theyre not, suvs are fast boxes, they dont handle.advs handle well and dont miss on any fun of any other motorcycle.theyre basically legos, you give em proper equipment and they become whatever kind of bike you want them to be.touring sporty dirt.sure the gs is a mostly touring bike but take ktm those kind of bikes can easily leave behind hesitant riders on the street/track and can be ridden very hard on the dirt.their downsite is that theyre heavier to pick up in the dirt and mostly their really high in cost repairs, this aint a dirtbike, itll run high.touring wise theyre excellent and some of them can be proper street bikes with 17s rear front.a very skilled rider on a sport bike will be ahead of it but you throw 2 mediocre ones and theyre on equal foot
@@chrischa8974 yea I'm sure ADVs handle well too, but apart from that, what I meant was that they're utilitarian, probably have softer suspension than sport bikes, are heavy, you sit high up on them, they do well off road, and are good for long distance touring. Most of these reasons are also why so many people buy SUVs and Crossovers.

I am an ADV rider, and love it! I can go anywhere I'm man enough to point my motorcycle.( 2004 BMW 1150 GSA). It doesn't hurt to be younger and stronger while riding, But typically they're older more highly skilled riders coming from a lot of motorcycle experience. On site or off road I slay my motorcycle like a 250 dirt bike. 😎 Last year did an iron buck challenge on the interstate comfortable and fresh.
I miss cyclecruza on that cbr 600rr. Ive been looking at 600cc bikes and he helped me make the decision on getting a 2008 600 double aaaaaaaaaa. Stay cool CC.
My 2018 Suzuki v strom 650xt weights 476lbs stock wet. 60mpg, 5.2 gallon tank, comfortable, cruises on the highway just fine, and adv bikes have more storage options and capacity than touring bikes. Less than 10k brand new and I got it for 1300 off msrp, 8k new.
The secret to a heavy adv bike is don't drop it! AND TURN OFF ABS. You will be amazed what you can do on a gs1200r adventure. I have to remind myself constantly it's not my yz250! Lol
@FlamQ Dbltap you can turn ABS off for off road use on almost every adventure bike. The older tenere was the exception that I know of. It's VERY important to turn it off! Most problems you will have is with braking because the bikes are heavy. ABS on is like braking over marbles.. learn from my mistakes! Lol
"secret to a heavy adv bike is don't drop it" Thanks for the tip. Here's a tip to help with the "don't drop it" part - don't use the front brake in sand, gravel & dirt (except a little to gently assist the rear brake) Front brake makes the front tire dig in and throw the bike. Use the rear brake.
@@hacunamatata6802 correct, it's about respecting the limits set by the extra weight. Not me.. lol but I've watched videos here on YT with guys actually raging on adv bikes. They offer a BMW off road training course in SC I'd love to take one day. But you WILL drop your bike if you take it! They teach you amazing skills. I've heard nothing but good about it.
@@khakimzhanmiras 👍 even the 12 isn't that bad. They are made to be spilled. And when I was young I was told, "if you don't come off the bike you're not learning!" Haha
I like adventure bikes for commuting. Upright riding position is comfortable. I can see over most cars and quite manoeuvrable in traffic. Big tank means im not constantly filling up and the "adventure" doesn't have to be off road people tour from England to Spain on these. You can do that on any bike but the upper fairings, load carrying capacity all help to make adventure bikes a great choice.
I’ve ridden Harleys since 1980 and I am adding a dual sport for the versatility. I started off road as a kid and am back at it finally. Dual sports and Adv bikes are lighter and so much more flexible. I’ll always have a Harley in the garage I’ve got no problem parking a dual sport/adv bike next to it.
That new Africa Twin is fire. I've ridden a KTM Adventure 990 and that thing was a beast. Pulled power wheelies in third gear. Bike was basically a big dirt bike. The important thing is how they carry their weight. The KTM 790 for example has low center of gravity, so it's nimble even though it's heavier.
My DRZ400E is the light weight adventure bike. 138kg, long service intervals, bullet proof motor. you should not have got rid of your WR250R. That would have been perfect for light weight adventure riding. The tiger and African twin are two heavy for most riders off the beaten track.
I did a week-long tour around AZ on my bolt, during trip planning I literally had to bring up the satellite image and go through the routes mile by mile to see if any of them contains dirt road. After that, I traded my bolt for a Tenere right away, no regret.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure S is currently my most wanted bike. (New Africa Twin and BMW S1000XR are tempting alternatives though...) I'm strictly a road rider and just want a nice do all bike that can go fast, cruise well on the highways, and have a good time with without making my legs cramp up after trying to ride for more than an hour (which is the current issue I have with my CBR500R). So their (lackluster) off road abilities are non factors for me. KTM is supposedly adding some nice new features for the 2020 model, so I'm waiting to see if the rumours of a radar and the low slung fuel tanks are true. BMW is also supposedly updating the 1000XR for 2020, so waiting to see how that goes as well. EICMA is going to be exciting this year!!
