This show is on point! Can’t believe that TOTO has been an underrated band throughout the years, when it is the greatest band of all time! Keep em’ coming professor!
"Underrated?" Seriously? Only "underrated" to those who have only ever heard "Africa' and "Rosanna....." Also, easily one of the greatest solos from "Won't Hold You Back..".....
What do you mean underrated? They've won awards, were big in the late 70s and throughout the 80s and to early 90s. They were big, you just missed them.
I Won't Hold You Back is 150% underrated for sure. It sits there in the same league of the other hits in Toto IV: Rosanna, Africa... you name it. Toto is one of the greatest bands ever and Steve Lukather is a genius.
The RRHOF is a joke, I stopped paying attention to inductions when they finally bowed to pressure and inducted Rush. Alex’s speech summed up what I think of “the hall:” Blah Blah Blah, Blah Blah Blah Blah 😑
Luke has a really hard time taking a compliment to this day, but he has written some great songs, and his ability to come up with guitar parts on the spot put him in the top group of session musicians of all time. He's one of the hardest working people in the business.
"I Won't Hold You Back" is one of my biggest songs that I actually can't imagine living without. It's definitely my favorite Toto song!!! Thank you for putting it in the spotlight. It's definitely underrated.
You are a lucky sob! Do you know how many musicians have that dream? The fans, the record company and everything comes in second the the person you impressed. You can die a happy person@
"We were also working on a lot of records that WERE our competition." Just an amazing piece of truth there. I've been on a Toto jag for several months. I love these two guys and their music. It really tops it off to have the professor cover them. It just doesn't get better than that. Thanks
absolutely, man same here. few months now going back over these with the fine toothed comb. incredible appreciation. “these chains” is my current fascination track.
Paich the guy who wrote "Hold the Line", "99", "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", "Georgy Porgy", "Rosanna", "Hydra", "Holyanna", "Pamela, Rossana"...haha such a cool dude!
Thank you so much for sharing this! "I Won't Hold You Back" is a gorgeous track and great to hear live. - Luke's guitar provokes the goosebumps on this one.
I love when Luke said “sometimes you don’t have to play much to say a lot”. I think that’s one reason his solos are so melodic and great. love these guys.
People often toss around their opinions of who's the most "underrated" guitarist, drummer, etc. Well, I'd like to toss Steve Lukather's name into the "one of the most underrated singers" hat. Since Toto's first album, on songs like "Georgy Porgy" and the beautiful ballad/rocker "Angela", Steve made it very clear Bobby Kimball wasn't the "only" great singer in the band. The band's follow-up album "Hydra" spawned only one true commercial hit, "99". Again, this song showcased Steve's massively "under the radar" vocal prowess to the mostly unwitting public. Fast forward in time a bit on the songs, "I Won't Hold You Back" and "I'll Be Over You", it's easy to make a case that one of the most talented and prolific guitarist during the past few decades also deserves to be recognized for his vocal chops. ;-)
Whenever I hear I Won't Hold You Back, I always think of a classmate on whom I had a huge crush in the 8th grade. I still remember going to the spring dance, hoping that I could dance with her while this song played. One of my favorite songs of all times.
I'm ashamed to admit that I had forgotten completely about this song and was flooded with memories when I heard it again in this video. Thanks for the reminder Professor!
Had to introduce my son to Boz. My mom was a huge fan so I know all of the songs. He is into jazz a little bit too, and loves the 80s but somehow missed him until now. Good call!
This cats and Jeff were THE working guys on studio during one of the most exciting times on record industry. That time is gone now and probably never return. So we better give them the recognition they deserve on music. They made history and damn great music.
The 1990 concert performance of "I Won't Hold You Back" is the best version too. Luke's solo, accompanied by the background singers, is truly mesmerizing.
So rare to have such elite talent, but so much respect and ego-free attitude throughout the years. Only other band I can think of like that is Rush. Close friends over decades of ups and downs, with so much humility and respect for eachother.
Toto was always there during the hard times when you would have relationship issues and you couldn’t put words to what you were feeling… There was always a song they put your feelings into words. I was grateful to have Toto in my life for both the good times and the difficult ones. Music brings words to your feelings. It’s so important.❤️

