    Happy to hear this from a great teacher and guitarist, in 20 years I have never practiced with a metronome but like Guthrie said, jam along with records or riffing and soloing with drum machines and loopers.

      It all makes sense. Since I’ve started doing that too a year and a half ago, my humble skills have developed much better. You also develop great ear when just jamming with a bunch of different tracks from various records!
      Nice backing tracks by the way MrChusss 👍🏼

      @@HPKazan but what about when you wanna record your own songs? dont you need the metronome

      @@jorgeguitar2540 A late answer, but I guess you don't necessarily need it. Nowadays lots of modern music is recorded with click track, but back in the day many bands didn't and lots of older songs there are natural speeding up and slowing down in tempo. Like from going from chorus to verse things might speed up a little or the whole song might speed towards the end. Song might start with slower tempo and be more not as busy at the beginning, but speed up and get more busy in general towards the end and the epic finale.

    Whenever I'm recording guitar, especially a solo, I have to fight myself to leave notes in that are not perfectly on the beat. It drives me crazy recording and re-recording and re-recording the solo because "I always hit that one note a 32nd off" and I want to get it right. But after I spend the hours exhausting myself to get it as perfect as possible, it sounds 100% correct, but at the same time it also sounds off. The "feel" is missing. I've learned to record a handful of takes of a solo, pick the one that's closest to being on time, then I close the DAW and don't listen to it for an hour or two. When I listen with fresh ears, it usually sounds great. The end result is better and its not as exhausting because I'm doing less recording and editing.

      I hear you. I'm still a bit of a beginner(so forgive me of I'm wrong) and when I find a riff or lick I want to learn, sometimes I burn it out and lose interest in it before I master it(it's well within my skill range to play). But like you said if I travel around the fret board(like you taking your listening break) and dabble in different areas and practice different things for only like 10 20 minutes and when I come back to the original piece of music, I feel moved again by it. So maybe when recording a challenging solo and you can't get it correct but you know you can play it, instead of trying to get a bunch of recordings in to pick from, maybe jam around for a half an hour just playing stuff you know. When you can back to the solo I'm sure it will be a fresh start without the frustrations. And who know you might just nail the solo.(:

      Just quantize if its only a 32nd off

    • @alexjackson8841
      @alexjackson8841 2 роки тому

      @@NoNames17899 That’s the lazy way to do it. Using quantise will hinder your progress as a musician, since you’re just removing the need to force yourself to be great at keeping in time. it’s also tiny little imperfections that makes music sound natural. Quantising it to be perfectly on time could arguably take away some of that, although to be fair probably not really if it’s only one 32nd note. Either way, definitely bad practice to ever use it for anything more than a simple midi track

    Guthrie is an amazing player, musician and teacher. I have such fond memories with Guthrie at ACM, even as a bass player I could learn so much from him on what music is all about and how to use it to communicate with people!

    Totally agree with Guthrie re the metronome . I learned to play by listening to records and later on using drum machines . I’ve always encouraged my guitar students to do the same !

    Very useful information. I actually find my scale and other practice is more efficient without a metronome as Im not worried about timing aswell as learning so its not like multitasking

    When did Guthrie start playing? I have a feeling if his parents would have got him a microscope instead of a guitar he would have cured cancer, and covid in a week.

      In absolutely none of this is that implied.
      He's one of the most modest and humble guitarists out there on the planet, and he's EXTREMELY generous in sharing his knowledge with what he knows.
