This is the song that made me and I think so many others fell in love with Mike's drumming and the fact that he still has it after so many years is crazy to me. Blessed to have Portnoy in this lifetime!
Absolutely. I've played guitar and piano since I was ~12 but when I was 18, I watched the live recording of this and thought "hold up....." MP made me much more attentive to the drum tracks of music.
I wholeheartedly agree. I remember thinking how perfect it was to conclude a phenomenal album the first time I heard it. Scenes from a Memory is still my favorite DT album and I still love it just as much today as I did the day it came out.
Yeah I remember being blown away from that section on the DVD. It came to mind while watching this video. Been more than a decade that I haven't seen that DVD performance (Metropolis part 2 live) and I no longer have the DVD. Would like to rewatch.
Among the many things I love about Mike Portnoy, the way his kit sounds has always been right up there for me. Even though it has changed and evolved over the years, his ear for picking cymbal sounds and drum tunings that sound incredible and really compliment each other was a huge influence on me.
"Put it in front of me. I'll hit it." -- Mike Portnoy, probably. Wow! I've never listened to Dream Theater before, but seeing these videos of Mike's drumming makes me want to listen to more. Thank you Mike and Drumeo!
Metropolis Part 2 is one of my favorite albums and for whatever reason I always listen to the entire album at least once on long road trips. An amazing ending for an amazing album.
Gavin Harrison and MP remind me to not crank smaller toms- they pop more with a looser tension. Classic playing. One of those things that makes people want to play the drums. That's why MP is a legend.
I mean, yeah, he was the main songwriter and did the orchestration for almost everything until his departure. Glad he's back, I wonder how it went learning all the songs from when he was gone. I'd love to hear him talk about the challenges of learning someone else's parts for his own band.
I have listened to this album probably about 100 times and it's one of the best and most amazing albums that really impressed me on so many levels. The compositions, the dynamics, the flow, the lyrics, the overall concept and the almost perfect execution. I cried several times while listening because it was so overwhelming.
Watching this and remembering the earlier drumeo videos where I wished Mike Portnoy would be on here..and that day has finally come..Kudos to Drum for making this happen..What a time to be alive. I would love to see him do A7x's 'Nightmare' - although it may be a long shot.
In my personal opinion Mike is easily the greatest drummer to ever exist. I am so glad he came home to Dream Theater. This next record will be one of their greatest albums ever I hope. Granted James vocals have diminished but the band is better than they’ve ever been.
This is how you do it! Doing all the solo's, all the fills, but still coming back to the One, keeping the feel intact. MP for me all day everyday. Awesome, still, after all those years. MM, while being amazing, and technically 10 and maybe even 100 times better than many many other drummer, just made me feel nervous when he played this outtro...
I love drum outros. I always loved Anton Fig’s outro to Paul Stanley’s Take Me Away (Together as One), but this MP piece is just mind boggling….sets the bar for what outros should be.
Hearing this as my first dream theatre song I get the assumption that it’s just a portnoy solo career branded so that people will actually take interest (since nobody will admit to caring about drum tracks)
The funny thing is I heard him talk about train wrecking it from time to time, the solo part. When I seen them play it many years ago, in Detroit on the Train of Thought Tour, he played it safe for the most part, didn't do much flashy stuff. I got so excited when the part came and not much happened bummed me a tiny bit. But he delivered the whole freaking show anyways! Still Amazing AF!
Pull Me Under is actually inspired by IWant You (She’s So Heavy), the same random snip in the tape to end it was the reason the song stops abruptly during the outro. Source: Mike Portnoy in Drumeo’s Pull Me Under video.
The end is fine but the song is actually one of my favorites 😎👌 I enjoyed seeing the. Play this whole album live, yeah it wasn't with portnoy but Mike Mangini is dope too 👏 hope to see them thos time around with portnoy as he is one of my major drumming influences growing up.
Wow executing that push and pull effectively, kinda reminds me of west African djembe and dun dun drumming! had feeling! that’s what I liked! Loved the chops Mike….
Watching MP play in isolation, it is striking how much he is kickass branch off the Neil Peart tree. The music is stylistically different for sure, but the attack and the aproach to composition and fills are so similar. Really saw that in his fills in Pneuma.
Such an epic end to an epic album! Would love to see a playthrough of "A Nightmare to Remember" since it was used as a crucial audition piece all those years ago.
I would love you guys making Mike Portnoy play stuff from the Mangini-era of Dream Theater. And I mean it with all due respect for both Players, because Portnoy has such a strong persona that he brings to the table, while Mangini has such precision. Maybe we have to wait for the upcoming tour, but on the other hand... Just maybe... 😅

