Well it takes a lot more skill for this music and this was 2014 and prog like this and other modern prog has gained a lot more popularity and a crowd nowadays
I like that even though Guthrie is an amazing inspiration and virtuoso, he's still human. "Sometimes it's nice to go for - well not that, that's terrible!"
Then good news; you can work on the bend for a few weeks and bend as well as Guthrie, maybe not as wide, but most of his (or anyone's) bends are between the range of zero and a whole step, occasionally a minor third, and rarely a major 3rd, but if you take the most useful ones; whole and half steps, then you certainly can do them as well as GG. I'm not saying anything about being as good as him overall because obviously that's nearly impossible. I'm just saying don't go overboard with the admiration to the point where you have a mystique built in your mind that every note he plays is always better than your own best sounding note: that's just false and approaching an unhelpful level of hero worship. Oops, just noticed how ancient your comments are. Oh well, in case you still feel that way, I'm going to go ahead and let it stay. Just don't complain about how old it is because I don't always check the dates.
I wasn't playing guitar that much lately but like a month ago i saw this guy and now i'm playing all days and i'm writing music and i'm loving it. IT's like he opened a new world of music to me. It's amazing! Love his work with the Aristocrats also.
Ganondorf84 Same. He basically reinvented playing for me. I just became a fan of his music about two weeks ago, and I was able to see him live at Berklee earlier this week. I feel so inspired to play now.
I believe what you are trying to suggest is speech lessons taught by Guthrie... and I imagine he would have an incredibly sarcastic ‘lesson’ response to your comment. “Here’s how to talk, move your upper lip and lower lip in opposite direction while using your voice box to say a word... congratulations now you have ‘talked’.” LOL I don’t say this to be a joke, I only say this because I met him after an Aristocrats show in Nashville and we had a good conversation and he was probably the MOST sarcastic person I have ever met! It is just his mixture, mixture of his intelligence and British humor.
+Kenny Ken He studied English litterature at uni before he decided to pursue music. He's a very smart well educated man who enjoys language. Nothing more to it than that.
I think we can all agree that Guthrie is a phenomenal guitarist. The fact that he has such finesse, an obvious knack in acquiring tone. . .and understands the persuit of clarity with any and all of his effects, just optimizes his otherworldly playing ability!
"[..] which is music that not many people like". Damn! Guthrie IS the definition of ´humble´. He can literally shred the face off any legendary metal guitarist dead or alive, with surgical precision and he acts like he just ordered pizza or something.
If you keep countig when he stops the loop, you will notice he never stops thinking in the time even when he's explaing other stuff! 3,4 and it's back!!!
Truly amazing what Guthrie can do with a reverb and a looper... Well that being said, it comforts me in the idea of adding both the dito and the HOF to my own pedalboard... :p
He did a clinic at my uni when I was in my first year and it was a two hour thing, but it was like an hour of informative guitar stuff and an hour of comedy. It was the best thing I've ever seen, even if I don't like the whole instrumental guitar thing.
I am totally pro instrumental. Besides Guthrie, Alex Hutchins, I like to listen Steffen Schackinger & Johnny A. All brilliant artist. I'm just not lyrically driven & most (not all) lyrics I can actually understand seem pretty goofy to me.
I think it's always been the same. A large percentage of the population like cheesy mass produced music and then the rest splinter into tiny fragments and go out and find quality music that's specific to their desires. Leave the brainwashed to their Simon Cowell noise pollution because the rest of us will always know where to find what we're looking for.
Zoë Holloway The only thing that matters is stage presentation and a swath of preskool lyrics to enhance modern mainstream mediocrity **dullcoweyesstare**
Then I can stop it when I get bored... 3-4 AND ITS BACK! BA ha ha. Every time I watch him interview, I see a very subtle but hilarious sense of humor. ... Oh yeah. Fantastic guitarist too...
He seems like such a down to earth, fun, regular guy even though hes an absolutely amazing musician. Doesnt seem to have any ego at all. I'd love to hang out with him sometime.
No f'ing wonder this cat is SoOo ridiculous on the guitar. He's not just one, but MULTIPLE guitarists living inside of one person. 1:46 "so WE like the koko boost" I had a feeling this was the case
It's 12/18/2019 now & because of this very video last year I added 4 of these pedals to my extensive pedal collection. The Anadime chorus, The SL drive, the Flashback & the full size Hall of fame. And I've looked for & can't yet find a few others. All excellent pedals. Thanks Guthrie !
That "backwards" guitar sound reminds me of some Indian music I love, Bravo - I'll be needing one of those! Thanks to Mr. Govan for showing us the works and his new guitar, this guy plays things I cannot even dream of.
I've lately noticed that guys like Guthrie are always changing their gear. So when you hear a really nice box on his board, you get one for yourself and realise later that you still have yours and hes moved in to something else, or completely changed over to a digital muti- effects processor!!
One of those subtle Guthrie moments where he's showing off a little, but he's not drawing attention to it obviously, and it takes an educated, acute listener to pick up on it. I would have never caught that if I didn't read your comment. Nice one
Guthrie is grounded in the classic blues-rock stuff (Hendrix, BB King, Cream, Jeff Beck, SRV, The Beatles). He's got that organic and blues flavor in his playing. That's what sets him apart from his wannabe peers. Most people often go on about the technical and flashy-side of his playing.
incredible guitar player, I watch every live song I can see on YT, phenom, you know you are watching a living legend in the making. Sound over the top, watch him play.:)
Well thank you for your point of view , you may be right ,..and probably are if you only use a few pedals like 3 or 4 ,,but when the numbers go up to 9 and 10 I think its time to look at the multi effect unit ..bearing in mind that the amp itself will possibly have overdrive channel .. chorus and reverb as standard ..maybe
Nevermind the fact the he's one of the most well rounded, versatile and talented guitar players on earth, he also sounds like a very intelligent and well spoken man.
He looks so much like my uncle it freaks me out, the way he looks, talks, acts, everything... My uncle is a genius like him too but my uncle doesn't play instruments.
You probably didn't notice, but when he added the loop back in it was still in time. The man's sense of tempo is so good he can casually talk and still keep time.
His volume pedal might be more effective if it were placed in the effects loop of the amplifier he's plugged into, that way it could induce a true silence..
I'd pay concert prices just to hear this dude talk for 2 hours about literally anything.
He is probably one of the most intelligent rock musicians. Just like Brian May. Now I know it't THE HAIR. :D
lol...man, that's been my mistake all along; hair neglect. :)
You could be mesmerized by this guy talking about bath sponges
Same. I've probably watched this 1000x
I’m sure he actually is intelligent. But 70% of that is the accent :P
"It's small, it sounds like a duck. What's not to like?"
~ Guthrie Govan
"It pleases me."
thanks for stealing my comment... LOL
It was never your comment. You just repeated what Guthrie said -,-
Hehe. I want one.
Amazing guy!
he sometimes he refers to himself as "we," so I'm guessing he's infused with some sort of symbiotic entity that grants him godly guitar skills
He's the eddie brock of guitar
"It's music that not many people like." saddest line in this video.
Also the funniest
At least the toxicity of the fanbase doesn't go as high as it is with certain mainstream acts.
Well it takes a lot more skill for this music and this was 2014 and prog like this and other modern prog has gained a lot more popularity and a crowd nowadays
@@quinnmitchel4075 for sure I love my prog/psych rock community
@@tomvesely4008 I don't think I've ever met a toxic aristocrats fan

