My Father was a Vietnam Vet. When Ali lost to Frazier...Dad shouted "The Louisville Lip is SHUT!!" He resented Ali not going into the service. Years later we were watching a thing on Ali on TV and Dad looked at me...obviously remembering what he had said over those years to me culminating in "The Lip is shut" and he said- "I was wrong and he was right." That was all he had to say.

The thing that I appreciate most about Jesse is his "In Your Face" style of communication. This video is quite different because here he shows his sensitive, emotional side. But it's funny that I see Jesse here in this "boxing interview" because whenever I hear his social and political commentary I feel like each of his statements is like a veritable punch in the face. I posted this as I was frustrated with the selfishness of the Republican Party before COVID. Many Americans of all types are having issues that could be solved by elected officials if they would simply do their jobs. I just remember being impressed by the man I watched wrestling on television and former Navy SEAL performed as Governor. While I am a Democrat, I would gladly vote for any politician who does what's best for their constituency. That's why I thought Gov. Ventura would be a great fit. Especially now.

Your Uncle was right. That was really going against the tide at that time. You just simply listened and responded when your Government asked you to serve. It was stunning to hear, although he was really bringing to the forefront what was already a strong undercurrent perception with many. Vietnam being plain wrong. The difference was he literally sacrificed himself (come what may) to his conviction, and put it right on the tin. What concerned me at the time was, I knew Ali was just talking trash/showboating in the boxing arena, but I wondered if the stiff shirts in government would just percieve him as a loudmouth and now he's getting in 'their' faces..so now they're going to make a real good example out of him and hit back hard with some real jail time. Fortunately it didn't happen. It was still of course BS that he was robbed of 3 of his best fighting years he and we missed..would've been phenomenal- also he would've been able to get out at the right time..his whole fighting arc would've been much more in tune, and I'll bet he would've left at the right time. He once said that he was only staying in as long as he was so as to make sure that his family would be well taken care of, his childrens education etc. He would've had those years already, had they not taken them away from him, and had been able to make a perfectly timed exit. There are Certain videos I'm keeping in my Muhammad File..this is definitely one of them...turned out to be more than I thought it would be.

Today I discovered that I'm emotional as I sat and watched two tough men getting tearing up and getting emotional as they remember Mohamad Ali. Jesse Ventura and Mike Tyson.

When I was a young guy in college I remembered my brief encounter with Jesse when he was a governor at a Dallas airport around early 2000s, not sure the year. He had an aura of authencity and greater than life aura around him. He was pretty down to earth.

My dad came from Yugoslavia and boxed semi pro. He taught me how to box when I was a kid in order to help me protect myself. My dad loved Ali and said he was a man for standing up for what he believed in. He didn’t really try to explain to me what Ali did etc as I was a kid and wouldn’t have understood. All I remember is that my dad loved Ali as a boxer, his style, his mouth and his beliefs.

But it's funny that I see Jesse here in this "boxing interview" because whenever I hear his social and political commentary I feel like each of his statements is like a veritable punch in the face. I posted this as I was frustrated with the selfishness of the Republican Party before COVID. Many Americans of all types are having issues that could be solved by elected officials if they would simply do their jobs. I just remember being impressed by the man I watched wrestling on television and former Navy SEAL performed as Governor. While I am a Democrat, I would gladly vote for any politician who does what's best for their constituency. That's why I thought Gov. Ventura would be a great fit. Especially now.

I'm too young to understand the significant of the Vietnam war and Ali's posture......my uncle went to the war and he explained that at the time it was extremely brave of Ali to take that position.....yet he did....my respects to both Ali and Ventura
Your Uncle was right. That was really going against the tide at that time. You just simply listened and responded when your Government asked you to serve. It was stunning to hear, although he was really bringing to the forefront what was already a strong undercurrent perception with many. Vietnam being plain wrong.
The difference was he literally sacrificed himself (come what may) to his conviction, and put it right on the tin.
What concerned me at the time was, I knew Ali was just talking trash/showboating in the boxing arena, but I wondered if the stiff shirts in government would just percieve him as a loudmouth and now he's getting in 'their' faces..so now they're going to make a real good example out of him and hit back hard with some real jail time. Fortunately it didn't happen.
It was still of course BS that he was robbed of 3 of his best fighting years he and we missed..would've been phenomenal- also he would've been able to get out at the right time..his whole fighting arc would've been much more in tune, and I'll bet he would've left at the right time. He once said that he was only staying in as long as he was so as to make sure that his family would be well taken care of, his childrens education etc. He would've had those years already, had they not taken them away from him, and had been able to make a perfectly timed exit.
There are Certain videos I'm keeping in my Muhammad File..this is definitely one of them...turned out to be more than I thought it would be.

And Ventura's right; Ali gave up what was at that time the most valuable title in all of sports, as well as his ability to earn a living, in the name of principle. I think Ali is one of the 2 best fighters of all time, but what will impress me until I kick is how he stood up to The Man in 1967, when that was a dangerous thing for a black man to do. When I was a young guy in college I remembered my brief encounter with Jesse when he was a governor at a Dallas airport around early 2000s, not sure the year. He had an aura of authencity and greater than life aura around him. He was pretty down to earth.

My dad came from Yugoslavia and boxed semi pro. He taught me how to box when I was a kid in order to help me protect myself. My dad loved Ali and said he was a man for standing up for what he believed in. He didn’t really try to explain to me what Ali did etc as I was a kid and wouldn’t have understood. All I remember is that my dad loved Ali as a boxer, his style, his mouth and his beliefs.
