As a new yorker for most of my life I can safely say that alot of drains are always covered by trash( now Im not pointing fingers), im just saying sometimes the whole purpose to prevent flooding is disabled by people throwing trash, and lack of help to clean or initiative.
Shouldn't it be sanitations job to unclog those drains i mean some are getting paid six figures a year they should do their job to keep the city clean
@@jaystackz3425 you do realize that there aren’t that many of them compared to the ppl of NY right?
@@jaystackz3425 maybe the ppl of NY should be better people.
@@ScooterLee-ei1epthere’s plenty of beautiful ppl here in New York. Y’all really let other ppl(right wing talking heads) tell you who others are? You judge a whole city based on ppl who are paid to tell you what you want to hear? Y’all hate other Americans based on where they live and what others tell you.
Exactly
Many people should return their drivers licences. You can drive through that water no issue, even in a sedan. You just have to go much slower, so the water level wouldn't build up and hydrolock the engine
I would've assumed you're supposed to power thru to maintain momentum..
@@gnarlytothemax No. The car has enough power to start moving in the water, no need to speed up
Damn I didn’t know that I would’ve sped up so fast😔😔🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ now I know😍
Why would we know this 😂😭. They don’t teach this in drivers Ed. Nice try thinking you’re above us 🎉
@@camg418 Exactly! In fact they teach you the exact opposite, to not drive through bodies of water LoL
A lot of these cars are driving too fast in this kind of weather.
COVID 19 drivers
Nyers.....
It’s nyc lmaoo
They are so stupid. They see cars ahead of them making 5 foot tidal waves and they still speed right thru. They deserve to be stuck.
I know thers aLot of Unskilled or just basically Wrecklessdrivers Who just want to risk others-
I ain't gonna lie, watching this makes me kind of happy I don't live in NYC anymore. LOL.
You shouldn't have to watch this video to be happy about that.
@Phillip Banes no it doesn't! Stop getting emotional! It's effeminate!
Espino had a pretty chill attitude about it, hope he gets his car fixed up and it's not too bad

When I was a kid in the 80's growing up in the Rockaways, we used to get flooding quite often, especially in the Hammels and Edgemere sections. I think the older american cars were able to withstand driving through flood waters like this. New cars today, with so many sensors and electrical components, and so low to the ground, can break down even by driving through a regular puddle. Once that CPU panel is breached the whole engine goes out of whack and it breaks down. The new EV's with their batteries on the bottom cannot withstand flood water, especially if it's salt water.
Actually the EVs need waterproofing or else the lithium could ignite if exposed or shorted.
Older cars had intakes on top of engine. You now have one running down into your front fender.
It's always a long way from home when stuff like this is going on.... even if home is only a few blocks down the road
This is why I leave my car at home every time they talk about anything water or storm related. I check the weather every time too.
Scary…Water is extremely powerful and can do a lot of damage. Imagine trying to maneuver through this without boots in cold weather.
And the dirt! You can catch every disease 🦠 possible in that water. 🤦🏼♀️
Wow, this is crazy!!
As a native New Yorker, I have never seen the FDR look like this!
😣
😥😥😥
Hurricane Sandy showed us. It's gonna be like this every year from now on.
i live in the area, nj last time i saw something like this was when hurricane ida struck in 2021
How do electric cars handle this situation?
they burn. technically gas engines are water proof - but it needs air from the air filter, which can be flooded by driving through water.
I drove my Etron uphill…against rushing water several years ago with…with water up to my door handles…no issues
No ordinary cars of any kind should be driving through water this deep.
They catch on fire and burn for about 12 hours
What about horse and buggy?
Cannot stress the stormwater run-off and the importance of it all. I learned a lot about it during my university years doing GIS. This is crazy.
That reminds me of hurricane Sandy 🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊🌊
City people, you can’t be barreling though water like that. It’s possible, but don’t outrun your wake. Also cars will float if it’s too deep. There’s so much that should be said to this along with just don’t do it. Water doesn’t compress so well once it gets in your intake and floating cars equal drowning.
grateful my wife is sleeping at home safely. be careful everyone. get home safely
In New York there’s no such thing as slowing down. Those floods indicate that all the drainage ditches are clogged up and have not been pumped out. Governor should be notified.
