I once met a Canadian trials rider on a train in Boston. His grips were just tennis racket tape, and I was dreading using the ones I had on my cheap trials bike so I had to try. Best mod I ever made, it provides a little bit of cushion but the responsiveness and feel is the dream.
Hey Ali Clarkson! Thanks for the update on your stable of bikes! 6000 bonus points to Jane Black for helping you through these times of quarantine! Keep it real! Ride ride ride!
Great to see you took my tire advice with dhf and dhr rear there a great combo of tires and plenty of tire compounds to choose from I'm glad you like them mate
I find the grip predictable maybe it's the compound choice that doesn't suit you mate for the Scottish loam on the dirt I ride on the grip is really reliable untill the ground gets too wet then it's time to go with the assegi or even beefier the swamp things lol
Yea that's the one Ali also the rubber seems way tuffer than most brands taking rock scrapes and sharp edges without putting a hole in the tire amount of times iv been let down by other brands from the side walls tearing iv never had a maxxis let me down
Picking up a inspired Fourplay in a few hours now. Looking forward to getting back to fooling around on a bike it’s been to long not on a trials bike for me. You vlog as made me want to give it ago again
22:40 would be interesting to see how those hold up after long term use, I did not know ODI made foam grips. I still use those expensive grips you were mentioning, but they have worked well for me so far, apart from one sleeve/grip that got super sticky, but they sent me a new pair, but the other pair I had did not have that issue, also they worse quite slowly. but if there is a cheap alternative that works that's great.
Great look into your collection! Yay Manny! I wish I could machine parts like that. The adjustable stem on the Echo is very interesting. I'm always curious about what different setups would be like but I'd hate to waste money on stems that I don't know if I'd like or not. Thanks for showing us your toys!
ODI long neck lock on are the best grip ever made and it's not even close. Had mine since August right after they were released, I ride the piss out of them and they are still on my bike with many hours of use remaining.
Hey Ali, I noticed you are running the 5010’s flip chip in the high position. Have you had a chance to try the low yet? Any trials advantages to a slightly higher BB?
I live by clip les, i even ride pure jumps with clips. I love how loose it lets you get, i no longer have to worry about keeping tension on the peddles and actually move more around the bike because of this. So I will love to you try clips!
Ali Clarkson If you ever decide to try clips I would advice the dmr v twin peddles, it is as close to feeling like flats as you can get and has a very adjustable platform height and pins. Even clipped out I still manage to go down small rock gardens without a problem, you know dmr peddles and that if someone had to create a clip less peddles that would feel like a flat it would be them.
You need to borrow one of Danny’s eBikes to make a “Ali does Deliveroo” video after Covid,I’ll lend you my account. Ride safe, stay safe, best wishes to you and yours, cheers.
I believe you can reverse (right to left and vice versa) the levers on your 5010 so the loose bolt will be on top instead of at the bottom of the levers.
I have Crossmark 1s on my general stuffing around, commuter, XC bike. Very affordable, very available, quite sticky. Not the longest life and a bit heavy (wire bead), but you can’t argue with the price. AUD$30 which probably means they cost you two bottle caps and a bread tag in most other countries.
Ahaha I had the exact same problem.... Magura MT7 caliper didn't fit in my old Scott Genius seat stay. But I really want those brakes, they are awesome, so I upgraded the bike for a 2017 Santa Cruz 5010 CC (used). Keep up the good work Ali !
Interesting video Ali, gives an insight into the different bike types & features like the rimpact insert. Any chance of something about trials bike set up? A sort of “tuning to suit the rider” tutorial. In particular, for me, is the positioning / angling of the bars and how it affects handling and favouring certain moves. Keep it up & stay safe 🤘🏻
Love the collection. I do miss seeing the Arcade though. I've been riding a Fourplay for a few years now and really the only street trials I've had. Unfortunately at the time no arcades available :( Now just thinking about making the change
Agree with you on rim vs disc brakes especially for trials. The only advantage I find for disc is for wet conditions. If riding through deep puddles, having the braking surface high and dry is an advantage. And looks of course. Disc are just sexier. But I run disc on my MTBs and rim on my road or hard surface bikes.
Ali Clarkson for sure. You’re spot on about the braking power towards the perimeter of the wheel being stronger and less flexible than toward the hub. Hadn’t heard it explained that way before. Makes perfect sense
Ooh my bike came with a fizik gobi too. But I changed it to an entity assault from my other bike because I need a cutout saddle and I don't care much about cushioning. Need more of them but they've been out of stock for awhile
Great video and nice to see that you still put so much effort in those. I am really looking forward to you opinion on that adjustable stem, especially how save it is. To an other safety topic. Why is a bolt missing at the front brake-disc of you Merida? Hope you can keep motivated during these times.
I notice you run a large spacer under the stem on the 5010. Is that purely for fit or does having the higher bar position feel better for trials riding on the bike? easier to get the wheel up? Also what brand is that silver rear brake mount? looks like a nice machined number.
Hi Ali! I bet you got a ton of requests like this one but I´ll try anway :P maybe you could do a video about taking a standard dirtbike and doing some trial stuff on it or even converting it to a trials bike (longer stem, trial bars...) and explaining the differences you feel while riding it. I am interested in doing this myself for a long time and I can not yet decide whether I get myself a streettrials bike or an old dirtjumper and build it up in a trialsy way. I read a lot of comments about existential differences between these two kinds of bikes but I can not get myself into believing that it would make much difference to a beginner...just a thought :)
Hi Ali My 8 year old son rides mountain bikes, trials bikes and road bikes. He's asked me to ask you do you ever ride a road bike or is that a bad word lol.
nice collection! I also can only afford 2nd hands. Have 2 bmx's both with problems, I'd like to get a trial and mtb one day tho, if i ever get the money
@@alex_4cj64 it's a downhill bike. It's bigger sturdier and the fork is alot larger so it's heavier. And downhill bikes run coils and coils are heavier than air shocks
Ive been looking for a new set of tires. I really like the continental race king rear and cross king front combo, but the race king only comes in a 2.2, I'd prefer 2.25 to 2.3. So I'm might wait on your tire reviews. Maybe while in quarantine you could make a tire roundup review video, it would be super helpful for anyone like me on 26er hoops. Tubeless tire selection is a bit limited and like you I want a balance between natural surface grip, and street rolling resistance.
Ali Clarkson thanks! That's helpful, I've felt that flex in the sideknobs on the cross king too. I've heard you say that about the table tops before, so I've avoided them. I'll be waiting on your review of the crossmarks. I might try a vittoria on one wheel since the investment is relatively low in comparison.
That last bike is over 5grand new. What’s a good Trials bike for under 1000? I don’t see them much in the states but miss bmx but rather have a bigger tire bike.
It is incredibly difficult to find a retail shop that sells Street trials bikes. Tarty bike is always out of stock, do you have recommendations of places to purchase one?