Professor, how about this for a week on Billboard? July 14, 1984. 1. Prince - When Doves Cry 2. Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In the Dark 3. The Pointer Sisters - Jump (For My Love) 4. Billy Idol - Eyes Without A Face 5. Duran Duran - The Reflex 6. Laura Branigan -Self Control 7. Mike Reno and Anne Wilson - Almost Paradise 8. Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters 9. Huey Lewis and the News - The Heart of Rock and Roll 10. ZZ Top - Legs
This is an epic top 10....but I don't think it could stand up to this video's top 10. Prince and Michael in the same 10 and add in Toto and David bowie it's tough to beat!
Totally underrated. Fell in love with this song first time I heard it. Always amazing hearing the story behind such great songs. 'Sometimes you don't have to play that much to say a lot.' - Love it!!!
Thanks for bringing a spotlight on this amazing ballad! They have been my favorite band for the last 42 years. Glad to see you sporting the Toto IV t-shirt! I wore mine out years ago; purchased at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in August, 1982 just before the Toto concert. In addition to both "I Won't Hold You Back" and "I'll Be Over You", there are a number of other Steve Lukather ballads worth checking out: 1. If It's The Last Night (1981) from Turn Back 2. How Does It Feel (1984) from Isolation 3. Anna (1988) from The Seventh One 4. These Chains (1988) from The Seventh One 5. Only You (1992) from Kingdom of Desire 6. I Will Remember (1995) from Tambu 7. The Other End Of Time (1995) from Tambu 8. Melanie (1999) from Mindfields 9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (2003) from Through The Looking Glass Thanks again for keeping this great music alive!
One of my favorite things to do is share music timelines with my daughter. I was a freshman in HS in 1983, my daughter, a fellow music junkie, is now a freshman in HS, so, great timing, Just this week she was all excited over the release of her favorite artists new single. I remember that passion about music and you, Professor, keep the memories alive!
When I was growing up I spent a lot of time outside and could hear the neighbors radio, which was always tuned to the rock station. I remember this song coming on the radio and I was intrigued by it at the time because it was nothing like anything I had ever heard before. Time went by and it was years before the song came back into my life. It's become my favorite Toto song and one of my favorite songs overall. I can't believe how underappreciated it is.
One of my favorite ballads of all time. From Luke's great vocals & guitar licks, Tim B Schmidt's background vocals, the strings & horns on this tune were just out of this world. I wore out my cassette player with this album in the 80's.
Absolutely the saddest, most beautiful song ever composed. The piano, the lyrics, the guitar solo, all perfection. My most favorite song of all time. Thank you so much for this. There will be nights at home or shifts at work where I will just play every live version, cover etc I can find and just listen to them all back to back to back for hours.
As a teenager in the 80's, I'm a big fan of Professor of Rock. He always does a nice job of putting everything together and brings back a lot of great memories. Appreciate that. Love these guys too. So down to Earth, so humble and I don't think Toto gets the full credit they deserve for being the great band that they are. So many good songs that have held up nicely through the years. The wife and I love Toto and it was a pleasure to see this. Thanks so much.
Already on my playlist. Has been for 35 years. Such a great tune. Thanks for showing/sharing this. Toto is so good...how they arent in the RRHoF is a joke
For many years I played “Stop Loving You”, “Rossana”, “Pamela” “Hold the Line” Toto and “I’m Alive” “Mr Blue Sky” ELO every morning driving to work. They injected me with so much energy! On my way back home I played “I Wont Hold You Back” and “I’ll Be Over You” among others, to unwind. Awesome memories. Thanks for the video!
I dig when you take any random week of the 80's and review the top 10. It is incredible how many weeks were stuffed with what we now call classics. Spoiled, as it turns out we were all spoiled but still I think it's a damn shame what's become of the music industry.
Great video! I am so glad you featured TOTO. I saw them a few years ago in Huber Heights, Ohio as the opener for YES. While both were fantastic bands, TOTO were amazing. My wife even was blown away with their performance and she is not a big music listener. I will travel anywhere in the states to see them live. They are truly talented musicians.
I Won't Hold You Back is an epic song. From the piano at the beginning to Steve coming in on vocals and a chorus that can give you goosebumps. The song is so solid and perfect.
