Rebuilding My First Bike : Retro GT

  • I'm doing a slightly different style of video this week. I've been watching a lot of restoration videos from Tysytube and My Mechanics and I like their lack of music and voice over with simple text graphics. I thought I'd see if I could do something similar.
    ‪@TysyTube‬
    ‪@mymechanics‬
As for the subject matter, I'm really pleased to be building with this frame as it's something I've wanted to do for years, it's handy that a lot of people seem to have been bitten by the retro bug or have come back into riding after a long break and are dusting off the old bikes, I'm hoping this video will be of interest :)
I had most of the parts needed but I did need a couple of things. The forks were kindly donated by Danny Macaskill, tartybikes.co.uk provided the spokes and Ebay got me the rim and nicknacks.
I'm yet to ride it but I can't wait to give it a try!
What do you think? Also tan or black tyres?
    Thanks for watching!

I rode that and others has new full sus bikes and I hammered the downhill and kept up they were shocked! I've always wanted to use a half links instead of full master links to get the fit just right on my single speed. They sell individual links, but I'd just buy a whole chain and then I'd have a bunch of links. Super cool to see a single speed build like this. Really awesome to see freewheels like that too.

1999 GT Tempest for me, Was going to only use my spares box just to get it up and running but the frame came up so pretty im now going for a thought out setup, 3x9 with the view of maybe going 1x9 in the future, XT rear derailleur(spares box front cos possible future 1x9) independent shifter and brake levers, Blue Kevlar cables, blue rear brake booster on V brakes with cartridge pads, front disc(crappy mechanical from the spares box just now but will be hydrolic soon) , might go for hydrolic front and rear rim brakes, dont know, depends how good the current setup proves to be, its certainly been a lot of fun thinking about instead of just simply bolting on whatever fits from the box, hope you have as much fun with yours.

Very good aluminium bike frame. I currently ride on one.
When i found that bike it was just some old junk with a broken fork and pretty much no parts. Whoever had it painted it with a dark-green that was ugly to look at.
I sand blasted all of it and rebuilded it from scratch. The only original paint that remain on it are the inner "GT" Logo on the lower triangle.
A decent bike that i have been abusing a lot and never failed on me so far. I went a bit crazy and made it custom 4 brakes. 2 V-Brakes and 2 Disc Brakes. 4 Brake levers.

Few time ago had the oportunity to have a GT Outpost trail from 1995, didnt think twice, got it, put some modern parts and im rocking it since then. It reminds me of the GT Avalanche. Those retro bikes are so much fun and incredibly good to ride, they bring back some good old memories. Nice vid man. Keep rocking. Cheers from Brasil.

From someone that learned to build wheels without any instructions and failing a lot before succeeding your video on wheel building was really well done and easy to understand. I've tried to explain stepping on the spokes right after a fresh build but didnt know how exactly to go about letting others know why we do it, till I saw your video and it all made sense. We can send a fresh build without stepping on it all the way around on both sides but in short order the spokes will bed in on the rim and hub and slightly release tension so it seems like the spokes loosened up after the first couple rides(but in reality the spokes bedded In which lessened the initial tension)so we are basically destressing the spokes to eliminate early spoke stretching and keep the wheel tension so we dont require as much maintenance down the road.

Uncanny... I spent a couple of evenings last week resurrecting my '96 (bought in '97) GT Pantera. The frame is almost identical to that. I've kept mine as close as I could to its original purpose, though I've had to make some concessions for the same reasons. I love the beefy welds, and polished alu look too. I'm glad I've kept it this long.

This is really well-done. I like how, unlike a lot of bike restorers, you use new parts rather than old stuff you have lying around or searched out. I have a 1999 GT Rebound,, which is loaded with sentimental value but has seen much better days. I was ready to say goodbye until I found how difficult it is to get hold of a new bike right now, and at wildly inflated prices. I don't know a thing about building bikes, though, and so I am hesitant to try this. Anyway, thanks for adding to my knowledge store. Never saw your other videos, but my vote is for no music in every case.
