Oh what joy. This one takes me back to my childhood. Superb film, and what a cast. Louis Hayward, ( who vied with Errol Flynn as the top swashbucklers of their day ), George Sanders as a great villain, a role he filled with such style and menace, plus the gorgeous Ms. Bennett. A real Classic.
Thank you for all your fantastic old wonderful dramas , I come back to see them again every few years ,and enjoy them just like the first time ! God Bless you and your family with SAFTY , health , and peace to you all ! ❤️🙏🇨🇦
I grew up watching Clayton Moore in the 'Lone Ranger' with my sister in early 1950s. Later years, my step-daddy's best friend, Johnathan Frid, played great soap opera of the vampire, Barnabas in 'Dark Shadows' with Joan Bennett.
Movies like this one are wonderful: the hero must use subterfuge to win the day, the sword-fighting is convincing, the bad guy is evil to the core, and the royals are dumber than rocks (like the House of Windsor dumb!). "It will be such a relief to go in and out of a door again"; this is a great flick. Thanks for posting.
Thank you. I love this movie, the plot thickens very quickly, the good characters are interesting, sometimes humorous, the bad characters sinister and threatening--the stuff of a good story. Lots of fun!
Louis Hayward plays a masked Zorro type character called The Torch and he actually appears in the film as the masked hero more than Tyrone Power appears as Zorro in The Mark of Zorro where Tyrone Power doesn't appear in Zorro in the last 20 minutes of the film!
Nice one. Joan Bennett and George Sanders were excellent. There were striking similarities in physical appearances among Joan Bennett , Vivien Leigh and Hedy Lamarr
What a fun, uplifting escape! And it looks like Hayward and Sanders actually did some of their own sword fighting, or were those doubles? It was the first time I've ever seen either Louis Hayward or Joan Bennett. I wonder how many other films they made? And George Sanders, as always, was the consummate, one-of-a-kind villain. What a great actor! Although he was appropriately dastardly, he also conveyed that he had genuine feelings for Bennett's character. Montagu Love was also superb, as he always was. There were such great character actors back in Hollywood's golden years!
You can watch the lovely Joan Bennett in the original vampire soap opera: Dark Shadows. She played Elizabeth Collins, the matriarch of the Collins family.
Hi Stephanie! Check out Hayward, and Bennett in the best version of Dumas' classic story "The Man In The Iron Mask" (1939), directed by the great James Whale! I think that was the first time they were paired together, plus Hayward was terrific playing identical twins!!!!!!
Gr8 story. Enjoyed very much. Thx for downloading. Sanders plays the best villain. Another episode of the attractive powerful wealthy get the attractive powerful wealthy.
George Sanders had the speech and mannerisms to pull off the part of a villain, in spades. He always sounded so smug, condescending, and evil. I think one of his best parts was being the voice of Shere Kahn in The Jungle Book. He even had a good bit of comedy in that roll. He was excellent in this movie, which was his normal.
The Saint, or should that be two Saints, swaps his .38 for a blade in the Bourbon Restoration and swaps Hoppy for the Lone Ranger with plenty of derring-do and swash and buckle and you even see the original Peaky Blinders haircut sported by George Sanders. An enjoyable romp.
Wow! I've seen a lot of swashbucklers, though was familiar mostly with the ones like The Mark of Zorro and The Adventures of Robin Hood. I've been able to discover a lot more old classics on UA-cam, though some have definitely been of lesser quality or poor acting. But this one is marvelous! I'd seen Hayward in a couple others so far, and appreciated his ability to play different personas, as well as be cunning and daring. And I knew George Sanders was a good villain, very sincere and with gravitas, but dastardly. But I really appreciate how much they made everyone feel like real people in this movie. The guards aren't all nameless faces and cut down left and right while being foolish or stupid. The bad guy is prideful and wants to do terrible things, but he has a brain and uses it. There's none of the "you're wearing a mask, so no one will ever know who you are" nonsense. It makes sense they would question how The Torch got his information. I like how the escapes don't always go as planned, I like the sense of humor, I like how each person has their ideals they are willing to fight for in various ways. It just is a rollicking adventure, filled with suspense, action, love, swordfights, disguises, and a true ensemble of characters we learn about and understand their actions. Well done to everyone who worked on this movie and made it so great. I am adding this to my short list of truly wonderful swashbucklers!
Have a look also for The Corsican Brothers (1941) with Douglas Fairbanks jnr. Great swashbuckler from that period from a story by Alexandre Dumas père.
@@mjd4502 Thank you for the recommendation! I found it and watched it. It was great, though I always feel for all the nameless side characters that wind up dead along the way in these stories. Dumas sure wrote a lot more of these types of stories than I knew. But they do make for exciting and intriguing movies. I thought for sure the doctor was going to get it at any point along the way. I'm glad he didn't, for all he went through to help them. And I was glad it went as it did; I was afraid the hateful person might live and the noble one die in a tragic sacrifice. It was still tragic, though they resolved it a little, but it was a more satisfying story that way. The cinematography was excellent; good use of angles and shadows and framing. The lavish sets and costumes, more real people having actual conversations and being intelligent, great swashbuckling - a good movie also!
Please stop interfering with my program when I’m done watching I’ll turn it off thank you and now you won’t let me get back to it do you want me to keep writi no that’s an artifact of my lack of vision I’m a blind citizen but I’m enjoying listening to your stories for movies thank you
Such a delightful film. Many thanks from an 87 year old Englishman who just loves these old movies. February, 2024.

Back then, the actors usually came from the Stage and brought all that experience with them.

And then there were none.
George Sanders! What a performance ... the only true, honest performance throughout. Nice film.

Great film good action.
Charming, well-acted and handsomely designed swashbuckler.
Kept me on the edge of my seat loved it
Pretty tense towards the end there!!!!
It was a great cast. All fine actors. Joan was good enough to hang with the Brits. I also saw Scarlett O'Hara's first husband in this movie.
“By the time they figure out where we are, we won’t be there!” LOL
I'm 70 and love them also 🎉🎉🎉🎉❤

The first time I saw this film years ago, I was surprised to see The Lone Ranger. (Clayton Moore)
Now please find the return of Monte Cristo, with Louis Hayward and Barbara Britten. PLEASE!!

"THE LONE RANGER".!
A good film well presented acting liked ❤
There seems to be similarities with this film compared to the king and I with Ronald Colman never the less I like them both👍
Florence Bates was Mrs Van Hopper in Rebecca.
The villain is the voice of the Sher Khan (the tiger) from the original Jungle Book!
Yes. George Sanders
I made a mistake the film I was referring to is if I were king 🤴