The guitar solo is SO powerful on I Won't Hold You Back. I mean, I'm getting goosebumps listening to it right now. It's one of those songs that you want to turn out the lights, put on the headphones and close your eyes and just put it on repeat and listen when the kids are in bed. Existential. So awesome. I love this song.
Thank you for posting this interview. Mr. Lukather is so talented in multiple dimensions, with his gifts in guitar, vocals and songwriting. I so appreciate his sharing his gifts with the world.
Literally in tears, this is such a great song that manages to resurface during each significant transition point in my life. There will never be a year for music like 1983.
I go back and forth between "I Won't Hold You Back" and "I'll Be Over You" as 2 of my favorite ballads. Just happen to be by the same band and singer. Luke killed it on both. Such great songs. And I love listening to Paich and Luke or any of the other guys in interviews. So fun and down to earth. They have tons of respect for each each other and you can tell they really are a brotherhood.
"I Won't Hold You Back" is my FAVORITE Toto song!! "Overkill" is also my favorite Men At Works song. I NEVER missed a Casey countdown. Still listen to them in rerun whenever I can. Those were the days. I am glad to hear you say that you did your own top 10. I thought I was the only one!! Another great video Professor!
To me this is one of the greatest songs of all time! I will never understand why these epic songs get overlooked. Thanks Professor for featuring this on your video!
5 Forgotten Gems from 1983 Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello & the Attractions Steppin Out - Joe Jackson Look of Love - ABC All Right - Christopher Cross Lies - Thompson Twins
I just posted the UK Top 10 for the same date and The Thompson Twins were on that with We Are Detective. Look Of Love is definitely not forgotten in the UK and I love Steppin' Out by Joe Jackson too.
@@islandbee For curiousity, what country are you in? I was also thinking about Look Of Love for more than just radio play but there's bound to be difference between areas, even in the same country. That's one big advantage to streaming music, you don't need to listen to the radio station playlists.
@@lwaves - I live in the Pacific Northwest corner of the US. In between Seattle, WA and Vancouver, BC. Yeah, I drive a an early 90s vehicle with a stock stereo system with cassette tape. Very 80s like 😎
@@islandbee So your weather is probably similar to mine in the UK - rainy. yeah, I suspect radio playlists are very different between our two areas. Cassettes might have been the most versatile music format, at least until things like the iPod and MP3 players became a thing. Play them, record on them with your own tracks and very portable.
I was an unapologetic 'metalhead' who had drawn a line in the sand, and chose my side of the fence, by the time 'I won't hold you back' was released, but the first time I heard the song my heart melted, and I started the very slow process of giving other genres of music a chance. Such an important and classic song.
Amazing content. What a great time to be alive when all these hits were popping all at the same time. Toto one of my all time favs. Rosanna, Africa and of course I Won't Hold You Back. Professor of Rock is freakin Mint!
I just adore Lukather as much as you possibly can adore someone youve never actually met......at least without being creepy. Ive been a huge fan of his playing since i discovered the solo to "Rosanna", but since watching your interviews and digging into other UA-cam appearances, i cant help but think the guy is the coolest. The Toto guys as a whole just seem like great dudes.- I had forgotten about this song and never thought about who sang it, or wrote it, for that matter. Of course its Lukather. Is there anything he cant do? I totally want that rad Toto IV shirt. Where'd you get it Professor?
Amazing people. I met Steve while he was on tour in 2018 in Charleston S.C. I bought VIP tickets for me and my daughter and he was gracious enough to speak with us before the show. What an amazing person who truly loves his fans.
I think this is why there are so many Toto videos...partly. They are enjoyable to watch compliment and praise each other and other musicians in their orbit. I never miss a Toto video because of that.
When I saw this teaser title, I was hoping it would be I Won’t Hold You Back! Such a gorgeous ballad, really standing out among all the other gorgeous ballads of the era.
70's and 80's BEST MUSIC EVER!! I am so lucky to have lived through such an important era. NOW I am lucky to hear the PROFESSOR OF ROCK analyze and talk about that important time.
Great song. Great vid. Luke is rightfully heralded for his twanger play but that dude also (perhaps more significantly) has a fantastic voice and can write sweet tunes too!
Nice work Professor. You bring up a point of interest, ask a question that most of us are thinking "Yeah, what about that?" then sit back and let their memories flow. You let the guys talk it out, you don't talk over them and the guys are so at ease with you it really is a pleasure to watch.

