Always entertaining to watch!!
Thanks mate!
I love this weapon of a car!!! Can’t wait to see it again,, I know it’s going to be more cranky next time! 😁 great driving mate! See you on the track soon 👌
Biggest improvement was changing out the front brakes. Otherwise not a lot is different on the car for the moment. It's spent a good 12months catching some rest in the shed :P
Love it! You should arrange a MX5 track day, would be so fun
That'd be cool but there are already some good people out there how know how to organise and run events much better than I could!
I love it
Thanks mate!
My first time racing at wp I opened our garage door on pit lane and it was so foggy we couldn’t see the track😯😯.
Not the best track by far but it will punish mistakes, which is great.
I do recall on the day of this event in the video we were waiting in the pits until around 11am before they let cars on track.... that fog just wouldn't lift!
Watch this video in my miata done !
Thank you for watching :-)
Great laps Brendan! Was wondering about a couple of things... I noticed you did several left foot brake applications at different sections of the track, were they confidence taps or are you having issues with your brake booster? Also, it looks this track is a bit too tight to use your aero fully and Todd had a bit more mechanical grip. Were you running the same tires? Finally, is this with your old Kraken setup or the new manifold? Looks like it was a blast of a battle!
The car in front is running slicks on 17" rims I believe. My car has the Yokohama A050 on 15" rims. From memory he had about 10% more power, my car with about 10% lighter.
This is the older spec Kraken, and the left foot dabs were because this is the old Wilwood brake setup (car is now on AP brakes) that just couldn't cut the mustard and needed some encouragement before hitting the big braking moments.
@@Bbeavis Brendan I think you will find your car is considerably lighter than Todd's old car which was @ 1100kg. Being set up for enduros it is loaded with coolers etc. Hope we are seeing you at the MX-5 Nationals next year. The creek is well suited to time attack cars.
@@vernejohnson9010 How interesting, the NA must be running a lot more power then as it just rockets away down the straights compared to my NB.
What's the warning light behind the shifter for? It's on when you are off throttle. ;) Most probably not that important as it is not in line of sight and quite dim. Awesome car. Thanks for the cool vids.
Orange warning light is a coolant low-pressure warning.
what was your best time? beaten your 1:02 yet? waiting on the kraken low mount vid!
Hey Matt, the best time from the event in this video was a 1:02.9. Have not had a chance to get the car out again for about a year now thanks to viruses and a few other things going on.
Hi! I drive a NB too and I'm struggling a bit with heel and toe because of the pedal positioning. Have you done any modifications to yours to get the accelerator lower in comparison to the brake pedal? I'm thinking about a smaller wheel moved a bit more towards, me since that would also help but haven't had the time to install one yet. Thanks for the great track footage yet again!
Hi, it is all the original mazda pedal setup. But my steering wheel is much closer to the drive than the stock position, would highly recommend doing that.
I moved wheel back aswell and used aftermarket pedal and bolted it off center closer to brake pedal to make it easier for my big bird legs and Ronald McDonald feed 😁
@@Bbeavis Just as I thought. I have a Kirkey seat mounted to the floor so I think I'll have the needed space if I bring the wheel a bit closer. I just have the trouble of changing it back to stock atleast once a year which is making postpone it.
Do you want to watch 8 mins of track time in an mx5....yes please!
Hah, thanks 38!
noice
😆
Alright...this is probably going to be the "Face-palmed" question of the upload...while watching the insert vid of your footwork (Nice btw), noticed your flooring is bare with no heat shielding...Dude...don't your feet get hot? Seriously? Great save on the smoky-pucker-inducing moment 👊 too!
It can get hot, but honestly never noticed the floor heat while actually driving. The exhaust is on the other side of the car so maybe a passenger would be a little less comfortable.
As a one time passenger, I can confirm that it gets hot on the passenger side - and that was pre-turbo. By the way, after Brendan showing me how to drive in that passenger session, I cut 6 seconds off my PB in my next session in my car, having learned some braveness.
@@demon1954 Thank you Dave.
June 2019, really shows how slow this year has been
I know right 😥
not what you normally as a @0:09 second door slammer...
Haha, quite true :-)
I noticed that the kick to the brakes seem to got consistently heavier on the later laps, were you getting brake fade at that point?
This is the old Wilwood front brake setup (car is now on AP brakes) that just couldn't cut the mustard and needed some encouragement before hitting the big braking moments.
They were getting too hot (fluid/rotors etc all very toasty) and seemed to suffer from pad fade or pad knock off as well.
@@Bbeavis Do you now have bigger wheels to fit bigger brakes?
@@demon1954 The wheels are still 15x9's. The brakes are very snug in there. May I refer your attention here: ua-cam.com/video/6XtCV6trMOs/v-deo.html
@@Bbeavis you’ll find the brake pads rattle away from the rotors when you hit the ripple strips very common in the v8 supercar racing. A tap on the peddle brings them back ready for the next corner
That other Miata has a lot of jam, what kind of turbo setup doesn't have? Also, why does he take such a wide line through the last turn onto the front straight?
Jerry that car had a gtx2863 gen 1 turbo, gtx2860r gen 2 now. 233kw. I take such a wide line to make the straight longer, back on the power earlier. In my sons naturally aspirated car I change my lines
What Herring said, it's his car!^
Which final drive you have in mx5?
Diff ratio is 3.6:1
This is really fast. Why you press the brakes in the middle of the straight?

Could just be me but it sounded down on power compared to usual. She running okay?
You have a fine ear. The boost target PID settings weren't perfect for this event, some subsequent running in the car was much nicer and the boost levels much smoother.
@@Bbeavis :P thanks! Glad you got it figured out! Brought the power in sooner?
Not necessarily sooner, but much more smoothly.
Its kinda scary seing a na losing traction when accelerating
350 or so horse power will do that I guess.
233kw , 312hp. Didn’t matter at the end of the day Brendan did it 😉
Doh, sorry I stand corrected.
Is this about 320bhp against about 350? Good job it was only a time trial, 'cos otherwise you might have been tempted to have a race!
My car is around 300hp I think from memory the NA had about 315ish.
@@Bbeavis Do you reckon you'd have had him if you were on slicks? I used to have the same issue with Wilwoods. I didn't know what to do about it though. This would no doubt account for why I got different amounts of wear on the pads on either side of the calipers.
@@demon1954 I ended up setting a faster PB on the day (fastest car of the whole event, and new MX-5 lap record in fact). Undoubtedly the slicks had more mechanical grip, but I have no intention of moving away from the semi-slick tyres for the moment. The car is very happily using the AP brakes now and the Wilwoods have gone to a new home.
@@Bbeavis Well done! I guess going to full slicks has repercussions for the suspension, and if they allow you to go faster then you have more brake wear, and if you can be on the throttle for longer, then you produce more heat, everywhere, etc etc ..........
@@demon1954 Precisely! It's that infinite cycle of... more faster = more consumables = more wear and tear = more hurty on the wallet.
