Makes me happy knowing these legends are still making music.
I can’t wait for the album
Right!? Still so god damn amazing after all these years and even relevant, ha.
It gives me the smile
Music ua-cam.com/video/WK4bBYbmrdM/v-deo.html
And getting better every time they come out with whatever project...Thom Yorke is a musical god!
This song is like having a perfect dream that you never want to wake up from. Nothing short of brilliant.
.
really ? 🧿
Love how the bassline repeats in that unpredictable out-of-sync way. These guys are musos musos. Incredible production too
That bassline is disgusting dude, goddamn that shit is funky
Nigel always gets it DONE
@@Tuteins Oh thanks for the info, I didn’t look at the description. Wikipedia said Nigel was the producer for The Smile
bassline has been stuck in my head all week
@@Tuteins pretty sure that's who produced the video
Ah, the happy version of National Anthem I never knew I needed
OMG
Weird, "happy" isn't the word I'd use at all.
@@gorgolyt more like funky
Thom’s bassline really reminds me of Laura Lee of Khruangbin’s style here. Amazing!
Instagram video shows thom playing bass and Jonny playing his gibson guitar
@@Skyppz You're right! Thank you!
When I first heard this song in the Glastonbury set last year, my first thought was that this sounds like a song Khruangbin wished they'd written
Ha! First thing I thought and there's your comment ☺️
@@MM-vs2et I also think how the vocals and guitar line up in The Opposite is very Khruangbin-esque.
Thom and Johnny are beyond any doubt in their capability to continue producing mind-blowing stuff. And in the face of this great new piece, I want to truly acknowledge Tom Skinner and this totally relaxed drumming style.
Tom Skinner is awesome. Check out "A Hairdryer", previously known as "Blue Eyed Fox" that's my favourite Smile song.
Totally agree! There were so many great drum moments during the gig last Sunday. I am flashed!
Word. The drumming is so slick and nonchalant.
@@ernestovidales09 You weren't lying! I just listened to the album... his work on A Hairdryer gave me chills.
afrobeat
Radiohead was so good, so they've made radiohead 2
Was!?
Radiohead... 4? There's Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke's solo stuff and now The Smile. They all sound pretty similar for the most part.
Wtf Depression The Sequel
@Andrew Peterson Nigel was in Atoms for Piece. I'd consider him from Radiohead
this is radiohead for non virgins
This song is absolutely killer
I agree
Eh
@@brianlaudrupchannel elaborate
@@darr915 starts good and then you realise it's one of them looping repetitive radiohead songs that goes no where. Could be on the king of limbs
@@brianlaudrupchannel i do agree that it's repetitive, but I don't think it's as static or as underdeveloped as the songs on the king of limbs. I do think that most of the songs on the king of limbs are actually too overcomplicated, which is the opposite of this song, since it's pretty simplistic. I don't think repetitiveness in itself is a bad thing; it can be satisfyingly hypnotic in my opinion. For sure, this song isn't their greatest work, but I think it's still pretty good. I guess it kind of reminds me of Scatterbrain, very simplistic and repeating beat.
showing the entire genre how it's done with every new song!
dat bass, hypnotic❤️
Producers: how much bass do you want on this?
Thom and Jonny: yes
Yeah seriously, I can't even hear the bass, its so muddled. Idk whats up with the production for the bass. The rest tho, perfection.
its waaaaaaaaaaaay to much its fucking my ears and its killing the beauty of that bass line and also killing thoms voice im so disappointed now :(
@@MM-vs2et you don’t sound as cool as you think you do, just enjoy the music and stop nitpicking
@@yaggayaggaya9918 wtf are you even on about lmao, sound as cool as i think? That was a valid concern, that arose out of an obvious issue.
never enough bass
The phrasing in "We should give ourselves another chance" is so beautiful!
I wasn't sure I would like The Smile. After hearing this, I can't wait to hear more! Never doubt Thom !
And my boy Jonny 🙂🔪
Or Tom!
Or jonny
This pretty much confirms the theory that Jonny and Thom together are why Radiohead sounds like Radiohead. Those two together and it will always be fine, no matter what name it's under or who they collaborate with.
@@Alex_Mac_ idk they don't sound like Radiohead for me, there's something from pablo honey for sure, but ofc it's more punky then whole Radiohead discography
Headphones, lights out, close your eyes in front of the monitor. It's magic.
Damn, Thom, just give us the whole album already! Love this stuff.
DITTO! For a second tho I (wishfully) read "Thom just gave us" and frantically searched for the album lol.
@@cozm8 false hope :(
I know it’s taking forever
@@cozm8 same : ))
It's sooooooo good! 🥰🥰🥰 Definitely worth the wait...
Lovin the horns - Johnny’s fingerprints all over that section
facts
Johnny is really probably one of the most critical members when it comes to his extensive knowledge and playing skills.
That Brass Section is awesome. Reminds me of those on TKOL
I hear some woodwinds in there too 👌
When u want to headbang but can't decide where is the beat is going, u know its a banger....
Man that bass is killing it.....
That chorus is the most chill-sounding thing I’ve ever heard
This band is still growing and transfomating.. So cool!
The Smile didn't even officially put out their record and I'm already loving it. It's still a new masterpiece in the making.
This is a certified hood classic
I've already listened to this 4 times in a row
YES!!!!!
Love that long reverb on the snare
Gated Reverb is back in the building
QUE
Yeah, it sounds like the snare has a bounce
It has a bloom, I think. It's dreamy as all heck.
Mad groovy. Throwback to A Punch Up At a Wedding
omgggggg the chills when the brass came in!!!!!!
Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood can do no wrong.....always constantly only produce beautiful music for us lucky listeners!!!
Good song, bad video