If you are going from a CB500R to a 1290 Superadventure that is a huge jump in weight, seat height and power. Unless you are 6'4 it may be intimidating in traffic. You can rent all of these bikes and live with them for a while. see how you like them before you pull the trigger. I am a retired racer, I commute daily on a 1200 Suzuki Bandit. up until last year I was riding my CR250R off road every weekend. I got an opportunity to transport a BMW GS1200 from Long Beach Ca to Anchorage Alaska in June of last year. Before that trip my longest ride was about 9 hours to Laguna Seca which is about 500 miles away. And at the end of that 9 hrs I needed a crane to lift me off the bike. I was nervous about taking a bike on a 3500 mile one way ride. But the BMW GS is an amazing machine. It is more comfortable than driving a car. And to be in nature with all the sensations and the concentration that motorcycling demands keeps you from getting bored or dozing off like I constantly fight while driving a car long distance. I didn't go off road (was against the rental contract) but once you get in the Yukon you hit deep gravel without warning so the off road skills did come into play. That trip was so much fun I would have turned around and rode back if they let me. I really caught the bug. On my tripI saw nothing but GS's and 1290 Super Adventures. I even bumped into a couple from London on a KTM superadventure who were riding 2 up around the world and had started over a year earlier. The KTM is very capable and has a much stronger motor than the GS1200 or the 1250. But try it first.
The most important thing in considering an ADV motorcycle is comfort underneath you.. short explanation ADV: if you want to haul ass all the time KTM. If you want something perfectly able and a little softer edged the Africa twin. Triumph tiger awesome off-road, best sound. Then BMW if you have lots of money and want everything.
@@chickentube2229 I've got a 990 and 690 that have been rock solid. Know other people with ktms and have been reliable. Of course they are not as reliable as honda because they are high horsepower and actually innovate and create new models all the time. Some of the nicest motos made are now ktm's
@@humzilla707 KTM have nice bikes, but I'm from Australia where the dr650 and DRZ is king, purely because of the long service intervals, parts availability and proven reliability. If it ain't broke don't fix it ! This is why Honda stick to their formular. I know KTM has gotten a lot better but I also know they have alot of issues. I've heard good things about all of their bikes the 990 in particular. But I would never get one purely because of the part availability, cost and reliability. I know you KTM guys wanna justify your expensive orange bikes but they just don't have the reliability of other brands, and pretty sure KTM isn't the only brand innovating, I mean Honda just released a 250 adventure bike with touring fairing, and Yamaha just released the tenere. when was KTM's last bike reveal ? KTM is just as guilty of churning out the same model of bike with minor upgrades as everyone else and I would venture to say even worse than some Japanese manufacturers maybe not Suzuki or Kawasaki but Honda and Yamaha have been doing very well recently.
I picked a VStrom 650 because I knew I'd want to explore fire roads and such, but not wanting to do single track. I also use it for commuting, so I wanted comfort, wind protection, sit upright and up high, and reliability. If something breaks, I can probably fix it myself and parts are widely available and inexpensive. Yes, it is heavy, so I try not to drop it. It came farkled to the max, so if it does take a nap, plenty of protection and no big fairings to scrape or smash. It isn't the fastest in a straight line. The looks are an acquired taste. Other bikes can handle better. This one checked all the boxes for what I needed/wanted and the price was right. A Jack-of-all-trades kind of motorcycle. ADV bikes might be popular, but they don't all hold value on the used market. Great deals are out there if you have the patience to look.
Saw a post where a dude cut a V-strom 650 down to 380 pounds or so, wet. Still had a windscreen, proper lights, and a rear rack. Some black magic shit, but it's very doable. Plus, I bet it makes the bike 5 times easier off-road, and "twice" as quick on the street.
Sold my FZ-09 for a 2013 triumph tiger XC and im absolutely in love. The power isnt crazy but it will get you where you're going. On back roads i can rip that tiger faster than my FZ and a lot of sport bikes as well. Even with the 21 inch from wheel that thing leans right over until the pegs scrape. It has a ton of suspension travel but for my weight it is perfectly dialed in for the street as well as offroad. I never feel like im being bounced of the bike.
Go be honest I like to buy a Yamaha Ténéré 700 for all terrain tours trough Europe! I got a lot of different bikes for different sports but don’t have a street legal bike or "Tourer" for some long trips... The Ténéré is very minimalistic all I need it’s a bit storage and a nice reliable bike😂 Peace out bro 🤜🤛
I’ve seen riders at track days on dual sports smoking riders on supersports & superbikes, but that comes down to the skill of the rider. Dual sports are very comfortable, handle well & have good low end torque which is what you want for street riding
@@CycleCruza Rock solid and reliable. Plus the bike is 80lbs lighter than the Honda Africa twin, less bells and whistles but it still has abs and rides that line between mid weight dual sport like the KTM 690 and 500EXC and the big 1000cc adventure touring bikes like the Africa Twin and the BMW 1200GS. If i was in your position I would seriously be considering the Tenere. It would be awesome to see you mod the hell out of it and take it on some adventure touring rides!
@@aeror115 Two ingredients to a recipe for success !! Im a fan of the minimalist electronics and the slim body, makes it that much better for tight single track, although I heard its a little top heavy because of that. Regardless, Everyone seems to be giving it great reviews. I wish I had the money to afford one because its the first new bike I have seen in a long time that really appeals to me.