IMO, the best drum outro ever for an album.
Octavarium has entered the chat.
@@deadstar44octavarium has the best outro. Not specifically for the drums.

without doubt :)
best album closer oat generally ive heard as of now
Drumeo knows their audience. 🙏
one can dream but a whole Metropolis II breakdown/playthrough would be amazing.
Doubt we'll get more than this and already got dance of eternity. I want him to do more of the first listen sessions!
Ughhhhhhhhh yes please, especially Home - first DT song that got me.
@@spacemanOCEthere’s videos on UA-cam about that song clipped from Liquid Drum Theater, on of his instructional home videos.
The channel has already announced that there will be a video of him playing Instrumedley
@@spacemanOCEyep my favorite DT song. It's killer!
His drum outro on Finally Free from the Scenes From New York DVD was absolutely mind-blowing to me back in the day. It’s killer.
Yeah I remember being blown away from that section on the DVD. It came to mind while watching this video. Been more than a decade that I haven't seen that DVD performance (Metropolis part 2 live) and I no longer have the DVD. Would like to rewatch.
@@endlessorbaggins8223There's a remastered 4k version now up on YT. You must watch it. 🤘🏻
I was at that show - still one of the best performances I’ve ever seen live.
It's tasty...georgeous!
Open your eyes, Nicolas!!!
Uuuaaaargh!!!
**kshshsshhshshshshshshs**
iconic!!!
The version from "Live Scenes" is freaking ridiculous. The fact that the show goes another almost 2 hours after this ending is insane.
Mike passed out as soon as the show ended
fun fact: he plays something different in each live version
and we all love it.
It's the outro, the drummer is finally free to play whatever come to his mind
Basically he improvise.....
Yeah, its called improvisation. Give it a try kopykats
Wow thats a new information
The most melodic rack and floor toms in Heavy Metal. Absolutely amazing sound!
Amazing sound for sure but don't discount brann dailor like that!
Among the many things I love about Mike Portnoy, the way his kit sounds has always been right up there for me. Even though it has changed and evolved over the years, his ear for picking cymbal sounds and drum tunings that sound incredible and really compliment each other was a huge influence on me.
Gavin Harrison too
The sound he achieves from his chinas, max stax, bells, splashes and set in general is above all others. Portnoy is the best drummer in my world
Stop the world! New Mike Portnoy episode on Drumeo!
The king is where he should always be, on his throne. What a beast
Mike Portnoy out here reminding everyone he still gangsta
It's not finally free, it's just the end of finally free. Fantastic end.
Axchtually
Remember that is not the end
But only a transition
Well done @@andre2221

Thank you Mike and Drumeo!
You won’t regret listening to them. Fantastic music from them
Do it! It's a great journey, for sure. Even the records with Mike Mangini on drums instead of Portnoy have some great moments.
Metropolis Pt.1 was my gateway into their awesomeness.
Scenes from a memory, Images & Words, or Six Degrees are top albums if you’re a prog guy. Or if you’re a metal head, Train of Thought.
@@resoundingsource6595 Alas, I'm a simple rock chick. I appreciate your suggestions. Thank you.

🎉
I find that his playing has gained in feeling and depth since he left DT.
Less demonstrative but more presence.
Calm power and Subtleness
Love it !
What he did with Transatlantic and Flying Colors are awesome too!
He's older now
The Finaly Free on Cenes from New York DVD... My Favor Drum Solo of all time ! ❤
Seeing him play this again brings a smile to my face!
How i love his signature fills !!! the living LEGEND

AWESOME To see mike play this AGAIN !!!! A MASTERPIECE of an Album, And Such an INCREDIBLE Drummer... THANK YOU GUYS !!!
Scenes From A Memory, what an album. Still the absolute pinnacle of music for me.
My role model, the reason why I’m being a drummer till now, Mike Portnoy ❤
Not the best in the world, but the special one for me, Thx Mike!!!
Yet another instance of my favorite drummer on the planet being my favorite drummer on the planet.
Great timing. I was just watching the whole MP interview/playthrough yesterday. My tickets are ready for MP and DT in December! Let's gooooo!

Best album by Dream Theater

Ironically, MP is finally not free anymore. The man finally has a job.
Best outro for drum solo ever !