In my eyes
@@OkaySoShit i kinda like the video tho, its showing the lyrics of the song one letter at a time
They went from Icons to Legends to Gods at this point…imagine still making Masterpieces in your 50s
Minimal Beatles crew w just Lennon & McCartney along with a top notch session drummer. Fantastic!!!
Muna
I absolutely LOVE this, can't wait to hear the whole album
The bass in this album is insane. I wasn't sure about this band, but I'm glad I tried it out because MAN, it's pretty good!
I love this!! Reminds me of Talk Show Host and other The Bends era stuff, but with a modern twist
it reminds me of the national anthem, and also talk show host
Yes talk show host vibes for definite
I think the similarity in tone to Identikit is way more strong with this
@@macworldleader I think this bassline smokes (pun intended) "National Anthem".
This is awesome!!! Another successful Thom/Johnny project...
So many years, so many songs, so much they given us and still creating the most beautiful compositions. Nothing has ever or will ever compare to these talented and passionate geniuses. Thank you for touring in the U.S.!!
I'm addicted to this new sound. I feel like a junkie... I need more!!!
I just watched them finish a set less than half an hour ago at Magazine in docklands, absolutely bloody electric, close enough to be in my living room best live gig ever for me !
So dope bro, stoked you got to enjoy that so thoroughly!
@@davidcoons89 Thank you ! I was so lucky to get that ticket !
Is there any way to watch it? I remember they did a live performance a long time ago but I didn’t have the chance to watch it and it’s gone 💀💀
@@gabrielp4181 Hi Gabriel the livestream of each of these three concerts was available for 2 days only for free to people that had actually gone to the concert (like myself) via the dice app and for about £15 while it was live streaming, to remote viewers, not sure of other methods.
I love that the essence of smoke is contextualized so perfectly with the trumpet and lyric in-sync, smooth elusive and exact with such delicate finess, so charming. It sounds like exactly what it describes. Love love love this!! 🙌

It's bliss 😌just when we needed um
Can’t wait for the show this weekend
OMG! I love this song so much. There is a lot of Sons of Kemet sound on this one that previous release doesn't have. The bass reminds me a lot of Atoms for Peace project.
QUÉ TEMAZO DIOSS, ESE BAJO ES HIPNOTICO
Thom + horns is a killer combo
Horns? I did not understand
The Daily Mail
Both of these tracks are the among the best to come out from them in ages.
insane how the bassline causes everything to shift somehow, like it creates its own pocket time signature ???
polymeters are tight ^^
Agreed. Strong Coldplay influence on that track.
@@Barrybeastmode lowkey insult.
@@Barrybeastmode the guys in this band basically created/inspired Coldplay
Breath of fresh air. Loving the horn arrangement.
You're the proof that age doesn't mean anything. Your music has this youth spirit more than ever...
You can be Old fart at 25,and Young at 40. UP to you
Sometimes i wonder if Thom and Jonny are aware of their greatness
I think they’re more aware of how much further they can go with their music.
Certainly not.
They produce extremly
boring music . . . . 🧿
Sounds like a mix of Can and Talk Talk, but lacking the talent of both!
@@ritahorvath8207 that ball on ur comment is the only pair u have m8 if u think it’s so boring why u replying to every fucking comment u spend a lot of time listening to something u find boring?
they wouldn't release it if they didn't think it was great
this song on the repeat, sound blessed
This made my day more bearable,
Thank you
They just don't miss, not a single time
Pop is dead? Lol but yeah Thom hasn’t missed in like 3 decades