We dont know the word slow down....we are not cali
Yo here in Buffalo we just spent over 48 hours without electricity. Just heard the dogs out with the search party. What was a search and rescue is now a recovery operation. Painful way to go. The death toll is around 40 right now. Gonna be well over 100 after they’re able to reach everyone.
I know so sad. I heard about this man who froze to death last I read it was at 25ppl my goodness 40 that's so sad.
Thoughts and prayers from upstate NY. Beautiful city but this blizzard hitting Buffalo right now is the worst I've seen in my years. Be as safe as you can 💜

As Joe said...it was going to be a "Cold Dark Winter"
The reality is, the infrastructure here in the US needs improvements. I was down in Maryland for Christmas. There were spotty power outages all over. My sister had power but it was limited to a point where her boiler wouldn't turn on. They also limited gas usage. She had no heat on Christmas day!
Prayers up to you all and so sad to the lives lost in this blizzard. My heartfelt condolences to the victims family and friends!
Nice video. I wonder how the area looked after we got those very low freezing temperatures the day after.
i was the person pushing the car helping others ,EASTRIVER floods the FDR drive just like Hurricane Sandy in 2012 😱
U want w bag of chips?👏
God bless you because it was freezing . I can't believe so many people were out driving around.
Thanks

Great coverage as always Adam and Merry Christmas!
Omg the guy with the Acura I'm in love Espino
and that's why Adam
drives a four wheel drive truck.
When you speed through a flooded area you just flood the engine compartment stalling out the car
Not if you splash through which is what I do through a deep puddle. Before the tide comes back in I'm out.
Now your in New York 🎶 concrete jungle where dreams are made…
In typical German fashion, a newer Mercedes stalls out in a little water lol!
European stalls and shorts with moisture not to mention floods. lol
Is it safe in mist?
@@ouknow1446 if the mist lands on top of the car, yeah. 🤣
Stay home and you won't have to worry.
Exactly why risk
That or if you have to go out just take train
Thank you for sharing. Thank you for your hard work. Thank you for your effort. We appreciate you. God bless you.
Whatever happened to the money 💰 for the infrastructure 😃 is a proper drainage system included 🤔
The drainage system only works when there is some place for it to drain. The Full moon and high tide coincided with the storm. Some homes flooded in other areas losing electricity and Now the temperatures are plunging to bitter colds this evening. Friday, 12/23/22
A lot probably went to Union Contractors for "Early Design Concept" BUDGETS that will be "priced" several more times & re-engineered... The Contractors will blame the additions/changes the project engineers made at last moment on why the entire project is 100 million & 2 years over budget!
" All this money in Manhattan and they can even unclog the drains " well that sums up the American government right now in general.
*can't
Obviously you haven’t been to NY, Brooklyn and so on. Every day is like the day before never happened (street cleaners)
Prayers 🙏 for everyone to drive safe blessings 🙏
This happened to me with my first car, nyc gets a lil rain and everything floods
Well that night it wasn’t just a lil rain. Around 4am when this happened I too was driving down Lexington Ave, and it was a torrential downpour for a good 45 minutes or so. You could barely see out the windshield with wipers going full blast.
Drains get clogged when not under use.
be safe out there, NYC.
hazardous weather this weekend.
/bklyn 👑
You were driving by that silver car earlier. AND ITS STILL THERE.
"i work for transit i should have taken the bus home" 😂😂
That sucks one of the main reasons not to try that is that especially if you have a cold air Intake is that water will be sucked into the engine from the cold air intake or any air intake that sits close to the wheel well the other reason else electrical parts get wet never a good idea to do that or take that risks
Hope that as it gets warmer and the snow melts, it doesn't get any worse. Stay safe. Now Years Eve might be a huge mess
Oh ShizNit! That was last nightTt! DamMmMm.....I'm glad I wasn't working Smh Glad everyone is alright most importantly. 🙏

I wonder why NYC Department of Public Works didn't close the service road off the FDR due to flooding?
They’d have to be actually doing their jobs for that to happen!!
Being in Houston, Texas this is normal to me I've driven through flooded streets before. I'm a fan of NYC specifically Manhattan. Once I move up there this isn't going to be an issue for me.
this is why i want an off-road suv. can drive it in basically any terrain.
