  • Microfreak Modulation Source I've Never Used!
    Today we're looking at a Microfreak modulation source that I've never used, the key/arp source. This sends a different value to your selected destination depending on how far up or down you are on the actual keyboard! To be honest, the reason I ignored this source was simply because I didn't know what it did, and of course I feel extremely silly for waiting this long to check it out! Combined with the other sources on the Microfreak, you can design some truly incredible sounds! Enjoy the video :)

    I'm just starting with synths, and I'm blown away by my MF. This gave me even more stuff to try, thanks.

    Glad to hear you are still learning too. I'm in this game for 1 year and a half now and all I do is create sounds. Every now and then a tune comes up but mostely a song does not yet pop up. And that is ok I guess. I have fun and I discover. I think that's the point here. It's like Lego.

      The Lego analogy is great! There's always fun in following the instructions, but it's also a blast to ignore them and do your own thing :)

    I like this a lot....this thing has enormous potential. To coin a term I basically never leave the house because going down the rabbit hole with something that's basically cheap as chips is so rewarding.......

    Thanks for convincing me to get the micro freak. Just need to wait for it to get back in stock. It randomly runs out. Great videos man!

    A classic key tracking trick is to set it to 100% and modulate the center frequency of a bandpass or cutoff frequency of a LP with resonance jacked up. You can set the oscillator to a noise source and play the resonant filter peak chromatically.

    Cool trick, since I don’t have a microfreak I checked if this is also working on the Deluge, and happy to report it is. It’s called “Note” there and it is the 4rd button counted from the bottom in the right column.The right column and some buttons in the column next to it are the Deluge mod sources. To make a modulation first shift press the thing you want to modulate, for example “frequency” (which is filter cutoff, located in the top row in the middle) and then shift press the mod source. Both lights should be blinking and then you can adjust modulation amount.

      Yeah haha I stumbled onto it on the Deluge first, that's actually what made me think to go back and try it on the Microfreak!

    I don't think there's any synth that offers the value of the MicroFreak. It has so many features for such a great price.

    Why do I keep watching your videos about gear I do not own?
    Well, it turns out that what you can do on for example the MicroFreak is also very easy to replicate in my software synths, so your modulation examples are nice inspirations for my next sound designs.

    I almost bought one of these recently and I will eventually, I’ve got three synth’s I know relatively little about so I came across a really great deal on a Korg kaos pad KP2 used, obviously, and with the Behringer announcement of the under $100 synths, there’s 4 of them coming out. Those will be first, I am interested in your opinion on that if you have one!

    • @happyjessus
      @happyjessus 2 роки тому +3

      My guess is you ll have to wait a lot for the berhinger synths.. this announcement was way too premature unfortunately

      I'm actually super interested in the new Behringer synths, but I think we'll be waiting quite a while for them :( Thanks for watching!

    the Key/ARP mod doesn’t work the way it supposed to. I’m using the numbers on the speech osc, because they are great indicator of where is the modulation. Key/ARP on 100% modulating Shape at 0 position, the highest key on the highest octave says “4”. If it was modulating 100% of the Shape it should say “10”
    This modulation is awesome for making sequences of different words with the speech osc, but it’s not modulating 100% of the value unfortunately.

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 роки тому

      Interesting, any idea why that's happening?

    • @romi9485
      @romi9485 Рік тому

      Yes, when you set the modulation on 100% it's never actually 100%, anywhere on the matrix, which is kind of a bummer, i hope they change it in future updates

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 роки тому +1

      I know it works with the arp, I'd imagine it works with the sequencer too :)

    Does this do regular piano sounds or only synth sounds

    • @FreeBeat
      @FreeBeat  2 роки тому

      The Microfreak is just a synthesizer :) You can probably get some pretty solid electric piano sounds, but no sampled piano or anything like that. Thanks for watching!

    • @romi9485
      @romi9485 Рік тому

      If you use the stringpluck engine with bow and pluck to 0 and decay to 90, and set the envelope to 100ms attack and 100ms decay you get a nice piano sound
      You can also dive into the mod matrix to set up the velocity of the keys and get a nicer feel

    I notice you didn't try modulating pitch with the Key/Arp row. When you do that, you can microtune to less or more than 12 notes per octave!

    Really tried to like the MF (Vocoder Ed.) but returned it after a month - it just does try to do many things at a mediocre, toyish satisfaction level, low-vol output and plasticky look & feel.