An adventure bike can take you on long journeys that other bikes can’t they are well worth the experience. So many cool bikes to choose from these days
Lots of great comments on your video. Great video too. I was a hardcore sport bike guy. I went from "that was an awesome ride" to "whew!! Made it home." Also, taking my wife for a ride was like asking her to sit on a fence post for hours. My buddy had me try adventure riding. Went off road and I'm hooked!! Lots of events to join, keeps me out of trouble, still an adrenaline rush, the wife LOVES going for rides especially exploring forests and parks. Yes, you have to learn how to pick it up and many other challenges. But I'm absolutely loving it.
Been riding sport tourers since the early 90's.. FJR, Yamaha GTS 1000... This year I picked up a Kawasaki Versys 1000.. Se+ LT.. I won't take it off road other than gravel. I didn't get it to ride off road. I got it to tour... put over 2000 miles on it in under 2 months. LOVE it. It's the modern sport tourer... like a 2019 Concourse or FJR...
I just bought on sep/15/19 my 2019 Ducati multistrada 950s. Love all the electronics, the position and comfort, the looks, the tubeless spoked wheels. Thou must say was undicided between the Bmw f850 gsa and the ducati mt 950s. But what at the end made me dicide for the mt 950s were all the mention above as front and rear electronic suspension, the front break 4 piston and rear 2 piston, cornering lights, vehicle hold control, maintenance service intervals 9k( knowing is gonna be expensive), that is ready for plug an play heated grips and auxilary lights(switchers are already on control hand panel), cornering abs, Etc.
CycleCruza, you totally nailed it in this one! This is why I've been advocating that Kawasaki bump the Versys X 300 to 400cc at the same 385 lb weight. 45 hp will give it freeway capability but still a light enough bike for off-road use. Most adventure bikes are just too damn big and heavy! We need a medium 400cc class!
I see some people using the CRF450L as a lightweight ADV bike. Of course you also have the popular KTM 690 and Husky 701 Enduro as a lightweight ADV bike as well, they only weigh like 360 lbs wet with a ton of power.
@@CycleCruza Those are nice enduro bikes but don't have adventure bike wind protection plus they cost more. I think a Versys X 400 would do it all except for extreme raw off road --- plus it would be better on the highway than those 2 bikes. New bike category needed!
Versys x 300 owner here. I agree on upping the displacement to around 400 at the same weight, but the bike freeway capable as is. I have done very long rides at 75mph and passing cars at 80 - 85 mph. What the bike most desperately needs is a decent seat.
I had a 2017 versys x300. Sold it because of the seat. I've been off-road with it, but didn't have knobbies. I fell as soon as I hit white sand. Needs more torque!
@@jasonmeyer1349 Ninja 400 motor will add needed torque. Did you fall because of the tires or the bike itself? I live in sand country. Sand is tricky. Seat can be fixed.
I sold my big BMW tour bike (K1200LT) in 2013 and bought a Triumph Explorer 1200XC. After that I ended up selling my Harley as well. The Triumph is super comfortable, has 135HP, traction control and ABS and handles really well. I've taken it on a couple of gnarly off-road rides and it does okay but it spends 95% of it's time on the pavement. My wife also loves riding on it. One reason I went for the 1200 over the 800 is that I already own a KTM 530EXC-R for crazy off-road stuff.
For a long time, I was really into Sportbikes & Sport-Tourers. But I recently fell hard for Dualsports and MidWeight or lighter ADV, because the roads I have experienced, are so horrible. Then there's the sliding scale of on-road or off-road tire options for dirt & winter, and the long & soft suspension for shortcuts & exploration. For a while, I saw my new offroad interest, as me loosing another thing I enjoy to government & BS. But, I'm really liking the abilities of ADV over the road only greatness of Sport & Sport-Touring. What evolved from function, is now becoming a passion.
About time you saw the light man! I've had every style of bike available but ADV is the way to go especially considering that you'll be surprised how well they corner on the road and you won't have to get off every half hour to rest your weary ASSSSSSS
2015 Ducati Multistrada/S.... PROS: At 160 HP / 100 lb/ft of torque she is a BEAST. Handling is Awesome... very flickable... so well balanced you forget that she is a 500# machine. A Super Sport bike in A/T guise... no hassles from law enforcement. Not that I'm a Squid... 😆 CONS: Pastic dash... waaayyy too easy to scratch. She is a Tall girl... shorter riders would find her tough to handle. Heat.... not a good warm weather commuter. Any warmer than 28 °C in Gridlock traffic, you'll fry your left leg...
I have a 2016 MTS non enduro, the seat in low position doesn't make the bike too tall for me(I have a 30inches inseam). The dashboard can be protected with a screen protector, got one on mine since day one. It cooks your balls during summer yes But it's a freaking blast to ride. I recently added offroad tires on mine. Gonna test that this week end
Hey Cycle cruza I've been watching your videos for a while now trying to decide whether or not to get back into motorcycling. I used to street ride, trail ride and race motocross. With all your talk about how you can be safe I just purchased an Indian FTR to hooligan around town and venture off just a little bit. Ride on brother. Thanks Mark
Adventure bikes are for people who like adventures its that simple . Do you ride the same areas/distance every time or do you get on your bike and just go wherever the road leads you ? If you're the later then youre ready for adventure bike's
CC the Adventure Bikes were actually of road race bikes. Check out the Dakar Rally race. My next bike is going to be ADVENTURE I like the KTM. They can do it all
I'm looking at a Yamaha Tenere 700 because it uses a tried & tested reliable engine, it will go off road competently & is comfortable on the road long distance AND at £8900 brand new here in UK it's fantastic value for money. The other reason to get an ADV is that you can use it in ALL weathers. The grippier tyres work well on slippery frosty roads, you can fit engine bars to it & even if you do drop it the replacement body panels are cheaper to replace. If you had car troubles in the winter, you could use an ADV to commute to work & fit your food groceries in the panniers. If you want to visit a friend for the weekend 100s of miles away during the summer, why drive when you can load up the panniers & enjoy the journey getting there. The insurance & running costs & spare parts are cheaper too like tyres, chains & sprockets. The 1200 Tenere is shaft drive which is even better if you don't want hassles & expense of chain maintenance, wheel alignment & expense of replacing chain & sprockets IThey genuinelly are multi-purpose. 👌👍.
