Great explanation! Direct and to the point. I have been wanting to incorporate my hardware gear into Logic Pro X for a while and got it partially working except for the ability to choose patches and some other midi settings. Your video helped me confirm I'm on the right path! I have an upgraded Korg M1+1, Roland XP-50, Korg 05/RW, Alesis SR-16, Yamaha AN-200, Yamaha PSS-680, and some outboard effect processors that were all "pre-USB" so everything I own uses standard Midi "IN/OUT" 5-DIN (midi) cabling. All that connects to my MOTU Midi Express XT Midi Interface back to my computer. If you or anybody out there knows more about the programming or importing synth patches and other midi controllable things into Logic Pro X, I'd love to hear more about it. Again - I loved your video tutorial! It has made me want to revisit my hardware integration again.
I do the exact same thing as you do but I can hear my synth even if I mute the external instrument channel. I check the mixer to see where it's coming from and everything is off and yet the Moog can be heard if I play it (not triggering any track on the mixer on logic)...I use logic and interface is scarlet and the setup is identical to yours..any idea why?
I need an Audio Interface. Wew! This helps me alot!! I was really confused why i cant hear anything when i bounce my Midi Sounds. So i need an interface to return back the signal to Logic. Wew!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thank alot! Cheers!
Very useful tuto! well described! I just do not catch why you connect the Moog voyager via 5 min din, and not in USB midi... Is it just because it does not have USB midi connection? many thanks!
I have a Yamaha PSR-S950, which has various midi styles. A midi style consists of 6 midi instruments, which I’m sure logic can record on one midi track. Cubase 8 has a menu selection under the EDIT drop list which can DISSOLVE the one midi style track into 6 midi instrument tracks. This really speeds up production. My question is, does Logic Pro X have the same feature capability? Plz advise asap because I’m on the fence if I should purchase Logic Pro X or Cubase 12. Thanks….
This is incredibly helpful, wish I found this sooner! I have recently been having a problem with a continuous midi note triggering my hardware synths with this kind of setup and can’t seem to ID the source of it. Using a PreSonus 68c to send MIDI DIN to a Poly D, and to capture audio from the same. No MIDI input is connected to prevent looping. Going bonkers trying to solve it
I have the 6i6 as well! I have a micro korg synth and a Keystation 88 Mk3. I connect the midi from the Mk3 to my 6i6 and come out of that to my micro korg. I record the midi with mk3 and then I can print out the with inputs 3+4 with my microkorg. Eventually I may own a 2nd analog synth one day!
Have a Mac mini with 16 gigs of RAM, running logic, pro X. My question, if I get another Mac mini and Network Ten, could I have the VS TVs on the other one in process on the other Mac mini? Or would that be considered external hardware?
I remember using Sound Diver with Logic back in the day. Awesome patch librarian to call up all my patches across all my external devices. How can Logic Pro X act as a patch librarian with a synecdoche dump?
So the old midi environment is gone like in Logic 8 or 9, where you saw all your external midi instruments you could edit etc? I have an old project with mostly midi instruments i want to get gid of. Better question,...where can i see all external midi instruments? When i open midi environment (cmd+0) i get a Logic 8 layout
I follow your vidéo. I used USB midi connexion with 2 Stereo cables, and a UAD device. Local control off on my Nord keyboard. Opened external midi on logic, and any sound runs into my daw. The keyboard dont write on logic . What is the problem ?
Could you kindly explain how to connect and record a synth sound module (Yamaha TX7) via midi into Logic using an ipad as controller? My ipad is wirelessly connected to Logic Pro and I'm trying to record both midi notes and print the audio (via Scarlett). Then I'd like to use Dexed instrument plugin to somehow get more sounds through the TX7.
Thanks for sharing . Have would you proceed if you would record straight the hardware synth into logic audio ( without any midi file ) ? And to have it quantized .
Mad love for this video! Would recording an analog's reverb work the same way if you wanted to use it as an external effect on an instrument or vocal? Bless your heart, thank you!
Can you help with how to set up my novation keyboard 49 to KORG M1 , when I connect other keyboard Like Oxygen it works but with novation keys I received zero sounds from M1 , PURITY, XPAND and tips on that pls
I connected my poly d via midi into my pc and with a 1/4 stereo cable into my interface but the sound that comes out is very quiet. can someone help me ?
try a mono cable, you may have a phase cancelation issue going on, also check your interface input with a different instrument and cable to make sure that your input is functioning properly.
Really useful video. However when I try this method, the printed recording contains low levels of the other tracks in the project (e.g. I reckon the bassline but the audio file has quiet hi hats in it - infuriating). Any idea why that would be???
Many thanks for this presentation -I tried this exact setup last night using a new Behringer MS-1, Mac mini and Focusrite 2i4 - and wasted the entire night fuckarsing around with poxy settings on the Mac - getting precisely nowhere. I really resent the time wasted trying to do something relatively simple, but made unnecessarily complicated because wanky engineers can't be objective about what they're supposed to be doing - ie design systems that work together - Once again THANKS
go in and edit your audio track. zoom in and you should see that things dont quite line up with the grid, so cut the track at the very beginning of the first note, delete the cut part to the left and drag the newly trimmed region on the right to the left until its properly aligned with the grid position where it should start. i hope this helps.
thanks guys - how do i get the poly D (and specifically its arpeggiator and sequencer) to listen to the TEMPO sent FROM Logic to it? Need to get it to properly sync
Thanks for the clear and comprehensive explanation. Saved this for future reference.
This is the clearest explanation I've heard of this process. Thank you!
this is such a well done video i've genuinely learned so much from this about how sound works
Thank you! Just got a Minilogue and wundered how to properly connect it to logic... you solved my problem in in 5min's, great!
You rule. Clear and concise. Thanks for the video.
Just what I was looking for, for my Poly D and Logic! Thanks a lot!!
Thank you; this got me out of the hole I was struggling with. Much appreiated.
Thank you for the help! You explained everything clearly.
Thank you for this! & Happy New Years everyone let’s make this the year we produce music and reach our goals
I'm switching from using a MIDI controller keyboard controlling a VST to a real synth and this is exactly what I needed to know!

