor somehow slipped off the rim of the case, and the bolt was free. but i couldnt get the brass out since i was at the range and didnt have a rod on me or in my range bag. (it was a brand new gun, first time firing it, this was about the 3rd magazine) so i packed up and headed home. as soon as i got home about an hour later, i grabbed the gun and pulled the charging handle back, and the brass went flying out. it blew my mind. i thought i had made it all up for a second. lol. but the only thing i can think of is that the brass might have been defective, and the heat caused it to expand, and stick, and by the time i got home it had cooled down and just came right out. thats the only thing i can think of that happened. since then its been running perfectly fine. with no malfunctions and great ejection pattern.
Yeah it happens, even with good ammo. I always put a drop of CLP in the chamber to avoid it, that seems to work.
I've had to force my brass out before and I was scared AF. 😱
Remove the ammo from the mag and point the gun in a safe direction and mortar it or kick the charging handle back
People that don't know how to take remedial action on the AR in case of malfunction means they are not trained and/or they put the weapon together correctly.
A mi me paso eso pero descubrí que era el magazín defectuoso algo que me estuvo raro por que el AR era nuevo en ese momento 🤷♂️
Ellos causan problemas todo el tiempo
I recommend watching other videos about how to clear your malfunction.
Too many things left out in this video.
You are completely ignoring that you should always check what malfunction are you dealing with by turning your rifle the opposite way, to get a look on the ejection port.
The right way is to first do that, and then decide what to do next based on what you find out.
Your way will make many malfunctions worse than they were. You can not clear double feed or failure to extract by just tap and rack. I mean, you may, but there is a big chance you will make your situation much worse.
If you inspect that your bolt is not closed/open all the way(does not matter for what reason), you have to find cover, eject magazine, rack it hard and then insert magazine after inspecting that malfunction is cleared.
Wrong.
6:24 "if move tap rack doesn't fix it, I don't fault you on looking at it"
Double feeds get cleared by tap rack all the time, especially if you are using gravity the way I demonstrate in the video.
If you knew your rifle you would know everything about the condition of the rifle based off of what the charging handle does when you rack it and let it go. You don't.
You watch UA-cam videos and quote them, you don't have any real experience, and I guarantee you've never taken a class.
I am not quoting youtube videos, I am quoting a class. So, wrong there again.
I am not talking about thinking what went wrong after tap rack, i am clearly talking about checking first. Always check first what is going on with rifle. All ex-special forces teach it that way.
You are right that I watch a lot of videos as well, but just to compare informations from classes with those available online. But every professional always told me to check my weapon first. Always.
I have seen many malfunctions made worse because of tap racking something you should not at class all the time.
I am not talking about having your rifle turned the wrong way and causing bolt over ride, which is what you ment by "using gravity"...
I admire your answer as you are trying to debate and not just fight, but less assumptions based on nothing(because you can not know what experience I have based on one comment, and that is simply a fact) would be nice.
@@romadur290 okay so those guys who tell you to look at the chamber, what did they tell you to do in low light? Did they tell you to shine a chamber light at your chamber?
Tap rack does not make it worse with any of the malfunctions talked about in this video.
You can also mortar it with one leg but that is mostly with a collaspable stock.
Yes, another option.
@@CombatArtTraining I’ve never done it. I saw it on another video of the 8 step problem solving of why your ar is having malfunctions. Your mention of the slap and pull mostly fixes almost every malfunction
@@its_sandman2778 yeah tap rack is step 1 and if that doesn't work then you go into other stuff. Have to be careful if you do mortar it off your leg because we get retard strength under stress and you could give yourself a cramp mortaring it off your body.
I keep getting failure to extract before new round feeds out of 7.62 7.5 inch BCA upper. Do you think is a gas block issue?
Is it 7.62x39?
Great video! I've been having a lot of jams with my fairly new Sig M400 (it's about 2 months old, and about 1000 rounds through it). I've had jams since day 1, and I don't know if it is the gun, the mags, or the ammo, but it has happened with new ammo, factory reloaded, home reloaded, and 4 brands of mags. I got a new nickel BCG to see if maybe the bolt and/or carrier were doing it, but nope, more of the same. The jams almost always need to be mortared to be cleared - zero BCG/handle movement.
This is what brought me to your vid - any ideas on what may be happening or how to fix, or what to alter, or what to replace? I assumed the ammo was the problem since the majority of that 1000 rounds has been reloads, but there was about 400 rounds of new ammo with the same thing. Thanks!
Yeah try only using factory new ammo. Keep it clean. Use PMAGs. Watch my video on how to load an AR15
@@CombatArtTraining Well, I'm definitely not going to only use factory new rounds. I need to know how the gun acts when I stuff anything at all into it, and how to deal with malfunctions. Training only with perfect ideal circumstances leads to poor preparedness.
That said, it sounds like you think the reloads are the issue. That's good! Thanks!
@@brianr749 Just curious, have you checked every round that you put through it with a case gage?
Out of spec chamber? Maybe try contacting Sig.
One problem I've run into is a round fully in the chamber, and a second getting stuck partially in the magazine, too stiff to push back and into the mag, but far enough into the mag that it keeps the magazine from ejecting. I have to partially disassemble my rifle with the bolt back and fiddle with it until I can get the bullet from the mag and eject
What kind of magazine is it and how many rounds do you load in the magazine?
@@CombatArtTraining it's a Magpul, but it's a mechanical problem, not a friction thing. I can post a pic of maybe a small video in a little bit to explain better

I keep getting failure to extract before new rounds feed out of 7.62x39 7.5 inch BCA upper. Do you think it's a gas block issue
Bro those hybrid guns always have problems, I would just sell it and get an AK. Checkout my M92 videos
Hard "taps" to the bottom of an AR mag will frequently cause double feeds.

What magazine are you using when it happens?
Any advice for people in NY with fixed mags.
I'd probably get really good with a pump shotgun
I've had to mortar my new AR several times with different ammo.
Is there anything else that can cause the charging handle to get stuck aside from expanded brass stuck in the chamber? I would guess this problem is more common with reloads. Can there be anything wrong with the rifle that can cause it? It's happened with two different brands of ammo and I've only owned the gun about three months.
If you have a milspec of lower grade charging handle the charging handle can get bent but just make sure you're buying quality brass ammo
ua-cam.com/video/KHRiYWBwaiU/v-deo.html
On my ar pistol the round is stuck like a failure to feed stuck sideways and the charging handle pulls back and forward loose but the bolt is stuck with round jammed up in it idk what to do
go to a hardware store and buy a 5mm stainless steel dowel, put it down the barrel, hit it out, dont shoot yourself
Alternatively at 12:24, you can insert your middle finger through the mag well to push on the bolt face, then push the charging handle forward.
Yes
You can, but that hurts like a mother. I think I prefer CAT's method.

Did an AR pistol build getting two and three shots on a single trigger pull was told that it could have something to do with the disconnect and possibly the spring being inserted in upside down but that's not the case. Replace trigger problem still exists?? What could be causing this
Not sure, is it a milspec trigger?
@@CombatArtTraining yes it is
Upon completion of build firearm and test firing 100 rounds with no problem. Did not dimple in gas block bolt carrier would not move forward after first shot fix that problem. And then the multiple shot problem started. When checking for reset not getting one trigger is in incorrectly