I have a '16 Africa Twin and '17 KTM 690 enduro r. My AT is for long hauls, two up, go anywhere I want. The 690 is for pure fun as it does mud, single track, gravel, tar, etc....
I started on a shadow 600, went to an intruder 1500, thento an FJR 1300, now riding a V-Strom 1000 and I absolutely love it. Comfortable, quick, and with some practice it's fairly capable off road and makes great Moto camping adventures! CC check out the Mohican Forest and try some moto camping, brings a whole new experience to riding...
I have been riding adventure bikes for the best part of 5 years, I love them. I've had a V-Strom 650, BMW R1150GSA, and Royal Enfield Himalayan. All are great bikes in their own way, all are very versatile and comfortable. My current bike is the Himalayan I love its size and how tough it is. I couldn't see myself riding an uncomfortable sports bike, and I didn't like cruisers when I owned or borrowed them. Not my thing. I like bikes where I stay upright, either adventure or standard bikes.
After 10 years on a Road King I purchased an Africa Twin. It is not as comfortable as the Road King, but it is challenging and exciting. For better, more fit, and larger rider the AT can do it all. I'm short and old and I find the bike a little overwhelming at times but my riding is getting better every day. I feel like I can really see what is going on in traffic. The DCT is very nice.
I love my 2018 tiger 800 XCA, it's actually the green one from the video stills. I can spend way more time in the saddle compared to my old sv650 or soft tail deuce. ADV's are definitely a compromise, but sometimes a Swiss army knife is more useful than just a can opener.
One of the things why I enjoy ADV is because I work in construction as a project manager, having space to fit my tools or stuff of the cases are awesome, not to mention usually I got places where the roads aren’t event done so I’m going on gravel road or dirt ones. And the best part they are massive which people can actually see you on the road lol. I like the V-Strom, but I’m liking the new Africa twin
That's what I have been telling you man. Get an ADV bike and do the T.A.T. CycleCruza does the T.A.T. now there is a series for you. I have a 1000 V-Strom and LOVE it does everything. Handles well in the twisties does mild off road and you can ride it all day on tour. Swiss army knife of motorcycles. Not the best tool for any specific job but can do everything competently.
I had a Zx10r which was fun, thought I’d go the adventure bike route, so bought an Africa twin. It was okay. I liked the seating position. I liked the visibility. It was just too heavy and tall. Also, while the low end torque was okay, top end sucked. I bought a gsxs1000 and I love it.
I have a 2020 KTM EXC-F 450, converted into supermoto, but I would love an adventure bike in the future, as a second bike, for long trips and overall comfort. The Husqvarna Norden 901 is the best looking ADV bike that I’ve seen so far.
What you were describing in your video is the adventure touring bike. I personally enjoy the lightweight adventure bike that doesn't cruise at 90mph where a person totally misses the adventure cause they are going too fast if you know what I mean. Then you get off-road and have to be concerned about dropping a 500 lb.+ bike. Your YZ would work great with the proper mods and gear. I forgot to mention I'm retired, so time is not a factor maybe that's why some folks are in such a hurry to get to their campsite.
If you get a STRONG one like the KTM1290 adv or the Ducati 1260 Multistrada you basically are getting 3 bikes in one a sport bike, touring bike, and off road bike. I love my KTM1290 Super Adventure S for those reasons. Sure its more road oriented but its pushing 170 HP after a flash and exhaust, in addition the off-road mode cuts the power down to 90 HP which makes it more usable for light off road stuff. Definitely one of the best bikes I have owned!
I'm all into Adv bikes, I don't think ill buy a Sport bike again... you got the best of both worlds. A couple of days ago saw this video about a group of people doing some trail riding and the guy on the Africa Twin is killing it..... like KILLING IT...I'll post the link.
luKe - BMW R1250GS or GSA is the best ADV... Nice low center of gravity. The Honda is top heavy and has less power, also I am 6’3.5” and the Honda is super tall. I have a 34” inseam.
Great subject...My story: Riding dirt bikes since I was 10yrs old, and my latest dirt bike a Honda XR650R..when I decided to buy a street bike a ADV bike seem a natural progression. My 2016 BMW F800 GS Adventure gives me a off road like ride on the street. I've taken my BMW to the desert were I ride my Honda and soon found the limits of a heavy ADV bike. Big whoops and deep sand are no place for a big ADV bike. However for many of the reasons you stated my ADV bike is a blast on the street and fine for light off roading such as fire roads. Would never buy a Cruiser.... BTW Many ADV bike have larger fuel tanks, mine holds 6.0 gals.