The 80’s was an amazing decade for music!! So many great bands, so many great songs!! I feel very fortunate to have experienced it in real time!! The work of all those artists at that time, still holds up in 2020!! 👍🎼👍
'83, my second year of military service. Brings back memories of painful farewells and anticipation of happy reunions. Toto will always be a huge part of the Soundtrack of my Life !!
What a phenomenal Top 10! I don't think I realized how lucky I was to grow up in the 70s and 80s with so much incredible music. I think I took it for granted! I still listen to Toto IV on a regular basis, and it was great to hear how "I Won't Hold You Back" came about. "Come on Eileen" and "Overkill" are two of my all-time favorite songs, so I still listen to those regularly as well. But the rest are all great, too! Thanks for this video! :)
i wont hold you back now is an underated song for the masive public, but a great favorite for us the fans of toto and yeah, the luke´s solo is epic!!!! I have a t shirt like yours, a custom made with the toto 4 cover album, great!!!!!!
Great show! Toto my favorite 😍 of course on my playlist! I wanted to share a photo with you but can’t seem to be able to. 1993 saw them live in Boston and Steve gave me his “signed” guitar pick. Fast forward 2015 saw them on a huge venue in Luxembourg and I got to “catch” Steve’s signed and dated pick. It was surreal. I shared my picture on Facebook because it was unbelievable. Love them so much. Leah, I’ll be over you, Hold you back etc best ballads ever
I was in 5th grade in '83. This was an INCREDIBLE year for music for me! I was always really into music, but this just kicked off my deeper level of listening. And this song is one of the best songs ever of that year.
great job! as for iconic Billboard weeks (i've been buying the mag as well since I was 14 in 1982) I nominate March 12 of 1983. Billie Jean #1, both Culture Club AND Duran Duran with their breakthrough hits, Journey entering, classic soft-pop with Lionel RIchie's "You Are" and Patti Austin/James Ingram's "Baby Come To Me" along with Kenny and Sheena's iconic cover of "We've Got Tonight" along with Seger himself on Shame on the Moon, and the Stray Cat Strut bringing the retro rock to a head. Cheers...
Prof, another great interview! These guys are so awesome. I love how humble they are, and you can tell how much they love and appreciate one another by just how much they edify one another. Class act all the way. Young artistes could learn a thing or ten from this band on how it's done.
I Won't Hold You Back is one of my fav songs of all time dude and it's really beautiful hear the history behind it by Steve and David themselves, this is amazing!!!!
Toto is one great band that can never be matched, just because of who they all are. The best of the best who came together to create iconic music for all generations. Still the best. They can never go out of style.
Both down to earth and humble. I wont hold you back is my favorite Toto song. It’s interesting to hear Steve Lukather was insecure about his vocals but his voice was epically good, and seeing hime sing it adds more depth. You know he’s pouring his heart and soul. Thank. You
This show is on point! Can’t believe that TOTO has been an underrated band throughout the years, when it is the greatest band of all time! Keep em’ coming professor!
Greatest band of all time? Come on. Don't BAN me professor. Lol
I never ever underrated them ;-)
@JW KenCo But after Toto IV they got into a feud with Rolling Stone Magazine and didn't get the necessary coverage to remain top of the bill.
"Underrated?" Seriously? Only "underrated" to those who have only ever heard "Africa' and "Rosanna....." Also, easily one of the greatest solos from "Won't Hold You Back..".....

