I have been using acid baths to remove rust from cast iron cookware. I get a black coating on the piece which I believe to be magnetite or black iron oxide )Fe3O4. Could you suggest a way to prevent the Fe3O4 formation? My thought was that possibly a good chelating agent would complex the Fe2O3 and remove it without producing any magnetite. Do you happen to know if Evaporust works to do this? Thanks!

Don't use those caps on coilguns, doing that is a nice way to destroy them due voltage reversal, also coilguns and small railguns are practically toys. If you really want to make a powerful projectile launcher that uses pulsed electric power you can make an electrothermal launcher. Basically you make an electric arc between two electrodes inside a small tube. For a 1000V 2.5kJ cap bank such tube should have an inner diameter of about 4-6mm and the electrodes should be about 10-15mm apart, you have to experiment, the longer the arc the more efficient until a point because after some length it quenches before the capacitor bank can discharge most of the energy, usually you should be left with about 200-350V. The extremely intense arc that happens inside the plastic tube ablates the walls and thus creates huge amounts of expanding plasma, you direct this plasma to some water (very little like one or two drops per kJ) this water can be in the form of a gel and should be just in front of the plasma capillary like 2mm away. YOu put a barrel in front of all this. This launchers are far more powerful than all the toy electromagnetic launchers you see in YT, To the point that I calculate if you make a good build launcher you could be getting a 6mm ball bearing at around 800m/s if you use a light projectile like an airsoft bb you easily go above 1km/s. With a 4kJ cap bank I managed to go above 2500m/s with a .2g bb. It makes craters about 12mm in diameter on aluminium plate.

i have this same issue where i set it to max temp and it still doesnt melt copper wiring. I one time had it on for 3+ hours max temp and the only thing it did was turn the copper bright orange. Poked it around a few times and it still was solid.

You would get better NQ if you do a classic nitration of the QN. The idea that it is a dehydration reaction is outdated. You can do it like a dehydration, but really it's just using its own nitrate for nitration. If you make sure there is some extra nitrate in the solution you will get better yealds and the resulting product will be more energetic.

No where was it mentioned how strong the acid was just from the reaction/bubbling alone? 1% 5% 30%? I'm not looking for fuming acid, just something in the 30 - 60% range. After the 9 days, how strong was it?

I wouldn't be too discouraged by the low yield and the cost not being better than commercial ones. There are a ton of inefficiencies in your setup that I think would be easy to sort out. For one think I think you can get it to self siphon through the apparatus by positioning the ports such that it allows for thermal convection currents to form. Also if done in sunlight, the inlet could be fed through a long, coiled black pipe (like those DIY water heaters) to heat incoming air and require less voltage to make the plasma. For electrochemistry current determines the rate of the reactions, a transformer exchanges current for voltage so that may be in fact slowing you down. Personally I wouldn't push the voltage higher than the breakdown voltage and then just invest any extra watts into more current.

Are you saying this is a cleaner way to make nitric acid rather than going the nitrate salt and sulphuric acid distillation way?

These videos are cool for understanding how things work. I really appreciate the work that you do, and hope that you can be safe. Hopefully no one out there thinks a good idea to replicate the manufacturing of these substances without proper understanding in their dangerous properties, protection and especially understanding the decomposition over time. (Some substances just don't like shelf life)