BMW XR rider here. "Dual Sport" it really isn't.. , but super fast, great in the canyons, and awsome for touring (off highways). Love, love, love it. Would never take it off road though, but you can track it! I ride with a friend who has an Africa Twin. What a great bike. He does do dirt
I have a liquid cooled R1200GS, and a point you missed with bigger ADVs are just how stupidly quick they are from off the line and in corners. You can hit 60 on a GS in near 3 seconds. They will keep up with a good chunk of sub-1000 sport bikes with no issues. For how big they are, they accelerate brutally quick.
I'm currently looking hard at a CB500x for most of the same reasons. Great range, Honda reliability, more than enough engine for me when I'm not looking at marketing trying to sell liter bikes, much lighter than the liter+ ADV bikes not to mention half the price, and the upright seating arrangement and controls make going "off road" much more possible than a cruiser since you at least have some ground clearance and more importantly can stand up. Nothing will beat a pure dirt bike for making a trail and heavy off road, but for the majority of the riding I do the ADV just fits. It looks like the perfect mix for me: A long range exploration machine that can also go light off-road without being so much dead iron to pick up when you need to like the larger bikes. Key phrase there being "for me" ;)
Cycle cruiser just move the whole family to somewhere there are some dirt roads and a few twisties. Adventure bikes in a straight line Is wasting 75% of its capability..
Agree. Comfy for long rides. You can do some moderate offroad. Carry bags...etc...etc. Police dont see you. Especially if wear gear. You like a responsible rider
Get one! They are the SUV of motorbikes. The new BMW Gs 850 is awesome. The Honda is gorgeous and by far their top selling bike. You could ride to Moab or wherever. Your channel would really expand seeing how popular these are. The Pnw is full of the. BRD baby!
I think it would be great for people like me. I have 3 dirtbikes and one cruiser. The only problem is that I live 3 miles away from paved roads and I commute on my cruiser. I drive on low maintenance gravel roads 5 days of the week. It's even worse after a rain (of which me have many) because of the tire ruts from heavy vehicles
adventure bikes are my go to thing because of their versatility and all of the things you can do with them and if you ever feel the need to ride from Patagonia to Alaska - no problemo! but you can always look at the 'meet in the middle' bikes too that are starting to take over like the royal Enfield Himalayan and some of the Honda mid range (cb500x rally raid etc)
I'd just like to add that adv bikes with boxer engines are not as hard to pick up as it may seem. Yes they are heavy, but the weight sits down low due to the engine design. And because the engine sticks out the way it does, the bike never falls over flat. You're basically half way picking it up already when you start lifting it. This makes it way easier to pick up than say a parallel twin with a smaller displacement.
I just think it's a trend. I think the internet links adventurers together. You can see other motorcyclists doing crazy long journeys around the world and it makes it more accessible and relate-able. I have ridden adventure bikes through China, and it's the fact that these bikes can take you places, at least for me, into remote places and can handle the roads in the developing World. I spoke at an overland travel event this year and from what I saw of the ADV riders, you're right, most people use these big adventure bikes as cruisers. They really are the cross overs from sports touring and cruisers to a...well... more adventurous journey with the potential for a taste of off road travel.
Can concur with the adventure bikes. I have the Tiger 800 and love it but like most adventure bikes they have a high centre of gravity and once it leans past 10 degrees or so you've had it. I had it drop on me once and I got my boot trapped under it, took ages to free myself and getting it back up was not easy.
I’m hoping to ride my Vstrom 1000 cross country next year. It’s perfect for camping. I’ve dropped it once in gravel, pretty east to pickup with the side case on. 16,000 miles and not one issue.
Adventure bikes have really sparked my interest lately and the Africa twin in particular, then they go and announce a new one. I'm popping down to my local dealer as soon as they have one in to test ride.
Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I love my 2017 F700GS. It's my commuter, errand runner, tourer, cruiser and off roader. If I don't do 200 miles on a ride I'm disappointed. You just don't want to stop riding. I leave the street fighting to my Sportster. Mid sized is most versatile and I would only want a bigger one (R1200/1250) if I was going to do long distance touring. CC should have 3 bikes: Street fighter/naked, the YZ and an Adv bike. Everything is covered then.
I was talking to the rider of a Suzuki DR650, his son has a DL650. He claimed that his son was able to go everywhere on the DL that he was willing to go on the DR. The father was concerned about his own ability to pick up the DL in the event of dropping it, but that the son didn't have much of an issue getting the DL up, but he was competent not to drop it regularly.
Two weeks ago I went on a 6 day trip that was 2300.8 miles on my 2014 V Strom 1000. My longest day was 513 miles and the second longest was 489. My butt was a little achy but I was not beat up and could have done longer. I have a Givi windshield, Oxford heated grips, lowered pegs, 25mm bar risers, and I am comfortable all the time no matter what the weather is doing. Adv bikes are good for traveling but also using them in place of a cruiser for sure. And I didn't have to shy away from rough roads! My friend I met in WV had just traded his older V Strom 650 for one of the last model year HD Dynas. It was nice but we had to skip some sweet looking roads in the Appalachians. Bummer.... I like the V Strom for the riding I do but I would love to have others as well. I will say The V Strom 1000 has excellent brakes that some reviews have said feel even better than Brembos. It also has the best headlight I've ever had on a bike. It's like driving a car at night, seriously. There are no dead spots on the road void of light and I'm not scared to ride at night. The Honda AT is sweet but the first the 2016 did have some issues with the forks and I believe some runability issues which is odd for Honda. Advrider Forums has great information. As for picking them up Moto Trek has a good video on several techniques on picking or tipping up ADV bikes. It's a great channel with great videos on riding off-road. I'll try to to post the link to his video on picking them up. All bikes are awesome but I would love to see you get an ADV bike and have a totally new experience! 👍
my moto guzzi audace has foot pegs that are between mids and fronts. my knees are bent about 90°. I feel very confident and comfortable riding that bike. it also has a zero to 60 in about 3.5 seconds which isn't too shabby for a 1380cc 650lbs cruiser.