If you've lived and driven in NYC for any length of time, you should know that when there is ANY chance of heavy rain, bad storms, you stay the hell away from the FDR, or any low level crossing near the East or Hudson river. Just look at some of those guys pretending they are driving in a NASCAR race. And if i lived within blocks of either side, don't park in any underground parking lot.
Everyone in this comment section is wrong. It all depends on where the air intake is on your specific car. If the water line is below your air intake you want to proceed very very slowly, if it’s above it and you’ve already entered the water you want to kill the ignition as quick as possible and call for a tow as soon as possible so The cars computer won’t be irreparably damaged. And I’m not forgetting about water getting in the exhaust but that would be the least of the three problems you’d have so….
I've been on this road in flood conditions and it's usually fine. It is right next to the river but was designed well. But I think the temporary lane barricades were impeding the proper runoff of water.
I think the same thing it's going to be a real issue if that water doesn't go nowhere and starts to freeze up I hope not because the people in Buffalo had a hard this past week
Designed well? This looks like a nightmare. I've never had to drive through an entire road with 3ft of water, but that's just me.
Why didn’t DOT block that lane due to the flood.
Because when the rain started coming down heavy like that it was 4am. I was driving down Lexington Ave, and the rain just starting pouring rapidly. Almost complete whiteout conditions.
@@Will_Bx_NYC_718 WOW!
I saw a couple GX460s pushing through no problem, one heck of a vehicle!
We're going to need a bigger boat!
You need a boat & car in one.
This is why I converted my car into a boat for times like these. 😀
Use to pray for times like this to rhyme like this
This gives me Anxiety 🤦🏻♀️ Just to know I have to drive back to NY to drop off my grandson back home to my Daughter on New Years Eve smh I hate Driving On BRIDGES 🤦🏻♀️
Prayers safe travels mami
When we have storms like this in Orlando from the hurricane you have to have big trucks or SUVs like Ford F-150s if you try to drive through that with small cars your car is going to get messed up
I definetly don't miss that ratttt dump of a hometown of mine NYC😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Poor sod. Very dangerous to have your back to traffic like that though.
A co-worker died exactly like that, his car stopped in the freeway around 5am when it was still dark and he got out and was in front when another car came and hit the back of his car at 60mph which in turn hit him.
What people don't understand is driving through water fast will cause your serpentine belt to come off go slow..
Never stop that’s the key to not getting stuck as long as the muffler doesn’t go under water
Or your intake sucking up water
@Junior Michel Esperant and guess where alot of cars intakes are located at?
@@O1dmanwalker some are all the way down behind the front wheels especially modified cars with aftermarket cold air intakes lol
Tell me you know nothing about cars without telling me you know nothing about cars
@David R I'm a truck driver do know how many times I heard people say I saw the truck make it so I thought I could it's hilarious and sad
The last thing you want to do is drive fast over watery roads. If you do have to cross water on the road enter at 1-2mph then drive at 3-4mph to avoid engine flooding.
Seems many of these drivers need to learn how to drive in rain. Plenty of them were going way too fast!
That's was funny. That girl did not want here self on camera . 😄
Once you are in the water you have to be committed and Don’t stop.
1:19 that's one cool version of the Van.
thought they were fixing this stuff after Sandy.....didnt learn I guess
I was trying to cross from the west side to get to the FDR and all the park crossings were closed. Now I know why.
You know buddy was pissed when the car behind him sent a wave up his exhaust pipe
Can u imagine if all that rain was snow 😮👀
1 inch of rain = 1 foot of snow
so satisfying
Keep it in gear so the exhaust pushes out the water and make sure the intake is above the water line
Thanks for the tip
The gear has nothing to do with exhaust gases. If it did your engine would shut off every time you put your car in park 🤣
How about avoiding driving through deep water 😉
@@ScooterLee-ei1ep what he’s saying his don’t change any gear and just push through . I drive a manual car that’s slammed to the floor and I’ve driven through water lots of time and the car is perfectly fine
That suv in the beginning looks futuristic dam
I don’t remember this and I live in New York City. I do remember that we had snow flurries that day and the temperature was single digits that night.
They was told not to go out. Oh my car is a boat I can go through deep water. Oh wait, I'm stuck in water 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
some ppl work in nyc
@@KrazyKrzysztof that's when you call in 🤣🤣 my vehicle isn't a boat. Yep those strained people made it in .🤣🤣🤣
GREAT ENGINEERING!
