Billy could stay as the HC if he does what Saban did. Hire a great offensive and defensive coach, let them take over on the field and every now and then wander around practices giving a thumbs up ... or down. Basically, have Billy sit in the office signing checks and let his specialist take care of the team on the field. Also, as people got used to what Bama did on the field, Saban would replace those coordinators creating fresh schemes. Billy wants to be a CEO and an on the field coach at the same time. It doesn't work that way.
College football is now professional football run poorly. Billy should be the GM and hire coaches as you said. Billy may be great at recruiting, but he is not a good offensive coach or play caller. The fact that we had one player drafted last year in the NFL shows that he might not be that great an evaluator of players either.
I think Gruden needs to be a serious contender for this job. Few have the passion and fire like Gruden. Jake is spot on we need a coach who has that arrogance about him.
I think you are correct about staff size. The managerial skills needed are much different as the staff size grows. Plus, he tends to focus on the wrong metrics…like when to leave to go the Utah (elevation) vs. preparing for the actual game.
I agree completely about the group of 5 thing. Almost all coaches work their way up from smaller jobs. I never understood the "Sunbelt Billy" insult because it almost always came from someone who is a fan of a team that has a coach that came from a snaller conference. It just never made sense to me.