Like you said CycleCruza, adventure bikes can be a good cruiser very comfortable and you could do some off road action on it but not too much. It is nice to have an option to explore dirt roads than be confined be confined on the street.
We expect you to test ride an adv @CycleCruza you will be impressed, they have punchy twin engines and a short gearing, they get up and goop baby, you have the KTM with the 160hp that is a beast. Another aspect is the high fuel range and high luggage capacity without looking uuugly, some have remote rear shock adjustment so you can set it up to the weight. The seating position is absolutely amazing where you sit inside the bike with a T shape tank where you can tuck your leg from the cold and a high tank where you can put your luggage or devices, the handlebar is wide so in the corners you can lean a bit forward and press down to use leverage making it very agile for its weight.
@@jimgravante6497 you make pressure not exactly down but at 45 degree, riding an adv imitating a sportbike position, the reason is this bikes have a neutral weight distribution or even rear biased, when going as fast as you can in corners you feel the front end imprecise and floaty, the other advantage is that you can "pick it up" when you feel you are losing the front wheel by pressuring the outside of the handlebar, this and other tricks are the reason why experienced riders who had all sorts of bikes can go faster than lighter bikes in the twisties. It can also be used in scooters, I have a 300cc 16" wheel scooter with full exhaust system, steel braided brake lines, variator (it's like a custom gearing and it's a blast to ride. Another advantage of advs is the amazing braking stability, you can use both brakes hard and the big wheels and suspension make the bike go on rails, even trailbraking is easier.
I agree with your analysis, but a talented rider on an R3 Yamaha can smoke any bike, regardless of size and displacement. I believe it's the riders skills, not the actual bike, that, in the end, determines the ride. Just a few points I picked up from Lee Park's Total Control Advanced Riding Clinics.
hey cruza have you ever forgotten to unclip your airbag vest when you get off the bike?? does it go POOF ???? :) i fell in love with ADV bikes growing up watching the DAKAR rally (just wish i did own one lol )
I have a Triumph Tiger 1200 and let me tell you a fact: You won't call it comfortable after a 300 mile ride. It is more comfortable than the Africa Twin or any sport bike, but if you want comfort get a Goldwing or similar couch to ride on. Longest run on the Triumph was about 200 miles w/o stopping and when I did get off I laid next to the bike on my back in the middle of a country road for a half hour to stretch out my back and finally be able to walk again. I did a 3700 mile ride this spring in 3 weeks, while it was fun as hell, my body was paying the price for those 3 weeks and a whole week afterwards.... I am 47 yrs old, someone younger would probably do better, but it's not easy for a young dude to pony up $25k for a new bike (with all options (XCa) and after all taxes and registration). The Africa Twin you feel like you are riding ON the bike, the Triumph you feel like you're riding IN the bike, the riding experience is very different.
You hit my DR650 on the spot. Being a dual sport its a bit uncomfortable for long rides but after a couple mods like an aftermarket seat, windshield and highway pegs I call it my cruiser and can't think why I would want to take a trip on any other motorcycle. It's like riding an SUV really. I also met a guy once riding through my area going back home to canada after doing the trans-america trail on a WR250 modded like an adventure bike so if you think about it anything can be an adventure bike.
There are "dual-sport" bikes, which are more dirt-oriented, and there are "adventure-tour" bikes, which are the heavier adv bikes to which you are referring. They are two different animals. In years past, many riders would have multiple bikes for different purposes, I.E. a cruiser, a sport bike, and a dirtbike (all of which are one-trick ponies). With the refinement of the adv tourer, many of us are now thrilled to own one highly versatile motorcycle that satisfies all our needs on two wheels. Adv tourers have eclipsed sport tourers by a wide margin. Comparing apples to apples, a BMW R1250GS weighs about 600 lbs wet and loaded, and an H-D touring bike weighs about half a ton. My BMW adv bike will smoke anything H-D makes, whether it's reeling in miles, hooning through the curves, or slinging mud down a single-track.
The latest Africa twin has a great TFT screen. Btw a lady can pick it up with the right technique. Even riding it with a few courses will allow that urban fuckery . Enough power, torque, comfort & all e bells & whistles that come with the TFT screen. My Gs is shaft driven ( Low maintenance) , with its crash bars , never have to worry about dropping it in the garage. You’ll definitely be able to deadlift the bike, let alone walking it up. Watch Ewan Mcgreggor’s adventures. Please buy one 🙏🏼
I have a Ninja 500r and am looking forward to purchasing a dual sport 250 for the versatility and variety in addition to my Ninja 500. For me the adventure bike would be too heavy. Like you I like something lighter. Good video.👍🏼👍🏼
Glad your starting to see the light on adventure bikes, years ago I committed you should try a adventure bike but you had some hate on then at the time. They’re the SUV of motorcycles.
