This is a great guide Keef, and at the risk of being cheesy, gives much food for thought. I used to work in Sainsburies at Christmas if was between jobs (I was a computer contractor and it happened!) and they always had stuff on sale in the last days before Christmas and practically gave away vegetables because they always had them left over (except cucumber for some reason!) so as long as you're not missing anything essential like the turkey/joint its reasonably safe to "buy whats on the shelf" for some items presuming you don't have specific dietary requirements. Of course, this year things could be different if people panic, but I think people are more likely to buy earlier than panic at the last minute unless they are really stuck for cash. Of course the other thing to factor in is that the leftovers and unused amounts can be used to make a meal for the days after christmas, be it some kind of soup or stew. You can make magnificent stock from the turkey carcass & bones if you are careful about straining it (poultry bones can splinter easily when cooked for long periods of time). I see too many people throwing away huge amounts of food after the big meal, probably because at the time it seems all too much to deal with. If you have some turkey and ham left over, a turkey, ham & vegetable pie is a great way to have a meal several days later and can use up some of those leftover veggies. Just scrape them into tupperware into the fridge/freezer on the day and deal with them later when you can face it.
Well done Keefy. That's helped a lot of people worried about the cost. Another benefit of the turkey breast roll is because its smaller you don't have to worry about cooking it all the way through! Well I mean you must cook it all the way through but because its smaller its easier to do so without cremating the outside. And yes people can tweak some of the trimmings, Ive seen below the comment about bread sauce, I wouldn't have the bread sauce, the cranberry sauce or the red cabbage because those things weren't a thing in my family. And although as a kid i ate the sprouts because it was traditional as i have became older the taste has sort become less unpleasant!
I never enjoyed sprouts as a kid either 😂😂 It’s getting that way Christmas dinner with family will be a I’ll cook the meat you all bring a dish to share event. It’s called a pot luck here in the USA.
@@Keefcooks If they can't cook they'll usually do something like a pudding pie- instant pudding in a crust of graham crackers and butter blended together.
We've ordered a turkey roll from our butcher this year, as we can't manage a whole turkey with just the two of us😅I agree that it cooks more evenly, and it's easier to carve. Red cabbage is popular over here, and is delicious, but for Christmas we always go traditional with sprouts (we love 'em!), parsnips and carrots. I've never been a fan of bread sauce, and my other half won't eat cranberry sauce, because it's too sweet, but I like it.
Thanks for that - all the correct guides and info with none of the 'cheffy faff!' What? No foam? I hear someone bleating! Down to earth common sense, who'd have thought it!
What you could do for gas and electric costs is take readings before you start and as soon as you finish for gas you will need to take a reading including the digits after the decimal point then take one from the other and multiply by 11.3 to get the kWh used. For electric use something like a Tapo smart plug that reads the energy used. If you still have an old analogue meters just take the readings including the numbers after the decimal point and work out the usage.
Given the mad price of turkey, I would rather get an extra-large chicken or a joint of pork, still have the pigs in blankets and ll the other trimmings
Lard for spuds is incredible its cheap and its a myth how bad it is for us apparently . Makes spuds taste like the wonderful sundays of the 70s at me nans lol delicious x
I'm doing poulet du bresse stuffed and in the slow cooker along with a piece of smoked gammon. In the air frier I will do the extra stuffing, roasties & parsnips - par cooked the day before and will crisp up the skin of the very expensive chicken. Bread sauce is an essential and cranberry sauce will be out of a jar. Carrots on the stove as Keef does after a stint in the steamer with the sprouts and extra potatoes. Sprouts will be finished off on the hob with pancetta and chestnuts. The extra potatoes are for bubble and squeak on Boxing Day. Gravy is optional as bread sauce is essential and glorious. This is only for one but I deserve it
I don’t know about other places, but American grocery stores often have steep sales on a few items, around holidays especially but even at random times of year. They are called “loss leaders” because the store is taking a loss to draw people into the store, the idea being that you’ll then see other stuff you want and spend more money. The sales have been less this year, but I still got some apples this fall for 49 cents per pound and 5lb of sweet potatoes right before Thanksgiving for only 15 cents per pound.
I've always thought I'm too savvy to fall for the loss leader, but in reality you need to factor in the time, transport cost, and general inclination to shop at lots of different places.

Just drive into the outback and shoot an emu or a roo!
It surprised me actually - I thought I would have to do some serious compromises to get it down to that price.
@@edgarburlyman738 The petrol costs would push this way up.
@@hiyasweets How far would you have to drive to do it, and how much does fuel cost there? I figure you need a pretty beefy vehicle to go out there too, can't really do it in a Prius?
Well done Keef, you're a hero, even though you're an anti-sproutist! 😂
Hey, I ate 2!
By the way "what's Yorkshire pudding"
Just out of interest, where are you from Bessie? Here's Roast Beef and Yorkshire Puddings: ua-cam.com/video/HXCmwiBewAs/v-deo.html
I'm from Baltimore MD, it's cold now, thankful for still being alive ✌️
Thank you and check my message, have a glorious holiday celebration.
5lb bag of potatoes $5.99
Sprouts, possibly the greatest vegetable ever, shame on you KC!
Stuffing, stuffing balls or sausage meat all great accompaniments, however, I like to mix half and half, stuffing mix and sausage meat. Toss some chestnuts in if you like. Even been known to cook it as a loaf wrapped in bacon.
Nah, the onion is the best ever veg and there's not a single one in this meal because I'm not biased. Agree about your stuffing suggestions, but you just exploded the budget!
I was enjoying this video but the squeaking noise on the soundtrack throughout made me have to turn off!
Oh no! I used to have people complaining about this until about 6 months ago when I altered the EQ settings I was using. Nobody has mentioned it since then so I'd assumed it was OK - I can't hear it myself because your audible dynamic range reduces as you get older. I don't know what I can suggest...have you noticed this on any of my other videos?
Where's the yorkies?? Just kidding, I know it's controversial for Xmas dinner.
Soon we'll be happy to trap a stray dog for Christmas dinner, and (helicopter crashes into building behind me) fighting over a fallen tree branch to cook it with! Just kidding, Merry Christmas!
this guy didn't make christmas meal, he just air fried stuff. The only thing he didn't air fry was the turkey
'This guy' is wondering why you bothered to make a comment.
Christmas dinner is Christmas dinner, did you expect him to roast it in front of an open fire ?
Happy Christmas!