That’s funny you bring up those commuter tires I was thinking about buying some of those for my xc bike Schwabe fat Frank’s Please let me know what you think
i used to be on the maxxis minion too!! the tires is amazing.. till recently i got a recommendation from one of my mate about this Vittoria MARTELLO. Ohh goodness its better. but the trick to it is that you have to be pushing it to grip. correct tyres pressure it grips roots during climbs too. you can try check it out on review first. =)

Hey Ali when this quarantine situation is over I'd like to get more seriously into street trials, but I'm a afraid of my cheap xc bike snapping in half and the main issue i have is that the used market for trials bikes in Croatia is non-existant. Do you know any cheap bikes i could buy that are cheaper than the inspired flow and are fit for people who are 185cm tall?
You could look into czar or ozonys 🤔 they are a bit cheaper but still well above 1000€ Or maybe import a used one from Germany/gb/France with the hope that the bike is alright and the seller honest about any damages/dents on the frame🤔 I think for around 800-1000€ you get a decent street trials bike on the used market in Germany😊

Does it make a difference if you run DHF as rear and DHRII front?
I put some of those ODI elite pros on my XC bike. Oddly, the packet came with two the same so one of them has to have the lock on clamp upside down. 😡
Ali Clarkson seems like it, since one clamp has to be upside down for the grip pattern to be the same on both sides.
I think a lot of grips are like that. They aren't necessarily handed
Tim Cave I suppose it wouldn’t matter if the grip pattern just repeats all the way around, rather than having a front and back.
