"I am but his..., unworthy sparrow." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👍💯.. I never get tired of watching this old classic. It's right there with CASABLANCA and SAHARA two of my favorite WWII Era Humphrey Bogart flicks. The dialog and Character development is so entertaining in CAPTAIN KIDD. Charles Laughton is phenomenal in his role.
A really superb restoration. Please notice that there is no "weave or judder" - this was a big problem with movie film in the old days. In this restored version, it's rock steady. What a fantastic film. I wish they made cinema like this nowadays.
New York pirate! Hah! Sheldon Leanord has had quite so many memorable roles, and you sure don't need open eyes once you hear his voice! Thanks again P.F.! You never cease to amaze me!
I saw Charles Laughton for the first time as a kid watching "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" by myself on an old black and white TV. I was absolutely terrified of Quasimodo, yet somehow sympathetic. Laughton still seems creepy to me but that shows the effect of great acting! BTW, his is the only hunchback worth watching. No one has ever compared!!!
Good old Charles Laughton later played again his Captain Kidd character in ''Captain Kidd'' with Abbott & Costello. Unfortunately the movie was a flop, though no fault from our beloved players.
Quasimodo fell off the roof of Notre Dame onto the hard concrete courtyard below. A concerned crowd quickly formed around the dazed hunchback. " What happened ? " asked a gendarme, pushing his way through. " No good asking me, " says Quasimido, " I've just got here myself ! "
Wow! I've been watching old black and whites all week and this one is the best. Charles Laughton is such a great actor, the rest of the cast are also great. This is definitely a keeper, to be watched year after year.
This film gives Charles Laughton the chance to show the depth and pathos of his acting ability. His performance here shows a depth and structure sadly lacking in many subsequent British actors, betrayed by their megalomania, substance abuse or perversity. Mr. Laughton was a lovely actor; the direction here is notably slick and well co-ordinated. I thoroughly enjoyed it, even the opening score was noticeable.
According to Robert Morley, Charles Laughton received the award for best actor when he was a student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. He could be hammy at times but when under good direction he was always outstanding.
Thank you so much for posting this film. I used to watch these on a black and white t.v. set back in the day. This film brought back good memories just by seeing the title.