You need to mute that channel in the Scarlett Control app.

Great video but my latency is out and tried fiddling with settings. My recording or response is early than should be ? Do you have solution please ?
Thank you for explaining and sharing this. It’s exactly the info I was trying to find. ✌🏻
(Unrelated but can’t not say it) - Omg your shirt - I’ve never been so jealous of a shirt in my life ! It rules!

the diagram at the beginning threw me off and confused me but i got it all working with just Synth>USB>Computer and Synth>audio interface>computer.

appreciate this - so clear thank you!
Excellent, thanks!
In logic 10.4.3 I get a lot of latency when I use audio track input monitoring as I need to keep buffer to 512. How can I fix that ? Thank you.
I remember using Sound Diver with Logic back in the day. Awesome patch librarian to call up all my patches across all my external devices. How can Logic Pro X act as a patch librarian with a synecdoche dump?
Yeah but what if you're using 3 or 4 synths at the same time??
This was super helpful, thank you so much!

awesome - have you ever been successful getting LOGIC to synch to an external midi via the Scarlett?
How would you get these two synths to sync arpeggiators for example?
How can I record my Korg Krome as midi basically want to use Krome Preset tones as midi directly
very clear man, thank you very much
For a live project (1h +-) with different midi tracks to drive hardware synths, would you use LIVE or LOGIC?
Thanks for sharing . Have would you proceed if you would record straight the hardware synth into logic audio ( without any midi file ) ? And to have it quantized .
Yo Spice! thx man. very hepful. x
really helpful, thanks!

how do you route MIDI to an audio track?
So the sound plays back onto the synth how can u make the sound play to headphones

Did you figure this out?

Brooo i love you .I literally went through the same exact thing. You noted my experience word for word . I thought I typed that 😭.
Ditto the guy before me!
It's taken me an age to find this simple (and therefore great) explaination.
Thanks buddy, much appreciated!
Jules
Nice shirt!
Chromeo is savage
Good video but never really explained it for me, I still have more questions than answers.
Chromeo!!!!
Useless. Never mentioned anything about recording latency or how to address it.
