Nice video. If you haven't figured out how to do patch changes while using the External MIDI instrument plug-n you can do it by selecting a region in the track you just recorded and then opening the Event List (command 7) for that region. You can then insert a program change by selecting Program Change near the top left of the window and clicking the + button just to the left of the pop-up. Once the event is created you can enter where you want it to occur as well as patch number and bank number using the pop-up "Num" and "Val" fields on the "Program Change" event line that you just created.
Hey Frank, thanks so much for posting this helpful tip, really appreciated :) I was not aware of this process so will try it out and maybe even make a quick update video referencing yourself and this technique if that's OK? Nice one :)
Seems like a good tip, (manual patch changes embedded in the event list track is exactly how I used to do it in the eighties 😀). Bank changes might get a little complicated depending on the manufacturer of the external device however, back when some gear was made there was not yet a standard on how this should be handled (people did not expect devices to have more than 128 patches) which lead to several different methods. Off the top of my head the Matrix 1000 comes to mind. I think you need to send mod wheel at 127 then a program change representing the bank and then mod wheel at rest and then patch change… I think. 😮😂 I purged the memory of this dark art long long ago.
@@blackgoldaudio My pleasure. There’s really a lot you can do in the event window. I often forget about it until I really need it. Another useful alternative to the piano roll editor!
@@blackgoldaudio @blackgoldaudio if I may, I have a Yamaha moxf and was able to get the program change going for preset 1 with MSB=63 and LSB=0. But when I go to the next preset 2, it calls for MSB=63 and LSB= 1. My issues is 1.) The program change coincides with preset 1 and not preset 2 (like when I go to another patch) and 2.) The rest of the LSB go up 1, 2, 3 for each preset.. where would I put those value numbers. 3.and could this stop my presets from changing to the correct patch and remaining on only one???. I appreciate you taking the time thanks

I managed to my minilogue integrated in my logic template. Thank you so much! A couple quick questions: How did you switch to an external out plug-in channel strip at 14:41? Also, I'd like to be able to change the parameters on the synth patches themselves and then store those parameters in the session for later recall. So, not just the factory preset. Do you know if that's possible? Thanks!
Hi...glad this has helped you, always nice to hear. In regard to your questions, the channel strip is the same as before 14.41, however if you change you MIDI channels the fader appears, I matched mine with my synth MIDI channel out. Regarding recording parameter changes on external devices this can be done by recording the changes either at the same time as playing a region or re-recording parameter changes over the region. There are other factors to consider though, IE if your synth sends these parameter messages out... it take a bit of work but can be useful.
Thx mate. Very useful. I am trying to do the same with my Boss VE-500 Vocal Performer, so I can trig program change from Logic Pro (or Ableton). Is it the same process ? Cheers !
This is very useful. Months ago I got part way through mapping all the banks in my XV-5080 before getting frustrated and realizing that I still had 8 other external synths to do. I set it aside and although I hate to admit it, I forgot how to DO it! lol. So thanks very much for this refresher. It’s kinda astounding that the external midi device plug in is SO useless. I was playing around with it today and I see no way to program custom bank messages into it. What do they expect us to do with THAT? Perhaps it’s not yet finished?
Thanks for the lovely comments.. glad it was of use and yes i tend to agree with you regarding the EMD :) I hope you get the other synths sorted.. it's so much easier to work with once you do, however you till have to move to their location to move external parameters :(
@@blackgoldaudio I am still avoiding using the external midi device plug-in, I will take a look at what Frank has to say and see if it will make things simpler. Thanks.
Hi Charlie, thanks for the comment, unfortnetly I've not explored making changes with a controller yet.. It's problably doable but time is a factor for me right now, never enough hours in the day! All the best. Si :)

This is the type of tutorial I like. Ages without seeing someone who actually knows stuff. A master. Thank you.
My pleasure, i'm glad you got something form it :)
this was great and I am glad that I found this. it helped a lot..

Very use ful video. Thank u sir. Do u have any Idea for any application on Ipad that do this same ?
thanks... unfortunately not, ive never tried it on the Logic Pro iPad version. Worth a look though :)
Brilliant, thank you

No worries at all! I actually think I might have the solution, in theory at least.
