    A deuterium filled thyratron would easily switch your capacitor bank. Tens of kV possibly at tens of kA. Driver circuit is pretty simple, just need to bias the grid negative and then shoot it positive to initiate discharge.

      I thought about trying with an ignitron I have on hand but a thyratron would probably be the safer option of the two.

    The Fluorescence could even be due to soft x-rays ( very short wave Ultra-violet) did you see the same Fluorescence happening in the DBX screen is that also a Electrolytic caps film?

    2:19. I noticed this also happens with uv lights on pvc heatshrink and never really knew why. I was smoking the jazz cabbage when I first discovered it so needless to say it blew my mind

    To protect the power SCR when using them in a coil gun circuit put a HV diode of the same voltage (or a 100 volts less) and amperage in reverse across the anode and cathode

    This looks like a great capacitor bank for experimentation. I would love to see that 1000V bank used for a electrothermal gun, you should be able to get some very good efficiency at such a high voltage. You could probably get around 5 to 10% electrical to kinetic efficiency with an decent setup. How are you charging your 1000V bank?

    • @DBXLabs
      @DBXLabs  3 роки тому +2

      The current charging setup is a rectified variac powered MOT. When I rearrange the capacitors to optimize can crushing (5000V), I throw a Cockcroft Walton made from microwave diodes and capacitors on the MOT output.
      I saw your testing of that electrothermal gun on your channel. Very interesting stuff.

      If you have a number or email, I’d be eager to talk to you about testing out electrothermal guns. I’ve done some preliminary testing today on the 30-50 J scale and I think it would make for a great project.

    Have you seen James Hoopman's work with capacitors of this size? You can create high-energy plasma tori that can burn common materials, shatter glass, and leave marks on metal with capacitors like this and minimal materials! You could also make an electrothermal gun (basically a gun with the gunpowder substituted with a some of that exploding metal foil). Check his channel out here, he's a pretty cool dude and he was happy to help me design my own "plasma gun": ua-cam.com/channels/XSYIcPog2YGWJZ3jwhhKhA.htmlvideos

    Brother how do you know 500v x 1000uF produce 125 Joule? Can you teach me how to calculate it? Thank you for this video

    • @DBXLabs
      @DBXLabs  Рік тому

      Energy = 0.5 * Capacitance * Voltage^2
      125 J = 0.5 * 0.001F * (500V)^2

    Would putting that 1400joules into a big coil create a emp blast?

    On another UA-cam channel The Backyard Scientist one of his friends made a 20,000 volt hv capacitor bank that could be fired remotely by tripping a large switch, they blew up a pickle and a watermelon and did some bridge-wire explosions across a doll!

    i would love to have those capacitors. can u build a real coil gun with these?(6 stages is good) the coil guns on internet are all weak and just for getting views.

    Don't use those caps on coilguns, doing that is a nice way to destroy them due voltage reversal, also coilguns and small railguns are practically toys. If you really want to make a powerful projectile launcher that uses pulsed electric power you can make an electrothermal launcher. Basically you make an electric arc between two electrodes inside a small tube. For a 1000V 2.5kJ cap bank such tube should have an inner diameter of about 4-6mm and the electrodes should be about 10-15mm apart, you have to experiment, the longer the arc the more efficient until a point because after some length it quenches before the capacitor bank can discharge most of the energy, usually you should be left with about 200-350V. The extremely intense arc that happens inside the plastic tube ablates the walls and thus creates huge amounts of expanding plasma, you direct this plasma to some water (very little like one or two drops per kJ) this water can be in the form of a gel and should be just in front of the plasma capillary like 2mm away. YOu put a barrel in front of all this.
    This launchers are far more powerful than all the toy electromagnetic launchers you see in YT, To the point that I calculate if you make a good build launcher you could be getting a 6mm ball bearing at around 800m/s if you use a light projectile like an airsoft bb you easily go above 1km/s. With a 4kJ cap bank I managed to go above 2500m/s with a .2g bb. It makes craters about 12mm in diameter on aluminium plate.

    I'm making a coil soon that will output 1,200joules just from 12v car battery no caps for a coilgun but it'll probably be more like a coil cannon at 10kg of wire 173 wires in parallel to equal 100amps input, theres no way a little coil can utilize 1,200 joules

    hi, nice vid.
    I have a question about something different.
    How I can optimize the birkeland eyde reactor, that you built a few years for a better efficiency?

    • @DBXLabs
      @DBXLabs  3 роки тому +1

      You could probably increase the efficiency by close to an order of magnitude by blowing the air directly into the plasma arc while also using strong permanent magnets to flatten the plasma into a disk. Larger disk area would mean more breakdown of molecules in air.

    Did you notice the caps glowing at 3:35?

    • @DBXLabs
      @DBXLabs  3 роки тому +2

      Yes. I first saw it a few months back and had to make sure it wasn’t just something with the camera.
      The opening shot is actually one of the plastic casings of the same capacitors unrolled flat to take advantage of this unexpected phosphorescence.