OMG, I WASN'T EXPECTING A REPLY.

Steve is a great person too.
Toto should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Period. You are the best, Professor. Seriously.

You are so welcome Bill! Thanks for watching.
Rick Beato raves about the tone of the guitar on this one. I have to agree. Killer tone from a killer guitarist.
One of the greatest ballads ever made...only second to their other Maestro composition "I'll be over You" . 🙏🎼❤️
That's a tough one. I love both so much. Thanks for watching !
I still listen to I'll Be Over You . It is my favorite ballad of theirs.
@@ProfessorofRock For sure a close call 😉 Keep up your great work, Professor. Love every episode!
Both awesome Luke ballads. Gotta love the Luke ballads!
Both written by Luke.
The last song my mother ever heard was me playing a version of this song. She said it was the most beautiful thing she ever heard. God rest her soul.

absolutely, man same here. few months now going back over these with the fine toothed comb. incredible appreciation. “these chains” is my current fascination track.
The lead guitar coupled with the French horn makes for such a haunting solo. Definitely one of my favorite Toto tunes.
It's a hall of fame solo for sure.
@James Smith Yeah they knocked it out of the park. Cheers!
It's excruciating and painfully melancholic.
Steve Lukather is so awesome! Very underappreciated/underrated amongst all guitarists.
Paich the guy who wrote "Hold the Line", "99", "Lowdown", "Lido Shuffle", "Georgy Porgy", "Rosanna", "Hydra", "Holyanna", "Pamela, Rossana"...haha such a cool dude!
Deep track: he wrote a very heartfelt ballad for Toto XIV called, "All the Tears that Shine." ua-cam.com/video/RP9R7ZNvfIA/v-deo.html
He also wrote "Bottom of Your Soul" from the Falling in Between album, one of their most underrated songs imo.
And also, I think, he wrote Africa too
14:39 - "sometimes you don't have to play that much, to say a lot." Well said, Luke! The solo is iconic! ❤🔥
I'm rediscovering "I'll be over you" and I'm obsessed with that song.
If you haven't already, go watch the video of them singing it live in Paris from 1990 (I think). Greatness.
I Won't Hold You Back had such a sad guitar solo in it. As Luke said in the interview, "Sometimes you don't have to say that much to say alot."
Toto IV was a great album. This song often gets overshadowed by Africa and Rosanna. The album justifiably swept the Grammy's.
People often toss around their opinions of who's the most "underrated" guitarist, drummer, etc. Well, I'd like to toss Steve Lukather's name into the "one of the most underrated singers" hat.

like George Benson, another great guitarist who also does great vocals
I agree totally !!
These guys are so damned humble! It makes them even more admirable.

They have so many great songs you're bound to forget one. Thanks for watching!
Eddie's solo in 'Beat It' is actually my favorite of all his solos.
Won’t Hold You Back: one of THE greatest guitar solos in ANY song. Period.
This is my favourite Toto song, always gets me singing along. This is quite the top 10 list for the week, hard to argue any of the songs on it
One of my favorite Toto tunes.
Same here. Thanks for watching.

I'll Be Over You ... That's some tear jerking gold right there !

Yeah, really love that Boz tune! And yeah, Lukather and Mike and Jeff Porcaro plays on that one too.
It was a trip finding out so many years later that Boz’s band was a big chunk of Toto. It all made sense.
A fabulous Toto song that Boz sang was "Miss Sun." So intimate.
Toto kept me in the rock pop genre while I got into metal . Still resonates today. Toto is heavy in my playlist
I hope you have some of their deep track heavier stuff in your playlist, like this one: ua-cam.com/video/wvujXqPnNUk/v-deo.html
Lukather got me to really appreciate guitars as a keyboard player, which is why I like metal :)

"I guess I should have known by the way you parked your car sideways that it wouldn't last." Greatest opening line ever!
Toto IV is one of my favorite albums of all time. Another song I like off this album is Afraid Of Love. A real underrated rocker.

