    Than you so much. I'm a 70 year old widow and this vacumn works for me because it's light weight. It wasn't running very well so I followed your instructions before giving up on it. I didn't know where the filter was until I watched your video. I cleaned the filter and found the intake was clogged. All cleaned and now running well.

    Excellent video. I like the way, at the end, you went back over all the problems one should trouble shoot. I loved my Dyson but was about ready to give up until I saw this. Now my beloved Dyson is back in business! Thanks.

    One other failure point is the 6 narrow cyclone tubes inside the tank. If the cyclone tubes are blocked, that will also cause the problem intermittent shutoff issue. You can clean these with a 2 cm pipe cleaner, just gently run the pipe cleaner into the tubes, rotating and scrubbing out any dust accumulation. Also wipe out the exterior of the cyclone and mesh to insure consistent airflow. Tap out the cyclone into a trash can to let any loose dust fall out.
    No disassembly is required usually, but if you want a more thorough cleaning, you can disassemble the entire cyclone mechanism and clean all of the individual components.

    This solved my problem. Thank you. I have struggled with my Dyson for over a year. I didn’t even use it anymore and was going to donate it to the thrift store. But cleaning the contact points solved it, so now I am going to keep it and use it again every day.

    I have a Dyson DC44 Animal that had the exact same problem. I knocked the dirt off the filter and cleaned all mating contacts on the battery and vac. Used a pencil eraser making sure all eraser particles were removed and it works like new again. Many thanks for the help

    When the filter is clogged, less air gets into the impeller, which actually makes it easier for the motor to turn it, which contrary to popular belief, actually reduces the load on the battery. ( This is why you hear the motor run up faster on all vacuums when the inlet is obstructed.) This enables us to deduce with full certainty it was dirty contacts that were causing your problem.

      No, more resistance in airflow causes the fan to work harder therefore pull more amps.

    Worked Great for me. Had the power shut off issue. Flipped the filter and it worked a little better, but tried it without the filter and no power shut off issue. Washed the filter to see if that helps. If not I will just get a new filter. Thanks for the video!

    I think it's the battery contacts, going to try this myself today. I have disassembled the entire unit and cleaned it back to new, washing everything and letting it dry fully.
    I used to be able to vacuum the entire house with this thing (3000sq.ft) now I have to press the button 10 times to clean one room as it continues to turn off.

      It's a huge indictment on the Dyson designers, it seems to me. Indeterminate failure to start problems of these things pervade the internet, it seems to me.

    Thank you for this! I could not work out why it was working like this, and after watching your video, I worked through the machine bit by bit. I had already cleaned the filter, and on my model, the battery does not separate from the handle. I cleaned the points anyway, and the head only to find it was still cutting out. I then realised that 'where' the head clicks into the down-tube, it was blocked. After clearing this, the machine is as good as new. Your video gave me the idea that I needed to look further.

    • @davidberry3957

      Chic Charles it may be the connection on the tub. there's a blacky grey rim around the top where the power runs down to the power head. you'll see as its only on 1 side of tub. make sure you have connection there & nothing obscuring it. make surd they are getting connection & clean. if you have s gap tinfoil folded up will conduct if you put it in. just make sure not to touch both points with foil or you will short it or hive your self a little shock. test small head to see power is running to head unit. if it is & still nothing,either belt has come off or power head motor is blown. I've yet to open up a head unit as all these fixes helped me when my 59 stopped after I cleaned it out. goodluck. I bought a supposedly broken head unit hoping maybe this was the issue & it was fine. so I got a pretty new head with nice clean brush bar for 20$

    Even with routine cleaning and diligent filter cleaning, my handheld just stopped altogether. When talking with Dyson customer service, the responses imply that that this has not been properly cared for. Every bit of care that could be taken was routinely applied to care for my expensive birthday gift. At one point the culprit was the battery not maintaining contact with the terminals that conducted the power to run the machine. Dyson sent me a brand new battery, it worked beautifully for a little while and has not come on since. This simple fix demonstrates what needs to be done routinely, but does not resolve the machine NOT coming on at all.

  • @fixed.computer
    @fixed.computer 6 років тому

    I think this a problem inherent with the design on this model. They put the filter between two parts of the vacuum cleaner which can come apart and there’s a filter presence sensor which can be affected by motion or putting pressure on the vacuum cleaner that flexes the middle of the unit where the filter sensor is. When enough flex happens the interlock gets tripped (it doesn’t see the filter is installed) and the vacuum cleaner shuts off. This is why some people are able to alleviate the symptoms although temporarily by removing and replacing the filter, because it’s really just toggling the actuator on the filter presence sensor. The sensor I’m talking about has a little black rubberized boot over it and is directly above the two power contacts on the back half of the dyson DC31 and possibly other same-generation models.

    • @ardwych4881
      @ardwych4881 3 роки тому

      I wish this were entirely accurate, Matthew, but as James Mitchell says above, there's no small filter switch/sensor on my model from the English-speaking southern hemisphere. Problem of green flashing lights and no-go persists. Just-too-clever design, imo.

  • @zzz7zzz9
    @zzz7zzz9 6 років тому

    you can't say the filter has to be cleaned "once a month". everyone uses their machine differently. some may need cleaned once a week, and some may rarely use their little dyson. it needs cleaned when it's visibly dusty/dirty.

  • @RobDucharme

    I wish it were that simple with mine... What's happening with mine is the power head randomly shuts off (even when it's completely cleaned). The vacuum still runs, but the head will stop turning. Letting go of the trigger and then starting it again fixes it for a short time.

    • @saxgrrrl
      @saxgrrrl 7 років тому

      I had the same issue and emailed Dyson. The advice that fixed the problem for me was to clean the contact point between the handle and the dust catching drum. (You see these when you take the unit apart to remove the filter - not the same as the battery contacts in the vid here) This has fixed the motorhead not turning problem for me. Hope it works for you.
      Now I have this intermittent running problem - even when the filter is clean - so I will give the battery terminals a clean now... fingers crossed!

    These Dyson vacuums have no end of problems, UA-cam is full of videos outlining the faults in these lemons and how you have to go to the trouble of fixing manufacturing faults, the best way of fixing all the faults in Dyson vacuums is to throw them in the garbage bin and buy a reliable brand, there are plenty out there.