Outstanding! Gives me the vibes of Metronomic Underground by Stereolab.
Great sound as always! Can't wait to listen the new album!
Now this puts a smile on my face…
Can't wait for this Saturday

when I knew this band was created I thought I wouldn't like it, not sure why, however after listening this amazing song and you will never work in television again I think I am a fan of the band.
that bassline is insane. i have been attempting to learn it for a month. FFS!
It's got an almost Stone Roses / Fool's Gold vibe to it
Beautiful. Just beautiful
Brilliant Track. Fantastic thanks!!!
Love this, can't wait for the next album :D
Thom & Jonny are the gift that keeps on giving. Love you guys so so much. ♥️♥️
I mean wow what a song! Loved it from 1st listen and I can’t wait for the whole album.
Brilliant , Smile on the face
seeing them live on Saturday and cannot wait...
Loved when Gilles Peterson played the Glastonbury performance of this on his BBC show last summer, and then again in december. Great to here the studio version ~
This is so refreshing. I am happy to be present at this point in time when Thom and Jonny are still making music. Also really like the attack, precision and amplitude of Skinner's drum playing! I'll be there for your live show tonight! So f*king excited!
There’s this immense bond between me and them, that i cannot put any words to describe myself how i feel when i listen to their songs. All i can say is that Radiohead has been healing me over decades. And now this… “sigh”
Thank you Thom Yorke, thank you The Smile and thank you Radiohead for sharing your gifts with us. You all much appreciated.
This pairs really well with 'Fools Gold'. Great riff.
Strong effort lads, one hour since release and love it already!
Oowee that's funky
Love it - playlisted it.
Got my ticket this morning to see them in Manchester in June - can't wait!!!

Wow… so cool! Love that bass line 🎸
loving the smile! Put out a live album with the studio album! Atoms for peace’s amok is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I really wish we got a live album too
I think I listen to Atom for Peace live more than the studio album. So full of energy. Love the ASL show most.
@@eracli0 I’d say it was about half and half for me. Those roundhouse shows sounded so damn good, plus you got the eraser tracks too. Saw them both nights at roseland in NY on their first tour and once are Barclays in NY on their second, so I needed to hear them live again after those shows. Some of the best shows I’ve ever seen
@@eracli0 Atoms for Peace live are like a whole other band - the ENERGY they infuse into the music... incredible
that bass and horn, so early 70's funk
The best use of cord structure I have heard in a long time
Just in case there are any music theory geeks in here (I'm sure there are) the polymeter verse groove is:
- 3 x 4/4 beat pattern = 12 beats (24 1/8 notes)
- 8 x 7/8 beat pattern = 28 beats (56 1/8 notes)
Total: 12 + 28 = 40 beats = 10 bars.
So the drums just play a 4/4 beat for 10 bars, and in that time, the 4/4 and 7/8 polymeter riff perfectly lines up again. Very clever..!
Regardless of whether they thought about it mathematically when writing it, it's still interesting to understand what's actually happening, and how it works.
Love this kind of discussion/debate after a new Yorke/Greenwood track drops! Thanks for sharing! I actually think there is a bar of 6/8 in the guitar riff...but either way the math adds up. The full 10 bar guitar cycle (to my ear) is:
4 x 4/4
2 x 7/8 (3+2+2)
1 x 6/8
1x 4/4
2x 7/8
1x 6/8
Total: 80 8th notes or 10 bars of 4/4 (which the drums are playing as you pointed out.) Either way still lines up with your math!
Side note: In the chorus, I hear a kind of hemiola going on. Yorke sings 3 x 5/8 patterns starting on the 2nd 8th note of the bar (15 eight notes + 1 8th rest= 16 eights total) over two bars (i.e. 16 8th notes.)
Fun Fun!
Also, they likely won’t be playing this song live 😂😂
Tony Allen (batterista) Rest in Peace
@@hiimty8540 ehm yeah they do, all the time lol. i've seen them do it.
es una forma de verlo, no la única. un abrazo, igualmente.

Loving the new music but tbh I'm just excited to see the album cover and aesthetic that'll go along with these minimalist experimental rock songs