6. I Will Remember (1995) from Tambu
7. The Other End Of Time (1995) from Tambu
8. Melanie (1999) from Mindfields
9. While My Guitar Gently Weeps (2003) from Through The Looking Glass
Thanks again for keeping this great music alive!
Man I would love to see interviews with these guys talking about Isolation. One of my favorite albums of all time!
Adam, "How does it feel" off of isolation is another incredible Luke ballad. Thanks for the great interview
Toto is one of my favorite bands and so underrated IMHO. Just magnificent musicians! That album is a play list!
One of the best power ballads ever. The vocal and that solo...❤️
I love all ten of these songs, and videos. Saw Mr. ROBOTO performed live by Styx at an arena.
I have always loved TOTO but during COVID I have totally rediscovered so many of their great tunes. This is one of my favorites along with 99. ❤️
Already on my playlist. Has been for 35 years. Such a great tune. Thanks for showing/sharing this. Toto is so good...how they arent in the RRHoF is a joke
I'm glad you were pressed by your wife to ask about this song. It is my favorite Toto song. It moves my soul every time I hear it.
Everyone talks about Lukather’s guitar and writing prowess.
And yes I completely agree….
But how about that damn voice?!
Amazing talent and song 🎵
The solo on I Won't Hold You Back is as much a tear jerker as the words to this ballad. Strong and soaring. Great job as always.
Won't hold you back... Such a great song. That piano melody, especially in the beginning and in-between verses, is so hauntingly beautiful.
I Won't Hold You Back is an epic song. From the piano at the beginning to Steve coming in on vocals and a chorus that can give you goosebumps. The song is so solid and perfect.
The soaring strings with the guitar solo and the horns on the bridge is sublime! The orchestration was glorious.
5 Forgotten Gems from 1983
Everyday I Write the Book - Elvis Costello & the Attractions
Steppin Out - Joe Jackson
Look of Love - ABC
All Right - Christopher Cross
Lies - Thompson Twins
I just posted the UK Top 10 for the same date and The Thompson Twins were on that with We Are Detective. Look Of Love is definitely not forgotten in the UK and I love Steppin' Out by Joe Jackson too.
@@lwaves - I don't hear Look of Love often where I'm from on the radio. And I love Be Near Me from ABC too.
The Toto guys as a whole just seem like great dudes.-
I had forgotten about this song and never thought about who sang it, or wrote it, for that matter. Of course its Lukather. Is there anything he cant do?
I totally want that rad Toto IV shirt. Where'd you get it Professor?
Luke is amazing. Have you checked out his killer solo stuff? Fall into Velvet, Brody's...killer stuff!
@@cathybedwell1877 No...but now im gonna! Thanks for the tip!!
@@alecj3454 Enjoy!
You can find the shirts on eBay.
@@robp7729 You can check the Toto store as well.
Amazing people. I met Steve while he was on tour in 2018 in Charleston S.C. I bought VIP tickets for me and my daughter and he was gracious enough to speak with us before the show. What an amazing person who truly loves his fans.
I could watch these guys talk all day. So jealous that you were able to interview them!
I think this is why there are so many Toto videos...partly. They are enjoyable to watch compliment and praise each other and other musicians in their orbit. I never miss a Toto video because of that.
I love"good for you"from Toto 4,my favourite song from that excellent album.
Their best and grossly underrated album is Isolation. That's a true gem.
Great song.

I love Luke's energy. Have no idea how old he is, but even if he is probably around 70, he still has this teenager soul. Love it! Awesome guy!
This band just "made" my teenage years complete. I love TOTO's music, always have and always will!! RIP Jeff and Mike Porcaro ♥♥
i wont hold you back now is an underated song for the masive public, but a great favorite for us the fans of toto and yeah, the luke´s solo is epic!!!!
And this song is one of the best songs ever of that year.
this is my #1 Toto song and im a Toto geek, Steves voice is so haunting and the strings just weep, LOVE IT ALWAYS
My absolute favorite Toto song. The vocals, the guitar solo, the strings and Timothy B. backing vocals. Perfect ballad. Thanks for covering it.
great job! as for iconic Billboard weeks (i've been buying the mag as well since I was 14 in 1982) I nominate March 12 of 1983.
Really good. I remember all of these songs! Just a kid in 83.
Luke and Paich. Such humble guys. They truly are fans of one another. Brother for sure!
Thank. You
