I learned how to drive in one of those vans, and when my family went camping when I was a kid I would sleep in it. You have taken it to a whole other level and I love it. I completely agree about the old Westie layout it was the best use of space, the pop top perfected it!
The best Astro van build I have seen. I just picked up a 2001 GMC Safari (exact same as the Astro) and would love to have this setup. I wish JJ were in or near NYC. Great job JJ :-)
Beautiful job JJ. Like you I had few skills for building but dod do a similar layout in my Astro until a wider bed was required. But that’s the beauty of Van life...so many different ways to arrange the interior
Good on gas..plus awd and last is very low in price...one more reason to buy, very good on stealth. I did all the looking of many vehicles...Astro is the best choice. Hey,I love your build.
JJ do you have plans drawn up for this build??? I have a 96' Astro and I want to do a partial camping build/van life build. This is the kind of set up I would like to do, but kinda want to keep the side panels and pockets and build over top, so you can still access the pockets and cup holders etc. Any ideas where to find plans if you don't have them. I am not a carpenter by any means, and I am physically not able to do some things, so this build looks like something I could manage. Great job JJ the cabinet and bed are amazing. Oh and I would not be cutting the roof out for a pop up.
I was trying to find more information in the van an saw a news paper article saying that van had been stolen. This is a very nice build. I will be stealing some of your ideas.
I have spent the past 17 years work in a factory, taken care of my family and building a family life. But I have been think alot of building a van like yours, that way when money is tight I can make a trip on a budget. So any way how did you lift your van. I didn't know the make lift kits for van.
Question: Being 5'8'' like you, could I sleep (fit) sideways in your back seat or bench? I am thinking of buying an Astrovan for camping. Thank you, Javier. Oh, I just saw that it doesn't get all the way from side to side, but if it did go from side to side of the van, do you fit in there to sleep (if you didn;t have the upper bed).?

I imagine you could take an old captain's chair from a gm conversion van and probably mount your astro seat to the hardware. May just have to fab some mounts to match your bolt holes and what not.
Toolbarn I'm just curious if his Astro van in the video is awd or rwd? I'm guessing rwd? since there's no awd symbol on the front. Do rwd vans do ok in snow?
