The fact that you're taking the time to explain the common mistakes of a beginner is actually giving me a chance to see exactly what i am doing wrong. That's a noticeable plus in every single one of your tutorial, which make me incline to actually listen and apply what you're teaching here, since you do tell us what a mistake, as well as a success, will look like, instead of only telling us the latter. Keep being fluent!
Just hopped five times with aplomb! Been trying for years and this is the first video that clicked. _"you have to make your body go there first"_ - why hasn't anyone else said that?! Obvious in hindsight, but key for a beginner! Took three sessions and i made my 5 hop breakthrough. Loads more to learn. Have this video on repeat. Thank you @aliclarkson !!
To anyone learning this just want to mention it takes a LOT of time and practice to get comfortable. It took me 3-4 weeks of practicing about an hour each day before I could just hop in place indefinitely. To actually get it controlled and relaxed it will take even longer. Relaxed is an important one because, as Ali mentions, it is extremely exhausting with bad technique. Don't get discouraged and keep at it!
Started riding trials today, made some progress with backhops however just realised from this video that i'm pulling my bars up rather than transferring weight back when cranking up into them. Going from a bench or ledge I don't tend to have that problem, so big thanks to all the videos you do Ali and congrats on the new edit.
Thanks for taking the time to make such great content. I'm 56 in a couple of weeks, have a wee DMRE Sect DJ bike, and really want to learn some trials tricks. JUSt working on basic track standing now. Too hot to gear up properly, but will get back to that soon, to work on manuals. Meantime, this back-hop tutorial gives me some great stuff to work on.
Excellent job Ali, a few few friends have met you out riding in Glasgow and say you had super helpfully tips. Genuinely glad you started this series as I’ve not been as lucky to meet you in person when out on the bike 👍
I've been working on these for the better part of a year, starting to get the hang of them. Once I got to where I could consistently hop 10 or more times, I was stuck without progress for a while. Always hopping backwards and in circles. Decided I needed to set a goal,, so my goal was to hop down the two stair set at the skatepark. Was able to get that fairly quick. Something about having to look at the steps just made it work for me. After that I was able to hop almost in one spot and even pedal kick forward. Now I can do the six stair set at the park. I still need to clean them up and find it difficult to switch from forward hops to hopping in place, but setting a goal to aim for was huge for me.
Very clear, calm, confidence inspiring instructions that only a master could give. Sharing is a noble trait! Great work! Thanks, it is good to understand all the effort and skills that go into a single component of making a fluid series of riding moves that are not normally individually the focus for analysis during a recreational view of one of your videos. What I'm saying is that these element details can be taken for granted if not studied in their individual own right.
My man Al 🤙 I just commented on one of Tom Cardys videos for a back hop tutorial. You’re one of the main reasons I’m trying to get into trials, got myself an Arcade Pro. Cheers so much for the great content
I’ve waited for ages to see a great quality, well explained tutorial oh how to backhop. This is exactly it! I love how many tips and tricks there are to help you out and all the techniques are explained in deep detail. I can’t wait to see more tutorials pop up on your channel Ali. And can’t wait to start learning how to backhop! Keep up the great work Ali, hard work pays off! 😊🤘🏼
I always learn something new from watching your videos even if it isn't a proper tutorial. For that I'd like to thank you Ali!! I could've used the tips in the video on my last video for sure... Ride On Man :-)
I don't know when I stopped cycling. I have Dany MacAskill's bike from way Back Home (the very first model with the cleats for the pad + disc brakes) and UA-cam has stopped showing me your videos. and by chance I came across your videos which made me want to put it back. thank you!
Nice! I just started getting these after practicing all these techniques for maybe the last year or so. The missing piece of the puzzle for me was that I wasn't keeping my core, shoulders, and hips engaged enough and was just folding backwards like a limp noodle. Being in a strong position made a world of difference!
This video is sooo helpful! I just want to go out now and improve my skills on the back wheel. But unfortunately it snows in germany.. Thanks Ali! And your channel seems to be much more professionnel. Its amazing what has changed from your first vlog till now
Love this, I've just purchased an onza blaze with 20 inch wheels, being 6 foot I'm really struggling with how far over the front wheel I hang, I can hop once on the back wheel but if I try to pedal hop I just wipe out and land on my back haha only the 3rd time trying to ride at the age of 30 so I'm taking my time
You're very good bud. I hop backwards on my back tire, and that's as far as I've got with years of practice. I don't want to be negative, but I just know there's things I can't do, like I remember there was a guy doing turn downs on this jump we were jumping, and it was just something I couldn't do. I don't think your video will change my abilities, but it was interesting insight.
Nice video Ali! I'd like to add in some tips from my experience learning back hops, i recommend learning to manual for a short distance, helped me to control the bike side to side and not fall sideways by using your knees, makes you feel comfortable in the balance point too! Can't wait to see the new patreon content too!
