I think it needs to sound more thick to have a Grunge sound like Soundgarden, for Nirvana it needs more fizz. To my ear it was more like AiC if they were more metal leaning.

Break down and listen to the isolated guitar tracks from the majority of grunge albums and the bass soon thins out.