No drain holes along the bottom of the NJ barriers 🤯
I guess they weren't warned about the flooded highway. Omg
I get that driving too fast in standing water isn't a bright idea, but car makers can develop intake systems that are efficient and can mitigate water intake.
It’s just the weather everybody.
Nothing like some water to get the party started
I’m screaming at how she assaulted him and thought it was okay. Like hello? It’s not that serious. Damn.
I’ll never live in New York this how it feels without the rain
I knew to get out of broad channel/ Rockaways years ago. Even before sandy
I wonder just how many people are going to lose their lives when a real emergency happens because they're too stoopid to recognize a life threatening situation until it's too late
yet you don't know the difference between lose and loose
@@dannybk6559 that was the automatic spelling, I know the difference thank you very much and I'm prepared too so just in case you were wondering. I'm surprised you didn't spell check the other misspelled word
Also very disturbing that not a single person has half a brain to turn on hazards when driving past the flood to warn other drivers behind. Only time you find NY drivers using hazards are when double/tripple parking on the road. Some don't even do so 🤦🏽♂
I agree with you Leia G.
It’s called survival of the fittest for a reason. The more mistakes you make the more possibility you can end your life. Before the storm hit they told people to get prepared and stay home! Obviously the people who didn’t listen already made 1 mistake. And on top of that they didn’t prepare to be on the road in dangerous conditions now that’s 2 mistakes. On top of that they stop on the side of the road cuz they can’t move or see and they don’t have their hazards warning people who might not be able to see them that’s 3 mistakes right there. There’s a lot of people out there who think preparation and precaution don’t make a difference but as you can tell by how many people were stranded on the roads it makes a huge difference.
I'd imagine that NYC isn't much better than Philthydelphia however & regardless of clogged drains there's this is with water flowing correctly once its forced through pipes. Large pipes can only handle so much water at a particular flow, once the large drains flow supercedes that of the smaller drains ,then the smaller ones will not drain until the larger drains pressure is less. Kinda like rush hour traffic & 100 cars trying to immediately enter the highway can't do so in an expedited manner .
Im just at an awe that this many people would even attempt driving their car in this
It's not flooded on the streets at all, just up there. Must've been a water-main break
What is this, where on the FDR? Guy comes in ~2:10 you can tell it's not raining hard. Not nearly as windy as it sounds either
Yesterday + now 9am -ish it's been drizzling on + off, damp, misty / humid, but warm mid-50°s
Later they say it's gonna get super cold but starting later
@@cheesejadeitekiwifox Nope. Not yet…
Definitely rain, that’s only the aftermath. Just an hour or so before it was raining heavily
Espino got a good attitude blessings to that man 🙌
Makes me glad I was upstate during this. I mean we had snow near Rochester and it was deathly cold, but I was inside with wine and happy lol
This is just a little water! Not flooding! This is a normal every year thing in Indiana on expressways and side streets! Flooding is when you get to the countryside roads! I've been on a road with 7 feet of water with a lifted truck! No joke!
Makes no sense to drive on the FDR in bad weather. Always floods. In rainy weather better to avoid all together.
Engine got hydro-locked. Meaning when water gets into the engine block, you’re done for. Or the vehicle atleast. 😢
The bridge in the background is , THE WASHINGTION BRIDGE , and never like this happen on the F.D.R. drive .
It always happens in heavy rain.
If your car gets stuck like this - GET AWAY FROM THE CAR!! It may very well get hit by another car and you do not want to be nearby.
Not smoke. It's can't steam and not everyone is stuck.. just pointing that out
Franklin Delano Roosevelt would not be proud.
Unreal 🔌🙏🙏🙏🙏💜
Look at the color of the water in NEW YORK?
that honda hydrolocked itself i bet
The answer to that is, Park Avenue south.
Is that a flood tide or a flash flood?
That’s look like a ice skating rink today guys drive safe out there
Goes to show how really smart people are lmfao 🤣 😂 😭 😆
Many belts will come off as a result of driving fast through the water... serpentine belts will come off and you won't get too far after this happens...
😂My RSX wld not survived that even if I take it slow through that much water 🏎😬🥶
Oh stop, you can drive till at least half way up the door 🤣 island life
This gives us an idea about what Manhattan can become if...