They’re popular because they’re like a do it all bike. I mean, ALL. Jack of all trades if you will. Plus you can pack on many many miles comfortably. You should get that Arica twin man!! That’s a badass bike right there, sounds like how a twin should
As an adventure bike owner, they are like SUVs. Most people buy them with the thought of taking them off road, but just end up driving around the city. For me, sport bikes are crazy and uncomfortable, cruisers are boring. The option to go off road to the camp site, I don't feel hamstrung by the weather / roads. Plowed through the mud on my bike the other day, no problem.
Versatility, Range , Rider aids and comfort I test rode an R1250 GS adventure and that thing was light af and it’s even lighter once you’re moving. I’d love to have one. It’s like an aggressive couch. I get why they sell. They’re expensive for sure but you get so much more for your money than a bagger/touring cruiser. But for off road? Light is right.
@@CycleCruza my buddy bought one (a twin) in the spring time. I have a gs1200r adv. He will be first to admit that if you have the money NOTHING beats having a gs. That said.. the Honda is A GREAT value. 21 inch front tire. It rides and feels more like an Enduro for sure off road. You can stick a leg out around corners. But the big front tire is slow in turns on the road.. the gyro is noticably different than a 19 inch front. Also the auto clutch isn't for everyone
CycleCruza I can’t, the dealers won’t let you where I live. I’ll be going in for a service soon at triumph and I’ll test out the tiger XCA though. I hear a lot of complaints with quality of the AT. It’s reliable but the Materials are shit or so they say.
I have an Africa twin because I'm only willing to store/maintain a single motorcycle and it at least has one foot in every niche of riding. Not the best at anything, but I can at least try everything. I love the high seating position for visibility in traffic too.
You get the power of a sport bike and feel of a cruiser in one that's why most people want it. Like my bandit gsf 1200, sport touring so not quite the same but you get the idea
CycleCruza, The adventure dirt oriented bike that will convert you to adventure riding is the Yamaha Tenare 700..Look at the reviews because a top end expert rider can thrash the current Tenare 700 off road with all the smoothness and reliability that Yamaha is known for. What do you think ?
Tiger 800 with a pair of TKC70's is my daily ride. Get the XCx or XCa version and you'll wonder what took you so long to get an ADV bike. Maybe you won't jump logs with it, but most of the other off-road shenanigans will work out.

Ya......now I c you have to be a super rich person to buy an h2, we should just save the money buy 2-3 brand new bikes instead of h2

Why dont you buy an mt 09 tracer?
CycleCruza FOCUS... young one. Honda SP. Please
Mid size adv bikes are probably the most versitile, jack-of-all-trades bikes.
Trades. Not traits.
Am gunning for a 500cc adv ...
Adv bikes are basically the SUVs of motorcycles.
Aashay Mantri yup, just like cruisers are muscle cars, sport bikes are sports cars, etc
true!
theyre not, suvs are fast boxes, they dont handle.advs handle well and dont miss on any fun of any other motorcycle.theyre basically legos, you give em proper equipment and they become whatever kind of bike you want them to be.touring sporty dirt.sure the gs is a mostly touring bike but take ktm those kind of bikes can easily leave behind hesitant riders on the street/track and can be ridden very hard on the dirt.their downsite is that theyre heavier to pick up in the dirt and mostly their really high in cost repairs, this aint a dirtbike, itll run high.touring wise theyre excellent and some of them can be proper street bikes with 17s rear front.a very skilled rider on a sport bike will be ahead of it but you throw 2 mediocre ones and theyre on equal foot
Yep, in the UK BMW R1200GS is a bike equivalent of Land Rover (aka 4x4 which is never driven off-road). There is a certain biker type who rides these.

This should be your next bike dude. Stop making excuses
Nice!
Keep getting it.. 👍 I'm a WR250R Rider thanks to CycleCruza..
yep. old heads.
I miss cyclecruza on that cbr 600rr. Ive been looking at 600cc bikes and he helped me make the decision on getting a 2008 600 double aaaaaaaaaa. Stay cool CC.
Me too. I miss when he was raw and uncut. Hilarious 😆
Lol
"secret to a heavy adv bike is don't drop it"
Thanks for the tip.
I drop my f800gs offroad all the time. No biggy tbqh.
How's the Tenere doing for you these days?
Screw the 1 dimensional H2 and go for the yamaha tenere 700 or the africa twin.
KTM Adventure 790
Buy the 2020 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports for your next bike!!!!
Just get a turbo boosa for all your comfortable off-roading needs
Bash plates optional
The most important thing in considering an ADV motorcycle is comfort underneath you.. short explanation ADV: if you want to haul ass all the time KTM. If you want something perfectly able and a little softer edged the Africa twin. Triumph tiger awesome off-road, best sound. Then BMW if you have lots of money and want everything.
@@marshallfischer3667 If you want something to haul ass half of the time and sit at the mechanics the other half, then KTM !