Just wanted to say thanks for this video. Went out back with my DJ and what do you know - 10 mins later I did a (1 (one)) hop! So yeah, I guess we're both professional trials riders now. I wonder what discipline I should master next.. 🤔
I learned back wheel hop with a 32 pounds 26x4.8" tires fatbike with 455mm chainstay. That was not easy to be honnest and it required months of practice, almost a whole summer... but now I can back wheel hop the shit out of any bike !!!
This vid inspired me yesterday. I spent 2 hours on my DJ bike and learned to pedal stroke into a hop. The most hops I was able to get was 4, but I will keep at it. Thanks Ali!
Nice video! I’d love to see a video on how to do a nose wheel fakie, if that is the proper name. Also the one where you use your foot on the front tyre to go backwards and keep your rear wheel up
Took me years just to learn basic backhops and I'm only beginning to feel comfortable doing them. I thought I'd never figure it out! Now I'm dreaming that one day I'll be able to do them half as good as you. What tutorials next? Maybe stoppie but really you're so good at everything and these tutorials are awesome so any moves really, and tell us how long it took you to develop some of these moves.
I was curious to see if there are noticable differences between your technique and mine. It looks like you keep your rear brake locked through the really small stationary hops, whereas I unlock it for every hop, even the small ones. (At least I think so) I'll give it a test to see if changing this will improve my control. :)
@@Ali_Clarkson I started practicing those not long ago and I am up to like 4 hops but I needed to get some good tips and you sure helped. I believe it's a bit harder on a full suspension MTB I lose a lot of energy but it's a good workout haha
Would really love if you done a tail whip started doing bar turns next up is for me to learn to whip. Keep up the good work fella good to see knowledge being shared
Grazie Ali, mi è piaciuto molto il tuo video, Io sono really beginners, se hai altri video per principianti sicuramente li guarderó tutti…. Ps se hai fatica a tradurre te lo riscrivo in inglese 👍👍👍👍😜😜😜
Could you try and do a hopscotch? (not sure if i spelt it right). the thing where you go along a ladder kind of thing with two feet, one foot, two, one... But instead of feet, wheels. If you want rules I would say when it's both wheels, they have to touch the floor at basically the same time. You should also try going to a kids park and doing the real hopscotch to get the spacing right. I hope I'm making sense, if not just ask and ill explain more
Hi Ali, I am 13 and I have an onza bird trails bike but I am too short to get on the back wheel to hop. I can sort of get it up but I struggle to get it. Thanks. Also Enjoying the vids 👍👍
Great video.Hoped i haven't spent 3 months learning how to hop but oh well.I think riders trying to master hopping will find it easier with these tips.I want to ask how can smb turn while hopping and from which direction(based on front foot)
Awesome tutorial. Any chance of getting a subscriber (or patreon supporter) special on an inspired bike? Maybe a custom build/color combo from you? I think learning trials would be more fun on a street trials bike.
I'm trying to learn back hops on my trail bike at the moment. I've already bend a cog on my cassette and straightened it when practising on the bigger cogs. I find it much easier in the bigger cogs but should I be learning it in the smaller ones that won't flex as much?
Awesome tutorial Ali! One question: do you have any tips on increasing the distance between hops? I can barely manage to hop from one side of a train rail to the other. I would love to get some more than that 😅
For anyone out there that has carbon or expensive bars, I highly recommend ‘Level Bar Skins’ , they make awesome looking, protective vinyls for your bars. Use the code ‘lemains69’ for 10% off
I don't understand how you do these. I'm on a second round now. I got myself a Inspired Flow 24" three years ago, rode about a year on it, and then sold it, 'cos I just didn't learn anything. Now I decided to give it another go, so two weeks ago I got myself a 20" Echo. I've ridden on it for two weeks (not every day), and the last two times just tried to learn backhops. I can pull it back, and sometimes jump about 1-2 cm one time, but that's it. I'm not even close to hop 2 times. And in this same stage I was on my Inspired. Well, it is good exercise, that I have to admit, but it so, so difficult.
You need to lean back and squeeze the rear brake super hard, I tried doing that but I couldn’t do it. The one thing that I learned I was doing wrong is I was doing the hops so slow, and waiting too long to do the next one. I started try to do it faster, and I was able to learn it.
I can back hop easily and jump onto high objects right to the rear but I struggle to hop in a circle or in other words change direction when on the back wheel. Do you have any tips to learn this?
It already took months of trying to get to back wheel by pedal and... I still can't. I can hit the pedal and lift the front wheel but most of the time I end up having my body too forward. I have a great fear of falling backward... And at the same time usually I leaning to unleading (or what's the word) foot (so it would be comfortable to step down of a bike). Trying to fight all of that but with a little result yet.
Hey Ali, awesome video, mate. I've been playing around with back wheel hops for a while now on my hardtail MTB. they're coming slowly but I was wondering, would a set of riser bars help my progression. The hyperactive hopping is some proper monty python special
