Interesting fact: Ernie Irvan won at Daytona twice (1991 Daytona 500 and 1992 Pepsi 400) and Sterling Marlin finished 2nd to him both times in that 22 Maxwell House Junior Johnson ride. Tables turned when Marlin won in Ernie's old car in the 1994 Daytona 500 with Irvan finishing 2nd in the #28 Texaco Ford.
This is the NASCAR i know and love. The sights, sounds and feels; the cars, drivers and sponsors; the WINSTON CUP!!! As far as this race goes... go Davey! I don't know what today's racing is, it's nothing that I recognize.
Unless you went to a 400 in July at Daytona before they went to night racing you could never believe how hot it was in the stands. I lived 60 miles west of Daytona for 40 years.
This was weird seeing Richard Petty lead a lap (much less five) because to my knowledge, up until this point, I had never seen him do so. I never even saw him win a race in my lifetime. Imagine my shock when I found out that he had won 200.
He won 2 races in 1984.dover he ran a illegal carburetor and he won at Daytona 500 that year.Reagen showed up at the 500 and Reagan's daughter started the engines at Dover.you think it's a coincidence .a election year in 1984 and 1992.it got conspiracy written all over this .but when your young you really cant understand any of this
With 2 different drivers at that... Runt shoulda went to work for RCR after 1996 he coulda helped Dale win those last few Daytona 500's of the 90's instead of him only getting 1998...
I remember them talking about finding Dale Earnhardt to replace Richard when he went out with fatigue. Didn't happen but that would of been some kind of strange to see Dale drive the 43 haha
He left the track already, Dale didn't stick around after his engine quit. I think Dale was too big for Richard's seat anyway, Baker couldn't fit in it, had to get Eddie B to drive who is like 5-10, 170, much smaller.
Thank you for posting this! I remember that I had to work that Sunday back then and did not get a chance to see my favorate driver lead the race, Richard Petty!
I was at this race with my father and a friend of the family. I remember seeing Air Force One flying in, the limo speeding through the streets and then seeing the Former President arriving at the track. To top off my experience, the Former President came into the stands only 10-15 seats from us and I was young to where I could walk the seats and get his autograph. Secret Service kept me back but Mr. Bush pulled me into the circle, shook my hand and signed the Magazine with Richard Petty's face on it. I have it framed now. I wish that there was video that showed him in the stands where I could have possibly been captured shaking his hand. If anyone out there in Nascar world knows where that footage may be if it exists, please contact me.
This was my first NASCAR race, at 6 years old. We got caught in a huge traffic jam and didn't get there 'til about lap 70. I didn't know the difference. It was awesome.
Back when Nascar was at it's best. Back when big name sponsors didnt rule the sport. Some of the best racing was back in the 90's. I hate the new points system. A time when you had a superspeedway stretch of races and the short track stretch with 2 road courses.
This was my second NASCAR race I attended. I remember seeing Air Force landing. I still have the program. Unfortunately it wasn't signed by the King himself. Great race. Rudd finished 7th :)
@@phil1333 theres alot of empty seats at the lower levels.the king almost had a heat stroke. 1992's one of the best Nascar seasons ever, so much drama behind it and some good racing too. Wide open with no real favorites. I wish the still did this race at Day time, far more cooler than another night race, even if it is hot outside!

Man is it just me or did Earnhardt get screwed over by Nascar and the Ford teams in '92 after having won and dominated so many races and championships and being the guy to beat up to that point? Very unusual to see the black 3 car have mechanical problems early in the race especially at Daytona where he always either won or absolutely dominated at in those days.
Oh my God. You are such a whiner. Earnhardt never got screwed over ever by NASCAR. They helped him every step of the way! They were just so far behind in 1992 that even the sanctioning body couldn't do anything to close the gap for them but not to worry, in 1993 and 1994 the fix was in!
The Chevy's were just garbage in 1992, their top driver was Rudd who finished 7th in points. The Fords had a definite advantage but it wasn't a specific slight against Earnhardt
I see that now, I never saw the event to even know what happened. IMO I never liked Petty because he hung on for way too long even to when he was a non-competitive footnote in races. I have little respect for Jimmie Johnson and the 48 team because they seem to relish dominance/perfection and hate it when they don't get their way. Knaus is a cheater. This year Jimmie has kicked everyone's butts and only Kahne has won a race. Jimmie has no problems. Something don't add up. What's your reasoning?
Look at Kurt Busch/Jimmie Johnson deal at Pocono in 2011, Johnson clearly showed he is an ass there, basically acting like Kurt should move over for him and Johnson did not like that Kurt raced him clean. Johnson does a decent job of putting a "mask" on in public, but he's a fake who only cares about himself and he whines like a child when he thinks he is not being raced fairly. Johnson made Kurt look like the bad guy there. Also, tell me where to find that video.
NASCAR should have just ran T-Birds, Luminas, Cutlasses and the Grand Prix forever. Those race cars look so much better than what they are racing these days. I can't stand the Gen 6 cars with the ugly ass splitters, the too tall for the rest of the car roof heights, the ridiculously tall rear spoilers that are twice as tall as they were in these days and the hideous rear quarter panels that almost drag the pavement and hang down 4 inches lower where they meet the bottom of the rear bumper. And as if that wasn't enough, I hate how flat the sides of the current cars are. And do we really need the cheesy ass exhaust pipe decals? What a joke. The modern cars are just so damn ugly that it has ruined the sport for me. Surely NASCAR could figure out some way to build safe race cars that also look good. If they ever do, maybe I'll start watching again. Until then, I'll get my racing fix here on YT watching these races from the good old days.
Richard could not be on the pole, he didnt have the Busch qualifying sticker on the fender ...I certainly know that this whole lineup was fake...Petty even said that he got out there and lead a few laps for the show and then let off and let those guys race...WTH??
Never heard of anybody that won a pole out of respect or given a position, on any circuit anywhere, for respect alone...as far as I'm concerned, its fake not real, rigged ...Nascar has been fake for many years, but just like Pettys 200th win was faked
Hard not to have cold chills watching the King lead those laps....
Love watching Petty sawing on the wheel with no gloves and having that wet cloth in his mouth

Classic Nascar is awesome.
All the drivers got orders from France the director to let petty lead a few laps early

Yes

No. I just think they did it, out of respect for the man. Richard is the king, after all and this was his last start at Daytona.

How come King Richard was permitted to race with no fireproof gloves? In all other series this is mandatory.
I think it was the grandfather clause that allowed him to drive with no fireproof gloves.
Same reason Earnhardt was allowed to race with his belts not mounted in the car properly: comfort.