Love my vstrom
The Ténéré is very minimalistic all I need it’s a bit storage and a nice reliable bike😂
Peace out bro 🤜🤛
I’ve seen riders at track days on dual sports smoking riders on supersports & superbikes, but that comes down to the skill of the rider. Dual sports are very comfortable, handle well & have good low end torque which is what you want for street riding
I'd probably consider that new Yamaha Tenere 700. Lightweight adventure bike with mt07 engine
I want cyclecruza to get one for his next bike, but I know he wont :(
Imagine the content that thing could produce, would be awesome !
Cool bike. mt-07 engine is rock solid.
Yeah the tenere 700 would be my next goal!
I like the minimalistic design and the reliable engine 👍
You're devoting more time to product placement than officially sponsored channels! Lots of fast forwarding to get to the content.
What do you think of the New Triumph Tiger 1200 Rally Explorer?
Congrats Dude.... Enjoy your new ride... 🙂👍
Ducati Multstrada 950s sweet, sweet ride. Congrats man. It’s on my short list. Cycle Cruza would look good on a 950s 😎
PROS:
At 160 HP / 100 lb/ft of torque she is a BEAST.
Handling is Awesome... very flickable... so well balanced you forget that she is a 500# machine.
A Super Sport bike in A/T guise... no hassles from law enforcement. Not that I'm a Squid... 😆
CONS:
Pastic dash... waaayyy too easy to scratch.
Motorcycle camping with with an ADV bike is the bomb.
Yeah, I love that Africa Twin, and the new one looks even better!
luKe the dual clutch technology sound pretty interesting too...
Ride safe👍
AeroR right on!
luKe - BMW R1250GS or GSA is the best ADV... Nice low center of gravity. The Honda is top heavy and has less power, also I am 6’3.5” and the Honda is super tall. I have a 34” inseam.
@@Bikerbug2020 BMW is way less reliable. It is also heavier as the Honda in total. Running costs and purschase wise those are not comparable.
They are excellent in the Western US because of the more open terrain there.
I've gone from an adv bike to an XSR 900. The XSR is as comfy as my V Strom was, but is lighter and much better at wheelies ;)
Well I ride everywhere on my YZ, aka "urban fookery!"
Agree. Comfy for long rides. You can do some moderate offroad. Carry bags...etc...etc. Police dont see you. Especially if wear gear. You like a responsible rider
I don't think I have ever seen a ADV pulled over by the cops. I've never been pulled over on my YZ or WR, knock on wood.
Get one! They are the SUV of motorbikes. The new BMW Gs 850 is awesome. The Honda is gorgeous and by far their top selling bike. You could ride to Moab or wherever. Your channel would really expand seeing how popular these are. The Pnw is full of the. BRD baby!
Maybe one day when I want to travel across the country. Right now I can't do much and a bit crazy when I get on my YZ. lol
Thanks brother I love all your videos but this was definitely my favorite. Keep the great content coming stay safe my brother.
adventure bikes are my go to thing because of their versatility and all of the things you can do with them and if you ever feel the need to ride from Patagonia to Alaska - no problemo!
but you can always look at the 'meet in the middle' bikes too that are starting to take over like the royal Enfield Himalayan and some of the Honda mid range (cb500x rally raid etc)
I saw the Africa Twin in my neighborhood and had to take a pic of it. I stare at that pic often 🤣
Just picked up a used drz and has been a blast to ride live in the country with lots of off road trail
my moto guzzi audace has foot pegs that are between mids and fronts. my knees are bent about 90°.
That's funny, I've never heard of a motorcycle steering by pressing down on the handlebars...dont they move forward and backwards to countersteer??
I am a naked bike rider nothing will change that
I can go 300 miles between fill ups on my vstrom 650, on my Honda shadow I had to get gas every 100 miles
Nice! Great bike to travel on.
I’m spoiled from shaft drive. Which is the only reason I ruled out the Vstrom. But it does look like an affordable nice bike
I've been looking at the V-Strom 650. Looks like a great bike and lighter than a lot of others. I already have 4 bikes, so I might have to sell one.
Versatility, Range , Rider aids and comfort
I test rode an R1250 GS adventure and that thing was light af and it’s even lighter once you’re moving. I’d love to have one. It’s like an aggressive couch. I get why they sell.
They’re expensive for sure but you get so much more for your money than a bagger/touring cruiser. But for off road? Light is right.
Did you try the Honda AFrica twin? It's only 14.5k!

If money wasn’t an issue I’d have the GSA and a 701 enduro already 😪
I have an Africa twin because I'm only willing to store/maintain a single motorcycle and it at least has one foot in every niche of riding. Not the best at anything, but I can at least try everything.
I love the high seating position for visibility in traffic too.
The V strom 650 is my personal favorite ADV bike. Highly recommend you check it out cyclecruza.
You get the power of a sport bike and feel of a cruiser in one that's why most people want it. Like my bandit gsf 1200, sport touring so not quite the same but you get the idea
Honestly cruza you should buy a turbo busa. Has all the power you need for the braap and cheap as chips, super ugly like the H2 as well!
Started out with the CRF Rally. Africa Twin is next on the list. Careful out there on the streets, it’s dangerous on the West side of Brownstown!
Tiger 800 with a pair of TKC70's is my daily ride. Get the XCx or XCa version and you'll wonder what took you so long to get an ADV bike. Maybe you won't jump logs with it, but most of the other off-road shenanigans will work out.