I hate how that thing he randomly loops at the end is greater than anything I've ever written; what a player.
"random?" not quite, he knows exactly what he's doing haha
Jeremy Velasco I meant how seemingly naturally it was created! :)
@@jeremyvelasco1443still an improvised loop. Damn good
The guy majored in the English language which you can hear because his phrasing is just hilarious. Just his way of picking words is amazingly amusing.
Robert Fennis "lovely virginal guitar sound"
Robert Fennis He left Oxford Uni. after year.
Largactyl Kid Check out Alex Hutchins - another English super player - the new breed!
Robert Fennis You're right, I honestly watch this because I find him so entertaining.
+Daniel Urry Greg too. very articulate
I love how a single bent note by Guthrie sounds better than anything I can play on the guitar. ;D
Dito
I've been trying to transcribe that single bent note and practice it daily and it still sounds like crap compared to Guthrie.

I've watched this several times now. The combination of Guthrie's wonderful playing and awesome parlance keeps me coming back.
Omar Ali couldn't have said it better
Guthrie always has a sarcastic one liner for everything he says
British humor
Most people just don't get us Brits and our humor. :D
No we don't but we put up with ya just the same:) forever allies :)

Guthrie could make a lot of money giving talking lessons.
He does. Performs live and usually gives group lessons / Clinics in the area they are touring.

as a non native speaker he sounds to me like a very articulate english speaker, which is good
He used to study at the University of Oxford.
He talks like a nervous stoner.
"...but a roman stole it from me." - He truly is the Jesus of guitar
Oh I get it now :]
Still don't get it
He was touring in Rome a few years ago and the van got broke into and quite a bit of equipment was stolen
I come back to this vid every year or so. Brings me so much joy
Someone get me a shirt that says, "Gay for Guthrie" on it.

Unfortunately he's right - instrumental-only music in all forms is criminally underrated.
In my opinion, Guthrie Govan is the most complete guitarist nowadays. He can play any style, with such cleanliness and mastery.
Agree.👍
Alan Moore, Guthrie and Gandalf are all the same person, just don't let him trick you, don't you see? Superb showcase of pedals btw...
If you keep countig when he stops the loop, you will notice he never stops thinking in the time even when he's explaing other stuff! 3,4 and it's back!!!
"I have no choice but to stop at this point". What a great way to end a video
He's just as friendly in person, and really patient after a show in making sure he talks to everyone who wants to say hi. A really nice guy.
This guy was one of my tutors at Uni about 8 year ago...I've never seen or heard a better guitarist! Guthrie just doesn't miss a note!
1 minute noodling around with the ditto and he makes one of the best funk backing tracks on youtube.
This man is such an elegant and incredible guitarist. Love event to just HEAR him talk.

better demo of these pedals in 11 minutes than the demos of all of these pedals individually. why cant people demo pedals that arent famous?
Excellent ! Very well done for those of us that want to know Guthrie's secrets :-)
This awesome dude is a freak athlete of the guitar. A true master. Very intelligent, funny and humble too, it seems. Respect!

That tiny SL pedal is awesome!

I love that chorus pedal.
"It's small and souns like a duck - what's not to like?"

A really enjoyable video - informative and witty. That's the way to videos make guitar stuff.
ahh new Guthrie vid saves the day! =) i secretly hoped that he might also answer the question to "What do they mean?..." love him
His live show must be reminiscent of river dance haha. So many pedals!
He does magic with the ditto pedal.
